Resolutions and One Words for 2018

with guest Sherrinda Ketchersid.

Christmas has passed and I’m breathing a sigh of contented relief. The parties are over, the presents are unwrapped, and it is quiet in my house. I have an empty nest, so the times when everyone is under our roof, laughing and playing together, well, it is the most wonderful time of the year. While I love the loud roar of family about me, I must confess I enjoy the silence that comes when they leave. This is the time I clean up, organize, and begin to dream of the year to come.

Do you make New Year’s Resolutions? I used to but never could keep them. I don’t know if they were too drastic or if I chose the wrong thing to focus on, but I never could make those resolutions a habit. Then I heard about the My One Word revolution. What you do is choose a word that you want to focus on for the year. Just one word. It is a word that will shape your life and everything you do for the coming year.

This choosing of My One Word has changed my life. I no longer fail at keeping resolutions. There is no more guilt – no more failure. Now I make decisions based on My One Word. I chose my dreams, goals, and activities based on My One Word. Every little step I take falls under my word. It was about progress, not perfection.

Let me share some of my past words and how they have shaped me.

2014: ANTICIPATE–After a financially difficult year, I wanted… no, needed… hope. I wanted to anticipate a year of blessing from God. I don’t mean I expected riches and comfort, but God did bless in that area. I got a new job with a $6,000 increase a year, with a smaller commute. Our cars did not break down that year. It was the year we were able to get back on our feet and help others.

2015: BRAVE–I’ve never been a brave person. I’m one of those people who cares too much about what others think. I don’t want to buck the system or rock the boat. But y’all, that is no fun! So this was the year I opened an Etsy shop, I spoke at a teacher meeting about my Bible Journaling, and I did some things I’ve always wanted to do, but was too afraid to try. This was by far my favorite year.

2016: SURRENDER–Yep. I dislike this word and I didn’t want it to be my word, but God kept putting it before me, so I… surrendered. I didn’t know why this had to be my word, but by the end of the year, it made complete sense. This was the year where difficult family situations arose and I had to put aside my Etsy shop and time for me in order to focus on others. It was a time I had to give up control and leave things in God’s hands. It was a perfect word for that year and I gained peace in the beauty of surrender.

2017: THRIVE–After surrendering so much the year before, I wanted to thrive! This was the year God allowed me to write again. God led me to set aside writing five years earlier due to it becoming an idol in my life. In December 2016 I felt the nudge to write once more, so I prayed about it and God answered my prayer with an email from an incredible published author who wanted to mentor me in 2017. Don’t you love it when God answers prayers so beautifully? And boy, did I thrive! Here is what I have learned this year:

  • I learned how to edit a manuscript.
  • Out of the 6 writing contests I entered this year, I finaled in 4 of them.
  • I started a newsletter – even though I’m not published or have much to say yet!
  • I have a wonderful writing community to encourage and motivate me on the journey.
  • I’ve stepped up and organized our church’s ladies Bible studies this year.
  • To get healthy, I began a low carb eating plan and have lost 46 pounds so far.
  • After prayer and planning, I took a leap of faith and quit my good paying job to pursue my writing and calligraphy.

So are you curious what my One Word is for 2018? It is CULTIVATE.

I’ve really been taking stock of different areas in my life and feel like I need to tend those areas better. Whether it be my spiritual walk, my relationship, my writing, lettering or homemaking, I want to till up the hard soil and make it a place where I can grow in each of those categories. I don’t want to get stagnate and lifeless. I want to flourish.

Cultivating takes work and discipline, yet the fruit of that labor will be worth the effort! Just think of the possible fruit that could come from cultivating: hearing God better, deeper marriage, stronger friendships, stronger writing (get an agent or book contract!), extra income, and a lovely, organized home. That sounds like a great year to me!

As a writer, I intend to cultivate my writing this year by incorporating the following:

  • Critique group – I have joined a group where I will be sharing my work. Yes, this is scary, but the rewards will be tremendous.
  • Read at least 1 book on the craft of writing per month.
  • Keep following Seekerville and learning from the masters. (This is a given, but I need to join in on the conversation more and ask questions!)
  • Keep writing daily.
  • After I finish my second manuscript, try a different, more marketable genre. (Medieval is currently not the right era for the Christian market.)
  • Blog twice a week. This was difficult while working full time.
  • Newsletter once a month.
  • Read one fiction book a week, especially in a different genre.

