First and Third: Voice...and a Little Bit of Baseball
By Lindi Peterson

I’m in Seekerville! Yay!!!

What a great place to be. So many friendly, talented people here. I know Helen has the coffee on, so it’s time to start, my friends.

Some facts about me.

Name: Lindi Peterson
Age: ? (Ha. Did you really think I would tell?)
Writing genre: Inspirational contemporary romance.
Debut Novel: Her Best Catch

Okay, now we have the basics covered. Needless to say I’m thrilled to be here as a guest blogger today. I know most of these ladies personally and I love them!

But even though I’m thrilled to be here I am a little nervous. I mean, this is SEEKERVILLE. So many readers and writers visit this blog regularly. So, there’s only one thing to do. Take a deep breath and dive right in.

Splash!

I’ve been doing this writing thing for a few years. A lot of years. They say perseverance pays off, and I guess it does. Maybe I’m also a slow learner in some ways. But I will say that for all the years I’ve been writing, I keep learning. (I know I have A LOT to learn.)

There are so many aspects of writing to cultivate. But today I’m going to talk about the one thing that drastically changed my writing life.

Voice.

Yes, that ever elusive voice thing. I remember sitting in workshops and meetings and listening to the speaker talk about voice. What they were saying made sense if you could figure out exactly what voice was.

So I kept writing. Then I read Judy Baer-The Whitney Chronicles. I loved it. Immediately I read Kristin Billerbeck’s What A Girl Wants. Loved it as well. But, I thought, I could never write a book like that. First person, one POV. Long.

Hmmm. Something kept nagging me. I sat down at my computer one day with the nagging in the back of my mind. This is how it went.

What if there was a girl and her best friend and they had a guy best friend. Yeah, then the heroine will see her best friend and the guy friend falling in love. Then she’ll realize she’s loved the guy friend all along. Yeah. That’s it. That’ll work.

I started typing First person, present tense. I kept typing for about five pages. Then these thoughts came to mind.

Okay, this is clichéd. This is what always happens. So how can I make this story different? I know, I’ll keep the best friend and guy friend of the heroine falling in love, but I’ll have another guy for the heroine. Hmmm. Who? And where’s the conflict? This won’t work.

But I decided to go with the above story line and see where/how/if any conflict developed. Can you say pantser?

I soon found my heroine, Allison Doll, felt left out of everything. Her world was being turned upside down, not just with her best friends dating, but with other obstacles as well. Then, wouldn’t you know, a really cute baseball player comes to Sunday school. He is drawn to Allison, but she’s got too much going on to truly think about him. Until he takes her to a really nice place for lunch then uses the oldest excuse ever to stand her up for Sunday school. (My grandmother was sick.) When Allison realizes his grandmother is truly sick and he wasn’t lying, Ashton becomes vulnerable and hurting and, well, Allison can’t stay away.

Back to voice.

So I kept typing. 74 days later I had a 360 page, first person, present tense novel completed. I sent the manuscript off to my critique partners, Meg, Maureen and Missy. All three of them came back with one comment...

“You’ve found your voice.”

Really? The elusive voice? I found it?

I wish I could say everything was easier from that point on. But it wasn’t. I had people telling me first person is nearly impossible to sell for an unpublished author. I tried my hand at 2 more hero/heroine third person novels. (One of which is now a first person novel.) I was finaling and winning contests, but there was no interest in publication.

I struggled with voice even after I’d been told I found my voice. I wrote against my voice. I tried to maneuver my voice this way and that in hopes of attracting an editor. I approached agents with the question, “Do you like to read first person?” I had a contest judge tell me she dreaded reading my entry when she saw it was first person, but I pulled her in and she really enjoyed the story.

I’m only giving the above example because I think there are people who seem to shy away from reading first person. Personally I love reading first person and third person. I look for the story. I think if a writer has found their voice a great story can be told either way.

I know I wouldn’t be here posting this post if it wasn’t for God. Above voice and everything else I had to keep faith at the forefront of this writing venture.

So I did. Then I had an opportunity to submit to BelleBooks.

