Market and Industry News

Galley Cat:
Book Stock Watch: Noble Rumors

Rumors that Barnes & Noble will sell a digital reader alongside Amazon Kindle and Sony Reader dominated bookselling headlines this week. Since the bookseller purchased e-book retailer Fictionwise, this hypothetical e-reader could sell plenty of e-books.

USA Today:

What's New On The List and In Publishing

Vampires rule:Twilight author Stephenie Meyer continues to dominate USA TODAY's Best-Selling Books list. Sales of her novels accounted for about 16% of all book sales tracked by the list in the first quarter of 2009. That's about one in seven books. Read the top 20 sellers here.

New York Times:
Posthumous Crichton Novels on the Way

Michael Crichton, the best-selling author of technological thrillers like “The Andromeda Strain” and “Jurassic Park” who died of cancer in November, left behind at least one finished novel and about one-third of a second. Both will be released over the next year and a half, his publisher said.

C.S. Lewis Gets A New Look From HarperOne.

In addition to a new look for the paperback and hardcover books, HarperOne has created a website for C.S. Lewis fans.

"In addition to descriptions of and excerpts from the books, the site features a blog with original posts by Lewis scholars and other authors. These titles will soon be available as e-books, but for now, HarperOne is courting an audience interested in volumes that are, according to Boutote, “very tactile, nice to hold, very classy to give as a gift.”

Dear Abby:

Newly Published Author Shies Away From Glare Of Limelight

DEAR ABBY: I have recently enjoyed the success of having my first book published. However, this achievement has begun to change my life in ways I hadn't expected. I am a somewhat shy and reflective person...

Cool Thing of the Week

From Skinnyskinny. "A gift box that is completely tree-less, sustainable and looks like a book. It is made from wild-grass and is made with Fair Labor practices. Each book-box is handmade and will make just about everything look great. The box comes in a very nice yellow-green color. We intentionally left these boxes free of any logos or branding, so it is easy to use this box as a gift box or as a hiding place for little trinkets." ($12.00)

  2. Wooohooo! I get my very own portable therapist to carry around with me wherever I go! Now was this a random drawing or did I just look like the needy-est one? lol!!! I could see you thinking I was the one in need, but Eileen? She is one of the sweetest, strongest ladies I "cyber-know".

Thanks so much! I enjoyed hanging out with you all this week. (I usually do, but don't always comment... which is a shame, because I had waayyy more fun jumping in with yall.) You ladies rock!

  3. I actually used the word random Sherrinda, but took it out as it appeared I was saying the winners were like random people.

Looking forward to Jeannie's therapy post too!

Thanks for randomly picking me, Tina! And, Sherrinda, we'll have to swap notes and see how our characters fare with our newfound knowledge!