I pray this is not too ambitious, but since I will have more time this year, I want to utilize every minute. I want progress, not perfection. I want to grow and tend to the things that matter most. It doesn’t have to look perfect. In fact, messy forward motion is still progress. Get your hands dirty and make what matters a reality in your life. It will be worth it.

Do you have a My One Word for the New Year, or do you make New Year’s resolutions? What are you looking forward to most in the year to come? In what area do you want to make progress in during 2018?

    4. I've been thinking about your word, BEST, today and was struck by how you are already preparing for your new year. You've been culling through and choosing what is best and letting go of things that, while good or even great, are not BEST for you in the coming year. I love that. I can't wait to see what God is going to do with your BEST!!!!

  2. I love this Sherrinda!

Last year's one word for me was ABIDE. This year, I'm doing FIX--as in "let us FIX our eyes on Jesus" from Hebrews 12:2. (Not as in I have to fix things...haha). I hope to really rethink my priorities and affections this year in light of Jesus as my Rock.

And as far as writing resolutions go, I want to write "the end" twice this year. That feels ambitious for me in this stage of life, but that's it. Two completed projects in 2018. Here we go!

    1. Here we go, indeed! I love the word ABIDE. It has such a feeling of peace, tranquility and love. I must confess I raised my eyebrows at the word FIX until you attached the verse to it! lol Fix is a great word for the year, because when we focus on Him, everything else falls into place. I love it!

Two books in a year is a great goal...one that I have. Yes, it may be a challenge with little ones underfoot, but I bet the word FIX will give you special abilities that you can't even imagine yet. ;)

  3. I've only participated in the One word two years ago. I had never heard of it until then when I began seeing people I knew on Facebook and blogs posting their one word for the year. I really didn't think much about it until around the last off that year a word kept popping up in my mind. I prayed about it and the feeling grew stronger & I began to hear the Lord speak to me about it. So I took the leap and made my word for 2016 "Faith". Now you know how sometimes you pray for something but are cautious because you just KNOW God will give you exactly what you asked for? Yeah, that year I had a lot of situations where I needed to rely on faith to get me through! The positive out of that was my faith really did grow :-) It was only through the Lord's help that it did.

I've been asking God if He has one word for me in 2018, so far I haven't felt anything tug at my heart. If He doesn't, then I'm not too worried about it :-) I'll just keep on keeping on in the way He has me to go, leaning on Him every step of the way!

    1. P.S. I've never done New Year's Resolutions, they are too hard to keep all year :-)

The area I want to make progress in this year, is to be more gracious. That could apply to a lot of things in life, so I'll be looking for opportunities to show God's grace and extend grace to people. Not that I don't now, but to really thrive in it, if that makes sense :-)

    2. Oh my goodness, Trixi! I know exactly what you mean! I never ask for more patience!!!! lol I've learned the hard way, for sure. Maybe if you aren't hearing a word from God, you could borrow Meg's word from last year...ABIDE. That word brings such a feeling of peace and love. Maybe after a trying year you just need to rest in His loving arms and be at peace. I'll be praying for you.

    3. Oh wait...I didn't read your P.S. first...maybe your word is GRACE. Letting His grace show through you in every area of your life. Grace toward others and grace toward yourself. I know for me, I tend to neglect myself in so many areas. If I don't take care of me, then I don't have anything to offer anyone else.

Oh my goodness, I sound like I am on a therapist couch. lol I wonder what else will come out of my mouth today. ;)

  4. 2017 was a year of ups and downs and learning how unpredictable grief can be. Now as I face the new year I look forward to continuing to see how the Lord is going to continue to hold me up and be faithful through the good times and the bad. Last year's verse that got me through so much was from Deuteronomy "Underneath are the everlasting arms." It is the Lord who is the Faithful One.

I usually don't make resolutions and have never tried the one word, but I set a goal of depending on the Lord and desiring a closer walk in the New Year.

If its one thing I learned this last year, I never know what each day will bring Only the Lord knows, but He will go with me through each day and see that I make it through even when the going gets tough. It has almost been a year since I suddenly lost my mother. I miss her every day and yet I wouldn't want her to leave Heaven's glory.

    2. Wilani, I know of the grief you are speaking about as I lost my Mom on February 1st of this year. The Lord has been there through it all and I agree, while I would love to be able to see her again and hug on her, I would not want her to leave Heaven's Glory. May you be blessed in the coming year.

