COURAGE! by Regina Jennings

Happy Speedbo Month!
How’s it going? Are you staying on track? It’s still early in the game and some might be questioning their commitment.

Yeah, I said I’d give it a try. So far, so good, but we’ll see how next week goes.

I’ve already accomplished more than I thought I would. I could quit now, and still be proud.

But did your Mama raise a quitter? I hope not. Instead of calling that sympathetic, kind friend who you can always trust to let you off the hook, we’re going to give you what you really need.

A Shot of Courage.

And who in history administered more doses of courage than Winston Churchill?

I’m sure if he were alive today he’d be right here on Seekerville, telling you to sit your rear in your chair and get busy. You have a book to write. You have a story to share. The world will be blessed by your efforts and bereft if you fail.

And since Winston never quite got the hang of blogging, we’re going to show him the ropes by sharing some of his more pertinent quotes.

“Promises are the blowing of glittering bubbles; performances are the molding and hammering of iron.” – Dundee, May 7, 1908

When people find out you’re an author many of them will tell you that they’ve always thought about writing a book. They have plots, great characters, a sweeping theme. What they don’t have are words on the page. Do your molding and hammering today. You can look at pretty bubbles when you’re finished.

We have not journeyed all this way across the centuries, across the oceans, across the mountains, across the prairies, because we are made of sugar candy.” –Canadian Senate and House of Commons, December 30, 1941

Take a moment to think of all the trials you’ve overcome in your life. Remember the late nights, the physical exhaustion and the mental stress you’ve survived. You are strong. You are determined. You can do this.

“We kept on doing our best, we kept on improving. We profited by our mistakes and our experiences. We turned misfortune to good account.” –Hull, November 7, 1941

Fast writing produces mistakes, but it also provides something to build on. Don’t criticize your work now. No one will see this draft, anyway. Once you’ve reached your goal you’re going to go back and clean it up. And while you’re looking at a rough draft you’ll learn from your mistakes and be able to identify your natural voice.

“Criticism is easy; achievement is more difficult.” –House of Commons, January 22, 1941

Amen! No matter how your final work is received, by the end of this month you've accomplished greatness. Not only have you set a demanding goal, but you've reached it with aplomb. And when someone asks what you've been up to, you’ll smile and say, “Well, I wrote a novel last month. How about you?”

Now stop surfing and start writing!Right after you LEAVE A COMMENT to get your name in the drawing for Love in the Balance.

  1. I'm tedious, methodical, and plodding--but I'm 25% of the way to my goal.

There's coffee brewing for those who drink it, Cokes for me.

  2. Hi Regina! Loved, loved, loved Sixty Acres and a Bride. Thank you for the dose of courage.

Today (still TH in this timezone) I had several episodes where I was watching bubbles. The words weren't coming and the timer was flashing and I had to walk away because a cardinal was singing in the tree outside my window and I needed to watch him!

This process is so interesting - this pouring out your imagination and heart onto the page. Tomorrow I will clear my desktop of all shiny objects and push on!

  3. I brought my own tea, Helen. Easier on my poor stomach. But that coffee smells wonderful and you're a dear to have that pot brewing each night for us.

And I ended up writing tonight after all -- 1039 words! I have 18775 tptal, but I began with 12145. I'm making progress but it's going to need heavy editing. Oops! I'm not supposed to criticize my work now, am I?

I'm off to bed and praying I don't have a repeat of the allergic reaction from last night. So far I haven't had any itching so I'm thinking all the Prilosec is out of my system and the Allegra has handled the itching and hives.

See y'all tomorrow (it's still Thursday in the Central Time Zone).

  4. Thank you for the encouragement and motivation, Regina! I like that:

"And when someone asks what you've been up to, you’ll smile and say, 'Well, I wrote a novel last month. How about you?'"

Hehe, yes! ;) Moving steadily along, although I probably should up my daily word count a bit to stay on target... Hoping to finish this WIP by the end of March! :)

  5. Hi Regina! I'm reading Sixty Acres and a Bride right now. Picked it up yesterday. Just got past the scene where Rosa plays her flute after the storm. One fourth of the way through and I'm already hopelessly in love with Weston. :)

I'd love to be put in the drawing for Love in the Balance.

Great quotes by Winston Churchill! Thanks for the good dose of courage!

The bubbles are so pretty, aren't they? Yesterday was 70 degrees and I hated staying inside, so I can sympathize.

Thanks for the kind words on Sixty Acres!

  12. HI Regina, Courage. What a great topic. Thanks for encouraging us today in Seekerville.

Not only does it take courage to write, but it takes courage to get out there and submit. Whether to a contest, a crit partner or editor, that takes courage big time.

    Have fun today.

    ReplyDelete
  13. Sandra,

Thanks for having me. You're right -submitting is one of the bravest things we can do, isn't it?

    Happy writing!

  14. I absolutely love the glittering bubbles and molding iron quote! Get all sweaty, determined, molding -- and then enjoy the rewards of accomplishment and glittering bubbles.

