P.S. RITA & GH calls commence on March 26th!!
Coffee's ready for the weekend.
ReplyDeleteThe Notebook made me cry.
Now I need to go back and read a bunch of those links.
Helen
Oh, yes. The Notebook made me cry too. And The Art of Racing in the Rain-I can't even THINK about that book without tearing up.
ReplyDeleteDitto on The Art of Racing in the Rain. Esp after my Trinket-Pommy girl was poisoned. That is still my go-to book.
ReplyDeleteThe Notebook movie made me BAWL. There's a bunch of songs that do that too.
ReplyDeleteBooks that do...
Hm...
Jody Hedlund's upcoming release Noble Groom did. I think Mary has a few times. Julie a time or two. I know there's lots of others but I'm blanking...
I did win Q Manifesto but I haven't won any of the Speedbo prizes [unless I missed something]. I'm not sure which you meant. I'm up for any and all of them.
I reread an MS this week and half of another one. One is targeted at LI and I thought I was about 2K OVER. I'm NEVER EVER over on my rough drafts. EVER. But then I realized since it was NaNo, I'd put the beginning of book 2 in there too ;). It was 2500 words so I even have some wiggle room :D. YAY!
Off to keep reading the other half...
Um, I know I'm not a crier, but after seeing that list and realizing that I'd read a handful of them and did not cry....I may indeed have a heart of stone.
ReplyDeleteBut I cry at movies, I could list those, so I'm sure I've cried with books, just none that I recall like at movies.... maybe because I'm alone when I cry and I'm trying to hide the tears from the audience at movies??
Scanning my shelves I think I may have with A Voice in the Wind. I literally threw that book, not wanting to read the Bible verse, but then scrambled to pick it back up again praying the Book 2 teaser chapter brought me some hope. :)
And yeah, maybe the Notebook, that was the year I packed up my dorm room (including my books!) and took them home the week before finals. Totally stupid, finals week is so dull for me and I had nothing to read! The Notebook was the sole book my roommate owned, so the Notebook it was. :)
And yeah for me winning! Yeah to the other winners too.
Do dah, Carol, not sure who you are talking to but don't forget, you have a critique from I think LAST month you still need to send in to me.
ReplyDeleteI've cried over three books in my life, if I remember correctly. And two movies. In the order I read/watched them:
ReplyDeletebooks--
Redeeming Love by Francine Rivers
Wind Dancer by Jamie Carie
Love's Pursuit by Siri Mitchell (I was expecting HEA with this one and the ending tore my heart out. Cried for two days.)
movies--
Lion King
Pearl Harbor (Haven't watched Titanic yet, but just bought it, and I expect it will be third on this list.)
Awesome WE, Tina! My browser is filled with tabs from clicking those links at the end of the post! I promise to speed read so I can get back into the MS.
Happy writing everyone!!! :)
I do?
ReplyDeleteI'll have to go find it...
Oh, and P.S. I've won a book this month, but I'd love to be put in the hat for a critique of any kind. Once this story is finished, I'm going to need some feedback.
ReplyDeleteCongrats winners!
Is my crunching bothering anyone?
ReplyDeleteCauliflower and veggie dip. Hmm.
Another excellent WE, Tina! Congrats to all the winners, and I am thrilled to win Mia's book--YAY! ~ Cannot remember which books have made me cry--but certain movies do (am half-asleep right now so brain is fuzzy, LOL). Nite, Patti Jo ~ zzzzzzzzz....
ReplyDeleteHuh. Look at that.
ReplyDeleteI even commented on it ;).
I plead SpeedBo brain.
I will find something I need looked at by eyes more amazing than mine and send it. :D
Thanks for reminding me!
A Walk to Remember by Nicholas Sparks made me cry. The movie also makes me cry.
ReplyDeleteHappy Writing, Seekerville.
Anne's House of Dreams made me cry... And The Yearling...
ReplyDeleteAnd Where the Red Fern Grows
And The Notebook
My young friend Taylor gave me notes for a YA novel last night that she wants me to write. A Utopian society with twists....
