Seekerville Welcomes Barbara Vey Home From Oxford!

Debby Giusti here!
Whenever I think of mega birthday celebrations, I always think of Publishers Weekly Contributing Editor Barbara Vey’s cyber party held each March to mark the anniversary of her Beyond Her Book blog. Barbara’s a dear friend and a huge Seekerville supporter, and our own party wouldn’t be complete without a visit from this amazing woman whose name is a buzz word in the publishing industry.

Over the last six years, Barbara has become well known not only within the US, but her fame has spread internationally as well! She was invited to speak at Oxford and just returned from what had to be a trip of a lifetime. Barbara wanted to share the details of her travels with us today. Her success is proof that, with hard work and perseverance, dreams do come true. Please join me in welcoming Barbara back to Seekerville!

Happy 6th Birthday Seekerville! We both were born the same year. Mine is in March, so I am a little older. I know there have been a lot of changes here at Seekerville with the blog and the authors. Much success with over 1 million views. Congratulations! And I’ve had my share of changes.

My Publishers Weekly blog, Beyond Her Book, has humble beginnings. I was a reader they literally plucked from the sea when I met the Deputy Editor on a cruise. Since I was such an avid reader, I was asked to write a blog featuring women’s fiction. I wasn’t sure what women’s fiction was, so I just wrote about books I read, authors I met and conferences I went to. The blog was even called Beyond The Book when I started, but we soon found out that was a copyrighted name.
Barbara makes every event a party!
My first anniversary I celebrated with a virtual party that was pretty much unheard of over 6 years ago. I had over 700 comments that day and was in shock. Over the years, the parties have gotten bigger and last year ended up with over 28,000 comments over 6 days.
Everyone loves Barbara, including NYT best-selling author
Tess Gerritsen!
Going to writers conferences was brand new for me too. I went to my first RT and
RWA conferences that year and discovered how different they were. I thought of RT like high school and RWA like college. Since then I have attended Sleuthfest, Thrillerfest, Comic Con, Horrorfest, Heather Graham’s New Orleans Conference, Crimebake, numerous local RWA conferences and even the American Christian Fiction Writer’s Conference. And just this past week I’ve gone international.
Barbara's lodging in Oxford!
I was asked to speak at Oxford, in England, to the writers there. I had to get my very first passport and was so excited when I received my first stamp in the book. The writers were wonderful and so interested in everything I had to say. They are way behind us in social media. Twitter and Facebook scare most of them and only 2 even had Facebook pages.
Barbara always WOWS her audience!
Then I headed to London to tour Mills and Boon. They actually celebrated “Barbara Vey Day” when I was there with signs welcoming me, roses, desserts and champagne. Now that’s the kind of welcome I really appreciate. I met all the editors and saw the processes a book has to go through. A few authors even showed up so I did some video interviews that you’ll be seeing this week on my blog.
Mills and Boon welcomes Barbara with champagne and roses!
Next up was a quick trip to Scotland. How could I be so close to my Highlanders and not stop by to say hi? Author Margarite Kaye took the ferry over to Edinburgh, and we took the double decker bus tour, heard the bagpipes and saw many kilts. One day just wasn’t long enough there.
Don't we all love guys in uniforms! Here Barbara poses
with the bobbies!
I even managed to catch up with a Facebook friend, reader Wendy. She took a 2 ½ hour bus ride to see me in Oxford and then came back a few days later with her sister, Marcia, who wanted to meet me. Readers are incredible the world over and it’s great to talk books with all of them.
Barbara with reader friends Marcia and Wendy.
Next year I’ll be speaking at the International Women’s Fiction Festival in Matera, Italy. I have to pinch myself. Otherwise, I’m not sure what the future holds, but if it involves books, I’m fine with it.

Congrats, Barbara! We're so proud of you and honored that you could join us in Seekerville today. I'm looking forward to your next Reader Appreciation Luncheon and want to ensure all the Villagers know about that special event.

