ReplyDeleteGot the coffee pot set.
And won another book. How great!
Helen
Okay:
ReplyDeleteI did it.
Shared on Facebook. That's two of us in the first few minutes of this post.
However what I'd like to know is what in the world does a rock star know about pitching books? Many rock stars are as dumb as rocks.
I think I could pitch a book better than that right now.
How about:
"How to pitch a book better than a seven figure agent?"
Now I'd stand in line for that!
Scrivener workshop tomorrow in Tulsa at the WIN ACFW chapter. Scrivener can give Pantsers many of the advantages of being a plotter without the disadvantages.
Oh, that's for later this month in my Pantser/Plotter post.
Congrats to all the winners! Even me! It's always a thrill to win something at Seekers -- I hope it always will be.
Vince
Sometimes you scare me Vince. I thought I put the wrong link in. Not Rock Star. Upon the Rock.
ReplyDeleteOh, lucky you, Scrivener workshop.
There is one coming up in September online. Must sign up.
Shared on both Twitter and Facebook.
ReplyDeleteI'm so excited for this next week.
Way to go, Tina!!!!! I have two articles partially written for WW. Too scared to send them since I was rejected once. ;) Actually, I've been working over time on four different projects while I wait for word from my editor. I'm feeling very energetic and accomplished.
Congratulations, Julie!
Wish I was going to RWA this year, but I'm shooting for San Antonio next year.
You were only rejected by WW once? Well you haven't subbed enough then. Get those puppies out there.
ReplyDeleteI sent mine on Twitter! Great WE again Tina! Thanks for all of the great links and information. Congrats to the winners!
ReplyDeleteMonday is a big day, but Mary's day will be very helpful as well. Looking forward to it!
Piper
I shared on FB, have no idea what book I'd choose if I won, but hey!
ReplyDeleteFor some reason, I couldn't get the ACFW journal to work for me this time, and well, if it takes too much effort, I have too many things to do and considering I don't like reading magazines on line, makes me sad they did away with the print. Though it saves me some time, so maybe it's a good thing? Magazines are good read while you eat your wheaties type reading.
I shared on Facebook.
ReplyDeleteHope all are having a wonderful holiday weekend.
Blessings,
Cindy W.

I didn't share on facebook or twitter because I don't have an account with either. I know, I know. I'm such a dinosaur. :-) But I'd share if I could.
ReplyDeleteCongratulations Tina!!!!!! I've tried and tried and tried to write a short story for WW but I just can't do the short word count. I bow down to your talent!
And congrats to Julie! How cool is that???
And look at all the Seekerville books coming up in the next few months. Makes me almost want to wish my summer away! And not just because I'm pining for cooler temps.
Oh -- and I'm a winner again!!!! This summer is off to a very good start. Thank you!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Congratulations on your 8th sale to Woman's World, TINA!! That's hard, very competitive national territory to break into, let alone EIGHT times!!!
ReplyDeleteAnd CONGRATS on another contest win, JULIE! You're on a streak!
I am so like you Melissa, I grow very impatient with online magazines. And the beauty of a magazine is the ability to stick them in my purse for the doctor's office or hiding them in the rest room. Online defeats that.
ReplyDeleteCongratulations to Mary, Tina, Julie and all winners! I tweeted and Facebooked. Great week ahead! Thanks for the WE! Happy weekend to all! I'm enjoying grandbabies this weekend!!!
ReplyDeleteI'm so happy I won Hallee Bridgeman's book!
ReplyDeleteI'd love to enter the Writers Digest contest, but I've never written a short story. Come to think of it, I never read short stories...
Everyone have a great weekend.
Shared on Facebook.
ReplyDeleteLooks like next week is full of awesome posts.
Congratulations to all of the winners.
Another great WE TINA. I shared on all of them. So fun to finally know how. LOL
ReplyDeleteCongrats JULIE. Another deserved win.
Congrats to all the other winners.
SHERIDA have fun with the grandbabies.
Those of you coming to RWA, please come to our workshop. We're going to have a get together of Seeker buddies afterward. Look in next weeks WE for time and place.
ReplyDeleteThanks for another great Weekend Edition, Tina. Congratulations, winners! Looks like a great lineup next week.
ReplyDeleteI'm especially excited about Emily Rodmell's visit Monday! Who could know more about pitching than an editor? You never know what great things could come from having her in Seekerville.
I'm tickled to see Grammar Queen is gracing us with her presence Tuesday. Her post is a mouthful. Can't you just hear her saying Removing Repetitious Redundancies?