I love the way that girl thinks.
Tina, great WE and you said CAT DISH!!!!!
I love that you said it, that you understand the downright simple importance of multiple use society... use it up, wear it out?
Why dirty a bowl or hunt for a hat? Especially in AZ??????
:)
Hey, I'm heading back to work now because I've got me some stuff to do and my coffee is kickin' in!
Back later, peeps! Carol.... you crack me up. I'm laughing, laughing, laughing....
:)
In a good way!
Man O cries at movies. One of the many reasons I love him.
ReplyDeleteI haven't cried buckets when reading for awhile now. Then I read The Fault in Our Stars and cried for three hours as I finished the book. Man O came home to find a woman who was sobbing and had not cooked dinner. He sympathized. Another reason to love the guy.
I am going to have to get Noble Groom. I am hearing too much about it.
Oh, I get to talk to Ruthy who always makes me smile. Unless she makes me cry in her books. Guess I will have to talk to her about that.
Congrats to everyone. Most of all, blessings during Holy Week, the last week of Speedbo. What timing!
Peace, Julie
After we saw The Notebook, all the ladies hurried to the restroom to fix their makeup and pull themselves together.
ReplyDeleteStrangers bonded in the theater restroom over that. Some had parents suffering with Alzheimer's and others didn't. It was a special bonding time with strangers.
Have a great weekend.
Jackie L.
Wow, fabulous links this Weekend, Tina! Thanks! I've got company coming so must wait until tomorrow to check them out.
ReplyDeleteCongrats winners! Waving at Melissa J. :-)
Next week's lineup looks great!
The sun is shining. Have a great weekend everyone!
Janet
Great weekend edition as always. I'm at the 38K mark and hoping to be at the 42K mark by 6 on Sunday night.
ReplyDeleteTwo of Mary's books have made me cry. Petticoat Ranch when the bad guy remembers his salvation and The Husband Tree when the hero realizes the tough little girl tied herself to the saddle in the storm.
OH. MY. GOSH!!! EXCELLENT WE, TEENSTER, TRULY!!
ReplyDeleteI always love to check out a link or two at the bottom of the WEs because you have a knack for really pulling up some great links, but THIS TIME!!
Never have I clicked on so many of the links before -- 8 out of 11, to be exact, so you just stole the last 30 minutes from me, but it was well worth it -- THANK YOU!!
LOVE to cry during books and movies, and the #1 movie I cried through -- the entire last half -- was Nicholas Spark's A Walk to Remember -- TRULY a movie to remember!!
Thanks, Carol, for listing me as one of the authors who makes you cry. Not sure if that's a good thing or a bad thing ... ;)
Hugs,
Julie
Another jam-packed WE, Tina! Where do you find all these gems???
ReplyDeleteAnd Helen, what were you doing up at midnight crunching on veggies???
Books that made me cry . . . Ruthy named my all-time fav, The Yearling. I also wept over Crossing Oceans, by Gina Holmes. Just picked up her two most recent novels when she was in town for a book signing a couple of weekends ago.
Honestly, if my TBR stack gets any higher, it will topple over! Too many great books by Seekers and friends to keep up with!
Do you know how much time I've wasted trying to figure out what 9 DTG Speedbo stands for? LOL. I get it now but I'm sure you have the number wrong. Shouldn't it be 19?
ReplyDeleteJust started reading Mending the Doctor's Heart and am loving it!
Books that made me cry:
Love's Reckoning by Laura Frantz
A love Surrendered by Julie Lessman (because I had to say goodbye to the O'Connors once and for all)
The Reunion by Dan Walsh -- I still get goosebumps thinking about that incredible climatic moment. sniffle.
Lots more, but I should be speedboing instead of wool-gathering!
19? No it's 9 Days To Go. Ha!!!!
ReplyDeleteMelissa, A Voice in the Wind really was a heart-breaker wasn't it? The friend that recommended the series warned me to have the second book ready, so I had a little hope, but she didn't tell me if book 2 would make it better or not. Oh, the suspense. Loved that trilogy.
