Seekerville Welcomes Guest Birthday Blogger Donna Alward

It’s October 4 which means I’m here at Seekerville today to celebrate the official launch of my newest Harlequin Romance, HOW A COWBOY STOLE HER HEART!

So grab a coffee and visit for a spell as I reveal some behind-the-scenes bits about the book, let you know some special plans going on for the month, give you an exclusive excerpt, and most off all a CHANCE TO WIN some great books!

I was chatting to a friend one day about the release date and she happened to mention that HOW A COWBOY STOLE HER HEART is out during Breast Cancer Awareness Month. Wow, I thought, because the heroine, Meg, is a breast cancer survivor trying to rebuild her life after treatment. I knew I wanted to do something special to coincide with the many events going on to support breast cancer research and awareness. So…in that spirit, I’d like to invite you all to visit my blog at www.donnaalward.blogspot.com all this month where you can find ways you can help and support your local foundations, read some inspiring stories from some very special guests, and learn some new and interesting facts about breast cancer in 2011. It’s all about THINK PINK for the month.

I’d been wanting to write a cancer story for a while - I try not to shy away from real-life topics in my stories, instead choosing to show the positive happy endings out of adversity, you know? And I’m fairly sure everyone has been touched by cancer in some form. On a personal level, my grandmother had colon cancer and my step-dad was recently diagnosed with it as well (and his prognosis is excellent, thank goodness!). My father-in-law had prostate cancer. There is a fear that is built into the “C” word – even when the diagnosis and prognosis are excellent. Because it’s CANCER.

When I thought of Meg Briggs, I wondered what it would be like to be diagnosed at such a young age, and then come home to rebuild your life. How much would someone change? What would stay the same? Would she be fearless or afraid or a bit of both? Would she live for the moment and finally tell Clay that she loved him? Or would she hang back, uncertain?

Clay Gregory, for what it’s worth, was a complete pain in my patoot. He first showed up in ONE DANCE WITH THE COWBOY and I fell in love. He totally demanded his own story, but I could never find him the right woman. I tried. But those stories just didn’t pan out. FINALLY I figured out that it was Meg he was waiting for, and once I clued in to that tiny fact, it all fell into place. This story wasn’t easy to tell. Their relationship isn’t easy either. But it was worth it for me and I hope it is for you, too. Rumour has it you might want to keep a few tissues on hand for a few certain scenes…

It was really quite fun having Clay figure out that Meg was a woman rather than his best friend’s little sister. Look what happens…

“He made his way over to her and put on a smile. “I see you made it here just fine.”

“I came with Dad.” She smiled up at him and that same weird tightening happened again. “He’s gone off to talk stock.”

“Normally you’d be there with him.” Meg wasn’t the kind of girl who left the business to the men; she knew what she was about. It was one of the things he truly admired about her.

“Today’s not an ordinary day,” she replied, taking a sip of punch. His gaze caught on her lips as they touched the glass.

“It certainly isn’t,” he agreed, but his voice came out low and...dear Lord. Intimate. God. He was no better than Tom Walker with that silly, besotted look on his face. Clay cleared his throat but not before Meg’s eyes gleamed with mischief. Great. Bad enough he was reacting to her this way. But to have her notice made him feel ten times a fool.

Lily and Noah moved off to chat with other guests, leaving Meg and Clay alone. Clay made himself forget the way the dress fit her gentle curves and focused on the task at hand. “You seem to be managing okay. No awkward questions, I take it?”

“A few.” The flirtatious gleam he’d seen in her eye tempered. “I just keep reminding myself that people mean well. For the most part,” she amended, looking at a pair of grey-haired women who were standing by the punch bowl, heads together.

Clay felt a flare of irritation on her behalf, glad to be talking about old ladies rather than besotted young men. “Some people aren’t happy unless they’re criticizing or spreading doom and gloom.”

Meg lowered her head and he heard an indelicate snort. “Oh, you poor dear. I do hope you stay looking so well,” she said in a stage whisper.

“They actually said that?” He was appalled.

“Of course. They feed on the possibility of catastrophe,” she remarked lightly.

