Why Writers are Like Pirates with Guest Blogger Captain Jack Sparrow

Greetings, writers!

Many of you are aware that I am penning my story. Some consider it a piece of fiction, others call it a thrilling autobiographical peek into the life of the world famous (and handsome) pirate captain of the Black Pearl.

Either way, the fact is I don't spend all my time on Unpublished Island waiting to be rescued, my pistol with a single bullet at me side. No, at times sit, pen in hand (rum in the other) writing.  One thing I've learned since I began writing is that writing is a lot like pirating. You have your scallywags, your bloody pirates, your scoundrels and your traitors.

And then there are the rules. Ah, yes, the rules.

Pirates have rules : The Pirates Code.

Known rules and guidelines of code from the Pirata Codex: (From the Pirates of the Caribbean Wiki)
  • Rule one, befriend others wisely.
  • The Right of Parlay
  • Artycle II, Section I, Paragraph VIII (sharing of the spoils)
  • Artycle II, Section II, Paragraph I (whoever first spotted a treasure-laden ship could choose the best pistol for themselves)
  • Every crew member is to have an equal share in any treasure found
  • Any man who falls behind is left behind
  • An act of war and parley with adversaries may only be declared by the Pirate King, who could only be elected by popular vote by all nine Pirate Lords.
  • Any person who refuses to serve aboard a pirate's ship must die.
  • Trading for products fair and square mean the seller can do as they like, including resell at profit.
  • The Code also contains strict regulations on eye patch color and peg leg size  as well as implying that a pirate never gives another away.

"The Code is the law." -Edward Teague.

Writers Have Rules: The Writers List of Ten

1. Thou shalt show not tell.
2. Point of View may not be shifted in a paragraph
3. Avoid overuse of exclamation points!!!
4. No sentence fragments.
5. Don't use adverbs (especially LY adverbs)
6. Write actively not passively.
7. Eliminate dialogue tags.
8. Avoid over use of exposition, narrative and description.
9. Plot everything.
10. Always follow the rules.

Whilst the rules do bear merit and most of the time should be honored (like invoking the rule of parlay). There are times that it seems to me that rules can be a bit superfluous, thus made to be broken.  As Captain Barbossa puts it, "The Code is more what you call guidelines than actual rules."

In the end, remember this:

"The only two rules that  really matter are these:What a man can do. And what a man can't do."-Captain Jack Sparrow.

One caveat: No rule breaking until you master the rules. Savvy?

The Brethren Court

Writers and Pirates Have Token Organizations

Another thing I have discovered as I have steered my way into this writing world is there are several writing organizations, similar, I am told to the Brethen Court.  The Brethren Court being the formal organization  consisting of the nine Pirate Lords and their followers. Pirate Lords are of course elected officials who rule the pirate world.

A bit of trivia for you: I of course was the youngest pirate ever to become a Pirate Lord.

Reviews. Let's discuss reviews.

Pirates get them too you know.

"You are without doubt the worst pirate I have ever heard of." -Commodore Norrington.

"But you have heard of me."-Captain Jack Sparrow  (I love to quote myself.)

"That is without doubt the worst pirate I have ever seen."-Commodore Norrington. (Note: Scathing reviewers aren't usually very original.)

And sometimes the reviews contradict each other, don't they!

"That's got to be the best pirate I've ever seen." -Captain Groves.

Remember, sometimes a bad review can be just as effective in getting your name out there as a good review. Oh, and always consider the source, eh?

("Sticks and stones, Luv." -Captain Jack Sparrow.)

Writer Etiquette.

This is not unlike pirate etiquette. I have included some lines you might find useful when dealing with an editor, agent, critique partner or perhaps you might find them particularly helpful at one of those writerly functions and/or soirees. Insert names as needed.

  •   "I am disinclined to acquiesce to your request." Captain Barbossa.)

