Devotions for the Writer

Sandra here and I am so excited to be here in Atlanta, Georgia for the RWA National Conference. I brought a huge pot of chocolate velvet coffee, some Georgian iced tea (sweet like you Southerners like it) and some iced coffee.  Patti Jo volunteered to make some yummy peach cobbler and I have added a platter of summer fruit.

Later this afternoon we will bring out the boxes of Sees Candy I brought from the West.

The best part of being at RWA is seeing my Seeker sisters that have come to the conference:   Mary Connealy, Janet Dean, Myra Johnson, Debby Giusti, and Missy Tippens.  We met a little early so we could put on the final touches for our workshop tomorrow.

Sandra, Janet, Myra, Debby, Mary and Missy in Atlanta

Yes, that's right.  We are giving a workshop entitled THE BLOG THAT HELPED US SAIL OFF UNPUBBED ISLAND.  Can you guess what that workshop is about?  LOL  We are going to talk about Seekerville and how focusing on contests and the craft of writing not only helped us get off unpubbed island, but has helped so many of our Seeker friends also. So if you are here at the conference get up early tomorrow. Our workshop is from 8:30-9:30 am in workshop room A 704. We plan to gather after the workshop and have fellowship and coffee.

Today I've pasted in a 28 day devotional for writers.  I wrote these years ago and took them to the ACFW conference as free handouts in Denver.  Some of you may recognize them.  But during the afternoon, scroll down as I will add photos and info from our first day at the conference.

TWENTY EIGHT DAY DEVOTIONAL FOR THE WRITER
Written by and compliments of

Daily Prayer:  I pray that I will lead a godly, exemplary life and that I will have boldness to express my convictions about Jesus Christ in my writing.

Day 1
A scribe approached and said to him, “Teacher I will follow you wherever you go.” (Matthew 8:10)
Many people want to follow Jesus, but it is not an easy road. Writing about Jesus requires sacrifices.  What do you have to give up in order to write? Today, make a list of all the things you own that you really don’t need.

Day 2
He said to them, “Why are you terrified, O you of little faith?” (Matthew 8:26)
Have you ever been afraid or terrified?  Are you afraid to express your deep and innermost feelings?  Are you afraid of critiques and opinions of others? Are you afraid to submit your writing?  Are you afraid of rejection? When you are afraid, do you call on Jesus? Today, make a list of all the things that frighten you about writing.

Day 3
For when I am weak, then I am strong. (2 Corinthians 12:10b)
When you are at your weakest is when you are the strongest because you turn to Jesus. Sometimes you don’t turn to Jesus when you think you can do it yourself.  However, turning problems or challenges over to the Lord gives you strength to overcome. Today, tuck the list you made yesterday into your Bible.  Give your fears to Jesus to take care of.

Day 4
“Without cost you have received; without cost you are to give.” (Matthew 10:8b)
God has given you gifts.  You have talents and skills unique to you.  God gave them to you freely. You are to use those gifts freely.  He gave them to you so you could bless others. Today, write down all of the gifts God has given to you.  Have you used them freely?

Day 5
“Do not worry about how you are to speak or what you are to say.  You will be given at that moment what you are to say.  For it will not be you who speak, but the Spirit of your Father speaking through you.”  (Matthew 10:19b-20)
What Jesus told His disciples applies to you.  Today, close your eyes and ask the Holy Spirit to help you tell others about Jesus.  Thank Him and tell Him you love Him.

Day 6
In Him we were also chosen, destined in accord with the purpose of the One who accomplishes all things according to the intention of his will so that we might exist for the praise of his glory. (Ephesians 1:11-12a)
God chose you to be His child.  The reason you exist and were chosen is so you could praise God.  That is the main reason you exist—to love God. Today, tell God how much you love Him.  Sing a song of praise to Him.

Day 7
Jesus said to them, “Come to the desert and rest awhile.” (Mark 6:31a)
In Genesis, you read that after God created the earth, He rested on the seventh day.  Jesus is telling His disciples to take some time to rest.  If God and Jesus need time to rest, then so do you. Today, take some time to rest in a quiet place.  Spend that time thinking about Jesus.