And they said yes!

What I wanted to share here today is this:
Pray.
Learn like crazy.
Pray.
Follow your gut.
Pray.
Network.
Pray.
Learn like crazy.
Pray—well, you get my point.

We often learn the same thing over and over in this crazy world of writing. But depending on where we are along the journey each opportunity to learn will affect us differently.

My moment came when I found my “voice.” What about you? What aspect of writing did you learn that absolutely made a difference in your novels?

Leave a comment with your email address to be entered in a drawing for a copy of Her Best Catch.

Thank you for having me here in Seekerville.

Oh, and here’s the little bit of baseball I promised in my post title:

Allison Doll’s mother is rebelliously turning fifty, her two best friends have started dating and gorgeous injured relief pitcher, Ashton Boyd, has joined her Sunday school class rocking her world into confusion, heartache and temptation, places she hasn’t visited in a long time, much less all at once.
But with the help of family, old friends she really hasn’t lost, a new friend she really can count on, and God, she finds herself no longer a girl waiting for life to happen, but a woman who’s ready to commit to her best catch!

  1. Yes, Helen has the coffee on. It'll be ready at 4 a.m.

Enjoyable post, Lindi. I've not had the pleasure of having anyone tell me I've found my voice, but I think I'm getting my vocal chords warmed up.

I didn't even know the post was up until I saw Mary's tweet. I had no idea it was already after midnight! LOL

  4. Thank you for the great interview. Voice is always an interesting aspect of writing to discover. I love it when my students find their voice. That's something that I find challenging too. The aspect of writing that I've been working on is show and not telling. I often have to rewrite scenes in order not to tell.

Thank you for the giveaway. Please enter me.

  5. Hello Lindi,

Good to see you here. And thanks so much for sharing your voice with us. And reminding us to write with the one God gave each of us.

I fully agree, we should 'SING' unto the Lord and he knows the best tone.

    Blessings

  6. Ugh. I hate voice. I think I have a middle school/ YA/ snarky voice but I don't have a single plot to go with. :D

  7. Virginia, spew alert needed!!!

Oh my stars, woman! Start reading EVERY YA/Middle school thing you can get from the library and go for it. Really. It will evolve naturally from what you like and don't like about the others.

    LINDI!!!!

Oh happy dancing for you in upstate NY AND... Loving that this book is coming available! Oh YAY!!!!

Welcome to Seekerville again, darling girl, and I have crepes for us this morning. I decided last night that EVERY morning is special enough for crepes, so strawberry and cottage cheese crepes are available at the breakfast bar.

And TOTAL cereal for those of you who can't even PRETEND to indulge. Seriously? You need therapy.

Lindi, bless you!!! Can't wait to read this!

  8. Good Morning, Seekers!
In honor of Lindi's guest spot today, I made a dark chocolate cake with double-thick icing. It's never too early for Chocolate! Or, Cake!

Oh, but half the pot of coffee is gone (Sorry to have drank it all!) Helen, can you make some more?

Lindi, I loved reading your story of publication!

Y'all, Lindi is a great mentor and encourager! I'm so excited her book is out and I love the cover!

I knew I could count on you for the coffee!
Keep warming those vocals. It took me quite a while to warm mine.

  12. Cynthia, Showing and telling is something I deal with a lot. I'm always having to rewrite scenes in that regard.

  13. Tina,
You're so right about singing unto the Lord with what voice he gave us. I was once in a church where the worship leader told us to sing loud. She said God gave us our voices and it's a melody to His ears. Now I feel sorry for the people around me!

    ReplyDelete
  14. Virginia---I agree with Ruthy-spew alert. Find a plot. Quickly. And write that voice.

  15. Ruthy! My friend. Thanks for the crepes. And I adore strawberries. Good job.

  16. Christy--shame on you--except the coffee must be really great-oh it is! I'm drinking some now.

  17. LINDI WOOOOOOOOHOOOOOOO

Can you hear me shouting clear across the Rio Grande?

    I'm sooooo happy for you.

No one has mentioned that cover. I love, love, love it.