  • "This is either madness or brilliance." (Will Turner.)
  • "Abandon ship. Abandon ship." (Lt. Gillette.)
  • "Not all treasure is silver and gold, mate." (Captain Jack Sparrow.)
  • "No heroes amongst thieves." (Will Turner.)
  •  "They'll be no living with her after this." (Captain Jack Sparrow)
  • "If I may be so bold as to interject my professional opinion?" (Captain Jack Sparrow)
  • "Drinks all around!" (Jack Sparrow)
  • "We have an accord!" (Captain Barbossa)
  •  "I think we've all arrived at a very special place. Spiritually, ecumenically, grammatically." (Captain Jack Sparrow)

Aye, but it's liberating to know you now have the perfect response for all those special situations courtesy of Captain Jack Sparrow.  I suggest writing them on index cards and keeping them close at conference.

That would be my bit of Captain Jack Sparrow wisdom for the day. Back to Speedbo, mates.

But first it's only fair I offer a wee bit of my treasure to my favorite writers.

Three treasures. Three winners. What is it you ask? Something even a pirate would covet.

And it's a surprise.

Just share your favorite Captain Jack Sparrow quote.

Hard to choose. I understand. But choose ye must!

I bid you...Adieu

  1. Some of my favs were already used and my mind is drawing a blank for all except the newest movie. So here are my 3 favs from that one:
"Did everyone see that? 'Cause I will not be doing it again!" and
"He's even more annoying in miniature" and
    "Your Royal Heinie"

  2. LOL, great post!!! Captain Jack Sparrow is my favorite character in all the pirate movies, keeps me laughing the whole way through :)

    Here's a quote I found:
You know, for having such a bleak outlook on pirates you are well on your way to becoming one: sprung a man from jail, commandeered a ship of the fleet, sailed with a buccaneer crew out of Tortuga, and you're completely obsessed with treasure.

Good stuff! Thanks for the giveaway, I always learn so much here :)
    Blessings, Kara

  3. PAWSOME, Cap'n Jack!

You've already listed my top quote uttered from your luscious lips: "There'sll be no living with her after this." HA!

Good ones - on to the finish, sir!!

  4. This was GREAT Captain Jack.
My favorite quote of yours is:
"You need to find a girl, mate." ;-)

  5. Ladies and Gents,

The ship has docked and I am here.

I bring treasures from the Island.

Give the Captain a big Seekerville welcome!

    Don't be shy!!

    ReplyDelete
  6. Wait! I have no picture.

    I have no picture.

    Let us correct this injustice!

    Immediatley!

    ReplyDelete
  7. For a fleeting moment, I thought I was ...dead.

Luscious lips, eh, KC! or was that the dog who said that?

    ReplyDelete
  8. Welcome Captain! Glad you found a suitable picture, thanks so much for being here and for still being alive :)

    ReplyDelete
  9. Indeed sir, you bring a fresh perspective with today's posting and I'm glad you have arrived. I trust The Black Pearl is in good condition and brought you safely :)

    ReplyDelete
  10. I loved this one: "You can keep doing that forever, the dog is NEVER going to move."

    ReplyDelete
  11. Whooooo-eeeee!!! Madness and a little too much rum, I'm thinkin'. But I love Captain Jack Sparrow's occasional appearances here. With or without a picture, Jack, you're um... uh... unique.

I'd say my favourite quote of yours is right here: "Not all treasure is silver and gold, mate." And that's because I know the kind of treasure we've found around Seekerville, thanks to everyone's big hearts.

This place is a true gem! Gold, silver and diamonds can't equal it's value. As we hit this last day of Speedbo writing, I have to say this is THE BEST community of writers in cyberspace. Oh, I know, we're on an island here, not in space, but let's not get nitpicky over words. What a fantastic support group.

Anyway, I'm hoisting the sails to grab some of Jack's hot air for this last part of our Speedbo journey. Write like the wind, everyone!!

    ReplyDelete
  12. A woman after me own heart. Hot air indeed.

(Well, on occasion perchance...but only on Fridays.)

    ReplyDelete
  13. Nancy, I love the prison dog. He looks like Mother Sparrow. Hairy with big brown eyes.

    ReplyDelete
  14. Ah, rats! I can't leave a glaring error like that in a comment on a writing site, can I?

Meant to say, "Gold, silver and diamonds can't equal its value." :)

    ReplyDelete
  15. This is so hard as I have only seen 2 movies and the second one I flicked through as I didn't like it haven't watched any since.
    I found one I like.
Jack Sparrow: Do us a favor... I know it's difficult for you... but please, stay here, and try not to do anything... stupid.

the other one is Jack Sparrow: Stop blowing holes in my ship!