    4. Oh Wilani, I am so sorry for your loss. I'm so thankful the Lord was your Faithful One. He is such a big God who loves you and will see you through every situation, no matter how hard. I pray that this new year will lift you up and you will be able to soar with hope.

As for resolutions, yeah, I don't make them anymore. Once February hit, I was always depressed that I had failed on those resolutions. Nobody needs that guilt!

  5. This year was "Infinitely More" but I feel like God is moving that into more of a "life phrase" than a 2017 only one.

2018 is likely going to be "Consistency" because I know I need to be much more consistent in many areas of my life, including my writing. :)

  8. Sherrinda, what a spot-on post that touches on so many aspects of success at multiple levels... and I don't mean writing success or financial success... but that internal success of taking control of our own actions and responsibility for the consequences of those actions.

This is a post we can all learn from. It's so easy for folks to make excuses and/or blame others or circumstances, when God has given us such glorious power in our own hands... to stand still. To move forward. To sit quietly in prayer. To shout his name from mountaintops or street corners...

Your words show that beautiful world of personal choice and how it's affected you.

    BRAVA!!!!!!

    1. Ruth, you are too kind. I have to say, I wish I had learned these things decades ago, but my journey is mine and I am learning to accept my path as one that He can redeem...regardless of my choices. Of course, the journey is never ending, is it? We grow and mature at different speeds and each journey is made beautiful by the Creator. I love how you worded it...the beautiful world of personal choice. There is beauty in the journey, regardless of how "good" are choices are.

  15. Hi Sherrinda,
I've been focusing on a one word yearly goal for a long time, before I even heard of the book or the idea. It's just something that suits me, to try to improve one thing in my life at a time, while building on the word goals of the previous years. My word for last year was KIND, based on Ephesians 4:32, "Be kind and compassionate to one another, forgiving each other, just as in Christ God forgave you".
Well I thought I knew what that would mean, random acts of kindness and such, and it did, but learning to be kind went a whole lot deeper than I had any idea it could. It has ended up being similar to that prayer for patience that we all know will provide an opportunity to exercise patience. I have had to be kind in some very "unkind" situations, I have not mastered it by any means, but have made progress. I feel like I'm supposed to go around another year with being kind even though I'd like a fresh new word for a fresh new year. I even came across a Kindness devotional that leaped out at me for the coming year.
I love the words already listed,
BEST-takes a lot of faith to believe for the best
FIX-always the right choice in any situation
    ACCEPT-a challenging word for sure
LED-yes! Jesus, led me every single day

No matter what our "word" may be, I'm praying God will grow us all into the people He has created us to be!

    1. Wow Tracey! I love that you have been finding a word long before it was a "thing"! How cool is that? And who would have thought that the word KIND would be like praying for patience? Oh my! I must confess that I wondered if I should have kept the word SURRENDER another year. Did I really surrender enough? Did I learn what I needed to? But after much prayer, the Lord gave me the word THRIVE. And I was so relieved!!!!! lol No seriously...I was so relieved!

Kuddos to YOU for taking the word KIND again and being obedient to His leading. That takes a surrendered heart and is so beautiful to behold.

YES to all the words listed so far! I want to take them all! ;)

  16. Hi Sherrinda, nice to see you in a different venue, I'm an occasional visitor to the Alley. I don't have a word yet. I'm thinking.
I don't do resolutions, I do goals instead.
My short-term goal is to finish editing several books in January, February and March. My plan is to work on fiction in the morning and nonfiction (my daily bread, ha ha) in the afternoon. It's a model I heard about in an article by Pamela Redmond Satran a couple of years ago, where she said she spent the mornings on her fiction because that's when she's fresher, and the afternoon on non-fiction because that, at the time, paid the bills. For that tip, I forgive her for "Younger." My plan is to spend Mondays at Bible study, doing errands and spending time with my husband; Tuesday through Th8ursday, fiction in the morning, nonfiction in the afternoon; and Fridays, reviewing books, blog posts, the Web site (which is a MESS), Facebook author page, and contests. It's a rigorous program, but I am an empty nester and think I can work it. Too cold in New Hampshire to do anything else.
Victories for 2017: I get a new crit partner who thinks I'm brilliant; made contact with another inspirational writer in my area; finished a book and the draft of a sequel in a new series; saw said series final in two contests RIGHT OUT OF THE GATE; and made some amazing friends online. Drew closer to God as I trust Him in this journey of mine. Feel more than ever that it is in His hands. Was inspired by Sandy's post earlier this week and am still mulling it. What courage it takes to quit when you're ahead, especially when you've gotten ahead in something like this.
    Oh, the joy.

