I did win Q Manifesto but I haven't won any of the Speedbo prizes [unless I missed something]. I'm not sure which you meant. I'm up for any and all of them.
I reread an MS this week and half of another one. One is targeted at LI and I thought I was about 2K OVER. I'm NEVER EVER over on my rough drafts. EVER. But then I realized since it was NaNo, I'd put the beginning of book 2 in there too ;). It was 2500 words so I even have some wiggle room :D. YAY!
Off to keep reading the other half...
Um, I know I'm not a crier, but after seeing that list and realizing that I'd read a handful of them and did not cry....I may indeed have a heart of stone.
ReplyDeleteBut I cry at movies, I could list those, so I'm sure I've cried with books, just none that I recall like at movies.... maybe because I'm alone when I cry and I'm trying to hide the tears from the audience at movies??
Scanning my shelves I think I may have with A Voice in the Wind. I literally threw that book, not wanting to read the Bible verse, but then scrambled to pick it back up again praying the Book 2 teaser chapter brought me some hope. :)
And yeah, maybe the Notebook, that was the year I packed up my dorm room (including my books!) and took them home the week before finals. Totally stupid, finals week is so dull for me and I had nothing to read! The Notebook was the sole book my roommate owned, so the Notebook it was. :)
And yeah for me winning! Yeah to the other winners too.

Man O cries at movies. One of the many reasons I love him.
ReplyDeleteI haven't cried buckets when reading for awhile now. Then I read The Fault in Our Stars and cried for three hours as I finished the book. Man O came home to find a woman who was sobbing and had not cooked dinner. He sympathized. Another reason to love the guy.
I am going to have to get Noble Groom. I am hearing too much about it.
Oh, I get to talk to Ruthy who always makes me smile. Unless she makes me cry in her books. Guess I will have to talk to her about that.
Congrats to everyone. Most of all, blessings during Holy Week, the last week of Speedbo. What timing!

After we saw The Notebook, all the ladies hurried to the restroom to fix their makeup and pull themselves together.
ReplyDeleteStrangers bonded in the theater restroom over that. Some had parents suffering with Alzheimer's and others didn't. It was a special bonding time with strangers.

Books that made me cry . . . Ruthy named my all-time fav, The Yearling. I also wept over Crossing Oceans, by Gina Holmes. Just picked up her two most recent novels when she was in town for a book signing a couple of weekends ago.
Honestly, if my TBR stack gets any higher, it will topple over! Too many great books by Seekers and friends to keep up with!

ReplyDeleteThe last book I read that made me cry was Catherine's Pursuit by Lena Dooley Nelson when Angus McKenna was finally reunited with his triplet daughters. Don't get me started on movies. The Champ was the worst that I remember.

I've had a couple slow writing days because of life. Life happens. I'm going to see Oz the Great and Powerful with a friend and then we're having dinner -- all courtesy of a prize package I won on the local radio station. She and I have kids the same age and lived 5 miles apart for years but never met until we landed in a divorce recovery group together. Now we're fast friends.
I read the Notebook and cried buckets. Then I watched the movie and despite knowing precisely what was going to happen, I still cried buckets. I cry over Hallmark commercials.
We're down to the wire on SpeedBo. *gulp* I think I can. I think I can. I think I can.

I finished! Made my Speedbo goal as of yesterday! So excited and ready to go onward. The only movie I can think of that made me cry was a real old one "The Champ" when Ricky Schroeder was little. The Notebook and A Walk to Remember also jerk a few tears. Oh what about Rain Man?My favorite book to make me cry is Little Women. Yeah - kind of old fashioned I guess. ReplyDeleteIt’s not sadness that makes me cry. It’s happiness or, if truth be told, jealousy.
I almost cried, but caught myself in time, during the last scene of, “Pride and Prejudice”, when at the end of twenty or so hours of BBC production, Darcy (Colin Firth) kisses Elizabeth (Jennifer Ehle) in the carriage after departing from their wedding.
This scene made me think of a line in Julius Caesar, act II, when Mark Anthony asks the crowd while standing over Caesar’s body, “Here was a Caesar! when comes such another?”
And the crowd shouts, “Never! Never!”
I wanted to ask, “Here was an Austen, when comes such another?”
I could just hear the crowd shouting, “Never! Never!”

As far as I can remember, I've never cried during a movie. I know, I know, I just don't. But one movie that I have to swallow back tears...Housesitter. Stupid,but when Steve Martin gripes out Goldie Hawn and asks why she made up having parents. She says, "I just wanted to know what it would be like to be part of a family." Or something like that...Ah, it just gets to me.
Sometimes people tell me I'm weird.