    ReplyDelete
  16. LOL Carol, I thought it was well spoken and very true.

    ReplyDelete
  17. I haven't seen any of those movies! Can I admit that without being SHOT??

But I really do enjoy Cap'n jack here on Seekerville, so maybe I'll be forgiven. :)

    ReplyDelete
  18. Virginia, I think we would be in the same boat. (I looked up quotes online).

    ReplyDelete
  19. My favorite quote is one word, you should do well with this writing venture since you can make a single word memorable.

    Will: You cheated!
    Jack: Pirate.

    ReplyDelete
  20. I've so been looking forward to today! Jack Sparrow himself is here!

    /swoon/

    (hide the rum)

    My favorite Jack Sparrow quote?

    Will: You cheated.
    Jack: Pirate.

Ah, we often quote Jack's words of wisdom at our house...ad infinitum.

    ReplyDelete
  21. Melissa, great minds think alike!

    ReplyDelete
  22. Love this post and these quotes! Great quotes in the comments, too. Here's one that can be adapted for many occasions . . .

Jack Sparrow: "So we are all men of our word really. Except for Elizabeth, who is--in fact--a woman."

It's great seeing you, Captain Jack!

    ReplyDelete
  23. Oh, and can I add this bit of dialogue? Just because I love Capt. Jack's concern for grammar . . .

Jack Sparrow: "We are very much alike, you and I, I and you . . . us."
Elizabeth Swann: "Oh. Except for a sense of honor and decency and a moral center. And personal hygiene."
    Jack Sparrow: "Trifles."

    ReplyDelete
  24. Oh phew, Virginia. If you admitted it, I guess I can too. Haven't seen a one of the movies and know me no quotes!

    Sorry, Cap'n.

I am, however, reading a book about privateers. Does that redeem me at all?

    ReplyDelete
  25. "Not all treasure is silver and gold, mate." I didn't remember you saying this but am so glad you did. Today is megamillions day and I didn't buy a ticket. You comfort me, Captain Jack. You really do.

May I just say once I saw your tales, my love for Errol Flynn's Seahawk character went totally by the wayside.

I have printed off your ten writer rules to stick on a post-it! Thanks again.

    Peace, Julie

  26. "There'll be no living with her after this."

Here's an interesting real live is weird note. A few years ago my mom had a big party for my grandmother's 100th birthday.
A cousin told me my grandmother was engaged to Johnny Depp's grandfather.
And another thing to make you pause, my brother and Johnny were born in the same hospital about the same time years later.
No offense to the Depps, but I'm glad she broke it off and waited to meet my granddaddy.
Thanks for sharing a fun post.
    Jackie L.

  27. Captain Jack!!! Ahoy Mate. Good to see you here in Seekerville.

My favorite quote from you---Can I tell?

It was a secret. But hey.

It was back on Unpubbed Island and you whispered in my ear- "Luv ya, Sandra. You'll make it some day."

Come here Mate and give me a hug.

    ReplyDelete
  28. "I love those moments. I like to wave at them as they pass by."

"Me? I’m dishonest, and a dishonest man you can always trust to be dishonest. Honestly."

Couldn't send just one quote. Love your humor, Captain Jack. I think you and Mark Twain would have hit it off beautifully.

    gilliach(at)yahoo(dot)com

    ReplyDelete
  29. Fun post with great advice from the Captain. And if writing doesn't work out, I now have to tools to be a pirate. ;o)

Here's a couple of my favorite quotes.

"If you were waiting for the opportune moment...that was it" (to Will Turner)

"You know that feeling you get when you’re standing in a high place… sudden urge to jump?… I don’t have it."

    ReplyDelete
  30. Captain Jack!

What a wonderful way to start the day, reading your bits of wisdom.

I can't remember or find my favorite Captain Jack Sparrow quote. It comes from the second movie and it's about telling the truth. So here is my second favorite....

"I think we've all arrived at a very special place. Spiritually, ecumenically, grammatically."

Seldom to I bring food to Seekerville but in honor of the special pirate guest, here is a plate of rum balls.

    ReplyDelete
  31. I love this post! (makes me want to watch the movies again....)