ReplyDeleteCongrats to all the winners!!!
ReplyDeleteWhere has March gone?
Gotta keep working...gotta keep working...gotta keep working...
Congratulations to this week's winners. The lineup for next week looks great. I'm at 43,000 words in SPEEDBO. That's about 20,000 less than I'd have liked.
ReplyDeleteThe last book I read that made me cry was Catherine's Pursuit by Lena Dooley Nelson when Angus McKenna was finally reunited with his triplet daughters. Don't get me started on movies. The Champ was the worst that I remember.
Congrats winners!
ReplyDeleteI won a survival pack the first week but would love a critique if my name gets drawn from the cat dish. Meow, meow. *grin*
I've had a couple slow writing days because of life. Life happens. I'm going to see Oz the Great and Powerful with a friend and then we're having dinner -- all courtesy of a prize package I won on the local radio station. She and I have kids the same age and lived 5 miles apart for years but never met until we landed in a divorce recovery group together. Now we're fast friends.
I read the Notebook and cried buckets. Then I watched the movie and despite knowing precisely what was going to happen, I still cried buckets. I cry over Hallmark commercials.
We're down to the wire on SpeedBo. *gulp* I think I can. I think I can. I think I can.
Marilyn
P.S. Is that you, Helen? I thought maybe it was the chipmunk who occasionally visits my patio. ;-)
I finished! Made my Speedbo goal as of yesterday! So excited and ready to go onward. The only movie I can think of that made me cry was a real old one "The Champ" when Ricky Schroeder was little. The Notebook and A Walk to Remember also jerk a few tears. Oh what about Rain Man?My favorite book to make me cry is Little Women. Yeah - kind of old fashioned I guess. Sure would like to win that book package or a critique
ReplyDeleteThe Notebook for sure! As for Speedbo....I am way behind but writing when I can. I won't reach my goal this time around but am happy I have more words than I had at the start of Speedbo. Hope everyone has a great weekend!
ReplyDeleteBooks that made me cry: Angela's Ashes, These Is My Words, One Thousand White Women, My Friend Flicka, Old Yeller. I'm intrigued that The Poisonwood Bible and Lonesome Dove are on that list at Galley Cat ... wonder what part made them cry. Hmm.
ReplyDeleteSpeedbo-wise I am nowhere near where I planned to be. Sigh. There's one more week, and I will be farther along by then. Persistence. Persistence.
Congrats to the winners. And belated congrats to all who shared such good news this week -- truly inspiring.
So many good links, Tina! Thank you.
Oh, and do enter me for either the first chapter critique or the first 5 pages critique, pretty please? Seekerville opinions are always helpful :-)
Nancy C
Congratulations to all you Speedbo winners from last week and commenters who won. Found the links Tina listed useful, especially one about how to make things worse for your character.
ReplyDeleteOff the top of my head, Tamera Alexander's novel Rekindled was a tearjerker. The film The Notebook mentioned is one.
Blessings to everyone during Holy Week. Hope everyone in Speedbo reaches their goal.
Little Women, when Beth dies, and Ol' Yeller. Does it every time. Oh, and Because of Winn-Dixie.
ReplyDeleteCongrats to those who met or are exceeding their goals.
ReplyDeleteTo the rest of us...
Rollin' Rollin' Rollin' Keep that Speedbo Rollin'
How could I forget??? I won Ruthy's book last week ... take my name out of the cat bowl :-)
ReplyDeleteNancy C
Little Women, another lifelong favorite! Thanks for the reminder, Cindy & Melanie!
ReplyDeleteStill on track with my Speedbo goal. Also working on edits for my fall release. Amazingly, that book can still make me cry--and I'm NOT talking about the edits!
Great WE!!!
ReplyDeleteBut the burning question is...Does the YankeeBelle Cafe DELIVER?????
