Answers:
1. The ElRey Mark. "It would ideally be used at the end of emails, for when you’re excited, but not ~too~ excited." (BuzzFeed)
2. The Irony Mark. "A mark to indicate sarcasm? Oh, that's really useful." ~ Oscar Wilde on the irony mark (Uncyclopedia)
3. Interrobang. ..."combine(s) the functions of the question mark (also called the “interrogative point”) and the exclamation mark or exclamation point (known in printers’ and programmers' jargon as the “bang”)." (Wikipedia)
4. If you are a writer you've seen it! But do you know what this paragraph break sign is called? Pilcrow ( So Bad So Good)
5. Asterism. "This cool-looking but little-used piece of punctuation used to be the divider between sub-chapters in books or to indicate minor breaks in a long text. It's almost obsolete, since books typically now use three asterisks in a row to break within chapters (***) or simply skip an extra line." (Mental Floss)
Oh. My. Goodness.
ReplyDeleteI totally believe Julie's sleep aid story!
Fortunately, I knew book 3 was coming soon and by the time I read book 2, I only had like a 2 month wait.
Great update as always! Looking forward to the day I don't look forward to the unpubbed contest update ;). [And debating whether or not I can really swing entering a couple... :p]
Carol dahling cookie woman. I look forward to the day when I get one of your cookies.
ReplyDeleteGreat WE as always, Miss T!
ReplyDeleteAnd Carol---I never got to see you at ACFW last week (or have a cookie)---but I heard the "cookie lady" was there (yep, guess I should've worn those glasses *sigh*).
Next week looks like another great one in Seekerville! (and I'll have to be sure and tell my son that his birthday-Sept. 24-is also Punctuation Day--we had NO idea, LOL).
Sleeepy hugs, Patti Jo
National punctuation day (insert interrobang here) !? That's so awesome!
ReplyDeleteI was really hoping to win Lisa and Jennifer's books. I guess I'll just have to buy them some time.
Congrats to all the winners! Have a wonderful weekend.
National punctuation day (insert interrobang here) !? That's so awesome!
ReplyDeleteI was really hoping to win Lisa and Jennifer's books. I guess I'll just have to buy them some time.
Congrats to all the winners! Have a wonderful weekend.
Tina - didn't you get some in Tulsa?!
ReplyDeleteCarMom - :(. So many people. So little time. I met more people bc of the gluten free cookies.
And Frank Peretti called me his new best friend when I gave him some ;). Had a chance to give some to Robin Jones Gunn too :D. Both were sooooo nice!!
Tulsa? 2011!!!! That's just cruel!!
DeleteWonderful WE, as always :)
ReplyDeleteAnd wonder of wonders, I'm planning to ATTEND Mary Connealy's book signing in Sioux City!!! We're traveling, and planning to stop in Sioux City for lunch and a Mary C. sighting!
My dear husband is so indulgent.
The Interrobang would be highly useful, I think we need to petition keyboard companies to make that a key so I could use it. Or is it available in special symbols?
ReplyDeleteAnybody else notice that Emily Rodemll's 'network like a rockstar' article doesn't mention Goodreads?
ReplyDeleteI think that site just isn't a great place for authors to connect with readers. Definitely a good place to give away books or to find reads or to connect with groups of like0minded readers... but it's not a place to be socially active as an author.
And that's such a switch from what everybody was saying only 6 months ago.
And THANK YOU for the blurb article, TINA!!!!
This:
American Bestselling Author and writing teacher Mike Wells writes in his blog:
Each and every story is composed of the same five basic elements: a (1) hero who finds himself stuck in a (2) situation from which he wants to free himself by achieving a (3) goal. However, there is a (4) villain who wants to stop him from this, and if he’s successful, will cause the hero to experience a (5) disaster.
Sometimes I feel like I've seen it all, writing advice-wise. But that was brilliant. Maybe I'd seen it before but I needed it NOW!
This year is slipping by. A contest update at the end of this week? Didn't we just have one like two days ago?
ReplyDeletePunctuation Day? I didn't know any of the answers.
So many good things going on...
Punctuation Day????!!!!! Who Knew???? Seekerville that's who!!!! Happy Punctuation Day!!!!!!
ReplyDeleteI'm full of exclamation marks today because I went online at my Christian bookstore's website and woohoo they have BOTH Mary's and Myra's books in stock so I'm heading out there this morning!!!!!! Woohooooo -- isn't that amazing???? It is to me because lately they haven't been so current on getting new books in.