Have a lovely weekend all!
Janet
Huge congratulations, Tina, on your 8th sale to Womens World!!! That's awesome!!! Remind us closer to the date so we can pick up a copy. WW is chockful of fun tidbits and wisdom.
ReplyDeleteJanet
Good morning. I tweeted this.
ReplyDeleteI also followed the link to sexual tension. That's got to make you smile.
Have a great weekend.
I'm hoping to see some Villagers at the Literacy signing in Atlanta!
ReplyDeleteAnd at Thursday morning's Workshop entitled, The Blog that Helped Us Sail off Unpubbed Island. The workshop is early 8:30. Grab a cup of java and come, please.
Janet
Wow Tina, eight WW stories sold!
ReplyDeleteI sent them 2 or 3 about a year ago. I need to try again.
I tweeted and fb. :)
I'm going to go tip toe through those links!
Have a great weekend everybody!
Removing Repetitious Redundancies
ReplyDeleteYeah, let's all say that three times.
How to Publish in "Woman’s World" From Someone Who Has Been Rejected Six Times…all Form Letters!
ReplyDeleteI’ve studied WW fiction for over 52 issues. Analyzed every story, counted the words, even took note of the warm fuzzes, locations, tone, seasons, tags, nature of the situations, and many more features that I would study to make an advertising client happy.
Here’s some of the things I’ve learned that might help you.
1. Have a typical event situation.
2. Write tight. Amazingly tight.
3. Come in under the word count they allow.*
4. Hit the right WW tone. Not too serious. Something that could very well happen to the readers of the magazine.
5. Keep the story in America…suburban, small town is best.
6. Have about six to eight warm fuzzes in the article. These grab your heart and make you feel something for the characters. This requires extreme creativity in your selection of scenes and events.
7. The story must end with the reader feeling good. Not an HEA but a ALHFN. That’s "At least Happy for Now”.
8. Have the story end with a twist the reader did not expect. It’s really good if the reader is actually expecting one ending and you give her something else.(Something even better.)
9. Try to have your story set in the season that is coming up in a few months. Like a Thanksgiving story submitted today. It is good to tie in the story to a season, event, or holiday. WW really likes this.
10. When it is over the reader should feel good and think these people are just like her and her neighbors and the story could well have happened next door. The story should not seem unusual or seem like great writing.
These WW stories seem so easy to write when you read them but so hard when you try to do all things that the published stories accomplish.
One last thing: Be lucky. I’ve read on the blogs that WW gets 2000 entries a week. I would venture to say that at least 200 of them are well written, wonderful, and fully publishable pieces.
Given all this, I think you can begin to understand what a monumental accomplishment Tina has achieved! To do this one time is like winning the lottery.
Tina is the Nora Roberts of Woman’s World!
Vince
*So many stories were well under the word limit (a hundred plus words less than the limit) that I wrote the editor to ask if the actual word count was less than the published guidelines but she affirmed the higher word count was still in effect. Perhaps they like room to cut the story to make it even tighter. This writing is as tight as the best copywriting where you are paying a $100 a word to run the ad in a national publication.
Great week ahead. Thanks for the update, Tina!
ReplyDeleteAnother WW sale!!! Way to go, Tina!!! You're amazing...which I have mentioned before.
Please, please, please stop by tomorrow and learn what editors want in a pitch. Love Inspired Editor Emily Rodmell is providing lots of tips...AND she's inviting folks to share a short blurb about their stories in the comments. So get your elevator pitches ready for Emily!
Hahaha.Vince my first sub to WW was 1988. My first sale 1999.
ReplyDeleteThe key is persistence. I am a persistent little brat.
My latest sale, I changed up my usual bait and switch and did a simple HEAFN.
Thank you for the kind words.
Vince,
ReplyDeleteConcerning the term Rock Star. Think figuratively and not literally.
Rock Star...a pro, a celeb, a master in a certain discipline, someone who knows the ins and outs of a certain domain...
Sending Seekerville hugs from Georgia!
In my defense for not understanding Vince's first comment of the day, it was five am and I was without coffee.
ReplyDeletePitch like a rock star...Emily Rodmell's post. Duh on me.
How About How To Pitch Without Pain and Suffering.
Vince, you're right about WW being a very tough sell. I tried my hand at the romances. Got a few scribbled notes from the editor along with my rejections, but no sale.