Day 8
“Come to me all you who labor and are burdened, and I will give you rest.” (Matthew 11:28)
This is one of the most popular sayings of Jesus.  If you can’t think of what to write, or if challenges interfere with your writing, He says come to ME.  Today, say the name Jesus seven times.  How does saying His name make you feel?

Day 9
And he spoke to them at length in parables. (Matthew 13:3a)
When Jesus spoke to the crowds and to His disciples, He often used parables or stories.  The Holy Spirit helps you to understand the stories.  Today, pray and ask the Holy Spirit to help you write about the love of Jesus.

Day 10
For all of you are children of the light. (1 Thessalonians 5:5a)
You must let your light shine and tell the world about Jesus.  As a writer, you have the perfect opportunity. Today, go in a dark room and turn on the light.  You can see everything more clearly.  Life is more clear when you know Jesus.  Thank Him and start writing.

Day 11
“I must proclaim the good news of the kingdom of God, because for this purpose I have been sent.”  (Luke 4:43b)
Jesus was sent by God to tell about God’s kingdom.  You were chosen for a purpose also.  Love God with all your heart and you will discover that purpose. Today, tell someone about Jesus and how much you love God.

Day 12
As you received Christ Jesus the Lord, walk in him, rooted in him and built upon him and established in the faith as you were taught, abounding in thanksgiving. (Colossians 2:6-7)
Jesus wants you to read His word in the Bible and pray to Him every day.  When you do this, you will become more and more like Jesus. Today, thank Jesus for helping you be like Him.

Day 13
First of all, I ask that supplications, prayers, petitions, and thanksgivings be offered for everyone, for kings and for all in authority, that we may lead a quiet and tranquil life in all devotion and dignity. (1 Timothy: 2:1-2)
Jesus wants us to pray for all leaders.  As writers, we need to pray for the leaders in our profession so that publishing will prosper and grow and reach out to more readers. Today, find out the names of the leaders in our industry.  List the names of publishers, editors and book sellers.  Pray for them.

Day 14
Blessed are you in the firmament of heaven, praiseworthy and glorious forever. (Daniel 3:56)
God loves when His people sing to Him and tell Him how much they love Him. Do you sing to the Lord? Today, praise God.  You can do this by singing a song, writing a poem, shouting out loud or clapping your hands.

Day 15
Jesus said to his disciples: “A good tree does not bear rotten fruit, nor does a rotten tree bear good fruit.  For every tree is known by its own fruit.” (Luke 6:43-44a)
You are a writer.  Your fruits are the words you produce.  That is how people know if you truly love Jesus. Today, thank Jesus for helping you be like Him.  Thank Him for helping you write words about His love.

Day 16
“But as for the seed that fell on rich soil, they are the ones who, when they have heard the word, embrace it with a generous and good heart, and bear fruit through perseverance.” (Luke 8:15)
It is one thing to embrace the word with a generous heart, but it is another to persevere and bear that fruit.  As Christian writers, we must persevere and not let anything block us from bearing our fruit. Today, make a list of all the things that prevent you from writing.  Tuck that list in the Bible and ask God to help you overcome so that you can bear His fruit.
Day 17
You ask but do not receive, because you ask wrongly, to spend it on your passions. (James 4:3)
James is telling you to be careful when you ask God for anything, that you are asking out of love and compassion, out of caring and concern for others.  Sometimes you don’t get what you ask for because your motives were not pure.  You might have been asking out of selfish reasons or because you are envious of others. Today, write down all the things you want to ask God for this week.  Beside each item, write down the reason you are asking.  Check to see if the reasons are pure and not selfish.

Day 18
Jesus said to the crowd, “Take care to guard against all greed, for though one may be rich, one’s life does not consist of possessions.” (Luke 12:15)
In the writing profession, fame is a temptation.  Jesus does not want you to be greedy. What we have here on earth is not what is important.  If you have more than you need, then He wants you to share with others.  This will give you treasures in heaven.
Today, share some wisdom about writing with another writer.

Day 19
Jesus said to his disciples: “The person who is trustworthy in very small matters is also trustworthy in great ones.” (Luke 16:10a)
You may not have time to write much every day, but are you writing faithfully?  If you cannot finish one book, will you be trusted for many?  It isn’t the hours you put in, but the consistency that make a successful author. Today, establish goals and set a schedule.  Pray to be faithful to both.