    I love it!

Great words of wisdom. Get the words down and paper and then do something with them. Time honored method.

Thanks for joining us today, Regina!

  15. Oh, I love you.

    I just do.

I love Churchill, I love history, I love wisdom.

You, my dear girl, have summed up my Get 'Er Done mindset in this post.

    Perfect.

  16. Hi, Regina, and thanks for the encouragement this morning!

I had a couple errands I HAD to run yesterday, so I took the entire day and cleared a bunch of other "have to do's" off the list so I can get back to concentrating on Speedbo. I'm not so far off track that I'll have trouble getting back on.

And I love Winston Churchill - one of my favorite historical figures :)

  17. Welcome to Seekerville, Regina. Loved your post on courage and the right-on quotes from Churchill! You're our cheerleader in Seekerville. I thank you for the push and the lift!

    Your books sound wonderful!

I brought apple fritters this morning to go with Helen's coffee.

  18. This first week of SpeedBo I edited my novella. What started as 25K ended with 38K so I also managed to add 13K. Not bad for just a week's worth of work. As pleased as I am with myself, I'm going to promise myself to keep on writing - I have a novel to get writing and I plan to start that Monday, after just a short break. My wrists need it but my mind is chomping at the bit, eager to get that story down. SpeedBo is working wonderfully for me!

  19. I read Sixty Acres and a Bride - loved it. I would like to read another - sign me up! And, great post - a real kick in the pants but in a nice way. LOL

  20. Audra and Ruth -

I can hardly take credit for Churchill's quotes, but I'm glad they spoke to you this morning. :) Pass the pastries!

Jan - live happens, doesn't it? Way to stay focused and get back to your goal.

Janet - I appreciate Mary Connealy inviting me here. And since I could never do the splits, I'm glad I can play online cheerleader once in awhile.

Christina - Congratulations. Sounds like you're off to a great start.

  21. REGINA!!!!!!!!!!

Those of you who have not read her books, GET THEE TO AMAZON!

    Or your local bookseller. Whichever.

But they RAWK! Both of them! I've already read LITB and I wanted to hate Regina for a while, but then I didn't anymore ;).

Courage. Someone a few comments ago mentioned submitting takes courage. Took all I could muster to send a full request a few weeks ago. *I* don't think it's my best manuscript, but it's what she wanted to see so... /shrug/

And Genesis closes in a week. Definitely some courage involved there. We won't mention how many entries I'm contemplating... ;)

    But right now...

    SpeedBo Day 7:
    Yesterday: 5001
    Total: 30120

I hit my goal for yesterday but it took some toothpicks holding my eyes open after 2 music performances at the elementary school and cranky kids not wanting to go to bed afterwards. In fact, once I hit my goal, I stopped mid sentence ;).

Goal for today is the same. 5K but today is Spring Parties. They don't usually have parties when I can go but I can today. 4 kids. 4 parties. 2 hours. I can go to half of the party for each kiddo.

Before that... word count, baby. My characters are calling my name...

    ReplyDelete
  22. Paula,

Thanks for the kind words on Sixty Acres. And as a homeschooling mom of four, I have lots of pant-kicking practice. Not all of it as cheery as this. ;) Have a great day!

    ReplyDelete
  23. Regina, how did you know I needed this dose of courage? Feeling a little overwhelmed with life right now. This post is a great push toward getting on track with writing goals.

I love Winston Churchill, and all the quotes you shared. And, I loved the idea of being able to write a novel in a month. I've gotta hold onto this. :)

    ReplyDelete
  24. Carol,

If there's an online cheerleader, it's you! I'm so excited about your submissions...and Genesis. You are amazing.

And I told you to hold the hate, didn't I? Where's the trust? You know I'm coming with the HEA. Sheesh! :)

    ReplyDelete
  25. Jeanne,

We all need it frequently, don't we? You aren't alone. You can do it.

    ReplyDelete
  26. Regina, thanks for bringing Churchill to Seekerville. His words of wisdom are timeless.

I especially loved your mention of this quote:
“Criticism is easy; achievement is more difficult.”

That deserves wall space in my office.

COURAGE was my One Word some years ago. My son was heading to Iraq and my manuscript was heading to NYC. Happy endings on both fronts!

I do believe the writing life demands courage...to create, to share, to survive rejection and repeat the process, to sell and then market, and to begin again.

    ReplyDelete
  27. Regina, great post and great quotes!

This is only the second novel I've tried to write, so I feel like a hapless, hopeless newbie who's never going to get the hang of it, so courage is just what I need. Lol

My goal is 1,000 words a day and right now I'm a thousand over my goal. Hey, not a lot, but every little bit counts, right? :)

Thanks again and have a blessed day!

    ReplyDelete
  28. Spirits are up. That's great. I'm running behind on my goal, but still have time to make it up. I've heard you shouldn't worry about research, but I have to do some today so I'll have a better picture for the next scene when things get violent between two warring clans.

