Byrd is with a "Y" not an "I". Whereas if she were a robin or a goldfinch, we'd use an "I".
But she's not. I'm just sayin'... ;) Here's her lovely post with her correctly spelled name. Same great picture. ;)
Okay. I'll admit it. I don't much like change. To be more accurate, I loathe change. When I heard snippets that ebooks were the wave of the future, I fought it with everything in me. I've been a book collector for over 15 years and have well over 1,000 books in my home. For some reason, the very existence of ebooks threatened my beloved print books. I vowed that I would never buy an ebook, that enemy that might eventually extinguish the print books that I so love to hold in my hands.
When a book came out that was available only in eformat, I wanted it so badly that I gave it a try. After I figured out how to download the first one, I was hooked and have purchased dozens of ebooks since then. I absolutely love ebooks. I'm not killing trees, using expensive ink or lugging around heavy objects. And best of all, I can read when I want on my cell phone, anywhere, any time. And, I can read in bed with hubby right beside me and don't have to worry about disturbing him with a bedside light. The font is adjustable and right now my font is larger and darker than the print in a paperback. It's backlit and easy on the eyes. I can purchase ebooks in seconds and never leave the house. I have literally thousands of titles at my fingertips. Also, ebooks are inexpensive and many of them, especially those in the public domain, are free. Since I store ebooks on my computer (or a flash drive), they're not taking up room in my home and I can read them again if I choose.
Many publishers, including mine, Desert Breeze Publishing , have started book clubs and customers can get free books after so many purchases. Want to give it a try? Desert Breeze Publishing has four free downloads including a cookbook. This freebie will allow you to make sure your software is working before you spend money on an ebook. If you can't figure it out, e-mail Desert Breeze. Their customer service is wonderful.
If you don't have a smart phone, you can download Mobipocket on your laptop or netbook and read from there. I've decided not to fight it. After all, how many people fought purchasing a microwave oven? DVD player? Cell phone? And, now an ebook? Progress will continue no matter how hard we try to fight it. I, for one, hope that ebooks are here to stay.
Thanks for allowing me to share my experience. I found it so positive that I have a new release with Desert Breeze on April 1. You can check it out at HERE or on my Blog
Today I'm giving away a free download of Queen of Hearts. To get your name in the drawing, leave a comment.
~~~~~~~~~~~
Queen of HeartsDaphne Dean is proud to be serving her country stateside during WWII as a reporter and an Office of Strategic Services operative. When the photograph she takes of the crowd at a murder scene places her on the mob's hit list, she's forced into hiding in a vacant mental asylum in the middle of nowhere with terrifying secrets of its own.
Daphne believed herself to still be in love with her ex-fiancée, Kenneth, until she spends several days locked away in the asylum with Vito, the mob boss' son. Can she put the terrifying events that occurred there behind her and allow herself to pursue a relationship with Vito? Or, will she return to Kenneth who has turned his back on his country by becoming a draft dodger and a black market racketeer? One thing's for sure, it won't matter if she can't escape the mental institution alive.
K. Dawn Byrd is an author of inspirational romance. She has two books coming out in 2010 with Desert Breeze Publishing. The first, Queen of Hearts, will release on April 1, 2010.
Intriguing photo! I love it!!!
ReplyDeleteSO:
Do I call you "K"?
Dawn?
K. Dawn?
I'm so confused and it's way too early to confuse me, please. Thank heavens I brought coffee. Fresh, lovely coffee. Really good coffee. Now if the shoemaker's elves would just come and clean my kitchen for me, I'd be in 'aaaaaahhhhhh-land'.
I'm guessing that's not going to happen, LOL!
K. Dawn, great intro into the sometimes scary world and concept of e-books. Super congrats on your releases!
I've loaded up the back table with sugar. Teeeeeeena may not cotton to it, but I can't start the day without M&M's and pastry, hence the donuts, fried cakes glazed with apple cider frosting and the French Toast bake that just needs some of that yummy New York maple syrup (our season is just about coming to a close...trees are budding....YAY spring!!!!!)
Help yourselves, darlings, and have some fun with K. Dawn and Daphne Dean. (strapped to an embalming table???? Oh, mylanta, girlfriend, I've got CHILLS thinking about it. Real chills. HOW COULD YOU DO THAT TO HER??? WHERE WAS VITO??????)
Ruthy
I love ebooks, especially for travel. I hate to lug heavy books, so keeping ebooks on my iPod Touch is so much nicer. Eventually I would like to get an ereader with a longer battery life than my iPod, but it works for now.
ReplyDeleteThanks for sharing about your novel. Sounds intriguing!!