Will I see you at RWA? I'll give you a BIG hug.

Don't worry Christy, I made some more coffee. Chocolate velvet to go with the cake you brought.

Cake and crepes. This is going to be a wild morning with all that sugar. smiling.

    Have fun Lindi. Congrats again.

  20. Lindi,

Congrats on the book! Allison and Ashton's story sounds so good.

It was such and AH HA moment when I found my voice. And then I wondered why it took so long and why I hadn't been using it all along. But it sure does make a story stronger when sung in the right key.

  21. Hello. My name is Laney and I'm a reader - not a writer. Please don't hold that against me, LOL!
I had to laugh when I read about turning 50. I am almost 52 and I can attest to life-altering moments from 50 onwards - some rebellious and some not. Thankfully I am in a happy marriage of 30 years (this summer), but if I were single, I can imagine being rebellious about it. We realize our clock is ticking to "get things done" - or at least I did. My scrapbooking has been beefed up in priority (as I'm only on 1991, and at this rate I'll never finish), I initiate situations in which I laugh more often (including more get-togethers with my BFFs), I turn down requests on my time for which I have no desire (no matter how much pleading is involved), and I am trying not to walk like an old lady because of my arthritic knees! The list goes on an on, but suffice to say that I have been there for my family and friends through the years and will continue to be so, but now I am being there for myself too. Big difference.

  22. Welcome to Seekerville, Lindi!!! Huge congratulations on your debut! I love the cover! I'll be getting a copy of Her Best Catch.

Voice is important and difficult to nail down. I compare a writer's voice to a singer's voice. There are some beautiful voices trying to make it big but they lack their own sound. The bigtime singers have a unique quality or style listeners either love...or not. But they stand out.

Best wishes with your book! Hoping to hang out at a conference!

    Janet

  23. That is a really cool story, Lindi, about persevering and succeeding! Congratulations on your debut novel!

I didn't realize Belle Books published Inspirationals. Do they have an Inspirational imprint, or do they publish both Inspys and everything else under the same label? Just curious. I know they only do Southern books.

    ReplyDelete
  24. Hey Lindi! So loving your cover! And can't wait to get your book!

YOUR BOOK! Aren't those lovely words?

You say discovering your voice made the difference in your writing--well, mine was learning how to plot. I know, not the thing a pantser like you likes to hear. But having an outline helped me stay on course--and gave me the freedom to let the pantser in me go wild at times.

I don't know about you guys but I'm dying for a chocolate covered donut so I brought a dozen to share with the group.

    Patty

  25. Lindi, congratulations! I'm unpublished, so I don't know if I've found my voice yet, although one agent said my voice was right on for a cozy, which is what my story is. I do know I enjoy stories in 1st or 3rd person. As a reader, I feel like some stories have to be in 1st person. I'm looking forward to reading HER BEST CATCH.

  26. Good morning Lindi!

(My photographer cousin is a Linde!)

Congratulations on your debut! So exciting!!! Tell us about the cover - no baseball? That fella sure does look nice in a tux though... And I love that stance. :) Covers fascinate me. Yes, I'm easily entertained.

I hear you on first person - mine is in "first dog." (Where are the Grammar Divas when you need them. Doesn't that look weird with the period AFTER the quote in that case? Still struggling with that. Guess I'll go tug on a coattail and ask AGAIN.)

A challenge to write in first person/dog present tense, but so worth it if the story calls for it! Sounds like your critique partners knew what they were talking about too.

Just thrilled for you! may at maythek9spy dot com

Thanks for coffee and cake and crepes. I'll leave some Coke out too since we have this "c" thing going today. :)

  27. First of all, you Seekers are bad for my diet. Ruthy, I LOVE crepes, but never get them.

Lindi, I'm so proud of you, girlfriend. Don't you love those a-ha moments? And you have a beautiful voice.

    ReplyDelete
  28. Wow - ya'll are busy this morning!

I, uh, was in bed, sound asleep by 10 last night. Hope no one went hungry! Oh wait, I see crepes, TOTAL [What ARE you thinking Ruthy?! Don't even give 'em a healthy option!] and is that cake I see?!