Just today I finished The Kitchen House and boo hoo'd. My daughter made fun of me--like usual. She said (like usual), "It's just a book."
ReplyDeleteShe just doesn't get it!
Natalie, I cry at the Lion King, too. Just with the music! When I sent to see the play in New York, I burst into tears as soon as the music started (have actually done that both times I've seen it!)
ReplyDeleteGreat WE!
ReplyDeleteCongratulations winners!
I don't know where this week went :)
Crying... Oh, yes I do that and try to avoid books and movies that leave me in tears. I need a HEA or at least something optimistic in the end :)
Hi Tina:
ReplyDeleteIt’s not sadness that makes me cry. It’s happiness or, if truth be told, jealousy.
I almost cried, but caught myself in time, during the last scene of, “Pride and Prejudice”, when at the end of twenty or so hours of BBC production, Darcy (Colin Firth) kisses Elizabeth (Jennifer Ehle) in the carriage after departing from their wedding.
This scene made me think of a line in Julius Caesar, act II, when Mark Anthony asks the crowd while standing over Caesar’s body, “Here was a Caesar! when comes such another?”
And the crowd shouts, “Never! Never!”
I wanted to ask, “Here was an Austen, when comes such another?”
I could just hear the crowd shouting, “Never! Never!”
Jane! You set the bar too high! And that makes me want to cry.
Vince
Vince! Spoken like a true literary romantic.
ReplyDeletePam -- I love that idea. Yankee Belle Cafe delivery! Yes!
ReplyDeleteCindy -- Major congrats on meeting your Speedbo goal. Since you have nothing to do now, would you be interested in working as a delivery person for the Yankee Belle Cafe? ;-)
Nancy C
LOL, Nancy.
ReplyDeleteYou and me Cindy. Driving the delivery truck. I want shotgun.
So sorry to get here so late. :) Congratulations to the winners!
ReplyDeleteIt's been one of THOSE days. I loved the WE, Tina. And I'll request that my name to be put in the hat. I haven't won anything this month. (I guess I'm not to shy to beg :)). I'm working on an entry for a contest that is due next weekend. That's been my focus this week. And I think I'll try entering it in the Oregon Christian Writers contest that you had in last weekend's WE. :)
Let's see, I will confess to being a bit of a sap. Books that have made me cry: Anne of Green Gables, Little Women, and recently, "You Don't Know Me," by Susan May Warren. For movies, The Blind Side, Remember the Titans, Return to Me. There are others, but I'll stop there. :)
Have a good evening and weekend, All!
I'm w/Melissa.
ReplyDeleteI'm not a crier. I've never read a book that made me cry. But...I was very sad over the Notebook. And it was a great movie. Love James Garner.
As far as I can remember, I've never cried during a movie. I know, I know, I just don't. But one movie that I have to swallow back tears...Housesitter. Stupid, but when Steve Martin gripes out Goldie Hawn and asks why she made up having parents. She says, "I just wanted to know what it would be like to be part of a family." Or something like that...Ah, it just gets to me.
Sometimes people tell me I'm weird.
Love that Vince, I've choked down a few emotional displays when I was in the presence of brilliance......
ReplyDeleteBut I totally forgot when I'm pregnant, I can get emotional over the stupidest things. Last time, I was watching this youtube video of the best cheerleading troop in Japan I think and cried. I watched it again and cried, I was just so danged proud of these strangers! And then I had to show my husband what had actually made me cry--and I cried again laughing at myself the whole entire time.
I do have to say that I never used to cry, not even at movies, until I had kids. Life and death just seem more gut-wrenching now, I suppose.
Okay, so I stayed up WAAAY to late to write through to the end. It's rough. It's the first draft, but it's finished!!!!
ReplyDeleteCrossed the 50K mark AND wrote over 6K in one day--a personal record.
Thank you, Lord, for the words. Thank you Seekerville, for the support and encouragement and wonderful writing knowledge. And thank you, Speedbo, for being so darn fun! :) (Why do I feel like I'm at the Oscars? Is it the writer's high? "I'd like to thank the academy..." lol)
Now I can start those lovely edits.