ReplyDeleteI did, however, publish a slice-of-life, humorous piece with them and a mystery story.
My hat's off to Tina. Always! in my book, she's a Rock Star!!! :)
Facebooked and Twittered :).
ReplyDeleteHoping for a Panera day today but dunno if it's gonna happen. Need oodles of words this week and don't see it happening any other way but...
Vince, you're a rock star! I've noticed a few of the same things about WW. I think I just may finish up at least one. It's sitting at 532 words.
ReplyDeleteYou should charge for your analysis. ;) I need a good eye, someone tell actually tell me what I'm doing wrong besides 'not quite ready'. LOL
Vince, I printed your WW tips. Thank you for doing the work and sharing it with us!
ReplyDeleteChristina, if you go under the blog labels, in the right hand column there are several articles on writing for WW.
ReplyDeleteOkay I put the articles in the blog post for your convenience.
ReplyDeleteFirst one to sell to WW buys lunch on the island.
You can do it, Carol!!! Oodles of words. Oodles of words. I need 3 pages today.
ReplyDeleteMust go ...write.
Great WE, Tina! Thanks!!
ReplyDeleteI hope you'll all also stop by the Harlequin book signing at conference! I'll be signing books there as well. It's Friday 9:45-11:15. :)
Yay, Tina!! Congrats on another WW story!!
ReplyDeleteYes! Congrats Tina!!! That's awesome!!
ReplyDeleteI've thought about trying for WW but haven't bitten that particular bullet yet.
I *did* make it to Panera and successfully stalk my table [didn't take long for them to get the "you must mooooove" vibes I was sending out].
Now, to /gasp/ plot some so I know where these words need to go...
Mea Culpa, Missy. I put it in last week's WE ED. and forgot it this week. Just added. Sorry!!!
ReplyDeleteHi Debby:
ReplyDeleteDid I mention that I’ve been rejected three times by the WW mystery editor? And those stories were really great. I was already counting my money. : )
One story involved the fact that England did not go on the same Daylight Savings time when the US expanded the dates. So the albi tape of a phone call made to London with Big Ben chiming 8 o’clock in the background actually proved the killer did have the extra hour he needed to do the crime. I guess it was too clever. Like my jokes.
I must add here that the mystery editor has a much nicer rejection letter.
BTW: I read that about a rock star and I could just see myself asking a stoned out Mick Jagger to help me with a pitch for “Stranded in a Cabin with a Romance Writer”. He’d probably tell me his only experience was with prime minister’s wives.
Oh, my, Scriveners in just a few more minutes. Got to go.
Vince
P.S. And thanks for always taking me seriously. You are way too nice…in a good way, that is.
Yay for all the great news--especially for our own Tina and Julie! You go, girls!!!
ReplyDeleteWhat fun to see Seekers and Seekervillagers at RWA in a couple of weeks! I haven't been to RWA since Orlando.
Vince the mystery editor is the same as the romance editor. Johnene Granger.
ReplyDeleteThanks, Tina. I'll check those out now.
ReplyDeleteAfter I cry a little for missing conference this week. ;) I so wish I was there, but next year. Next year and hopefully, just maybe I'll be signing. *g*
It's not until the week of the 15th.
ReplyDeleteRWA that is.
*smack* I knew that. :)
ReplyDeleteWow, RWA is that soon? Goodness, the year is just GONE!
ReplyDeleteGO PAM. GO WASH YOUR MOUTH OUT WITH SOAP. RIGHT NOW.
ReplyDeleteTHE SAME EDITOR!
ReplyDeleteThat’s great!
That’s like getting a second opinion from the same doctor.
There is still hope.
I think I’ll just have to keep trying.
BTW: They just extended the 8th Annual Dixie Kane Memorial Contest Deadline to July 31! I was in it last year and they are wonderful people. Entry Fee: just $15. Enter the first 5 double spaced pages of your manuscript and a one page single spaced synopsis.
This is very doable! It's prime ‘toe in the water’ stuff.
Vince
Go for it, Vince. You and Nick the coordinator should be best buddies. He's a professor. Two cerebrals in a pod.
ReplyDeleteShared on Facebook.
ReplyDeleteCongratulations to all winners and to Julie on the award. Great news on your WW acceptance,Tina. Such an impressive record with them. I'm working on one and waiting to hear back on another. Keep subbing to WW, Christine. You never know. Our persistence may pay off. I hope so anyway.
Appreciate the work that goes into the WE.
Pleasant weekend to everyone.