My favorite Cap'n Jack Sparrow quote has to be when he's stranded on the island with Elizabeth - "But why is the rum gone?"

    =)

    ReplyDelete
  32. Will come back and read the comments later... but my favorite quote has to be:

    "Drinks all around!" (Jack Sparrow)

Why? Um... Jack, I hate to tell you this, buddy, but I've not seen your movies. My kids have your LEGO Wii Game though...

Now, if we were talking about another pirate, I could go with "As You Wish" ;).

A little over 3K yesterday for Speedbo. Means I have 11743 left. Dunno if I can swing Panera tomorrow or not, but I did have the rest of the plot fall in place.

And btw - that rule about plotting... it doesn't all have to be done ahead of time does it? Cuz I do mine as I go... In the mist...

Gotta go renew tags and then have a 'sick' kiddo home with me again... Hopefully, now that I know where this thing is going I can do better today than yesterday.

    Carol

    ReplyDelete
  33. Alas, I've yet to meet the captain on the big screen so I can't venture a favourite quote. I'm enjoying reading all the others though. :-) It must be nice to be so quotable.

    ReplyDelete
  34. Gotta say, my favorite Captain Jack Sparrow quote is:

"Why is all the rum gone?"

    :)

    Happy Friday, Jack!

    ReplyDelete
  35. Oh, how fun! Welcome Captain! We're having rum cake in your honor of at the Yankee-Belle Cafe today.

    ReplyDelete
  36. Ladies, it's NOT about the movies.

    It's all about the pirate.

A bit more trivia, Luvs, pirates have notoriously successful marriages.

    Why?

    They're never home.

    ReplyDelete
  37. I'm loving these quotes!! I think everyone is getting a little punch at this point in speedbo. :)

    ReplyDelete
  38. I love all the quotes, but honestly, I don't remember them all that well.

I liked the first movie and not so much after that. Please don't throw things at me.

I guess I need to get the movie out a watch it again.

    ReplyDelete
  39. Renee, I loved that quote!! That's one of my favorites. :)

    ReplyDelete
  40. Coolest post ever.

    Here's a quote Ruthy loves:

Captain Jack: "This fountain of youth. What does it require?"

    Angelica: "A mermaid, Jack."

    ROF, LOL at that one...

And then this, the old scoundrel...

"Have you not met Will Turner? He's noble, heroic - terrific soprano. Worth at least four... maybe three and a half." (slight hesitation here, mentally measuring poor Will's worth) And did I happen to mention... he's in love?

With a girl. Due to be married. Betrothed. Dividing him from her and her from him would only be half as cruel as actually allowing them to be joined in holy matrimony, eh?"

No respect for the HEA we all seek in blessed wedlock.

"You will always remember this as the day you almost captured Captain Jack Sparrow."

"But why is the rum gone???"

    ReplyDelete
  41. All my favorite quotes have been quoted, though I'm sure there are many many more. Good morning Captain Jack, it's so good to see you here!

    ReplyDelete
  42. Argh, you're breaking me heart.

Not seen The Curse of the Black Pearl?

    Do yerself a favor.

See the movie. Here's a sample for all you, landlubbers.

The Curse of the Black Pearl

    ReplyDelete
  43. There she is! The wench after me own heart. Ruthy, Ruthy, Ruthy.

Remember, Luv. We'll always have Barbados!

    ReplyDelete
  44. Allow me to reiterate.

    It's not about the movie.

    It's all about the pirate.

To know me is to luv me.

Now that I have you here, what will I title me autobiography?

    Yer thoughts?

    ReplyDelete
  45. Welcome Captain Jack!!! I snorted coffee at your pirate trivia!! Alas, if absence makes the heart grow fonder, I think I'll make a shopping trip. :-) I'll wait till after SpeedBo, but come April 1st, I'm giving my man reasib to adore me.

Off for rum cake in the Yankee Belle Cafe. Stop by, Jack!

    Janet

    ReplyDelete
  46. Ah, Janet, the flower of Unpublished Island. Me life has never been the same since you left me.

The Seekers left me. All of them. I can only hope the rest of ye ladies aren't planning to meet with the same fate?

Tell me you aren't leaving the island.

    And.

    ME!

