Seeker Myra Johnson went a little crazy Tuesday with her post, "Blatant Self Promotion: When the Clouds Roll By," book one of her historical romance series from Abingdon Press! We took a behind-the-scenes glimpse of some of her research and found out who she pictures as her central characters. The two winners of When the Clouds Roll By are Ruth Ann Dell (Kindle version) and Mary Hicks, winner of an autographed print copy.
Wednesday Seeker Debby Giusti was our hostess with her post "Tiny "Bytes" from ACFW 2013." Winner of Debby's latest Love Inspired Suspense, The Soldier's Sister, is Suzie Johnson.

ReplyDeleteI think that site just isn't a great place for authors to connect with readers. Definitely a good place to give away books or to find reads or to connect with groups of like0minded readers... but it's not a place to be socially active as an author.
And that's such a switch from what everybody was saying only 6 months ago.

Woohooooo -- isn't that amazing???? It is to me because lately they haven't been so current on getting new books in.

CAROL ... you mean there's a chance you would DOUBT something I say??? I was SO ticked off at Joanne after I finished book 2 that I not only took a sleep aid, but I had to wait two weeks before I contacted her because I needed to cool the emotions down. TALK ABOUT AN EMOTIONAL reading experience -- I am no longer the Queen of prompting readers to throw one's book against a wall, something of which I'm accused quite frequently due to roller-coaster emotions in my books!!!

My daughter and I picked out ten of them but I told her I didn't want to be greedy so we left them on a corner to pick up if they were still there. Back at my table less than five minutes I watched a woman walk off with the whole kit and kabootal.

P.S. What do you think about having one of your characters, who comes from or has just been to Tulsa, mention that Steve’s has closed and how sad the city is. That would be a nice piece of realism. Paradise would never be the same without its Steve’s.
P.P.S. I had one of Carol’s cookies in Tulsa in 2011, and like muscle memory; my taste buds can recreate the experience. It’s a real ‘show’ not 'tell' delight. Wonderful!

ReplyDeleteI just checked-out your new covers: both “Love’s Refuge” and “Love’s Miracles” on Amber’s site and I wonder why you chose heroes who need a shave. A guy who won’t shave in the morning probably didn’t take a shower either. Do women really like that look? Really?
I’d like to see what would happen if you did a split run test with a scruffy cover and a clean shaven cover. I think the clean saving guy would win.

Hi VINCE, I so agree with you. I"ve never personally liked the scruffy look and hubby never wears it. But I guess that is the "look" and what young folks who are the main buyers of books like. Guess its a marketing thing. And I have never fit into the crowd so can't ask me anyway. lol

ReplyDeleteIf you find enjoyment in throwing things, perhaps you should try playing ‘pickleball’. I’ve watched YouTube videos of people playing the game and they are having so much fun it just has to be a great stress reliever.
Imagine playing tennis with a ball that flew in ‘slow motion’ even after you smashed it! You could get to even the hardest hit, best placed, ball in time to hit it back. Why, you’d feel twenty years younger. Maybe thirty years younger. Maybe Sandra, a pickleball medalist, could teach you the game at some future writing conference.
Warning: this game just has to be addictive.

ReplyDeleteVince, I like the scruffy look and I'm not young and don't like Don Johnson or any bad guys. My dh has a skin condition that prevents close shaving, but he doesn't like a beard so he has a special razor that leaves a bit of stubble. It makes him look younger and sexier.
I wish we could use that punctuation mark that looks like an exclamation point and question mark combined. I could use it a lot.

ReplyDeleteI asked my wife who Henry Cavill was and she said he’s the new guy whose picture is on the refrigerator door along side Simon Baker.
It seems Henry is ‘the person of interest’ hero, a real clean cut guy who wears suits and is a real man’s man. He’s a good choice indeed.
BTW: my wife loved Austenland. I caught a lot of Austen references but I know I missed many more of them. Will have to see it again after I do a little Austen research. A 5-star movie.

Wait...OK, I just realized that since I'm probably going to Sacramento this weekend, there could potentially be a chance it will still be playing in a theater there (maybe?). *crosses fingers* Will definitely have to look into this!
Anywho, I found your scruffy-question interesting, so I asked what my Twitter friends thought. Got a couple of responses:
~ "depends on how the character is described in the book. I want book covers to match the writer’s descriptions"
~ "Definitely needs to match description! But I'm kinda partial to the scruffy look I gotta admit. ;)"
Add that to some of the responses on here - I think "scruffy" has its place! Hopefully Sandra's latest covers aren't keeping you from reading the stories. ;) When Lena Goldfinch and I brainstorm these covers, I tell her about the general appearance of the hero and heroine, and we try to find the right model pics to fit them - physically, as well as the tone of the book, in general. (Interestingly enough, Lena was able to add the blond braid I liked from one model to the model she ended up using on Love's Refuge - the wonders of Photoshop!) Hope you like how they turned out, overall, even if the "scruffy" isn't your thing. ;)

ReplyDeleteI like the covers for both of Sandra’s indie books just fine. Both had scruffy heroes and I was wondering about that.
Of course, what I think and what any other individual thinks is not what is important in marketing the book. What is important is what will best attract and sell the book to the best prospects for the book. So it could be the case that a majority of women do not like the scruffy look but if the best prospects for that specific story are women who dolike the scruffy look, then the scruffy look is the best choice.
I was really interested in what women think from this marketing point of view. After all, what appears on the cover can have a major impact on how well the book sells.
I hope the sales are going well and I look forward to reading the new book.