Lisa
K. Dawn Bird -- Welcome to Seekerville, and I'm with Ruthy -- I want to know what to call you!! My money's on "Dawn" because my husband is R. Keith, and we call him Keith.
ReplyDeleteI have to admit, e-books are a scary concept to this author, but not so much after a recent encounter with them that turned out to be quite pleasant.
My first book A Passion Most Pure was recently part of a Amazon Kindle free download promotion, which could be downloaded not only on a Kindle, but on Mac, PC, i-phone and i-pod Touch as well. I was stunned at how many people participated in that, and the really weird thing was how that promotion positively affected my print #s as well. The whole thing made me sit up and take notice that e-books are here to stay and a force to be reckoned with. As a result, I have even toyed with the prospect of getting a Kindle myself, and like you originally, I thought THAT would never happen.
Thanks, K.Dawn, for taking the time to broaden our horizons on this very pertinent subject, and SUPER congrats on your two books coming out. Queen of Hearts sounds fascinating!
Hugs,
Julie
Welcome to Seekerville!!!
ReplyDeleteI love the hat! Totally love the look.
Congratulations on your sales. The cover is gorgeous.
I have an iTouch too and let me tell you it comes in handy to have books and videos and music on there when you are standing in line, or in terminal wait mode or at work and the internet goes down and you can't do ANYTHING.
And on a totally random topic I would like to point out that it is SNOWING in Denver..1-3 inches out there.
ReplyDeleteCongratulations on your book release K. Dawn! Very exciting!
ReplyDeleteI'll admit to being a technological minimalist. I have a laptop and that's about it. No cell phone, no ipod, no kindle, no game thingys! LOL. My wee little house is filled with books (who needs wallpaper or paint when you can line your walls with your favourite books?)
That being said, I can certainly see that e-books are here to stay. I'm just praying they don't replace my beloved books completely!
I'm interested in knowing about your publication process and how it compares to submitting to traditonal book publishers. I checked out Desert Breeze Publishing's website. It's about the best e-book publishing site I've seen and I love their reason for starting up.
Thanks!
Thanks for all your wonderful comments! First of all, Desert Breeze was absolutely wonderful to work with. The process was very much like the print process. I queried them and submitted a couple of chapters. They requested more and then offered a contract. The book was put through a couple of edits and read by the CEO and also at least one copy editor after I finished editing it.
ReplyDeleteThe hardest part of the e-process was getting the formatting right. There are special formats for ebooks so that appear nicely on your reader and everything must be just so.
I absolutely love ebooks and I'm not saying that because it's my publishing format. I fell in love with them before submitting to DBP. Also, I feel good about the fact that even a child could serf the DBP website and not find erotica or anything offensive.
For anyone who wants to give it a try...you can read Kindle books for free. Go to Amazon, find a book (or you can download the first couple of chapters of mine for free if you wish.) To the right, you'll see the box to click to add the Kindle app to your computer, laptop, or netbook. I downloaded the Kindle to my netbook and have some books on it right now. Dozens of Kindle books are free. It would be a good way to get your feet wet and it's totally free!
OOPS! I forgot to answer Ruth...as to my name...you can call me Dawn.
ReplyDeleteCongrats, Dawn, on your new release. I know you're excited.
ReplyDeleteI've heard such great things about e-books, and I did download some on my computer, but I can't take it with me everywhere so I'm slow getting them read. Hopefully, soon, I'll get to invest in a good e-book reader.
Would love to read your book Dawn.
Good Morning Dawn!
ReplyDeleteExcellent advice on not fighting the ebook wave. Soon enough it will be another yawn to everybody-- just like the microwave, as you said.
I've checked out Desert Breeze Publishing & I do like what I see. IMHO, I think there's more opportunity for writers who write 'outside the box,'or rather, 'off the shelf'! Those of us who don't fit into the categories the publishers use to buy the real estate in the bookstores.
Also, the younger readers -- not just teens with YA novels, but college students, 20's-30's demographic -- find Ereaders more accessible. Just look at all the mobile status updates on FaceBook & connect that with the age -- see what I mean?
I have Kindle downloaded on the computer & read some books there, but I'm looking forward to the day when I get an Iphone or Ipad-- I've read that Apple is looking to put the Kindle & others out of business with the Ereader apps.
Gracious Ruthy! How much caffeine is in that coffee? I'm never this verbose this early in the morning!
Thanks for the post Dawn! I'd like to read your release as well:
Woohoo, Dawn. So glad to see you on Seekerville.
ReplyDeleteI downloaded Julie's book APMP on my computer and I"ve downloaded some classics, like Jane Eyre, Emma, P &P, and Frankenstien - but I've not gotten much into the ebook world yet.