Day 20
“For human beings it is impossible, but not for God.  All things are possible for God.” (Mark 10:27)
After reading industry news or hearing a speaker, we think that getting published is impossible.  Maybe you’ve received a rejection this week.  But you can pray because nothing is too difficult for God. Today, think of something you need to make your writing successful.  Ask God to take care of it for you.

Day 21
I will give thanks to you, O Lord, with all my heart; I will declare your wondrous deeds. (Psalm 9:1)
When someone does something special for you, it is right to thank them.  What has God done for you recently?  Have you thanked Him? Today, make a list of all God’s blessings this past week and thank Him.

Day 22
I am not ashamed of the Gospel.  It is the power of God for the salvation of everyone who believes. (Romans 1:16a)
Are there times when you are embarrassed to say you write inspirational romance?  Has someone put you down for doing so or maybe suggested you write something else?  Paul was not ashamed.  He knew how important it is to read about Jesus. Today, tell someone you write inspirational romance.

Day 23
Jesus said to his disciples.  “I tell you, everyone who acknowledges me before others, the Son of Man will acknowledge before the angels of God.” (Luke 12:8)
If you write about Jesus, Jesus will tell His friends, the angels of God, about you. Today, write about Jesus.

Day 24
“Blessed are those servants whom the master finds vigilant on his arrival.” (Luke 12:37a)
You don’t know when Jesus will come, so be ready at all times as if He were coming today.  Will He find you writing or making some excuse not to? Today, look at your writing schedule.  What do you need to do to make it ready for a visit from Jesus?

Day 25
“Much will be required of the person entrusted with much.” (Luke 12:48b)
Jesus says one who has been asked to take care of a big job, will be required to do so.  He expects the job to be done and He is pleased when the job is done well. You have been given the gift of writing.  He expects you to master your craft and be professional.  It is a big responsibility to represent Him in the written word. Today, read an article, listen to a tape or read a chapter from a professional book that will improve your writing skill.

Day 26
Rejoice in hope, endure in affliction, and persevere in prayer. (Romans 12:12)
Rejoice in the hope that what you are writing is true and will be published. Endure past the negative critiques and the rejections.  Persevere and write, write, write. These are important ways to stay close to your work with Jesus.
Today, find a way to rejoice or be happy with your work in progress.  Laugh and smile and tell someone how happy you are.

Day 27
“I tell you ask and you will receive; seek and you will find; knock and the door will be opened for you.” (Luke 11:9)
Jesus is telling you that He will send the Holy Spirit and together they will help you write about the love of Jesus. Today, write down all the things you want the Holy Spirit to help you with in your writing.

Day 28
The Lord has done great things for us; Oh how happy we are. (Psalm 126:3)
Whenever God does something good for His people, they sing and shout and praise Him.  Do you do that in your church?  Does your family sing and shout thanks to God?  Do you? Today, sing a song of praise to God.  Sing a song you know or make up one.

  5. Can't wait to see you all!!!!! I only get up that early for the most special of people. I will have jetlag (coming from North Carolina ;-)) but I will be there.

Um, Tina, let's not talk storms and Atlanta. At least not until my plane has landed.

    peace, Julie

    ReplyDelete
  6. How can you have jet lag? Your flight must be like seven minutes long. No beverages. They just throw a water bottle at you.

    ReplyDelete
  7. Tina, it's "the getting up early and catching the jet lag."

Sandra, I am going to be refreshing this page on my phone all week long and reminding myself that God is with us as we pitch, make connections, and, yes, have fun.

I keep an eye at conferences for those God incidents that remind me I am not in control.

    Peace, Julie

  8. Julie hate to know what it would be like if you flew to australia.

  9. HI CHRISTINA, Thank you. I am sure we will have fun. The trick will be to stop having fun and get to work. smile

  10. TINA, It is my first time to Georgia. What I have seen so far is gorgeous. it is so lushy green and hilly with lots of trees. I guess I was picturing flat ground with cotton fields.