ReplyDeleteBut I totally forgot when I'm pregnant, I can get emotional over the stupidest things. Last time, I was watching this youtube video of the best cheerleading troop in Japan I think and cried. I watched it again and cried, I was just so danged proud of these strangers! And then I had to show my husband what had actually made me cry--and I cried again laughing at myself the whole entire time.
I do have to say that I never used to cry, not even at movies, until I had kids. Life and death just seem more gut-wrenching now, I suppose.
Okay, so I stayed up WAAAY to late to write through to the end. It's rough. It's the first draft, but it's finished!!!!

Vince, I love that scene, too. But you know what I like even more? Is when they make amends on their walk, and he admits that hearing his "aunts" tale of what Elizabeth said let him hope because she'd have had no problem dissing him to his aunt when she'd already proven she'd do it to his face....
I wonder what this new mini-series will be like, visiting them in their future?
I'm half afraid they're going to RUIN EVERYTHING by trying to improve on a perfect ending.

ReplyDeleteA Lantern in Her Hand by Bess Streeter Aldrich. Something about that book just touches me every time and often, as we go through Abby Deal's life, a DIFFERENT part of her life touches my heart. The last time I read it I cried SO HARD that I'm afraid to read it again.
CONNIE QUEEN The Notebook just made me CRY SO HARD! My husband left the room just before the big MOMENT and he comes back and I'm just sobbing and he says, "WHAT HAPPENED?" But it was impossible to explain!

If there's a sad part in a movie or book, I will usually cry at it. Or at least, my eyes will "well up". (To make myself feel better, I've convinced myself that it's not crying unless tears actually fall. Lol) I'm just too darn tender-hearted sometimes!

ReplyDeleteThe Notebook totally made me cry. My grandma had Alzheimer's and the hubs bought it for me one Christmas without realizing the full story. He vowed to never by me another book after seeing me sit in a puddle sobbing! lol! I have to admit, I haven't been very good at writing lately. I got in a nice little kick of it a week ago and then haven't made it back. I'm 19000 words in though, so almost half way!! I'd love to be entered in for one of the fab prizes.

I'd have to say my current favorite scene from that production is in the drawing room with Georgiana playing the piano, and Darcy only has eyes for Elizabeth. At that point he's either so in love with her that he doesn't know he shows it, or he loves her so much he's not ashamed of it. :)

I read the blurb on amazon for your book, "That's How We Roll," and it brought back memories of my family when we traveled for 6 yrs with my evangelist dad and sang in revival meetings. Good times. Now I MUST read your story!
Ugh all this talk about P&P makes me want to go watch it, but the kiss scene feels stilted to me...I watch it for what Natalie mentioned--the watching Lizzy at the piano turning pages and the awkwardness as they walk around Pemberly with the uncle and aunt and as he tells her goodbye in the carriage...I'm a sucker for the "I'm in love but I can't say anything!" Which you'll catch if you read my books....at least I hope.

I can try again... The self-pubbing article from Salon is whacked. I sold 1200 copies in one day and never got close to the top 100 paid. And after two months I'm van shopping. So, his story just doesn't add up, sorry.
I sent that link to a friend who
hit #14 on the paid kindle lists and hit the NYT list the same day. So, his numbers are... off. Even if his publishing company gives him 35%, we're talking a lot more money than that.
And without a traditional publisher, you get 70% of the royalties. End stop. :)
Oh, I should also say, Amazon pays much sooner than a traditional publisher. My payments come at least 60days after signing a contract, and then it's only a portion. Amazon pays 60 days after the money is accrued. And then every month after.

Virginia, I asked about that. The change is for authors PUBLISHED with the imprints of Amazon, such as Montlake Romance. Not digital self publishing through Amazon.

I read the SALON article, too. I didn't quite get it. He kept referring to some trouble he go in with Jack Daniels Whiskey or something? A cease and desist order. I almost wished I'd cared enough to look into that. But I suspect the guy is into self-promotion in rabble rousing ways.
Oh, I did delete one because I'd mentioned the wrong article (way to win points for persuasion and all that).

Anyway, as for the Jack Daniels bit, the guy had a cover that used the JD graphic and they sent him a lovely cease and desist letter. It said, 'we know everyone loves ys and we're so flattered BUT we need to protect the image from any confusions, so could you pretty please, if it's not too much trouble, take it down?'
It was actually a very funny letter and got a lot of press as a way to use lawyers in a NICE way that keeps your brand clean and your customers happy.
And oh... imprints of Amazon? Weird. So much I don't know. I just downloaded some random thoughts and slapped a cover on it and called it good.
So you publish your own books on Kindle and sell on Amazon...but Amazon has its own imprints.