    ReplyDelete
  47. Wow! Captain Jack! What an honor. Quite an enjoyable blog post you wrote. My favorite quote:

Angelica: I am starting to think you don't know where you are going.
Captain Jack Sparrow: Its not the destination so much as the journey.

Spoken like a true man, um, I mean pirate! ;-)

    ReplyDelete
  48. Oh, Jack, you're incorrigible.

I love you. (Don't tell my husband!)

I love that we can always trust you to be yourself, even when playing up your faults:

"Me? I'm dishonest, and a dishonest man you can always trust to be dishonest. Honestly. It's the honest ones you want to watch out for, because you can never predict when they're going to do something incredibly... stupid."

And I love that you dream big:

    "Now, bring me that horizon."

I think that should be the title of your autobiography.

    ReplyDelete
  49. STOP EVERYTHING.

    There! Do you smell it?

Rum balls due north. My heart thanks you. Me stomach as well.

And rum cake due East at the Yanke Belle Cafe

First mate. Turn this ship around.

    ReplyDelete
  50. Bring me that horizon, by the infamous Captain Jack Sparrow.

    I LOVE IT!!

    My heart bursts with gratitude.

I am weeping with writerly joy!

See pirates can weep as well.

    ReplyDelete
  51. So fun to hear from you, Captain Jack. You always have such an interesting outlook on the world. You also have a number of quotes attributed to your name. I don't have time to read everyone's comments right now, so I hope I'm not repeating. :) A couple of my favorites follow.

The first one is between Will and Captain Jack:
Will Turner: This is either madness... or brilliance.

Jack Sparrow: It's remarkable how often those two traits coincide.

The second one kind of tickles my funny bone because I still hear the inflections.
"You seem somewhat familiar. Have I threatened you before?"
Thanks for sharing your unique perspective on pirate life and writing life.
Looking forward to coming back later to read.

    ReplyDelete
  52. And in honor of your visit today, Jack, I have put my "Tropical Island" candle on the warmer today... the scent of island breezes, sand and surf, tropical flowers, and maybe just a hint of rum?

(No offense, but luckily no aroma of your wonderful personage. Elizabeth warned us of your personal hygiene habits.)

    ReplyDelete
  53. Wonderful post! So much sage advice based on experience :-)

One of my favorite quotes (may not be exact ... been a while):

Will: In a fair fight, I'd kill you.
Jack: That's not much incentive for me to fight fair, then, is it?

    Nancy C

  54. "They'll be no living with her after this." A quote as old as the ages around this house. DH took dibs on that one back in 1977, lol. Thanks for the chuckles Capt Jack.

    ReplyDelete
  55. Jack, thanks for visiting us today. I found a fun quote from you but of course, you already know what you've said, this is for the others.

Will Turner: We're going to steal a ship? That ship?
Jack Sparrow: Commandeer. We're going to commandeer that ship. Nautical term.

    ReplyDelete
  56. AHHHH ... the PERFECT blog to usher in the weekend and the PERFECT pirate to do so!!!

LOVE this blog, Captain Jack, and LOVE you because you are just so deliciously unconventional and fun!!

Favorite quote? Blimey, there are SO many faves, but one I love a lot is:

"They'll be no living with her after this."

I guess because it reminds me of my husband ... :)

    Hugs,
    Julie

  58. Ah the saucy Seekerville wenches..and their saucy friends.

I'll have you know the Pirates Code prohibits daily bathing.

Ever though you might be a tad overly clean, ladies?

As a purveyor of fine scents I must admit my favorite is the smell of sea and salt in my face.

Though I am becoming partial to the scent of paper and pen.

    ReplyDelete
  59. That tropical scent is a close third. After rum.

Thank you, Stephanie? Are you actually the Queen? I bow to you, Madame Queen.

Just a moment, I beg your pardon.

There are two Queens. Connie Queen?

What country is Seekerville that there are two monarchs??

    ReplyDelete
  60. fave quote? Now bring me that horizon. ! ;)
and TY for bringing us today's excellent post !! [yes it's worth!!]

    ReplyDelete
  61. Haha, I love it! I would also love to win one of those prizes!

    ReplyDelete
  62. Welcome to Seekerville, Captain Jack. It's wonderful of you to come ashore for us.