In 2012, Barbara hosted her first Reader Appreciation Luncheon in Milwaukee, WI, which was a huge success. Last year attracted more readers, and Barbara expects close to 500 to attend the April 26, 2014 luncheon. Keynote speaker Debbie Macomber joins 50 other authors who will host tables and provide baskets and goodies and lots of books to all those who attend the festive event. Today, Seeker host Debby Giusti is giving away a luncheon ticket—a $45 prize--to one lucky winner. If you want to be included in the drawing, mention Barbara’s Reader Appreciation Luncheon in your comment. (The prize is for the luncheon registration. All other expenses, including travel and hotel accommodations, are the winner’s responsibility.) Proceeds from this event will benefit Sojourner Family Peace Center of Milwaukee, an organization that offers a safe environment for women and children affected by domestic violence. Many folks arrive on Friday for a special night with the authors. For more details about the event, click here.

Additional drawings today include a book giveaway from Barbara and a journal and 2014 planner/calendar from Debby, along with her latest release, THE SOLDIER’S SISTER.

Every comment enters you in this week's overall prize of a $50 Amazon Gift Card and also in the BIG BIRTHDAY BASH GRAND PRIZE for the month--an iPAD MINI!!!! Good luck, everyone!

The breakfast bar is open. Today’s menu includes egg and sausage casserole, baked ham, fresh fruit, an assortment of breads and muffins, and grits! Enjoy! The coffee’s hot; so is the tea. Colas are available as well.

Grab some food, fill your cup and let's spend the day with Barbara Vey!

  1. We need these luncheons in more places!

The bookstore I just did a signing at held a Librarian day. She invited all the church librarians in the area to the bookstore which has a big basement room, catered them lunch and then she and her associates basically did verbal book reports on as many of the new books for the year that they all worked to read. They gave them a list so they could jot down besides the titles if they were interested in purchasing it. And then she gave them 25% off if they bought books within the week. And well, two authors just happened to be upstairs waiting to sign books.

Anyway, I think every book store should do that, it was so cool. I wanted to be a church librarian! :)

  2. I would LOVEto go to the luncheon, but even if I won the ticket, it will not work for me this time, so please leave my name out...but if there's a book to be won, I want a chance. I'm headed over to Beyond Her Book blog...how can I have missed it? Thanks for a great post

  3. Wow Melissa! I'm a church librarian and would lOve attending such an event.

Barbara, I think it is amazing you have such a successful career doing something you truly love. I so wish your luncheon was being held in Oklahoma.

  6. Barbara, one more thing. It might blow their mind to say that even my DOG has a Facebook page! May the K9 Spy.

There is a HUGE following for dog lovers (and cats, and rabbits, and horses... you name it). We hang out with the dog community. Some have tens of thousands of followers. It's really amazing. :D

As much as I would love to go to Barbara's luncheon I think it is out of the question for me next year, but I would love to be entered for the book giveaway from Barbara and especially the journal and 2014 planner & Debby's book.

    Have a happy, happy day!

    Smiles & Blessings,
    Cindy W.

Barbara, we're so honored you could be with us today! Looks like you got up early. Are you still working through your jet lag? Such a wonderful trip! Loved seeing the pics and hearing the details.

  23. Hi Melissa,
Thanks for sharing about the librarian luncheon in your area of the world. What a great idea!!! Your bookseller is amazing. A real jewel. You're so lucky to know her and be able to sign in her store where, no doubt, readers and librarians get special treatment. A future RWA bookseller of the year, perhaps?

    ReplyDelete
  24. Marianne,

Barbara's Beyond Her Book blog is a great place for readers and writers. Lots of book reviews and behind the scenes looks at the publishing industry and national writing events. If it's happening in the book world, Barbara is there!

Even Oxford! How fantastic! Good for you, Barbara!

    ReplyDelete
  25. Terri, wouldn't it be wonderful if Barbara could host a number of luncheons in various parts of the country.

Knowing Barbara, she just might! Stay tuned...

    ReplyDelete
  26. Hi Heidi,
You're in the drawing. Did you get breakfast?

The coffee's so good this morning.

    ReplyDelete
  27. KC,

Let us know if the booksellers in your area host a similar event!

How's your recoup time going, KC? I know you've been hard at working getting book three ready for publication. Hope you and May have been able to relax a bit and enjoy the beautiful fall weather!

Did I mention doggie bones for May are behind the breakfast bar?

    ReplyDelete
  28. Hi Jan, thanks for the Seekerville birthday greetings. Be sure to celebrate Barbara's Beyond Her Book Birthday Bash in March. She'll be at year seven!