You've been an good influence on that score.
Btw, Seekers, Dawn is my roommate for ACFW. Wouldn't miss stopping by and saying 'hi'.
I was the same way as you - didn't want to even try ebooks - finally did - and love it!
ReplyDeletePlease enter me in your drawing!
I love paper books, too, but my bookshelves are getting pretty full! Someday, when I have an eReader, I think I'll enjoy taking lots of books with me wherever I go. I already read ebooks on the computer, but it's nothing like curling up in a chair.
Dawn, this is all SOOO new to me: I think I am over the age!! However, I would like to enter for your book....who knows, it may be the first I will try on e reading!
ReplyDeleteI did learn a lot from your post. Thanks!!!
ANNOUNCING!!!!!!!!!!!
ReplyDeleteIN THIS MONTH'S RWR, THE ROMANCE WRITER'S REPORT, FROM RWA........
FIRST SALES BY AN AUTHOR INCLUDING..............
TINA RADCLIFF AND MELANIE DICKERONS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Hi, Dawn. Love your name.
ReplyDeleteIt sounds like the morning dove cooing as the sun rises in the east.
Add Ruthy's caffeine and it's all the fun I can stand.
GAH! I mispeled Mellany's name.
ReplyDeleteDickerson.
Hello, everyone and welcome Kim or Dawn now I'm flummoxed. I've called you Kim at the DBP site. But ... It's rather comical to note I have an ebook out in June and I've been horrible about getting ebooks.
ReplyDeleteYou're right it's not going away anytime soon I did an ebook 20 years ago and they didn't stay the but ebook readers has changed that and made it easier.
Ebooks are out selling print in most cases.
Thanks for all the info Dawn and congrats Tina and Melanie
And I mispeled Don Bird's name, too?
ReplyDeleteI'm having a great day. Yeesh. Sorry.
Connealy.
ReplyDeletePathetic.
Really.
Don't you have a calf to castrate or something?
Oh mylanta, .....
Breathing deep here in the more refined reaches of New York State...
Pepper. Dawn is rooming with you? Is she SURE???? I mean really SURE????
I'm just asking out loud.
REALLY, REALLY SURE??????
And let me just say kudos to me for fixing Dawn's name. After I stole an identity to pirate my way into the moderator's page or some such thing.
Yes.
I infiltrated TINA'S power core.
All by myself.
SNAP!!!!
Hey, I saw Dickerons name and Radcliff as well in the RWR. I was suitably impressed. Mega congrats guys!!!! That's a day I've been waiting TOO LONG for for both o'youse.
Hey, we made M&M and chocolate chip cookies for everyone. So yummy.
Jump in. Try some. No one is allowed to be skinny in Nashville and show me up. Got it?
Pay no attention to the picture or the name. Dagnabbit, I'm still signed in under a cute Italian Alias.
Ah, now this is me!
ReplyDeleteYAY!!! I feel Irish again. Gone are the strange yearnings for a never-ending pasta bowl replaced by potatoes in every way, shape and form.
That was a total out-of-body experience.
TEEEEEENAAAA!
Do you know you have an ABBOTTS FROZEN CUSTARD by you???? I just saw it in our local paper!!!!
Oh my gosh, best soft ice cream ever and you have one!!! Now we can get Chick Fil A and Abbotts!!!!
YES! DENVER ROCKS!!!
Ruthy,
ReplyDeleteWhat a RELIEF!!! I don't have to worry about being skinny in Nashville? Hand over some of those cookies!
I'll add some Lindor truffles to the list of items, since one of my students left an entire package on my desk yesterday. I don't need them all - really! HAPPY to share.
Dawn is only rooming with me because I bribed her with chocolate. The real fear is that she has to FLY with me! I'm a 5 year old with ADHD + caffienated beverages when I'm on a plane. ABSOLUTELY LOVE TO FLY!!!
Pepper, I HATE flying.
ReplyDeleteI am just the littlest bit prone to air sickness, which I can handle if I'm VERY, VERY CAREFUL.
As a way to move around the country at top speed it cannot be beat. But man I hate it. Hate buying tickets online. Hate packing. Hate checking bags and tapping my 'code' into that weird computer. Hate escalators. Hate security, shoe removal, computer from computer bag removal, empty pockets, getting redressed, all with a line piling up behind me while I set off buzzers. Hate getting redressed with a line piling up behind me.
Hate waiting in uncomfortable chairs, hate stowing bags over head or under foot.
Hate trams and signs that don't make sense and hurry, hurry, hurry up and wait.
So, I'm with you babe.
I'm flying to Indianapolis, too.