    Yum.

One Frasier entry is winging it's way through cyberspace to MBT as we speak. Oy. The other I had a question for them about but no one's answered it yet :p. See? Fear. Did it anyway. Oy.

I <3 writing 1st person! But past tense. Present? /shudder/ I'm also working on a third person with a suspense aspect to it and... /shudder/ I think it could very well turn out good, but it's not my natural inclination, you know? Whichever Seeker critiqued my MS said something nice about my voice =D.

The book looks great Lindi! I can imagine it's gonna find it's way into my house at some point.

You know. After I find Ruthy and Missy's. I'm off to Walmart again today. If they're not there, I'm gonna yell at somebody.

Okay - probably not. But I'll contemplate crying, then remember that I could just go order them off the website. But there's less instant gratification that way*.

    Would love to be entered!

*Yes, yes, I know. If I'd ordered 'em last week when I first couldn't find them at Walmart they'd probably be here by now. I'm ignoring that...

    Hi Lindi!

Voice? I understand what you mean about voice being "elusive"! When I go back and read things I've written (months or years later) I can hear the voice - but I still haven't gotten the hang of how to make it consistent.

I know, I know...practice, practice, practice! And I find myself coveting critiques - can hardly wait to read the critiques on my Genesis entry.

I'd love to read your book (yes, that does sound good, doesn't it?). Please enter me in the drawing...

  39. For me it was reading her on the blog about an author who writes her entire first draft, then deletes it!
After about a minute of "OMG" I thought... try it. So I did. With a chapter (Although truthfully I knew it was in the recycle bin if I got desperate hehe). And it was fantastic. What would have been days of revisions and tweaking turned into a few more hours of polishing the next day.

I love a good 1st person, and would like to be entered for the book, and the weekly five page please.

  41. Good morning, Pam and Kirsten!
Kirsten, I think my voice developed over a period of several books. When I first started, I think I was tyring to mimic all the novels I'd read. Had to find my own voice--which I think comes from our personal experiences and also from themes we tend to write about.

    ReplyDelete
  42. Laney4, where would we be without readers??!! So thank you!!

And good for you for taking care of yourself. :)

  44. Missy, anytime!

And try the cinnamon cottage cheese crepes.

I'm serious, they're to die for.

Perkins used to have them but they stopped.

I figured for LINDI'S BIG DAY it was time to resurrect (Easter use firmly intended!!! Go GOD!!!) the crepe recipe.

Tender. Warm. Delicious blend of texture and flavor.

    And send Michelle anytime, Missy.

    HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA!

  45. LINDI!!! SOOOOO FUN TO HAVE YOU HERE, GIRL AND HUGE THANKS TO MISSY FOR MAKING IT HAPPEN!!

First of all, cannot BELIEVE you are a debut author! Why did I think you were already multi-published?? Maybe it's the name -- you sound like an author. But reading your fun blog today, hearing the premise for Her Best Catch, and there is NO question about it ... you WILL be multi-published and soon.

LOVE the cover, LOVE the title and seriously can't wait to read it.

    Hugs,
    Julie

  46. I always love talking about finding your voice.

    It's such an elusive thing.

So much of writing is just really hard to EXPLAIN. So we have these posts everyday on Seekerville and I'll read something I've probably read before many times and suddenly it will click.

That's why the learning never ends. Because it's all a journey and we never fully reach our destination. And honestly, I think the minute we think we've reached our destination, we probably ought to quit.

    ReplyDelete
  47. And Lindi, it' s a pleasure to have you here.

Missy is ALWAYS talking about you to the point I think I know you, so welcome to Seekerville. Thanks for spending the day with a bunch of old friends you've mostly never met. :)

  50. Melanie, BelleBooks and Bell Bridge don't have an inspy inprint. I think Lindi's may be the first one they've picked up that is inspirational. So, yay! Maybe it'll open up for them to buy more.

They just market it, though, as sweet contemporary romance, I think.