    1. Wow, Kathy, wow! I love your schedule and want to copy it. I tend to like structure, so I gravitate toward EVERYONE's schedule. But...for me, this year is about cultivating. I want to learn how to tend to things that matter and find what works for me. I always try everyone else's ways of doing things and don't ever find my own. This is the year! BUT, having said that, I want to write in the mornings and tend to things like my flower gardens, my lettering, time with friends, etc in the afternoons. That seems balanced for ME.

What great victories you have had in 2017! Isn't it fun to look back over the year and see how the Lord worked and blessed? May He do mighty things in your life this coming year!

  22. SHERRINDA!!! I am SO glad you are back at it, my friend (WRITING!!), and WOW, what a journey!!

You said, "God led me to set aside writing five years earlier due to it becoming an idol in my life."

Uh, yeah. That's exactly what I encountered, too, which is why I took my sabbatical three years ago to focus more on God, family, and writing for the sheer joy of writing. I told my editor I wasn't planning on pitching any new books or series for a while and started pressing into God like never before, and I can honestly say, not only was it the best thing I ever did, but it saved my life! But then that's what HE does best, isn't it? SAVES!! :)

I LOVE this post, my friend, expounding on each year's words and how God brought fruition to them -- WONDERFUL!!

I love the whole "one word" concept, but I have to laugh because every year when I pray about which word to choose, all I ever hear is: LOVE AFFAIR! Now, I'm not sure one can pick the same word year after year, but I do know that it is the cry of my heart to have a love affair with Jesus -- to dive deeper and, yes, to cultivate it till it is the most important thing in my life. So maybe it's okay for me to stick with that one ...

I wish you and all of Seekerville a happy, healthy, and holy 2018!!

    Julie

  23. Great post, Sherrinda!

I love all these word suggestions, and like a few others, I still need to find mine for 2018.

I've been focusing on the one word for a few years now, ever since I first heard about it here on Seekerville. (The best ideas always come from here, don't they?). It always amazes me how God uses that word (that He planted) throughout the year.

In 2013, my word was "dedication." God taught me that rather than being dedicated in my work, I needed to be dedicated to Him.

In 2014, my word was "joy," and God taught me that He is my joy, even in the most heartbreaking of circumstances. That year my mother passed away after a ten year decline due to Alzheimer's.

In 2015, my word was "abide." God taught me that nothing else is as important as abiding in Him.

In 2016, my word was "be still." This time I caught on early - I learned to be still and watch Him work.

In 2017, my word was "gratitude." Thankful praises all year long. And God taught me to be grateful for the unexpected and unlooked-for as well as the anticipated.

So what will my word by in 2018? I'm not sure yet, but I love Meg's word: "fix." I might have to steal it. (I think she'll let me!)

  24. Thank you for this encouraging post, Sherrinda! I had been thinking that "Kindness" would be my one word but when I read your "Thrive" I got all excited inside and knew that would be my word. Not that I can't work on growing kindness too, but "thrive" is just what I need. Thank you!

Did you decorate that journal? It's beautiful! And I love the quote.

Yes, I do goals ... I used to do a very complicated multi day end of year evaluation and New Year planning but my husband's on leave and I've decided to leave that for January (and I've simplified it over the last few years so other than a lot of prayer time it shouldn't take too long).

May God bless your cultivation in 2018, and all of Seekerville as we strive to honor Him in all we do!

You will thrive in relationships. You will thrive in HIM! Expect much growth! I'm so excited for you. (((hugs)))

I'm excited about the new year because I am working through Powersheets for the year (created by Lara Casey). It is a workbook to help you focus on what matters and make progress (not perfection) happen in areas you want to grow in. I'm spending time today to write down action steps for the areas I want to CULTIVATE. ;)

Blessings to you as you THRIVE in all you do!

  26. Good morning Sherrinda! So glad to see you as our host.

This is probably against the rules, but I'm still using the same word as last year. DETERMINED. I have a journal where I jot down all my word counts, and every day I write my one word beside the date as a reminder. I can think of others words, but this one still resonates w/me.

Ok. I'll admit it. I REALLY don't like change. Can you tell?