    ReplyDelete
  11. JENNY, You would know what it would be like to fly that long. smile We are so glad you came.

    ReplyDelete
  12. Thanks CINDY, Already I've talked more in four hours than I do in four days. chuckle

  16. Good morning, Seekerville.
*waves* to my roomie, Julie. I'm in the airport.

Sandra, this was the perfect post to begin my trip.

My own morning devotion included this:

"Where do I sense hope, encouragement, and growth areas in my life? By looking back over the last few months, I may be able to see which activities and occasions have produced rich fruit. If I do notice such areas, I will determine to give those areas both time and space in the future."

That seemed like a good way to begin this trip.

Looking forward to seemingly Seeker friends.

I am so stinkin' surprised by that, my friend!

I'm writing about Brussel Sprouts here.

I'm pretending that's as much fun as being with Seekervillagers in Atlanta.

Don't anyone say it ain't so.

    ReplyDelete
  37. Hi GLYNNA, Yes we miss you terribly. We miss all the Seekers who are not here. And the villagers. Thanks for stopping by virtually though. Hugs

  47. I just noticed the books on the elevator. Yesterday I ordered Mia's and Sandra's!

Great covers on all of them.

    ReplyDelete
  48. Hi TINA, You are so right. The people have been outstanding. The good ole Southern hospitality you hear about is really true.

    ReplyDelete
  49. Hi SUSAN, Its okay to read them all at once and then do them daily. I often read devotions over and over and each time I read them I get something else out of them. Isn't that amazing? Its like when you read the Bible. I guess you have different needs at different times.

    ReplyDelete
  50. Oh PATTY JO did I write the wrong name? Where? I'll go change it. I'm such a dunce and when I get to talking or something. sigh.

No PATTY JO's cobbler is what we are talking about here.

And thanks for the great welcome. I love it here. Its really pretty. Breathtaking actually.

    ReplyDelete
  51. Hi NANCY, Thanks for sharing that info. You can't imagine how great that makes us feel to think our sharing helps not only us but others. Its a God thing.

    ReplyDelete
  52. Oh nice. Thanks SUSAN. Will we see you here also? yippee

    ReplyDelete
  53. Hi PATTI JO, I fixed it. So sorry. You are the best.

    ReplyDelete
  54. Getting ready to leave for the conference. Wish everyone could be there! Hugs to all who will be manning the blog while some of us are gone.

Waving to all those arriving in the A-T-L today! See you soon.

    ReplyDelete
  55. BTW, I've been reflecting recently about God's perfect timing. It keeps coming to me over and over again.

    His timing is perfect! Amen.

    ReplyDelete
  56. Oh, yes...PATTI Jo! I thought that didn't sound right, but I hadn't had Sandra's chocolate velvet coffee yet! Back for more coffee and PATTI JO's cobbler. Thanks and enjoy Atlanta!

  57. Thank you, Sandy, I love this. Will make me focus better.

  59. It isn’t the hours you put in, but the consistency that make a successful author -

    Amen.

Hope you have a blast in Atlanta. Would LOVE to be there. Ya'll be good.

Trying to write while walking on my treadmill. Don't think I could ever out exercise all I eat, but it's better than nothing.

    ReplyDelete
  60. Hi CONNIE QUEEN, "Y'all be good." You must be from the South also. smile Loving it. Thanks. And we will try to be good but may not make it.

    ReplyDelete
  61. Good in a fun sort of way.

    From Texas...

  62. I just realized something... because I'm not at RWA I won't get a first sale ribbon, and because I haven't registered for ACFW yet (still waiting on God to move) I won't get a first sale ribbon there either. I think I'll have to make a t-shirt or something that says 1st book sale. *g*

    ReplyDelete
  63. Debby, you are awesome! I have to keep reminding myself that His timing is perfect even if I don't think so.

    ReplyDelete
  64. Hi Sandra:

I’ve been to Atlanta many times and don’t let all that greenery fool you. In a few days you’ll be homesick for the big empty.

If you haven’t tried it, order some genuine cornbread that’s at least three inches high and covered in melted butter. The south understands cornbread. I don’t think anyone in Oklahoma does.