  29. I love the breakfast bar! That would fortify me for work. Thank you! lol. Thanks Barbara for a wonderful post and sharing the pictures! What an awesome journey. Would love to hear more and see more pictures! Don't enter me in the luncheon. Too far for me. But it sounds like a lot of fun! Thanks! I might have to add gravy to the buffet: how about sausage gravy and chocolate gravy?

  30. Hi Jackie,
Doesn't Italy sound fantastic. Too bad Barbara can't arrange a tour group to travel with her...

Hmmmm, perhaps something to consider for the future, Barbara! :)

  31. Hi Sally, I have more pictures on my blog and will put them up all week including videos. Thanks for stopping by.

    ReplyDelete
  32. Hi Deb,
Isn't it amazing how God placed Barbara on that cruise and that she sat next to one of the head folks in PW!

I would love to have overheard their conversation...Barbara saying she loved books...the Deputy Editor listening and shaking her head.

Knowing Barbara, she probably told the PW editor she needed more romance in her publication!

    ReplyDelete
  33. HI Sally,

Barbara has lots of pictures and more highlights from her trip on her Beyond Her Book blog. Visit her there too, but be sure to come back to Seekerville for more birthday fun!

    Thanks for the gravy!

    ReplyDelete
  34. Went to visit, but now I'm back. Wonderful pictures and they guy playing the bagpipes--wonderful! Thanks!

  35. Sally,

  36. Welcome back to Seekerville, Barbara! I can't think of ANYWHERE I'd rather go than the UK! And don't you just love Oxford? I hope to go back for another visit someday. Sounds as if you were treated like royalty -- and I hope you got a chance to check out a few bookstores while you were over there. That was a REAL treat for me. :)

  37. Totally jealous of the travelling Barbara. Maybe one day . . . :-)

  38. Good Morning Barbara and Debby!

    Barbara,

Your birthday celebration on Beyond Her Book is so much fun!

You do such great things for authors and we THANK you.

    ReplyDelete
  39. Glynna, I really was treated like royalty and I kind of liked it. I was disappointed in the bookstores. They didn't have a romance section. The books are mixed with the other books.

  40. Hi Barbara, it was fun reading about your London/Scotland adventures, I too am waiting to use my passport there.

    ReplyDelete
  41. Naomi, I just got my passport at age 62. I'm just getting started!

    ReplyDelete
  42. Aloha! I remember watching the crowd of authors leave RT/Chicago for Barbara's inaugral luncheon in Milwaukee in 2012. I missed last year's luncheon - we visited hubby in Korea. Since then, we have moved to Maryland, making it very easy to attend. I'm already signed up and waiting for Southwest to open it flight reservations for April! Mahalo for sharing Barbara's recent adventures in England!

    ReplyDelete
  43. Hi Dina, you'll love it in London/Scotland!

    ReplyDelete
  44. Kim, excited you'll be at the luncheon next year!

    ReplyDelete
  45. Barbara, I love your success story and the warmth and humor and honesty you bring to the publishing marketplace!

I agree with Melissa, these luncheons should be spread out regionally.... how fun would that be?

Hey, ROCHESTER AND BUFFALO/WESTERN NEW YORK WRITERS love Barbara Vey!!! I think upstate/WNY/Northern PA should be the next venue!

We want Barbara! We want Barbara! We want Barbara!!!!

I'm all over having food for today's shindig and we're making homemade rainy day cookies, so I'm contributing to the virtual table. Barbara, thank you so much for being here, for hanging with us for our birthday! Love it!!!

    ReplyDelete
  46. Oh my goodness, Barbara, what a wonderful opportunity!!! And your story is fantastic!
Did you feel like the queen with all those signs up in your honor? Did you perfect the 'wave' to your adoring fans? :-)

So glad to see you at Seekerville today.

    ReplyDelete
  47. Wow, Barbara, what an adventure you've been on! :) I've always wanted to visit England, but the closest I've gotten was the Manchester airport for an unexpected layover. Sigh.

I didn't realize you began blogging about Women's Fiction. That is what I've been writing. :) And there are international women's fiction conferences? WOW! Italy should be amazing. :) I hope you'll get to do some touring of the country.

It's fun to hear your excitement over books and the doors that have opened up to you because of your blog's humble beginnings. I'm so glad you were here to share today!