  28. Sherrinda, from the first time I heard the concept of One Word, I love it.

But, alas, much like my failed resolutions in the past, I'm not good at focusing on it throughout the year.

Your mentioned calligraphy... maybe a plaque or framed art of my one word would help me focus better.

Years ago, long before I'd heard of One Word, our family, along with our small and closeknit church family was going through a terrible time. My nephew had a drug/alcohol addition and we were fighting to pull him out of that lifestyle.

One night his dad preached on Victory, and tacked two pieces of construction paper in front of the church with the word written on them. My father-in-law (Corey is his grandson) wrote the date on the signs. Those construction paper Victory signs stayed on the walls for two years or more.

Then we remodeled the church. My mother-in-law ordered two beautiful framed word displays (the letters are made out of b/w photos of objects that look like words... Y is the a tree that branches into a "Y") with the word Victory to hang in the same spot that the simple construction paper signs hung.

The construction paper signs are taped to the back of the new signs if I'm not mistaken. My father-in-law couldn't bear to have them thrown away.

And my nephew? After several visits to drug rehab, he's been clean and sober for over 2 years. He's married to a beautiful godly woman, and they have a singing ministry. He's a counselor and men's choir leader at the drug rehab facility that helped turn his life around... to Victory in Jesus.

Now, that's One Word that's had an impact in our lives. :)

Also, a couple of weeks ago a friend gave me a devotional book by Joyce Meyer, Wake Up to the WORD. Each day's devotion focuses on a single word--the definition, a short meditation, and an applicable verse from scripture. It's been amazing how the word of the day always seems to hit home in a special way.

And today's word is ENCOURAGE. Seems just right for any day of the year in Seekerville!

  32. Hi Sherrinda and welcome to Seekerville. What an inspiring post and I love how you shared all those words for each year. How wonderful. I guess I'll have to think about that. I know that the word that keeps popping up at me lately is LISTEN. So maybe that will be my word. Of course that follows up with obey. LOL Something I'm not always good at.

Thanks again for sharing and have a blessed year. Sounds like you are heading in the right direction.

    1. Sandra, I'm trying to be more attentive to what the Lord keeps popping up in my life. If Listen is what you keep hearing, then do just that! Of course, obey is one of those hard things, but sometimes I think the Lord just wants us to sit with Him and just be. Just hear His breath and let the Spirit minister. I have a hard time doing that, but it is definitely one of things I'm going to cultivate this year!

Reap: to cut or gather a harvest. to receive from one's own choices or actions.

I love the thought of gathering in...taking in what is good...what is best...what is fruitful, and leaving behind the stalks, the chaff, the unnecessary. It's like culling out while harvesting the bounty. Gives me chills!!! GREAT word!

I hear you when you say you feel like it is too much like tempting fate. The year I chose anticipation as my word (after a horrible, devastating year), I was afraid I would disappointed. I was afraid if good things didn't happen, then I would be disappointed and mad at God. I kept it as my word, and trusted that even if bad things happened, I would find the good...the joy. And He proved faithful. He always does. I say keep JOY before you in 2018 and He will see you through whatever falls your way and give you joy in the process. Praying for you, sweet Cate!

  38. Wonderful post, Sherrinda! I only heard of the One Word concept a couple of years ago. I picked a word for 2016, but within a couple of months, I forgot what it was. LOL. In 2017 I couldn't settle on one word, so I picked two. Inspire and Believe. I also ordered bracelets with my words so I wouldn't forget them. :)

My word for 2018 is Trust. I've already ordered the bracelet, too. For about a week, I kept flip-flopping between Faith and Hope for my 2018 word, but then the word Trust kept coming to me and I knew that was my word. I try to control things and worry too much about things that I can't control. I need to remember to Trust the Lord that all things will turn out how they should.

  39. Hi Sherrinda:

I am a big fan of the One Word approach. In fact, I have found that each One Word can be enhanced by creating its corresponding Moral Premise.

    For example: Brave

If I am brave in the coming year and think more of what is best for my growth and less about what others will think, then I will have a more rewarding and blessed year

    But

If I am not brave and continue to think more of what others think than what is best for my growth, then I will repeat the lack of success I've experienced in past years.

I'm not saying that one needs to create a Moral Premise for their chosen One Word, I'm just saying that the fact that such an expansion is possible is a strong testiment to One Word's inherent power.