Happy Speedbo-ing, everyone! Keep going! You can do it!
NATALIE!!!! OH, that's awesome, my friend, that's wonderful!!!!
ReplyDeleteI love Speedbo, too. I love giving myself permission to WORK and not apologize.... Like Lucy and her Psychiatrist booth in "Peanuts"...
"The Writer is IN!!!"
Elaine, I think you've done marvelously! And I love that I get to send out a slew of books next week....
And that Easter is around the corner....
And I just love Holy Week. Just love the warmth, beauty and sanctity of this time. We are blessed and we count our blessings more during this holy week of remembrance.
Sun is rising here.... LOVE IT! My Christmas book is complete, accepted, and the epilogue was completed today. And now must start Kirkwood Lake IV....
Vince, I love that scene, too. But you know what I like even more? Is when they make amends on their walk, and he admits that hearing his "aunts" tale of what Elizabeth said let him hope because she'd have had no problem dissing him to his aunt when she'd already proven she'd do it to his face....
I wonder what this new mini-series will be like, visiting them in their future?
I'm half afraid they're going to RUIN EVERYTHING by trying to improve on a perfect ending.
Dolts.
The book that always makes me cry is
ReplyDeleteA Lantern in Her Hand by Bess Streeter Aldrich. Something about that book just touches me every time and often, as we go through Abby Deal's life, a DIFFERENT part of her life touches my heart. The last time I read it I cried SO HARD that I'm afraid to read it again.
CONNIE QUEEN The Notebook just made me CRY SO HARD! My husband left the room just before the big MOMENT and he comes back and I'm just sobbing and he says, "WHAT HAPPENED?" But it was impossible to explain!
ReplyDeleteI'm not much of a crier honestly. But Little House on the Prairie, the TV show could do it.
ReplyDeleteI think I'm a sucker for Self-Sacrifice. When a character sacrifices their own chance at happiness to care for the people they love.
I'd really like to be in the pot for the 20 page critique :)
ReplyDeleteNatalie Monk!!! Congratulations!!
ReplyDeleteThis comment has been removed by the author.
ReplyDeleteOoops, I mean 'same difference'. And I'm not expecting anyone to respond to these comments... Looks like we're talking about what makes us cry.
ReplyDeleteUHhhh. Thinking... thinking... The last book that made me sob was 'Chime' by Franny Billingsley.
Congrats, winners! (And Natalie Monk!)
ReplyDeletePlease drop my name in the cat dish for any of the critiques.
If there's a sad part in a movie or book, I will usually cry at it. Or at least, my eyes will "well up". (To make myself feel better, I've convinced myself that it's not crying unless tears actually fall. Lol) I'm just too darn tender-hearted sometimes!
Hi all!
ReplyDeleteThe Notebook totally made me cry. My grandma had Alzheimer's and the hubs bought it for me one Christmas without realizing the full story. He vowed to never by me another book after seeing me sit in a puddle sobbing! lol! I have to admit, I haven't been very good at writing lately. I got in a nice little kick of it a week ago and then haven't made it back. I'm 19000 words in though, so almost half way!! I'd love to be entered in for one of the fab prizes.
Have a great week!
Thanks to all for celebrating with me! God bless you for your sweet words! There's no place like Seekerville. :)
ReplyDeleteVince, I love that Pride and Prejudice scene, too!
I'd have to say my current favorite scene from that production is in the drawing room with Georgiana playing the piano, and Darcy only has eyes for Elizabeth. At that point he's either so in love with her that he doesn't know he shows it, or he loves her so much he's not ashamed of it. :)
Ruthy! There is a new mini-series about P&P???? I've got to find out deets on this! I love anything Austen.
Anna Weaver, I totally agree! It's not official crying if the tears are still in your eyes. lol. It should definitely be a rule. :) P.S. I read the blurb on amazon for your book, "That's How We Roll," and it brought back memories of my family when we traveled for 6 yrs with my evangelist dad and sang in revival meetings. Good times. Now I MUST read your story!