  55. Carol, you should be able to find them today! I saw them last night at our Walmart. Got a photo of me holding my book and Ruthy's. Now, if I can just figure out my new camera and see about getting the photo uploaded to my computer to share!

Jan, you know, I don't think voice is something you really practice as much as it is something that shines through when you're writing the right stories. Writing something you enjoy and are passionate about. I think finding that perfect story showcases it. It isn't forced, and it fits who you are and where you are in life. :)

    ReplyDelete
  58. So, Nancy, you're saying that once you had the story (chapter) down on paper, then you deleted it and re-wrote it?

if I understood that right, it's a very interesting idea! Do you think it comes out better, more true to your voice, the second time?

    ReplyDelete
  59. Julie, you're right! I just critiqued her next book, and it's amazing. I think they'll snatch it up in about 5 minutes. :)

  66. Congratulations on the release of your debut novel, Lindi. Enjoy the thrill.

Thanks for sharing the tale of how you found your voice. That element can be so elusive.

When I stopped looking for my voice and asked the Lord to reveal it in His time, He did. What's funny is that it's not at all what I would've expected it to be. I read what I write and continually shake my head. Apparently, writing brings out a side of stuffy ol' me I didn't know existed. Go figure!

  73. Virginia~

A great YA series with good snark is Percy Jackson and the Olympians. If you haven't read it, I'll warn you it's not a Christian series. It's all about Greek mythology come to life. The title character is a funny sarcastic 12 year old in the first book. The series follows him through his 16th birthday (when he is the subject of a 70 year old prophecy either to save the world or destroy it). If the mythology thing bothers you, avoid it by all means. But if not, read them all, Quick! I know several teenagers who are huge Harry Potter fans, but like Percy Jackson better.

Ruthy~ I'm so after those crepes.

I certainly haven't discovered my voice, but I think it probably takes more than a few chapters to do that. A few chapters is all I have written.

I did write last night for the first time in months. What I wrote was a huge backstory dump masquerading as conversation. It drags terribly, but it's important info. Hopefully I'll stay on the ball and be able to sprinkle it liberally through the rest of the novel when I start the rewrites/revisions...in the near future (from my fingertips to God's ears).

Lindi~ Thanks for a great encouraging post. The words "debut author" are always uplifting to me. I'd love to be in the drawing for the book.

  74. Hi, Lindi! I'm so glad you're here today!

I have to say that I am one of those people who DREADS!!! 1st person POV.

    BUT!

When I find a book that is written well, I LOVE it!

I think you are right in that the author should write with their own voice. I'm actually looking forward to reading your book.

I've read some really bad 1st person stories and some okay, but there's something that's just not right.

So. PLEASE include me in the drawing. I am as anxious as can be to see if you are one of the great 1st person POV writers.

If you are, I guarantee I'll be shouting your book from the rooftops!

    Really!

Ask anybody here who really knows me. When I promote a book, I really go to town. :D

  76. Andrea, good for you!! Once you get the book finished, you can copy and paste all those juicy tidbits and place them where you need them. :) For now, just keep plowing through! You can do it.

  77. Linnette (and anyone else interested), if you click on the link to the Bell Bridge site, you'll find an excerpt there! You can check out the story now!

  79. Oh, Lindi, your debut!!! And such a beautiful cover. My gosh! It's drop dead gorgeous. And that guy in pants looks like a dream come true. Which is probably how you're feeling right about now.

So, so thrilled for your success!!! You're a wonderful writer, and the Lord is using you to touch his people with love.

Hope your drive home in ATL traffic and the ongoing storms will be safe and uneventful! We want you back on the blog so we can learn more about your journey...and the next book in the works.

  84. Congratulations Lindi!

I think the best thing I learned about writing is that it doesn't have to come out perfect the first time. Just write and then love the process of editing and revising.

Lindi, are you working on another novel for Bell Bridge Books?

  88. Missy...
It was light years better. And what was originally three chapters of *gasp* tell, not show, with mired pacing, ended up one brilliant (okay... at least I think so, hehe) chapter with two scenes.