Also projecting Moral Premises at the start may help in selecting the best One Word for the coming year. Something I still need to do!

May you have a blessed new year and may all your One Words be as rewarding as they have in the past.

    Vince

  47. Sherrinda, I've thoroughly enjoyed and been blessed by your Bible journaling all year! And 2017 was the first year I'd heard about choosing a word for the year instead of doing New Years Resolutions so my word was "Focus". It served me well because my year devolved in to a mess where I really needed to FOCUS! This year's word is "Intentional" and I know that's stretching "Intention" a bit, but I want to be "doing with intention" everything I do in 2018, whether it's my marriage, my family writing, exercising, , hobbies - to me it's an extension of being focused. Maybe your word CULTIVATE is better, lol! I haven't chosen my guiding Bible verse yet, I still haven't felt settled on it. Thank you for a wonderful end of year post. I must pray about my new One Word. The Lord gave me "courage" the year my son was deployed for the first time to Iraq. Since then, I've had others, but courage continues to be meaningful to me year after year.

I think I misunderstood the first time I heard about the New Year, One Word thing from Tina. I thought it was a spiritual thing that you asked God for. So I set about praying for God to give me my one word that year, and He did! I felt like He gave me a word straight from him while I was praying. And during the year I saw exactly how that word applied to my life and what I was learning on my journey that year. And every year since--about five or so years?--I have prayed for at least a week before New Year's for God to give me his one word, and every year it's been so spot on, so perfect and wonderful and memorable. But I don't usually understand until some point later in the year, when I suddenly go, "OHHHHH!"
Anyway, I'm praying for my one word now, and I'm excited to see what it is. :-)
It's fun to see you here in Seekerville, Sherrinda! I pray you have a wonderfully blessed year.
P.S. Do pray about whether you should pursue Medievals or try something new. You just never know. Tamara Leigh and I have had great success with them. ;-)

  52. Melanie!!!! My fellow medieval-loving-friend! I love that God has given you words that have had application to life and your journey. That was the way my word SURRENDER was...only after the summer did I realize why it was my word and how applicable it was to my journey. So sweet of God to give me what I needed and to prepare me the way He did. I pray the Lord gives you a perfect word for an exciting new year.
P.S. I will definitely pray about medievals. I know you and Tamara are brilliant and such GREAT writers and are able to sell the hard era of Middle Ages...it gives me hope that one day I might follow suit. Aye, I have hope! ;)

  53. I do New Year's resolutions. I never end up keeping them, but that never stopped me from doing them. I figure someday- someday- I might actually accomplish it, and THAT WILL BE THE DAY. But if I never try, it will never happen.

2017 my one word was HOPE this year I'm thinking ACCOMPLISHMENT

    1. Yay for YOU in doing resolutions and going for them. I think you have to at least have a target to aim for, because if you don't, you won't EVER hit the bullseye!

I absolutely love the word accomplishment! It is the successful achievement of a task. It can also be the result of study, practice and hard work. So many ways you could go with it. I hope it serves you well in the new year!!!

    1. Oh Jackie, you should! Of course, it is because I have found such satisfaction in it that I preach about it, but I do think it is a great way of adding focus to a year. It leads you to make decisions based on what really matters to achieve your Word. I just love it!
I love journals too and am happy to add you to giveaway pool. (((hugs)))

  56. Hi Sherrinda!
I love having one word to kind of keep my focus during the year. I have had several over the years, and this past year my word was Reclaim. It is funny because at first I thought it was about reclaiming my call to write and writing in general. BUT it turned out to be a lot more. It would take too long to put it all down here, but after two years of praying to the Lord for direction...my husband and I felt called to another state. This came with a job offer for me in another Christian radio station and a whirlwind of moving almost across the country without selling our home (just putting it up for sale and praying), living in a friend's basement, a KOA campground, a shabby smelly cabin...and more. We had to continually reclaim God's promises and so far...sooooo good! BUT OY...what a ride!
I have been praying about my word for this year, and I may be wrong, but I truly feel that God has told me that this year my word is "write." I will know for sure by the Seekerville New Year's party. :)

This year, one of my goals is to get on and stay on the Whole30 for at least two round. Write write write. And also join ACFW because I really want to dig deep and learn and I have a feeling God is nudging me. We'll see. :)
    Thanks for the great post.
Please including me in the drawing. :)

    1. Kelly!!! Wow, I'm so impressed by your claiming and reclaiming God's promises through all your transition this year. What a beautiful journey of faith you've had! Who knows how God will use those experiences in the new stories you will write! I encourage you to join ACFW and get involved in all it has to offer. Of course, this blog is a GREAT way to learn and ask questions. The backlog of posts is FULL of information and everyone here is sooooo encouraging and helpful.