Happy weekend everybody.
ReplyDeleteI was all excited for this four day weekend and then.......turns out I ain't got four days of fun in me. Mostly napped.
LOL. Mary. Getting old cowgirl.
ReplyDeleteWhat a colorful WE! Definitely an eye catcher, Tina!
ReplyDeleteCongrats to the winners from last week and get prepared for this week. A pitch session with Emily Rodmell. That's such a generous offer. Make the most of it!!
Congrats on the sale to WW, Tina. They love you. I know the competition is tough, but hey, they DO obviously like you!
ReplyDeleteAnd Julie! I love that cover and I loved the book! They chose wisely : )
Vince, enjoy the Scrivener workshop. Luck bucket! I'd take a workshop like that in a heartbeat.
ReplyDeleteHave fun!
And Seeker ladies on the panel at RWA...have a great time. I know that's one workshop I'll be ordering!
ReplyDeleteProductive day at Panera led to this conversation with my daughter:
ReplyDeleteMaggie: how'd you do today?
Me: about 7000 words
Maggie: but you were editing too?
Me: nooo, I was plotting. The book was done but only about 55 thousand words and I need it to be about 85 or 90 thousand. So I added a couple of people and figured out where I could put stuff in.
Maggie: you should do like your friend. Shoot someone. Bang, bang, pow. Two chapters.
Me: uncontrollable laughter
Yes. At 11 years old, she has the Mary Connealy plan for overcoming writer's block down.
OMG that is hilarious. And she understands editing!!!! Local chapter prez of the MC Fan Club.
ReplyDeleteMoncado, that's a hoot!!!!
ReplyDeleteTina, great WE! I got kind of kicked out of my house for most of yesterday, so me and a kid went shopping and playing while her parents tiled a doorway for me.
So I missed SATURDAY FUN IN SEEKERVILLE!!!!
Congrats to all of our winners, and huge kudos to the gals giving sessions at RWA!!!! How wonderful that will be!
I've got Sunday morning coffee here for youse! And flavored creamers. So happy to be here!
Kav, wrapping an enticing story up in 800 words isn't easy, is it?
ReplyDeleteTina's amazing. (I'm buttering her up, clearly, but that's not unusual!!!)
Thanks for the shares, everyone! I've seen a few of them. SUHWEET!
VINCE! what a great run down. And you contacted the editor, oh you moxy-man you!!! I love that you are totally focused on going the distance. You rock.
LIKE A ROCK STAR!!!! :)
Smiling at Vince...
ReplyDeleteDo I take you seriously? :)
Of course I do!
When are we going to see you at a conference? ACFW this fall? Next year? Desert Rose...or whatever the SW conference is called?
Christina, having you sign next year is something to anticipate with excitment!
ReplyDeleteMore rain in Georgia.
ReplyDeleteWe're soggy and dreary. What happened to summer?
Hopefully the sun will shine when all the Romance Rock Stars descend on ATL.
Right, Vince?
I get a kick out of looking at our stats.

Waving to all our international Villagers!!!
ReplyDeleteIntroduce yourselves so we can get to know you and spread the Seekerville community even farther.
Thanks for the 'fall lineup' of Seeker books. Must read faster. Must read faster.
ReplyDeleteCongrats to the winners -- and special congrats to Tina. Eight short stories, wow!
The 'happy ending' link was interesting, as was the one about sexual tension, but I especially appreciated the one about why a Facebook page doesn't take the place of an author's website. As someone who doesn't use Facebook (I know, I know) when I want to know more about an author, what other books s/he has written, etc., I look for a website.
Gotta go read comments now.
Nancy C
Just got home tonight from a weekend at our lovely coast, but had no internet so I'm super late chiming in!
ReplyDeleteCONGRATS to all the winners (and I am THRILLED to win a Yankee Candle gift certificate - - WOOHOO!!!!). LOVE those candles. :)
Tina, cannot wait to read your story in WW - - Congrats on selling another one!
Hugs, Patti Jo
p.s. A big CONGRATS to Julie L. too - - YAY!!! :)
ReplyDeleteA BIG thanks to everyone who left congrats on my contest win!!
ReplyDeleteAnd a BIG CONGRATS to all the winners and to Tina for her WW sale!!
Sorry I'm so late to the party, Teenster, I was out of town and out of sync all weekend!!
And frankly, STILL not in sync ... :|
Hugs,
Julie
I can relate to the not in sync part. LOL.
ReplyDelete