Ugh all this talk about P&P makes me want to go watch it, but the kiss scene feels stilted to me...I watch it for what Natalie mentioned--the watching Lizzy at the piano turning pages and the awkwardness as they walk around Pemberly with the uncle and aunt and as he tells her goodbye in the carriage...I'm a sucker for the "I'm in love but I can't say anything!" Which you'll catch if you read my books....at least I hope.
ReplyDeleteThat's awesome, Natalie! I'm sure there are several stories you can relate to, then. :) We are so blessed to be able to travel and make wonderful memories together. And it's so nice to meet another believer in the welling rule. Lol
ReplyDeleteOooh super WE, Tina! And...I won :D
ReplyDeleteYaaaaaay. Also cried at the end of Because of Winn-Dixie - and probably a bunch of others. I'm a cryer (LOL I cried at the end of DIE HARD! :::roll::: ). Am almost to 16k for Speedbo - not where I wanted to be, but I'm good :)
Hey, did my other comment get deleted?? Too funny!
ReplyDeleteCensorship!
I can try again... The self-pubbing article from Salon is whacked. I sold 1200 copies in one day and never got close to the top 100 paid. And after two months I'm van shopping. So, his story just doesn't add up, sorry.
I sent that link to a friend who
hit #14 on the paid kindle lists and hit the NYT list the same day. So, his numbers are... off. Even if his publishing company gives him 35%, we're talking a lot more money than that.
And without a traditional publisher, you get 70% of the royalties. End stop. :)
Oh, I should also say, Amazon pays much sooner than a traditional publisher. My payments come at least 60days after signing a contract, and then it's only a portion. Amazon pays 60 days after the money is accrued. And then every month after.
ReplyDeleteIt's always been that way for me, not sure why it's being reported as a 'new change'.
Sarah's Key made me cry.
ReplyDeleteThanks for the great articles, Tina!
It's not a book, of course, but Downton Abbey made me cry this season.
Virginia, I asked about that. The change is for authors PUBLISHED with the imprints of Amazon, such as Montlake Romance. Not digital self publishing through Amazon.

It says YOU deleted it fast fingers. When we delete it, it says deleted by admin.
No, if we delete it right, it VANISHES FOREVER with no trace.
ReplyDeleteThat's censorship at it's finest!
I read the SALON article, too. I didn't quite get it. He kept referring to some trouble he go in with Jack Daniels Whiskey or something? A cease and desist order. I almost wished I'd cared enough to look into that. But I suspect the guy is into self-promotion in rabble rousing ways.
Oh, I did delete one because I'd mentioned the wrong article (way to win points for persuasion and all that).
ReplyDeleteBut there was another. One that mentioned MARY and TINA and RUTHY.
No, I lie.
Anyway, as for the Jack Daniels bit, the guy had a cover that used the JD graphic and they sent him a lovely cease and desist letter. It said, 'we know everyone loves ys and we're so flattered BUT we need to protect the image from any confusions, so could you pretty please, if it's not too much trouble, take it down?'
It was actually a very funny letter and got a lot of press as a way to use lawyers in a NICE way that keeps your brand clean and your customers happy.
And oh... imprints of Amazon? Weird. So much I don't know. I just downloaded some random thoughts and slapped a cover on it and called it good.
So you publish your own books on Kindle and sell on Amazon...but Amazon has its own imprints.
ReplyDeleteList of Amazon Publishing Imprints
LOL. Mary. True, very true.
ReplyDeleteI'm delighted and confused by this convo and must study Mary Virginia's brilliance at LENGTH....
ReplyDeleteThere are a few Ruthy treasures which may need handling thus!
I'm not buying into the whole "delete" thing, though.... I've deleted Connealy HUNDREDS OF TIMES and she keeps coming back. She's a cat.
Sigh.
Ruthy, you have a gatekeeper.
ReplyDeleteAnd I do not. :)
*Cheshire grin*