I keep hearing about the Whole30 plan and should investigate. I've been doing Keto and it is good to lose weight, but I miss bread. :( I just need something to keep diabetes away...it runs in the family and I refuse to get it! lol

I will be praying for you and your One Word. Maybe I will "see you" at the Seekerville New Year's party and you can confirm your word! Can't wait!

    2. Kelly, that's all so exciting!! I think maybe my word for you this past year would be BRAVE! :)

    3. Missy thank you. BRAVE kind of got us there. :)
Sherrinda, I hear Keto is great, but yeah, I would miss bread too. I will miss bread on Whole30 but at least it is kind enough to allow potatoes!

Now...to actually DO it! ;)

    2. I can't wait to hear your answer too!!

This might be my secondary word, lol as I have a ton of travel planned for 2018.

    4. Hi Sherrinda, Tina, Missy:

My One Word 'peripatetic' is very literal. I have trouble walking more than a few hundred feet since my fall and I don't move around enough -- even with a walker. I am going back for more tests this year (approval letter came yesterday) and hope things will get better and I'll be able to get some more teaching engagements. This is highly optimistic but after ten years here I've learned to seek the best!

  61. Dear Sherrinda, Thank you so much for that beautiful post. I try not to think of resolutions as something that can only start on Jan. 1. The word resolution sort of has that connotation, but I believe in the Nike ad phrase, "Just do it." If there's something that needs to be done, get it done. If you know there's something that needs to be changed, try to start now instead of waiting for Jan. 1. Does that mean I'm great at my own advice? Of course not, but I hope I'm more conscious of doing something rather than dreaming about it.

I did have a word in 2017-Believe. I haven't chosen one for 2018. I'm torn about whether to do so or not.

Thanks for the encouragement and the inspiration.

  62. Sherrinda, I think you just changed my life! I love the concept of One Word. Thank you for sharing your past words and reviews of each year. I am going to think on it a bit more, but right now the word DISCIPLINE comes to mind—discipline in writing, eating better, attempting to exercise, sleeping, etc. This past year was a year of changes and new routines that I haven’t quite got control of yet. Discipline will help. Thank you...and blessings to you and everyone as we pursue our one word.

  63. Hi Sherrinda!

I started choosing a yearly word just a few years ago and I am amazed at how just doing that small thing has made a difference for me. When I look back at my words from the previous years, I can see how they actually came to fruition each year.

I am thinking about my word for 2018 even as I write this. :)

  65. I first heard about My One Word a few years ago here on Seekerville. 2018 will be my third year of doing it. I still make a few resolutions (likely as a tradition), but not as many as I used to do. I also choose a word and a Bible verse to go along with it. 2016 - I had trust. 2017 - I had positivity. 2018 - I chose Enough.

Please enter me in the drawing. Thanks for being here, and Happy New year!

  70. Hi Sherrinda,
What a great post! My word for 2018 is Grateful. My husband and I have had a very difficult year, several years actually, and quite honestly, I have found myself being angry over what we've gone and continue to go through. When I thought about the word I wanted "Grateful" immediately dropped into my mind and spirit. I realized that I can't be angry and grateful at the same time. And we have much for which to be grateful! So my word is GRATEFUL and my plan is to list a minimum of 3 things each day in a Grateful Journal.
Please enter me in the drawing.
Blessings to all for a happy and prosperous New Year!

    1. Edwina, I'm so sorry you've had a rough few years. I know the feeling well and it is natural to feel anger about having to go through those hard time. King David wailed at God at times and that gives me comfort. He just never lost sight of who God is and had plenty of psalms praising in spite of the wailing ones. ;) I love your word for the year and will pray that you will have so many things you are grateful for each day, you will need a new journal before the end of the year! (((hugs)))

  71. Like you, after many failed attempts to make New Year's Resolutions, I've opted for one word. My word for this year is "Consistency." This goes for every area of my life, my writing, family, friends, church, and most of all, my devotion to Christ. I want to be a better, more well-rounded person this year than I've been in the past several years. So, consistency in my overall living is my word for 2018.