We've brought coconut slushies and coconut macaroons for a mid day snack.

It's apparently lunch time on the East Coast so there is Mary Curry's coconut shrimp and a large spinach salad.

No rum. It's not five o'clock anywhere on this hemisphere.

    ReplyDelete
  63. Which reminds me...can't we at least have a hint on those mysterious TREASURES? Gold? Silver? A date with you??

    ReplyDelete
  64. My top two (At least from the first movie) have to be :
Harbormaster: Hold up there, you. It's a shilling to tie up your boat at the dock... and I shall need to know your name.
Jack Sparrow: What do you say to three shillings and we forget the name.
Harbormaster: Welcome to Port Royal, Mr. Smith.

    or

Mullroy: What's your purpose in Port Royal, Mr. Smith?
    Murtogg: Yeah, and no lies.
Jack Sparrow: Well, then, I confess, it is my intention to commandeer one of these ships, pick up a crew in Tortuga, raid, pillage, plunder and otherwise pilfer my weasely black guts out.
    Murtogg: I said no lies.
Mullroy: I think he's telling the truth.
Murtogg: If he were telling the truth, he wouldn't have told us.
Jack Sparrow: Unless, of course, he knew you wouldn't believe the truth even if he told you

    ReplyDelete
  65. I cannot possibly pick a favorite, so I shall pick a random one: "Hide the rum!"

    ReplyDelete
  66. Jack Sparrow: [after Will draws his sword] Put it away, son. It's not worth you getting beat again.

Will Turner: You didn't beat me. You ignored the rules of engagement. In a fair fight, I'd kill you.

Jack Sparrow: That's not much incentive for me to fight fair, then, is it?

    ReplyDelete
  67. A bit of housekeeping, if you don't mind.

I wasn't going to mention it, but alas, I always mention that which I wasn't going to mention.

I took the liberty of a stroll through downtown Seekerville. Dan Walsh? Who is Dan Walsh. He has a reserved guest room. I asked about this situation. Mind you not because he will be here next week, but, it seems to me that my guest room should be larger than his.

    Much larger.

After all my ego is much larger.

Not that I'm complaining about my guest room, nor the hospitality.

I'm just giving ye the facts.

  68. "If we don’t have the key, we can’t open whatever we dont’ have that it unlocks. So what purpose would be served in finding whatever need be unlocked, which we don’t have, without first having found the key what unlocks it?"
    Makes perfect sense to me

    ReplyDelete
  69. I have only watched bit and pieces of the movies. This was lots of fun. It is surprising what you can learn even from a pirate. Here is my favorite quote. " AAArrr". You did say that right Captain Jack?

    ReplyDelete
  70. What a coincidence!
Just yesterday, I bought two decorative pirate muskets to hang on my wall beside Cap'n Jack's framed portrait--I lie not. My room is decorated as a captain's cabin of sorts--rum barrel, humongous Chinese fan, gold & red brocade curtains, etc.

Love your quotes, Cap'n, sir. I have often found them indispensable, especially when I'm writing.

"And me, for example, I can let you drown, but I can't bring this ship into Tortuga all by me onesies, savvy?" -- This fits very well when I'm angry at a character.

"Nobody move! I dropped me brain." -- I feel like saying this often when finding plot errors.

"If you were looking for the opportune moment...that was it." -- very apropos when I've put off writing.

"Well that's even more than less than unhelpful." --looking at scribbled notes I got up in the middle of the night to write.

"Now we're being followed by rocks. Never heard that one before." -- trying to come up with original plot ideas.

"But why? Wh-why would he do that? Well, because he's a lummox, isn't he? Well, we shall have a magnificent garden party and you're not invited!" -- while brainstorming for dialog.

"Shoot him, then cut out his tongue, then shoot his tongue! And trim that scraggly beard." -- arranging the ultimate comeuppance for the bad guy.

    And lastly:
"Gentlemen, I wash my hands of this weirdness." -- My favorite for no particular reason other than the venerable Captain Jack Sparrow said it. :)

P.S. I agree with Carol J. Garvin. Seekerville is AWESOME!

  72. Natalie. Me heart swoons for ye.

You shall be President of the Captain Jack Sparrow Seekerville Fan Club.

Now, can ye fetch me a cold politically correct beverage, lass?