Oh -- and what's with no spew alert before the Gone With the Wind in 60 seconds. Snort!!!! I got hot cocoa up my nose!!!!!!!
Congrats to all the winners!
ReplyDeletePilcrow? Who knew?
I didn't.
Thanks, Tina! :)
Melissa, how's sweet baby Nathan?
ReplyDeleteHow's he doing at night? Sleeping?
Jaundice under control? Hope so. Will continue to pray for your little one. Wish we lived close. I'd like to "love on him," as they say in the South! :)
Great quote from Mike Wells' blog. Thanks for sharing, Virginia.
ReplyDeleteOkay, Teenster, this could very well be my TOP FAVORITE WE EVER!!!!
ReplyDeleteNot only do I love the quirky punctuation (WHOO-HOO!!!!!!!!), but GONE WITH THE WIND IN 60 SECONDS??? I almost fell off my chair laughing it was SOOOOO awesome!*!*!*! (my version of excited ... exclamation points and stars!!). Laughed so hard and loud, Keith had to come see what was going on. I am going to steal that video, my friend, so THANK YOU, THANK YOU, THANK YOU!!! When I need my GWTW fix next time, I'll just play the Cliff Notes version and save time ... ;)
Hugs,
Julie
Wow, Debby?! (is that proper use of interrobang? ;))
ReplyDeleteI win your book? Yay!
I did not get a cookie (though I got a photo of them) but I got to meet Carol and chat and that was even better! (yes, I could have had a cookie but I passed on chocolate and sugar at 10pm... really-- I needed to sleep. Did I? no.)
ReplyDeleteI'd like to say a big thank you to Tina, Debby, and Janet for support and encouragement going into and at the conference! And of course it's always fun to see the Seekers and Seeker friends there too. Had a nice long talk with Helen!
CAROL ... you mean there's a chance you would DOUBT something I say??? I was SO ticked off at Joanne after I finished book 2 that I not only took a sleep aid, but I had to wait two weeks before I contacted her because I needed to cool the emotions down. TALK ABOUT AN EMOTIONAL reading experience -- I am no longer the Queen of prompting readers to throw one's book against a wall, something of which I'm accused quite frequently due to roller-coaster emotions in my books!!!
ReplyDeleteAnd, PATTI JO ... you didn't get any of Carol's cookies??!!! Oh, honey, they are one of the reasons I GO to ACFW (oh, and for Carol, too, of course!!!) in the first place because they are THAT good!! ;)
Hugs,
Julie
Oops. I forgot to say thank you. Thank you!
ReplyDeleteGreat We post! Lots of interesting info. Thanks, Tina!:-)
ReplyDeleteAnd thank you, MYRA JOHNSON! I'm thrilled to win AS THE CLOUDS ROLL BY! I can't wait to read it! I enjoy reading on my Kindle, but holding a book in my hand is sweet! An autographed book is even sweeter!:-) :-) :-)
Next week looks like a super good line up of good articles.
I'm so happy for myself, I forgot to say congratulations to all the other winners! But really, I'm happy for you guys too! :-)
ReplyDeleteCAROLE, oh my I missed your cookies. I would have gone to ACFW if I'd known you were bringing those. They are awesome.
ReplyDeletePunctuation Day. I'm with you KAV-who knew???
Have fun in that bookstore. I never get out with what is on my list. Always a ton more. lol
Congrats to the winners. Have a fun day.
Did any of you get to my cover reveal yesterday? Amber and her blogger friends did a terrific job. And you should see my new cover. It is awesome. Lena did a fantastic job on it.
ReplyDeleteFun day in Seekerville!
ReplyDeleteMARY HICKS, be sure to send your snail mail address to the Seekerville email addy to claim your book!
Now to go back and check out the GONE WITH THE WIND video.
What???? Someone has invented new punctuation????
ReplyDeleteAppalling, since there are too many people in the world who have not yet learned to correctly use the punctuation marks already at our disposal.
Myra, I'm headin' over there right now to send my address to Seekerville. I couldn't open the video—drats and double drats!!
ReplyDeleteAnd just one more time—I can't wait to read your book!
Thank you again. :-)
By the way Tina, I finally got that book you helped me find by Rose Franken. Claudia and David. I ordered a very used hardback—$28 bucks, but I was so happy to get it!
ReplyDeleteThank you for taking the time to help this 'seeker'. :-)
I'm having a book signing at one of our local libraries and when I walked through the lobby I saw a table with a 'free to a good home' sign. It's stacked with LI books someone donated. I'm tempted to scoop them all up when I leave.