I can't take credit for the original idea, I read it on a post here on seekerville as a recount of a conference speaker's method.

I actually found that I eliminated one minor character, tons of erroneous narrative that stole the emotion and experience of the scene from the reader and gave it to my main character.

Writing from only the memory of what was supposed to have been accomplished in that chapter narrowed my focus and for me was MUCH EASIER than looking at each line, paragraph, deciding... do you advance plot, contribute to characterization or setting?

I was amused when some of the stronger better lines emerged in both drafts without me being conscious of it until after the fact.

I still don't know if I've found my voice... I think someone else will have to tell me one day and then depending on who they are... then I'll know ;-)

  89. And something else Casey and I have in common...

    I am so a pantser!!!

Surprise elopement in the last book. Seriously. Not the main characters, but a sibling.

And just for Missy and Ruthy...

  90. And yes - Mr. Baseball Player looks very very nice... =D

  92. Keli Gwyn, I'm dying laughing here...

I love that inside stuffy old you lurks this funny snark...

The snark and I are closely acquainted, LOL!

So funny. Delightfully in your face. From such a NICE, GENTEEL woman.

    Still waters run deep, chickie!

I love Lindi's voice in person. Can't wait to see how delightful it is in print.

Hey, fresh chocolate brownies made by Kyle. With chocolate chips. Ghirardelli, of course. And homemade Hershey's dark glossy chocolate frosting.

These are bakery-style brownies and YUM...

    Lindi is worth it all.

One thing I just thought of after clicking over to CarolM's blog (so, so cute!) is that you should try looking at your blog posts. I bet you'll find your voice. I think Carol's is right there on her blog pages. :)

Ruthy, honey, you know if you didn't feed me I'd waste away. I'd be a skinny as a bean pole. So bring on those brownies! (Oh, is my nose growing??)

  97. Missy's right, as usual. :) Blog posts are a great way to determine someone's voice. Even emails reflect how we write.

Notice Ruthy's voice, which always comes through on her comments.

    Mary's too.

  98. Congratulations, Lindi, on such a wonderful first book. I read your Seekerville blog and the excerpt from your book. Wow! Had to go directly to Amazon to buy the book before I could make a comment here.

  118. I'm glad you perservered, Lindi. It is such fun to discover new authors. I enjoyed your discussion of "voice." I'm not sure why some people don't like reading books written in first person. If the book is well written with a good plot, it doesn't matter to me how the story is told.
It would be fun to win your book.
    Thanks for sharing.

  120. WHOA, LINDI ... you're ROCKIN' this place, girlfriend!!!

And, Missy, you lucky dog -- you get to read Lindi's ms. ahead of time???

Hey, Lindi ... I don't have many giveaways until August through October usually when I have TONS (gave away over close to 70 books last year during the same time period). BUT ... ironically, I have two blog giveaways I am doing this week and next where I'm giving away reader's choice of signed book, so if you are interested, you can find the dates and links on my website calendar. One way or another, we HAVE to get that book in your hands, girlfriend! :)

  124. So instead of doing things I needed to be doing [like writing reviews :p], I uh cuddled up with the Man of Allegany County [because there's only one so far]. All this talk about voice and Missy's mention of Ruthy's voice coming through in her comments etc. led me to NY instead of... well, just my laptop.

Ruthy dear - I think I love you. And I loved the Wassermans. ;)

And Missy - I may have had a flash of humorous inspiration. Casey gets at least part of the blam.. er credit. But I'm a pantser remember? Can't just sit down and write an outline... =D. But I do have a nice paragraph long synopsis all done!!!

I could so do it as a series of short installments somewhere, but dunno if I've got what it takes to pull it off novel length...

Pay no attention to the night vision goggles. None at all...

  128. Good Morning Helen,

I know what you mean when you say trying to find your voice. I am struggling with POV and it sometimes gets the best of me but then I think my writing is my world. I love it, I breath it so whatever it takes do not ever give up.

I wish there was some magic to learning POV but you have to keep writing.

Thanks and please enter me into your drawing