    ReplyDelete
  73. President? Me?
*curtsies* It's honored, I am, Cap'n sir. Mayhap you'd fancy a cold mug of sweet cider? To be honest, I'm not sure how long it's been curing in the cargo hold, savvy? ;)

  75. Now for a round of song!!!

Yo ho, yo ho, a pirate's life for me.
We pillage, we plunder, we rifle, and loot,
Drink up, me 'earties, yo ho.
We kidnap and ravage and don't give a hoot,
Drink up me 'earties, yo ho.

Yo ho, yo ho, a pirate's life for me.
We extort, we pilfer, we filch, and sack,
Drink up, me 'earties, yo ho.
Maraud and embezzle, and even high-jack,
Drink up, me 'earties, yo ho.

Yo ho, yo ho, a pirate's life for me.
We kindle and char, inflame and ignite,
Drink up, me 'earties, yo ho.
We burn up the city, we're really a fright,
Drink up, me 'earties, yo ho.

We're rascals, scoundrels, villans, and knaves,
Drink up, me 'earties, yo ho.
We're devils and black sheep, really bad eggs,
Drink up, me 'earties, yo ho.

Yo ho, yo ho, a pirate's life for me.
We're beggars and blighters, ne'er-do-well cads,
Drink up, me 'earties, yo ho.
Aye, but we're loved by our mommies and dads,
Drink up, me 'earties, yo ho.

  76. Here's a good one!

"My tremendous intuitive sense of the female creature informs me that you are troubled."

I think one of my heroes should use this one! LOL.

Passed the 40,000 word mark in Speedbo yesterday! Yay! Half a book in 4 weeks. Not bad, I must say.

    Cheers,
    Sue

  77. "I think we've all arrived at a very special place. Spiritually, ecumenically, grammatically." (Captain Jack Sparrow)

    Oh, my. Definitely MY favorite!

Everyone, please look away while I swoon. It could prove to be very unqueenly.

    ReplyDelete
  78. I do like this: "I think we've all arrived at a very special place. Spiritually, ecumenically, grammatically." But it's been a while since I've seen any of the movies, and I don't actually remember Captain Jack saying that. LOL!

My kids just got a Wii (from their grandmother) and I'm hoping this means more exercise for us all.

    ReplyDelete
  79. I have to be unoriginal because my personal favorite is also, "There'll be no living with her after this."

My favorite non-Jack quote is, "I'm disinclined to acquiesce to your request. Means no."

Great post! I always love hearing from Captain Jack!

    ReplyDelete
  80. Jack is singing now... Ay he has the rummiest voice he does.

I always like the way you, Jack, take so many words and the long way around in an explanation.

    Example.

The whole picture of key scene.

Jack holds up a picture of a key. To show they have a picture of a key.

Gibbs wonders if they going after the key then. Are they going after what the key fits?

Jack says -- No... if we don't have the key,
we can't open whatever it is that we don't have that it unlocks. So what purpose would be served in finding whatever needs be unlocked, which we don't have without first having found the key what unlocks it.

Gibbs -- so we're going after the key?

Jack -- you're not making any sense at all.

    :-)

  81. Natalie mentioned one of Jack's comments:

"Nobody move! I dropped me brain."

Perfect! Especially for the end...or almost end of SpeedBo!

So glad Captain Jack is here to play with all those who aren't working. :)

    Waving to Jack...

Heading back to my WIP. Only one more day, right?

    YIKES!!!

    ReplyDelete
  82. One more day and it's Davey's Locker for those who quit!

  83. Pirates to the left, Pirates to the right. Here I am. Stuck in the middle with you.

Karaoke begins in five minutes, mates.

    ReplyDelete
  84. Quit? Quit??? You've no sense of the commitment we have to Speedbo, Cap'n. None of us would quit before the stroke of midnight tomorrow.

And as for your autobiography... if you're truly going to put your history down on paper I'm thinking a good title might be, "Captain Jack Sparrow: a man always at sea."

Tina, thanks mightily for macaroons. I thought for a moment rum was the only thing being offered today. I've stolen a handful to sustain me as I head back to my writing cave.

    ReplyDelete
  85. Lmbo. How long did it take one of you Seekers, er, Captain Jack… to write this?