It was no laughing matter to Clay. More than anything he worried about her cancer coming back, not that he’d say so to her face. He wouldn’t take away from the happiness of her recovery by admitting such a thing. She was one of the strongest women he knew, and he reached out to take her hand. “Don’t you listen to them,” he ordered. “You’re healthy as a horse and you look beautiful.”

“Thank you, Clay.” A pretty blush touched her cheeks and his chest swelled.

“I’ve got your back, remember?”

“I remember,” she replied softly, and his heart did a little shiver against his ribs. This wasn’t keeping it simple or purely friendly.

“If anyone bothers you, let me know.”

“Anyone like who, in particular?” She’d cocked her head to the left, as if trying to figure him out. He clenched his jaw.

“Oh, like Tom Walker. Or Jason Callow. Or…whoever.”

“Interesting,” she said speculatively, her eyes narrowing as she examined him. He couldn’t escape the feeling she was laughing at him on the inside. “Are you jealous, Clay?”

He dropped her hand. “Just wanted you to remember our agreement, that’s all.” He had to come up with another distraction. “Here’s Jen and Andrew,” he suggested, tilting his head toward the couple who had just come in. “Good safe people for both of us, right?”

Now to the good stuff – PRIZES and FREE STUFF!

Today I’m going to give away three books - and it’s winner’s choice of either of my new releases – HOW A COWBOY STOLE HER HEART or OFF THE CLOCK (adult content), or any backlist title (as long as I still have a copy – I’m short on a few). There’s a complete booklist on my site. All you have to do is leave a comment in the comments section . Winners will be announced in the Weekend Edition of Seekerville.

An avid reader since childhood, Donna always made up her own stories. She completed her Arts Degree in English Literature in 1994, but it wasn’t until 2001 that she penned her first full-length novel, and found herself hooked on writing romance. In 2006 she sold her first manuscript.

Donna loves being back on the East Coast of Canada after nearly 12 years in Alberta where her Harlequin career began, writing about cowboys and the west. Donna’s debut Romance, HIRED BY THE COWBOY, was awarded the Booksellers Best Award in 2008 for Best Traditional Romance.

  1. Oh wow Donna that's a really great cover you got there. It's nice to read romances with heroines who are "real" and have had problems that a lot of women deal with. I look forward to reading it and checking out those freebies.

  2. Congratulations Donna! Thank you for sharing this today. Totally LOVED this line: They feed on the possibility of catastrophe. Super! HA!

Ok - so - (adult content) - Uhmmm can you elaborate a wee bit on this please? Meaning - I guess... can you be a bit more specific in what that entails and is it within the context of marriage or ?? I guess I'm asking does it uphold Biblical values? Or... not...

Thanks so much for being in Seekerville today. :)

  3. It's DONNA!!

Welcome back to Seekerville. I am a Donna Alward book collector and I am excited to add your new release to my list.

The other thing I must mention is Donna has a really nice newsletter. One of the few that are actually interesting and fun. Always something in there that's fun...a recipe or info!

  4. Thanks for sharing with us Donna and thanks for the tissue warning. I don't mind a book that makes me cry but knowing ahead of time is always good :) Love the cover and it sounds like a great read.

  6. Adult content means it is neither G nor PG rated and is much spicier than a Christian Inspirational.

You have to determine what level of sensuality are comfortable with but we like to give you a heads up.

Then you the consumer make your own private decision. :)

  7. Happy birthday and happy anniversary! Free books, too? wowza.

This sounds like a book I need to read.

    Thanks for the visit.

  11. Donna~

I love that you're willing to deal with real life issues, showing they can end happily. My mother-in-law is a breast cancer survivor. A stronger woman I've never met. Cancer free going on five years I think. Praise God.

I lost a grandfather to what started out as prostate cancer, and ended up pretty well everywhere. And a grandmother lung cancer (she died the day I found out about my m-i-l's diagnosis. Terrible, No Good, Very Bad Day). So of course I love the reminders that people can, and do beat it.

    Prayers for your step-dad.

I'd absolutely love to win How a Cowboy Stole Her Heart. Nothing with "adult content" though, I've sworn off the steamy stuff.