ReplyDeleteMary,
ReplyDeleteIt's probably good we're flying from separate directions.
1. I'd either annoy you into wishing you could push me from the plane.
2. I'd distract so much you wouldn't rememnber your air sickness :-) I'm one of those weird people who thinks everything is pretty near AMAZING. I'm even weirder because I think turbulence is cool! I love that drop-in-your-stomach feeling.
But I'm so with you on waiting in line. Yuck. Of course, being prone to eaves dropping helps ;-) Some amazing story ideas come from overheard conversations ;-)
Yes, I'm sure I'm rooming with Pepper. We've actually met and she's a sweetie. I've never flown before and it'll be nice to fly with a pro. You hear that, Pepper? You're a pro! She may have only flown once, BUT it was to Englad. That makes her a pro in my book.
ReplyDeleteAs to the roommate issue...don't know if it's true, Pepper, but hubby says I snore. I don't believe him though...I believe he's just getting even because I taped him sawing logs on my Blackberry to prove that he does. HE HE!
Dawn, go untape your husband from the bed. That's just rude.
ReplyDeletePepper, I HATE when the plane hits turbulence. Not because I'm afraid to die. I always spend take-off in prayer, making sure my sins are freshly forgiven and my soul is right with the Lord. Yes, that's right, I'm not afraid I'm goign to die, I ASSUME Im going to die.
But what I fear is needing the barf bags. When I sit down the first thing I do is check the little storage area in front of my knees and make sure the barf bag is within easy reach.
A lesson learned in the brutal school of hard knocks, let me tell you.
Mary, How does a lady who gets woozy with a little motion on a place write such strong, in-your-face women characters? : )
ReplyDeleteHannah -- THANK YOU for downloading A Passion Most Pure, and it doesn't bother me one bit that Camy's book was your first download ... just as long as you download mine too, I'm cool!! :)
ReplyDeleteAnd, Pepper, LINDOR TRUFFLES???? Oh, we have SOOO much in common, girl!!!
Hugs,
Julie
Mary,
ReplyDeleteI make confession before I fly too - just in case. Of course, I could probably make confession as the plane it plummeting too, but I might be distracted at that point. Better to be proactive ;-)
Julie,
Which truffles do you like the best?
I'm particularly fond of the dark chocolate cream ones. Whew...better go taste one just to make sure ;-)
No problem at all, Julie!! I really can't wait....
ReplyDeletePepper, I LOVE peanut butter....guilty pleasure all the way!!
I've flown so many times I can't even count! Lol! We've done four international trips, which included flying to other places once we were there! Lol! This summer we're traveling overseas again! Can you believe it?!
THIS JUST IN, YOU ALL ARE THE FIRST PEOPLE TO KNOW (pretty much):
I'M GETTING A CAR!!!!!!!!! IT'S MY FIRST CAR!!!! I'm sooooooo psyched!!!!
: D
Now, I'm trying to come up with a name for it....hmmmm.....any suggestions!?
Talk to you later!
Hannah
: D
Hannah, congratulations on the car.
ReplyDeleteCall it Freckles.
No reason.
Sorry about your headaches. I get migraines, too. They've eased off over the years.
I can't hurt to spend a little bit of time with the Lord whenever that might be. So why not right before take off.
And landing
And turbulence.
A very spiritual experience for me.
I also have, during my pre-flight meditation, a sweet moment when I latched onto the spiritual message I was looking for, for Calico Canyon. So all that terror is worth it.
Except for the barf bag part.
Hi, Teri.
ReplyDeleteMy heroines are allllll about who I WISH I was. Not who I am.
hannah,
ReplyDeleteI'm with Mary. LOVE the name Freckles. I have a certain fondness for freckles anyway.
Peanut butter? Oh yea. Definitely a good choice - especially with chocolate :-)
Thanks for this post!!!! At first, I was a little skeptical too...but the more I learned about epublishing, the more excited I became!! My debut, A Bitch Named Karma, is being released by Lyrical Press in June and I couldn't be happier. I LOVE my ereader and it makes my time at the gym fly by. I can adjust the print so I can read while I'm on the elliptical or treadmill or any other machine. I tried reading a paper book and a magazine...no dice. Print was too tiny and I kept reading the same line over and over again!
ReplyDeleteI've heard so many devoted book lovers swear they will NEVER buy an ebook or an ebook reader. It;s so refreshing to know that so far, at least one has changed their mind! :) Thank you!
I'm sorry I'm old school I guess but there's just nothing that beats holding a real book in my hands! Maybe if they come out with an e-reader that emits a new book smell I might cave and get one! :-P
ReplyDeleteXOXO~ Renee