Welcome aboard, Captain! These be shifty waters at times. Hang on to your hat!

I only saw the first one of these movies. But I do like, “Stop blowing holes in my ship!” Poor Jack. : (

Of the Writer’s Code, I am working on these three:

    1. Thou shalt show not tell.
    2.

    5. Don't use adverbs (especially LY adverbs)

    7. Eliminate dialogue tags.

I thought I was already SHOWING, and used dialog tags sparingly. But the comments I got from the GE judges showed me I wasn’t up to par, matey!

What exactly does this one mean…?

    3. No sentence fragments.
    4.

Not even if they’re intentional fragments? Like…

“Jack was found asleep with the rum cuddled to his chest. Again.”

    Savvy?

  86. Carol, unhand the macaroons.

We've roast chicken and oysters for the Speedbo pirates.

  88. I mean this in the nicest possible way, Captain Sparrow..

but The Curse of the Black Pearl was 143 minutes long.

I sincerely hope the autobiography will be a bit...

    SHORTER.

    Julie Luv, you are brilliant!

  93. Once again, late to it all.

My favorite Captain Jack Sparrow quote?

"I think there should be a 'Captain' in there somewhere." (said when someone refers to him without the title).

  96. Mary, I love that quote! It reminds me of CONGRESS....

  97. Jack, so listen up, Dude....

Do you write your own stuff? You know, your dialogue? Or does Disney like hire someone to do it for you?

Because I think your savvy to the self-creation, yo? And we're talkin' serious dubloons, my friend, if you get paid for writing, performing and (next, I'm sure!) directing yourself.

Dan's room is BIGGER than yours? Say it ain't so.

And I thought you usually used Sandra's place whilst on the Mainland???

    So rumor has it.

    ReplyDelete
  98. Capt'n Jack has had some really fun lines to quote. One of my favorites is "It's not the destination so much as the journey, they say." This was said
when he was speaking to Blackbeard and Angelica.

    Fun Post! Thank you!

    Smiles & Blessings,

  99. Ruthy Luv, I stayed at Sandra's until the town was built. Now it's out of courtesy to the wenches that I stay in town. I am after all their adoring Captain..until that scalawag, Walsh came along.

I must hasten to finish my tome so I am prepared to meet him on the literary battle field.

  100. My favorite is, "This is either madness or brilliance."

Who wouldn't want someone to say this after reading their MS? 50/50 chance it's brilliant, good odds!

    ReplyDelete
  101. As awesome as I think Capt. Jack is, I've only seen the third movie straight through. I really need to go and watch the first one. ;-)
Great post, Captain! I love that you write with rum in one hand and pen in the other.

    ReplyDelete
  102. Not familiar with that many Capt. Jack Sparrow quotes (sorry!) so I looked some up...

Here is a quote I love:

"Me? I'm dishonest, and a dishonest man you can always trust to be dishonest. Honestly. It's the honest ones you want to watch out for, because you can never predict when they're going to do something incredibly... stupid."

    LOL! Love it! :)

  104. Just got in from the funeral home (viewing for dear FiL) and needed something cheery to view before heading to bed. What better than Capt. Jack *wink*. Enjoyed your post, and my favorite Capt. Jack quote would be: "Not all treasure is silver and gold, mate." ~ Thanks for all the great advice, Jack!

  105. Great post! So many good quotes have already been mentioned, and maybe mine has too, but at any rate here's one I like:

"If you were waiting for the opportune moment, that was it."

(Doesn't that perfectly suit so many situations in real life?)

By the way, this March Speedbo series has really got me working hard on my WIP. I'm so grateful for the fun & motivating kick in the pants to help me get over my fears and just get to work. Thank you all!

    Here's mine:

"Why is the rum always gone?"

  110. Great post! :) Love it!

My favourite Jack Sparrow. *bows profusely* Sorry, Cap'n Jack Sparrow, ahem quote is:

"Why is the rum always empty? Oh. That's why."

I like to substitute chocolate (or anything else that I shouldn't have too much of..) instead of rum, for eg:

"Why is the chocolate always gone? *insert rustling choc wrappers* Oh, that's why."

I'd love to be entered to win a prize.
    Blessings,

    Lucy