  12. By "steamy stuff" I do not mean Helen's wonderful coffee. Does a body good, especially if you add milk ;)

  13. How a Cowboy Stole Her Heart sounds like a lovely romance. I will try to read it soon.

    ReplyDelete
  14. I like how the real life issues are wound up in a very light-hearted flirtation scene! No adult content books for me either, because I got nosy kids around. I used to enjoy some of the steamier fiction but I got tired of making sure nobody under the age of 18 picked it up from wherever I left it. Probably better that way, anyway!

    ReplyDelete
  15. Hi Donna! It's hard to tackle real life issues but definitely a reward in the end! The scene you shared was really sweet and I think your hero is fabulous! I love that you had a hard time finding the perfect match for him... like life I'd say ;)

If I'm entered in the drawing, I'm not particular on which book. Any of them sound good. Thanks! christylashea at gmail dot com

  16. Congrats on your release! I do love that cover. Don't you love it when the cover fairy is good to you?

I am with KC on the "they feed on the possibility catastrophe line."

See you over on the blog on Thursday! :-)

    Peace, Julie

  17. Donna, I love your writing. It draws the reader into the hero and heroine's life organically and that seamlessness shows throughout.

And it's TEEEEEEENA RADCLIFFE'S fault that I even know who you are, but now you've got another upstate New York fan.

And I love that you don't shy from tough topics. It's not easy to thread a big book into a short word count, but you're good at it! Keep up the good work and huge thanks for hanging out in Seekerville today for birthday cake and surprises!!!

    I love both!

Hey, today's Cake is Dark Chocolate Madness....

Dark chocolate cake layered with chocolate mousse and drenched in dark chocolate icing....

  18. Hi Donna,

I'm joining in on the love for this line - They feed on the possibility of catastrophe.

    So apt.

Happy Tuesday, Seekerville. Off to write some before work.

  19. Oh my word! It's not even 8 am here on the east coast and look at all the lovely faces! Thanks everyone for coming out and helping me celebrate. I'm so excited for today!

KC - Tina pretty much nailed it with the "adult content" question. In my Harlequin Romances, the bedroom door is CLOSED. In my Samhain books it's open - about the same heat level as a Harlequin Desire, in my opinion. Now, to be honest - the hero and heroine ARE married, so biblically we're okay. :-) BUT it may be a bit TMI if the open door policy is not to your taste. :-)

Tina, thanks for the great words about the newsletter. I try to keep it short and fun. :-) If anyone is interested, there are sign up boxes on my website at www.donnaalward.com and on my blog, too.

  20. Thanks for your post! I can't wait to read your new book. I love books that make me cry, as long as there's a happy ending (I hope). 24. It appears that Harlequin Romance has changed their covers. Is that right or just this book has a different look.

  26. Hi Donna,

I enjoy books that work health issues into the story lines because it makes the story more true to life.

Unfortunately, we all know someone who's been effected by cancer:( and I
think it's great that your book released in coordination with breast cancer awareness.

If I don't win it, I'll definately look for in the stores!

  27. Hi Donna!

I totally love the premise of HOW THE COWBOY STOLE HER HEART! So many of us have friends and family who fought and won, or fought and lost, the battle with cancer and I love that you’ve tackled that subject in this story. Clay and Meg sound like characters who will stay with the reader long after “the end.”

I finished HIRED BY THE COWBOY the other day and highly recommend it!! And SOLD TO THE HIGHEST BIDDER is on my TBR.

All the best with your new releases! I look forward to reading them both.

  28. Thanks Cathy and Sara for popping by!

Tina - as far as I know, this is the only book with a different cover treatment. I nearly wept when I saw it, it's so pretty. Some other authors in other lines have seen slightly different covers - BJ Daniels comes to mind, as does Carol Marinelli for Presents and Sarah Mayberry in Supers.

  29. Rose, Leanne, and Annie - thanks for visiting Seekerville and helping me celebrate the launch! Hope you grab a slice of cake (calorie free!) - I'm off for a second cup of coffee before I sit down to write!

Okay, I just have to ask, maybe it's because you're from Canada, lived in Western Canada and write about cowboys, have you ever used Terry Grant as inspiration? Yes, I have a little obsession with Mantracker. ;) But then, unless the rodeo's in town, we don't see too many 'real' cowboys around here.