ReplyDeleteI just want to say that I am very sad that these punctuation marks are not on my computer keyboard. :-( I could put these to great use.
ReplyDeleteWonderful, Mary Hicks!!!!! :)
ReplyDeleteI know. It's rather disturbing, isn't Melly? I really want to use them. They are so much more expressive than a regular punct.
ReplyDeleteCongratulations on your book signing, Jamie. Oh, yes, pick up those LIs. Great research material and enjoyment.
ReplyDeleteThey are older LI books and the only name I recognized was Jillian Hart. My daughter and I picked out ten of them but I told her I didn't want to be greedy so we left them on a corner to pick up if they were still there. Back at my table less than five minutes I watched a woman walk off with the whole kit and kabootal.
ReplyDeleteOh, well I have more than enough books waiting to be read.
Congratulations to the winners! I love Julie's comment about Joanne's book. So true!
ReplyDeleteACFW Dallas Tina!! Anyone ever comes through the Springfield MO area /cough/Pam/cough/ you just let me know!!!
ReplyDeleteYeah, that blurb article was EXCELLENT!!!!
ReplyDeleteHi Tina:
ReplyDeleteAt long last I got to see “Gone with the Wind”. Now tell me this: has there ever been a hero more handsome than Clark Gable?
Vince
P.S. What do you think about having one of your characters, who comes from or has just been to Tulsa, mention that Steve’s has closed and how sad the city is. That would be a nice piece of realism. Paradise would never be the same without its Steve’s.
P.P.S. I had one of Carol’s cookies in Tulsa in 2011, and like muscle memory; my taste buds can recreate the experience. It’s a real ‘show’ not 'tell' delight. Wonderful!
Hi Julie:
ReplyDeleteThe cure for throwing books against the wall is reading only eBooks. Now I just click such books out of existence. It’s more rewarding and a lot more spouse-friendly.
Vince
Hi Sandra:
ReplyDeleteI just checked-out your new covers: both “Love’s Refuge” and “Love’s Miracles” on Amber’s site and I wonder why you chose heroes who need a shave. A guy who won’t shave in the morning probably didn’t take a shower either. Do women really like that look? Really?
I’d like to see what would happen if you did a split run test with a scruffy cover and a clean shaven cover. I think the clean saving guy would win.
What do you think?
What do Seeker women think?
This is just a weekend question.
Vince
Jamie, you should've taken them all and then re-donate when you're finished.
ReplyDeleteI'm trying to read as many LI as I can. We had a used book store that had a constant turnover on the LI books. Very popular. Then the book store moved further away.
JAN DREXLER CAME TO MY BOOKSIGNING IN SIOUX CITY, IOWA!!! I WAS ACTUALLY HONESTLY LIGHTHEADED FOR A WHILE! HER HUSBAND FLOYD CAME TOO!!!! IT WAS SUCH A SWEET MOMENT!!! SHE SAID SHE SAID SHE WAS GOING TO TRY AND MAKE IT HERE ON SEEKERVILLE BUT IT WAS AFTER I LEFT THIS MORNING SO I NEVER SAW IT!!!!! WHY DIDN'T I TAKE A PICTURE? OH I KNOW WHY, BECAUSE I WAS LIGHTHEADED!!!
ReplyDeleteYAY!
Does that mean I have to use alot of punctuation on Tuesday.
ReplyDeleteCongrats to the winners.
GWTW in 60 seconds I can handle I know I am in the minority here but I just did not like that movie.
Oh I know Connie Queen. I'm still bummed that I didn't grab them while the grabbing was good.
ReplyDeleteThe book signing (Why didn't Jan come to mine?) was in a library and the lady who reads to the little kids on Saturday called in sick so the librarian who assumed that since I can write I must be able to read asked me to fill in.
How could I disappoint 10 little kids on beanbags waiting for story time?
It's been a strange day :)
Jamie, that's a crazy story. They may hire you. Be very careful. Oh, those librarians. Ask Virginia and Clari. They are wily!!!
ReplyDeleteI got to see Mary Connealy in Sioux City today!!!!! Yay!!!!!
ReplyDeleteWe drove 400 miles just to see Mary :)
...or maybe not...
We're actually on our way to Michigan/Indiana to visit family and were passing within a mile or two of the Barnes and Noble.
And if you would, please keep my mother-in-law in your prayers. She had a stroke on Friday and is now recovering. At 90 years old, this means major changes for her. Thanks!
JAN DREXLER, praying for your precious Mother-in-law.