Haven't read Regina's books yet but they sound like the kind I'd like to read. Have a good day, all.

    ReplyDelete
  29. I adored Sixty Acres and a Bride and am excited to hear that you have a new book out!

Your words of encouragement are just what I needed this morning. I'm behind on my speedbo goals so was feeling a tad blue. Now I'm raring to go amd -- yay -- I don't have to go back to work until the 18th so I have plenty of catchup time ahead of me!

    ReplyDelete
  30. Hi, Regina! So true--the writing business is NOT for the faint of heart!

Loved the Churchill quotes. In fact, another Winston Churchill quote was the theme of the crossword puzzle I just finished this morning:

"There are a terrible lot of lies going around the world, and the worst of it is half of them are true."

But it's no lie that I am staying ahead of schedule with my Speedbo goals! That gives me hope that I can avoid being sidelined by interruptions that are sure to crop up eventually.

    ReplyDelete
  31. I LOVE Winston and the Brits, especially during World War II. Did anybody see "The King's Speech"? I love the way this quirky little country stood up to Hitler. It makes up for a lot (like the way they treated Ireland, Scotland and India but What Ever). I would love to do a WWII novel some time, but respect the time period too much to rush it.
Please enter me in the drawing.
It is snowing in New Hampshire! Again!

  32. WELCOME REGINA!!!

I liked you as soon as I read this.

"And when someone asks what you've been up to, you’ll smile and say, “Well, I wrote a novel last month. How about you?”"

    She gets it.

Then I read you were an OKIE and I liked you EVEN more!!!

  33. Thanks for the encoraging words and Churchill. It is rather a battle to get writing done, especially if you are among the battle weary wounded.

I was derailed in my word count quest by edits and then I cut a bit of the tip off my middle finger. Then proceeded to smash my index finger same hand. So I typed with eight fingers, but I have been doing handwriting more. if only I stunned a toe, but no I had to get my hands. Amazing how important those fingers are.

    ;-)

Can't much offer a new word count based on my scribbled but I do have several pages.

    Blessings
    Tina

    ReplyDelete
  34. Oh, Tina P! OUCH!!!! Not much hurts worse than a hand injury. Even a teensy paper cut can be so painful!

Good for you for taking up the challenge with pen and paper. Hoping that finger heals quickly!

  35. It doesn't really seem fair...i get to set here and enjoy the post and comments (and coffee, of course, as well as the other goodies) drinking in the bits of wisdom from all of you, and THEN when you are all done and your miracles are polished and shiny, i also get to read them and talk and write about them. You do all the difficult work while i reap the benifits! Thanks to all of you! You Rock! Have as awesome a day as you are! It's threatening to rain here in Phoenix, but am wanting it, too!Praying for you!

  36. Hey, Regina!!! I so love the Winston Churchill quotes. Wow! He was such a great leader in a dark time! How needed was his courage!

I've been following your career, noticing what great success you are having, ever since meeting you at the Books & Such get-together at the ACFW Conference a few years ago. Congrats on the new book!!! You have gotten lots of raves for your first book. :-) You are doing something/things right!

  37. Hi Regina,

Great advice! My progress is hard to track since I'm editing my 112,000 word ms from last year's Speedbo. But I'm working on it every day, so that's the important part.

  52. Debby and Anna - Courage applies in so many areas, doesn't it?

Anna - 1000 words a day is my usual pace. You'll get there.

Elaine - Research can save you from taking a wrong turn, but get those words in, too. :)

Kay - Thanks for remembering Sixty Acres fondly. Hope you have a nice, productive break ahead.

  54. I love the quotes, Regina. Wish we had some modern day Winston Churchills.

Tina Pinson, I feel your pain. I smashed/wrenched the ring finger on my right hand nearly two weeks ago, and the first joint is still so swollen and tender that I'm beginning to think I cracked something in there. Typing hurts.

    But...I was still making progress.

    Until...

Do I have a doozy of an excuse for Speedbo.

The keyboard on my laptop, my only writing computer, is going out! I've lost at least 5 keys already and I have to send it off to be repaired. Waaahhh! The good news is, the computer is less than two years old and I purchased a two-year warranty, so the repairs should be covered. I'll find out for sure in the morning. But I'm pouting. I guess I'll work on the percolating idea for a new story the old fashioned way. Pen and paper.

  55. Myra - Congratulations! Keep on keeping on.

Kathy - Loved The King's Speech. Of course it has Colin Firth, so I'd be partial to it anyway.

  60. always a good post when Churchill is quoted. he's full of great quotes.

my bubbles involve my toddler. i'm finding him distracting me from my SPEEDBO goals. i'm woefully behind on what i originally set as my goals. right now, i'm feeling pretty good if i can manage a few sentences per night before the little man demands some mommy time.

i appreciate this post though. gives me inspiration. i'd love to be in the drawing for your books. i love being introduced to new authors here at Seekerville. they are always top notch reads.