  60. Hi Patricia! I remember seeing you around my blog a lot in those days...it's nice to see you again!

Cowboy books...okay, let me see. For the Romance line:

    Hired By The Cowboy
    Marriage at Cirle M
    The Rancher's Runaway Princess
Montana, Mistletoe, Marriage (cowgirl instead of cowboy)
    One Dance with the Cowboy
Her Lone Cowboy (cowboy AND a soldier all in one!)
    Proud Rancher, Precious Bundle
Honeymoon with the Rancher (argentine Gaucho, lol!)
A Family For the Rugged Rancher
How A Cowboy Stole Her Heart

    Non cowboy HR's
    The Soldier's Homecoming
Falling for Mr. Dark and Dangerous (US Marshal)
    Hired: The Italian's Bride

And my Samhain books have a businessman, a veterinarian, another businessman/cowboy type, a winery owner, and a paramedic. :-)

Mostly cowboys. They're yum and my readers seem to appreciate them. :-)

    ReplyDelete
  61. Christina - I'll confess I don't watch Mantracker!

You know I happen to write cowboys and ranchers but I tend to view them in a less "western" sort of light and more from a "farmer" perspective. I keep wondering if they'll let me write a dairy farmer or wheat farmer. Somehow I'm not sure a title like "The Holstein Affair" would really be a big seller...

WELCOME to Seekerville, and it was SO much fun getting a behind-the-scenes look at your latest -- VERY COOL!!

I admire you for tackling "cancer" because it's a touchy subject in romance. Our Seeker bud, Glynna Kaye, did it well in Dreaming of Home, and our other Seeker bud, Ruth Logan Herne, handled it beautifully in Winter's End, but it's NOT an easy thing to do, so I applaud you!

Looks like I need to get my mitts on some of your books ...

  72. Donna, I know what you mean. I write historicals and mine aren't necessarily the typical 'cowboy' type. More like small farmers. In fact, my hero isn't even a cowboy, but a Pinkerton Det. The heroine is trying to run her farm on her own.

I think the Holstein angle would be interesting. Of course, I see a lot of those arond here.

  73. Ruth - I'm just overwhelmed by all the comments! There's a reason I asked if I could come back after my first visit, and then asked if I could hold a launch here. It is a wonderful place to be. :-)

  74. Looks great, Donna. Beautiful cover, as well, and a tough but important subject. Congrats on the release, from one east coaster to another!

  75. Anita Mae, being a friend of Seekerville is sort of like sitting in the exit row on an airplane. There is a certain amount of responsibility implicit with the job.

You are just a friend, and it isn't just a seat with leg room.

If all the Seekers are out of commission you guys have to step in.

  76. Donna, welcome! Thanks so much for being with us today. I loved your excerpt! I love stories where friends fall in love!! One of my favorite themes. :)

  78. Hello Donna,

Enjoyed the excerpt, Congrats on your newest release.

Isn't it interesting how characters have such a mind of their own, they even have a say so in who they're willing to fall for?

  83. We really do think of cancer as a death sentence. But they are making such headway in the fight.

My mother had bone cancer and went through a stem cell transplant. She just had her 70. But my sisters and I were talking about how now we thinking about that C word and wondering if we were going to get it.

I really liked how your story flowed and how she dealt with the well meaning people.

They come out in droves when hard times arise.

I remember thinking through my mom's ordeal and my father's with heart trouble, If I could just strangle a few of them, I'd be very happy.

Sounds lovely of me. but it's the truth

  85. Ok guys...I'm going to be popping out for a while. It's workout time as the ongoing battle against writer's butt is long and arduous. I'm putting the kids on supper duty, though, since today's workout is a glorious hour after which I doubt I shall be able to walk.

I'll pop in this evening to catch up with everyone!

  86. Critiquing with cp Anna Adams at Panera Bread Company! Wanted to get on and read today's blog. Lovely, Donna! Enjoyed your excerpt. The story sounds like a must read!

Thanks for being with us in Seekerville!

Ruthy, did you mention birthday cake?

    Pretty please?

  87. Oh, cowboys!
I think real life struggles are hard to write sometimes because they're so close to home for some people and at other times it's easier to write about something like that. Great post :)

    ReplyDelete
  88. Donna, so glad you could join us in Seekerville today!