ReplyDeleteHugs, Patti Jo
Congratulations to all this week's winners. What a great week of posts. For one reason and another I couldn't get to them as they were posted, but I had a quiet Saturday morning to catch up.
ReplyDeleteI do like the lovely new look around here, BTW. Somebody has done some fall redecorating. :)
Jan, you can be sure of my prayers for your MIL, and for you and your family. Such a difficult time for all of you.
Praying, Jan!!
ReplyDeleteYay! I'm so excited to read these books! Thank you so much!
ReplyDeleteVince, my opinion. I like the scruffy look, even on hubby, but I don't like kissing scruffy....so since I'm not kissing the man on the cover, I vote scruffy. :)
ReplyDeleteJAMIE ADAMS---
ReplyDeleteOk, I must be totally out of it but I just realized you're Jamie Adams of 'Love's Golden Quest'. :D
I ate your wagon dust for weeks on the historical charts. Good times!! And now your new one is out. Is this the one your hubby picked the picture for the cover?
Anyway, so fun to see you on Seekerville and realize my Jamie friend from facebook is... Seekerville commenter Jamie!
Man, I am slooooowwwwwww.....
And I see it's in the Westerns. That's why I haven't had to fight you for chart space!
ReplyDeleteI totally approve the new tags. :P
Hello all,
ReplyDeleteI've been out of touch these last few weeks, but I hope I'm back full time, now. Congrats to all the winners!
The Seekerville site looks awesome!
Blessings to all,
Edwina
Hello all,
ReplyDeleteI've been out of touch these last few weeks, but I hope I'm back full time, now. Congrats to all the winners!
The Seekerville site looks awesome!
Blessings to all,
Edwina
Hi VINCE, I so agree with you. I"ve never personally liked the scruffy look and hubby never wears it. But I guess that is the "look" and what young folks who are the main buyers of books like. Guess its a marketing thing. And I have never fit into the crowd so can't ask me anyway. lol
ReplyDeleteYes, MELISSA, not fun to kiss. But hey, if that is what women like to look at???
It sure is what we see on heroes in movies and TV.
VINCE SAID: "The cure for throwing books against the wall is reading only eBooks. Now I just click such books out of existence. It’s more rewarding and a lot more spouse-friendly."
ReplyDeleteLOL ... more spouse-friendly I can believe, but more satisfying??? I don't know, Vince, I get a lot of satisfaction out of throwing things!! ;)
Hugs,
Julie
There needs to be an interrobang on a keyboard I use the !!!??? combo constantly. A mark for sarcasm would also be handy.
ReplyDeleteI've seen this.
/sarc/ but a single keystroke would get a lot of use.
Virginia, Mary (whatever your name is) you crack me up! You didn't know I was me?? lol
ReplyDeleteWhen think of all the zingers that you missed. (well, at least I was having a good time)
I dumped the wagon for a carriage in Love's Healing Power. That may be what tripped you up.
Not only that you let my secret out: The westerns crowd is kinder ;) Less big names but more series.
Hi Sandra:
ReplyDeleteActually, I think the average romance fan is a middle age woman who had a crush on Don Johnson back in the day. So that scruffy look might still work today.
Nothing says ‘bad boy’ better than a leather wearing scruffy looking guy on a Harley.
Thank God there are Love Inspired romances, free of such characters, to entertain the 9% of male readers. : )
Vince
P.S. I think I finally talked my wife into seeing “Austenland” this afternoon. I had to promise her it wasn’t a ‘silly sister’ movie. I sure hope it isn’t!
Hi Julie:
ReplyDeleteIf you find enjoyment in throwing things, perhaps you should try playing ‘pickleball’. I’ve watched YouTube videos of people playing the game and they are having so much fun it just has to be a great stress reliever.
Imagine playing tennis with a ball that flew in ‘slow motion’ even after you smashed it! You could get to even the hardest hit, best placed, ball in time to hit it back. Why, you’d feel twenty years younger. Maybe thirty years younger. Maybe Sandra, a pickleball medalist, could teach you the game at some future writing conference.
Warning: this game just has to be addictive.
Vince
I am appalled by that definition of middle aged woman!!!!
ReplyDeleteMiddle of what btw!! Don Johnson indeed!!!!!
wOmen not woman.. Typing on iPhone
ReplyDeleteCongrats winners. Beautiful weather here, not that I'll see it. I have 20K left on my self imposed deadline which comes out to 2500 words a day for the next 8 days.