I’ve an idea for your workshop: 'How to find your own unpublished island’. To get off the island, you have to be on the island. There is no sense waiting for your ship to come in if you haven’t sent one out. BTW: I hear Captain Jack is in Atlanta.

I read all your daily devotionals late last night. I think devotionals are addictive but I’d like to see three more. You don’t want to leave us spiritually naked for two or three days a month, do you?

I’m a devotional junkie. For over thirty years my mother and I read the Unity Daily Word and whenever we’d speak on the phone one or the other of us would quiz the other on what the topic was for that day. It’s a wonderful memory and it makes not reading the Daily Word an impossibility.

Please let us know ASAP how the workshop went and also others you attend. We may need to know which workshop audios to order.

    Vince

P.S. Do you know how you can tell the Pantsers at a workshop? They don’t want you to ‘spoil’ the class by letting them know which workshop it is until after it’s over.

P.P.S. If you see Sarah Palin wondering around, please let her know it’s not the Republican Women Authors conference.

  65. VInce, you're a hoot!

Christina, I'll make you a first sale ribbon....

But ribbon, shmibbon, honey, it all comes down to someone PAYING US TO DO WHAT WE LOVE!!!!

    :)

Yes, that is my capitalistic, pay-the-bills side coming out.

I'll take a paycheck over a ribbon anyday...

I've got the sewing machine out.

Had fun this morning with Mary & Janet seeing the Cyclorama. Really interesting! No, it is not a motorcycle race.

  67. Love the devotionals, the picture of the Seekers that are there, AND the elevator door ads. Is that cool, or what???

  68. CHRISTINA, Congrats. You are first with us. smile

  70. Reading these comments I AM CONSUMED BY JEALOUSY!!!!

    *deep breath*

Two things I do when I feel jealous:

I pray blessings will cover each and every one of you stinking partiers-- Ooops. I mean, every one of you writers! Praying for the fulfillment of all your hopes and dreams, and the wisdom to make wonderful choices.

ALSO- I work. So, turning all this jealousy into some hard work this week. Plowing through projects. Writing in commitments on the calendar.

All boats rise together. I'll be raising the tide on my side of the country.

    Have a wonderful time!

  71. VINCE I agree with CHRISTINA. You are toooooooo funny.

I promise to try the cornbread.

I read Daily Word with my mom and my grandma. I'm with you. I still read it. And about ten others. I'm glad you like those. I did twenty eight days to be four weeks even. I'll try and get to the three extra.

  72. I love all these pictures! SWEET!!!!

Happy dancing to see all of you having fun....

We are doing face painting here.

And the teens are doing make up to honor the memory of Talia Castellano, the beautiful young lady on Youtube who did great Tween and Teen tutorials on make-up for girls. She passed away from cancer at 11:22 yesterday and my teens here have shared Talia's videos with me.

Heaven has another (very lovely) member who totally rocks the bald look...

    Bald is beautiful.

  73. "P.S. Do you know how you can tell the Pantsers at a workshop? They don’t want you to ‘spoil’ the class by letting them know which workshop it is until after it’s over."

LOL, Vince! That is so unfair!!

And I'm hearing noises about changes in the RITAS.

Wishing Missy all the best (Go, MISSY!!!) and wondering what announcements will come for the years 2014 and on...

  74. P.S. Isn't Piper up for something big??

V, I'm there with you. Praying blessings, and have been. I think the biggest thing I'll miss is the awards ceremony.

I'm with you Ruthy, I'll take the dollar over the blue any day! :-) Although I have to admit, it's fun getting a blue ribbon.

  86. TINA, that was funny 'they throw a water bottle at you!" Haha.
Many years ago, in a far-away-land, air travel was exciting and fun——we even dressed up! Does anyone else remember that??

  89. Hi JULIE, We miss you. You would love this. So fun. Really nice worship time at the FHL meeting. Read the devotional responsive reading Francine Rivers wrote for FHL several years ago.

  90. MARY, MARY I DO remember that. Not any more. LOL

Someday you'll be here. Happy writing

    ReplyDelete
  91. Dressing up for air travel...I remember seeing that on TV!!!!

    Mary Curry Congratulations!!!!

And to Robin Lee and Rachel and Tamera...

