Today I’m pleased to feature and honor Friends of Seekerville in my post.
I donned my mining cap (see the cool light on the front?) and went deep underground to mine gems of wisdom from our comment section. I list the original post that I mined the comment from at the end of each quote. I hope you enjoy and benefit from these gems of wisdom, insight and encouragement, mined from Seekerville’s comment section. Thanks for all that YOU do to make our community what it is. We appreciate your insight.
This is the first of what I hope to be several mining expeditions, so don't despair if you don't see your comment featured here. I have thousands more comments to shovel through and plan to do these features regularly, hence the Vol 1.

The Gem: Debby, Thank you for the encouraging and challenging post. Sometimes it's easy to get distracted when writing and forget what our purpose for writing is: to show Christ to the world and encourage others.
I have always had a heart for those who serve our country. Since moving to the DC area I started volunteering at Walter Reed. I don't know as this is classified as courage, because I spend the whole day praying before going there. It's always a challenge to walk in and meet a new group of guys. I thank God that he always revs me up to go when it would be easier to go home.

Cant say just one time God has touched my funny bone here at Seekerville but I know there have been many. There have been times when I haven't been feeling the best and the comments have given me a laugh or a lift. I think one of the funny ones recently was during seekerville birthday when Mary posted and Hannah, Renee and one other (forgive if I missed someone) were posting crazy comments to go in the draw (dont think they won that time either!) But it was fun to see there craziness whoops I mean creativeness.

Anyway, those were fun to read :). As a newbie, I didn't recognize any of them but fun nonetheless. Maybe one of these days I'll have something witty enough to make it into another volume.
I forget the actual question now [did you see that sentence up there? That took some time to craft!] but my fave comment on Seekerville so far was Julie's wonderfulness on 'posting the end of your chapter to keep them turning the page' and the kind things she said about mine at that point. I need to go find it and copy/paste it then print it off and hang it somewhere. Or something.

My daily routine starts with oatmeal and Seekerville. :-) Sometimes I don't have time to comment until later, but I'm always mulling over what's been posted. And honestly, no matter who the blogger is or what the topic is I've definitely been touched and tickled and lifted up by your willingness to share with such generosity.

Ooooo, a run on race sounds like so much fun, but the problem is that I have a three year old sitting next to me [notice that says 'three year old' and not '3yo' or DS3] and though I have already showered and dressed and put my make up on and changed a diaper, I do still need to make my lunch, dress said three year old who wants to run around nekkied [except for said diaper], and get my school stuff together, plus I'd like to edit a chapter for that FULL REQUEST I got over the weekend, and I only have about twenty five [not 25 ;)] minutes before I have to leave so maybe later?

Whew! I’m revved up this morning! Got into work to find an e-mail from my Admiral that he was coming in at 1000 to sign letters I was told I had until 1500 to produce. So after performing the flight of the bumble bee I’m checking into Seekerville.

It amazed me six months ago when I started visiting Seekerville that there were authors willing to give so much of their time and assistance to other writers. You’ve all been such a blessing and the information you provide is invaluable.
Now, before I get too emotional, and embarrass myself, I better grab another cup of coffee.

Sorry I'm late, Cheryl, but I've been working on my TBR pile , going to bed with a book and getting up late. Plays havoc with coffee duties.
The more I write, the less I read. So I've been taking time to read and not moving as fast on the writing.
I can't read as much as I used to. The eyes just won't tolerate it. Get all stingy and watery. (not stingy as in tightwad, sting-y as in painful)

I'm named after a fictional Swedish spy.
I work for the Naval Historical Foundation on the Washington Navy Yard. So, I'm sorry to kill your dream, but I'm not on a ship. I am on the Washington Navy Yard, home to NCIS, JAG, Navy INTEL and other great commands that make us a prime target for attack. The Foundation is a non-profit whose purpose is to support the Navy's official history program. We provide funding for the Navy's museums and research programs and we also supplement their oral history and speaker program.
What do I do? I'm the oral history program manager (this is what I was originally hired to do since my degree is in Naval Warfare), the events manager (we rent out the Navy Museum for private events it's my job to coordinate with the client, base command, and port ops to make sure everyone is happy), and I serve as the executive assistant for our capital campaign to expand the museum and the personal assistant to our three admirals since they don't want to pay for their own individual assistants (this part of the job can be fun as I get to interact with top corporate leaders, military leaders, and political leaders). Sorry, to kill the heroine dream. ;o) But feel free to use the name.

ReplyDeleteSorry I’m late in responding back! Thanks for your interest. I’m pretty proud of the men I work for, and I plan on using many of their stories. Many times they think I’m taking notes during a meeting, and I am, notes on them. ;o) So I’ll share a little information, but rest assured the names will be changed to protect the innocent, but I have stories in mind for each.
I tend to write romantic suspense and my heroes are always military or former military, mainly Marines. I have to admit my boss’ biggest frustration is I work for the Navy and love the Marines. :o) Our organization works closely with the Marine Corps, so when someone has to go to Quantico they send me. It’s my reward.
Surprisingly, my current wip is about an NFL player. Not sure where he came from.
And I love your stories, Cheryl, but they’d really pitch a royal if they knew I read stories about airmen. I’d have to hear lecture after lecture about the supremacy of the Naval Aviator.

ReplyDeleteWith your interest in the military I’ll give you a little of their histories. Our Chairman Emeritus is Admiral James Holloway III, former Chief of Naval Operations. He served in WWII, Korea and Vietnam. He has a jacket FULL of awards and medals. AMAZING history and he and his wife are as cute as bugs ears (but don’t tell him I said that). He started in surface navy and then went into aviation. He was the first aviator to go through nuclear training so he could command the first nuclear aircraft carrier. He just wrote a book detailing his career Aircraft Carriers at War. I’d highly recommend. He’s a Top Gun and was the tech advisor for the movie Top Gun (not his most distinguished honor, but I thought it was cool). He’s my favorite today because he gave me tickets for the Naval Academy football game this Saturday.
The second 4-Star is Admiral Bruce DeMars a submariner. He served during the Cold War and much of what he did is still classified and probably will be until after he dies. He served in the silent service tracking Ivan (Soviet Submarines). He ended his career as the head of the Navy’s Nuclear program.
The 3-Star, Vice Admiral Robert Dunn, is a former Naval Aviator and if you’ve been around aviators you’d know it the minute you met him. He’s a great guy and very nice, but he has the attitude and ego that kept him alive in Vietnam and throughout the Cold War. He also cracks me up because he hangs up on me ALL THE TIME. The conversation usually ends like this. “Okay, Admiral, Goo—“Click the line is dead. He’s not being rude it’s just from being in command, you issue the order and that’s that. I have this in a story already. It’s just too great.

ReplyDeleteI've also been blessed to assist the Marine Corps oral history program, so I've transcribed, edited and indexed my way through some great sources for stories and life.
One of my heroes is a former Marine sniper, because of interviews I listened to of snipers in Vietnam.
One last note. This last week we had a former Vietnam POW visit our base and share his experiences. He was held for 6 years. During his talk he testified to the grace and faithfulness of God, and how he and the other men led a 10 minute worship service every week and at Christmas one man with an amazing voice sang O Holy Night. The men would then exchange pretend gifts. But after they got home every man made good on the gifts they gave their friends in prison.
The greatest thing about my job is that I get to hang out with true heroes. It's an honor.
@Mary Kay--I only know of one place to get a master's in Naval Warfare and that's the American Military University. The degree combines Navy and Marines and studies not only the history but strategies, tactics, policies, etc. It's fun!
Okay, I'll end the epic saga. I get talking about the military and my tongue and fingers get away from me.