ReplyDeleteVince, I like the scruffy look and I'm not young and don't like Don Johnson or any bad guys. My dh has a skin condition that prevents close shaving, but he doesn't like a beard so he has a special razor that leaves a bit of stubble. It makes him look younger and sexier.
I wish we could use that punctuation mark that looks like an exclamation point and question mark combined. I could use it a lot.
I love Seekerville. Enjoyed the posting.

Hi Tina:
ReplyDeleteThis is from the RWA website:
(2011 Romance Book Consumer survey)
• Mean age for print romance book buyers: 49
• Mean age for e-book romance buyers: 42
I think I hit the nail on the head with my definition. Of course, if you plan on living to be over 150, then this might not be considered middle age. : )
And what’s all this Don Johnson revisionism?
Women were just as crazy about Don Johnson in “Miami Vice” back in the day as they are crazy for Simon Baker today in the “Mentalist”. (But I will admit there are some women who were not crazy about either of them.)
Here’s a punctuation mark I’d like to use:
l: :l
Meaning:
Read what’s between these two marks twice because you’re not going to ‘get it’ the first time.
P.S. Don Johnson in his prime.
http://images3.wikia.nocookie.net/__cb20111123090918/miamivice/images/5/5a/Crockett.jpg
Vince, you're a hoot!
ReplyDeleteI like clean shaven. :)
Edwina, so good to see you back in Seekerville!
Jan, sending prayers for your mother-in-law!
Jamie!! I knew those were your books but I didn't know this was you HERE! Haha!! So fun to see another friend! Congrats on the success of your new book! And so glad I don't have to eat your carriage dust. (( hugs))
ReplyDeleteThe pilcrow? Seriously? That's what the symbol is called? I'm so sorry for it.
ReplyDeleteThat Jonathan Fields post was one of the best! And the book blurb article could not have come at a better time for me. But the best news is Libiro -- a chance to find new authors without other people deciding what I like to read. Yippy!
Thanks for a super WE, Tina. Oh, and don't enter me for Mary's books. I don't like them. I really, really like them. That's why I already have Fired Up :-)
Nancy C
P.S. Congrats to all you winners!
ReplyDeleteNancy C
Vince. 49 is the new 30.
ReplyDeleteAnd I know a million women who will agree with me.
Henry Cavill.
Henry Cavill.
Henry Cavill.
Tina:
ReplyDeleteI asked my wife who Henry Cavill was and she said he’s the new guy whose picture is on the refrigerator door along side Simon Baker.
It seems Henry is ‘the person of interest’ hero, a real clean cut guy who wears suits and is a real man’s man. He’s a good choice indeed.
BTW: my wife loved Austenland. I caught a lot of Austen references but I know I missed many more of them. Will have to see it again after I do a little Austen research. A 5-star movie.
Vince
Vince,
ReplyDelete1. Glad to hear you and your wife like Austenland! I really want to see it...just wish it was playing somewhere closer to me! *sigh*
Wait...OK, I just realized that since I'm probably going to Sacramento this weekend, there could potentially be a chance it will still be playing in a theater there (maybe?). *crosses fingers* Will definitely have to look into this!
Anywho, I found your scruffy-question interesting, so I asked what my Twitter friends thought. Got a couple of responses:
~ "depends on how the character is described in the book. I want book covers to match the writer’s descriptions"
~ "Definitely needs to match description! But I'm kinda partial to the scruffy look I gotta admit. ;)"
Add that to some of the responses on here - I think "scruffy" has its place! Hopefully Sandra's latest covers aren't keeping you from reading the stories. ;) When Lena Goldfinch and I brainstorm these covers, I tell her about the general appearance of the hero and heroine, and we try to find the right model pics to fit them - physically, as well as the tone of the book, in general. (Interestingly enough, Lena was able to add the blond braid I liked from one model to the model she ended up using on Love's Refuge - the wonders of Photoshop!) Hope you like how they turned out, overall, even if the "scruffy" isn't your thing. ;)
~Amber
Hi Amber:
ReplyDeleteI like the covers for both of Sandra’s indie books just fine. Both had scruffy heroes and I was wondering about that.
Of course, what I think and what any other individual thinks is not what is important in marketing the book. What is important is what will best attract and sell the book to the best prospects for the book. So it could be the case that a majority of women do not like the scruffy look but if the best prospects for that specific story are women who dolike the scruffy look, then the scruffy look is the best choice.
I was really interested in what women think from this marketing point of view. After all, what appears on the cover can have a major impact on how well the book sells.
I hope the sales are going well and I look forward to reading the new book.
Vince