    Lovely to see those results!

    Vince, Vince, Vince....

    Darling...

Don't be a hater, Vince... come to the dark side of emoting a book.... Throw the blueprints out the window and free-form that novel!!!!

    :)

Now if my builder did that with my family room, I might not be a fan, but in writing.... I have a pantsers heart in a short, rounded body.

    Clearly God's intent, right????

    :)

  96. JENNY its thundering and lightning and absolutely pouring outside. The hotel has a glass dome in the atrium which is the level of all our activities and you can hear the thunder and see the rain and lightning. It is sooo cool.

  97. Well not cool as in cold but cool as in spectacular

  98. Hi NANCY, More pictures coming. I just attended the literacy signing. It is sooooooo crowded but rather exciting.

  99. Those of you here at RWA we plan to gather at the Pulse Loft on the Atrium floor after our workshop Thursday. I know the workshop is early, but you can join us after the workshop at the Pulse Loft.

This is so much fun. We have met so many Seeker friends.

  100. The Love Inspired authors are off to a Harlequin event tonight. I think Heartsong goes also. Won't that be fun?

My Montlake event is tomorrow night. I'm looking forward to meeting other Montlake authors.

Don't forget to order LOVE"S MIRACLES tomorrow on Kindle. Its free tomorrow the 18th. Tell your friends. Also remember it is a psychological drama. It is faith based, but not CBA. There is some violence due to war.

  101. So fun to see the RWA13 pictures!THANK YOU, SANDRA!!! Now hope you can get some rest! Busy days ahead.

  102. Hi Ruth:

I don’t ‘hate’ pantsers. They write too many good books. In fact, probably the best writers are pantsers. It’s just that the price of pantserism is so high. Pantsers are like pistol shooters who refuse to use the gun sights. They shoot by feel. Annie Oakley could do this and she was the best ever. So it’s great if you can do it.

Here’s a secret to writing comedy direct from Mark Twain. To make people laugh first make them uncomfortable . They will then be much more likely to laugh as a way to relieve their uneasiness. The pantser/plotter shtick has the tension built-in.

QUESTION: “How can you tell the plotters that are in your workshop?” They are ready to teach the class if a teacher does not show up.

OBSERVATION: Seekerville has now reached a critical mass. Enough talent and inspiration has been accumulated so that each week someone new has a debut novel or has just signed at book contract. Seekerville has become the bomb!!!

  103. Vince, you know it's just a saying, don't you????

"Don't be a hater." My kids say it all the time, but it's a lighthearted thing when they're making fun of each other.

Which is most of the time.

You know, I see some of the great classics took years to write, and then you see a James Michener (whom I love) and those are pre-planned, and I do pre-plan some.... but most of it is mental pre-planning.

So kudos to a good memory, right??? :)

Hey, I love RUTH II!!! I saw her picture on facebook. I'm beautiful!!!!!!

  104. Thanks for posting all those pics, Sandra. I would have loved to be there. I hope Kelly used her best Aussie accent to read out my speech. Now, I can imagine how it all looked. :)

    ReplyDelete
  105. I'm sorry I didn't get by today! Sandra thank you for sharing the devotions and the photos!

Wish you could all be here.

Now, I must get my beauty sleep for the early a.m. workshop! :)

  106. Congrats to Dorothy on winning the Touched by Love Competition.

    I love all the photos.

Sandra we had thunder and lightening here in the early hours no power for about 3 and a half. (but it was around 1am so not a major issue)

  107. HI DOROTHY, She tried, but admitted she wasn't good at it. We all clapped anyway. Congratulations.

  110. Hi Ruth:

No I didn’t know kids were saying “Don’t be a hater”. My off time is spent with 90 year olds! (My wife’s parents.) My only contact with kids is when I’m reading your posts on Facebook. You don’t know how thankful I am to take vicarious part in their growing up.

BTW: people might wonder about you and your ‘Ruth’ comment. Ruth is a wave petunia that I often feature on my Facebook page. Ruth has grown from a five inch pot and four flowers to over a yard wide and probably 100 flowers in just over 30 days. Absolutely amazing. It was purchased on Ruth’s, our Ruth’s, recommendation.