The premise of your story sounds beautiful. No one likes to think about the C-word, but it's a reality in the lives of so many people. If not in our own lives, then certainly for someone in our family or circle of friends. Congratulations for tackling this emotional-charged topic.

Speaking of pink, our entire newspaper today was printed on pink newsprint! Hard on the eyes, yes, but certainly a vivid reminder!

  90. Julie was SO NICE to Glynna and me.

She must want something. But, what?

    Oh.

    Wait.

IT'S THAT BABY. THE BABY HAS TURNED HER MUSHY.

    I LOVE IT!!!!

  91. Birthday cake, YES....

    I wish I could post a pic.

Imagine dark, moist, deep chocolate cake....

Thin, layers, multiples, each one filled with chocolate mousse. No antlers/rack... must be a girl mousse.

    (hahahahahaha!)

Now imagine this dredged in chocolate frosting, the dark, glossy recipe found in the Hershey's book...

    1/2 cup butter, melted
    1/2 cup cocoa

    Mix them together.

    Add:

    3 cups powdered sugar
    A pinch of salt
    1/3 - 1/2 cup milk

Whisk together. Add a little more milk until of spreading consistency. Taste. Should be AMAZING.

This is a less-than-five-minute recipe and so much better than anything in a can. Really.

Totally worthy of Seeker birthday bash cake-ness!

    :)

  93. Adult content? Are you actually promoting sex in marriage? This sounds like a book husbands would buy for their wives.

Let's face it ladies, we want our husbands to understand our needs for emotional intimacy, but physical intimacy is just as important to them. I applaud you, Donna. I think you're right on target to improve Christian marriages.

Count me in for THAT book.

stopped to see our dear friend/old babysitter and she has two cats who had kittens recently and though most of them are gone [and the rest moved outside] the residual catness has done a number on my eyes/head.

  95. Peggy - honey, you made me burst out laughing, which resurrected my cough from last week's flu...thank you for clearing my bronchial tubes!

OK so to fess up - they ARE married but they're...estranged. Yes, it's a reunion story.

But you DID make me crack up. I've been with my husband for 20 years, married for 16 (there goes Tina's theory that I'm actually 13, though my inner child is about that age). Marriage is not for the faint of heart. But when strong hearts are involved...it all comes out right. :-)

Our anniversary is next Friday. :-)

  97. Thank you for sharing the excerpt of How a Cowboy Stole Her Heart. Sounds like a touching sensitive story.

I just lost my uncle to lung cancer a couple of weeks ago. He was my last uncle. My other two uncles also died of cancer (they were all my mother's brothers). I've also lost an aunt to cancer and my dad died at the age of 61 to lung cancer. I have a cousin who has battled breast cancer three times and is a survivor. Praise the Lord! To say I hate the "c" word would be an understatement.

I'd like to thank you for taking on this sensitive subject matter.

I would love to be entered to win a copy of How a Cowboy Stole Her Heart.

    Smiles & Blessings,
    Cindy W.

  107. Loves 2 Read Romance - LauraOctober 4, 2011 at 9:23 PM

Thanks for sharing with us Donna. I like that romance books are having our hero's and heroine's face real problems. It helps the reader connect to them. I also think it's very interesting that your newest book has a heroine that over came breast cancer and that it came out during this month. What great timing.

As tired as I am, the excerpt drew me end and kept me reading to the end.

I'd love to win a book. I'm too tired to go back and see the choices. :)

I will go download the one free one for a later reading on the iPad.

Thanks for a lovely read. Sometimes reading something good is so much better than talking craft. Thanks!

  118. Hey all - thought I'd check in this morning to see if I'd missed anyone - I know my ten o'clock is pretty early the further west you go. :-) Cathy - sorry I missed you!

It is a wild and wet day here on the east coast - it's been raining since last evening and this is after getting nearly 4 inches on the weekend. Ugh! High winds too. A good day to curl up and write, right?

I'm also walking like the tin man. I took a few weeks off working out due to being sick and then began my program again (on a harder level) and boy am I feeling it!

Since food seems to be a necessity, I'm leaving hot coffee and maple pecan danishes. :-)