    ReplyDelete
  48. Ruth, we could totally rock a luncheon in that area! :)

    ReplyDelete
  49. Pepper, I did feel like a Queen. The people at Mills & Boon were just fantastic. Still working on the wave though.

The family and I traveled there when we lived in Germany. We crossed on the ferry at Dover. Hubby drove on the left while I navigated. We survived!

So glad to see you here today.

  84. I met Barbara at her very first RWA conference. My fellow Playfriends from the Writing Playground couldn't believe it when she wanted to interview us. We were thrilled and also thrilled to get to know this fabulous lady. No one deserves success any more than she does.

While I'd love to go, don't enter me in the drawing as I can't make it to her luncheon. Maybe another year.

    ReplyDelete
  85. I have a hair appointment. I know, poor timing. I'll be away from my computer for a couple hours but wanted to invite everyone to the make-your-own-deli-sandwich lunch buffet. Chips and dips. Lots of colas. The coffee's still hot. Iced tea. Hot tea.

Birthday cake and ice cream for dessert!

Red Velvet, German Chocolate, Applesauce, Carrot, Angel food, pound cake, rum raisin, spice...and more!

    Happy Birthday, Seekerville!!!

I'd love to be in for the drawing for the Readers Appreciation Luncheon. Debby has talked about it here on Seekerville, and it sounds like so much fun :)

I will make your blog required reading from now on. Please enter me in the drawings.

  101. Julie, thanks for the kind words. I always feel so welcome at Seekerville.

    ReplyDelete
  102. Hi Marilyn, it's wonderful to see you here. I'm sorry you can't make it to the luncheon. I hope you can some day. I still remember the day we met. Good times!

    ReplyDelete
  103. Hi Julie, I'd love to tour the US. Next month I'll be in Birmingham for the Southern Magic Luncheon and a couple weeks later in St. Louis to do a workshop for the RWA authors there. I feel so blessed to have this opportunity.

    ReplyDelete
  104. Jamie, right now I'm so addicted to the Amazing Race. It's so exciting to see them travel all over the world. I like to think I'm in training for it. :)

    ReplyDelete
  105. Melanie, I'm looking forward to Birmingham. Be sure to stop me and say hi.

    ReplyDelete
  106. Hi CatMom, it's an honor to be asked back and I do love a good party.

  107. Jan, my job is a dream come true. Good luck on winning the ticket to the luncheon. It's really a fabulous time.

  108. Mary, thank you so much. I really appreciate all my readers. Hope you enjoy the blog.

  109. The place you stayed at in Oxford England is gorgeous! I wish we could see pictures of the inside!

  110. Wow Salyna, that must have taken you forever. LOL, thanks for stopping by.

  111. Good afternoon Seekerville,

    Hi Barbara,

We met briefly at RWA this summer. I loved your comparison of RT and RWA conferences. I've yet to be to RT to see how it resembles high school, but it made me laugh.

Your luncheon is a wonderful way to bring writers and authors together, I'm still in school around that time, but that outreach is so important.

Thanks for bringing cake Debby for that afternoon boost! Spice for me please...

    ReplyDelete
  112. Thanks Debby,

May is thrilled you remembered her! YUMMO!

I hope to be able to go to THE event. Unsure if I will but, maybe if I win the ticket, that would be a *hint* I should really do it! Love that people are still talking about your gift basket. That's just like you!!!

We're hanging in there. Hoped to have books in paw for the school visit and show this weekend, but looks like they'll arrive one day next week.

So. Excited. But. Tired... A fun tired, but still! ;)

Barbara, know you'll enjoy your next trip(s) too. Thanks ever so much again, for sharing your photos. Keep up the terrific work!

    ReplyDelete
  113. Piper, you'll have to let me know what you think of RT after you attend. :)

    ReplyDelete
  114. KC, glad you enjoyed the pics. I really have a ton of them and love to relook at them.

    ReplyDelete
  115. Hello, Barbara! You so impressed me when you took the time to read my profile and make a personalized comment to me--one of the 28,000 commenters--during your fabulous BHB birthday bash. I'll have a cup of English tea in honor of your success and your fabulous trip. Congratulations and thank you!

    ReplyDelete
  116. What a great post -- I really liked reading about your travels & especially how you were plucked from being a reader to become a blog writer -- and that you didn't know what women's fiction was. How great to love reading so much that you don't think about genres. Thanks for the post!

    ReplyDelete
  117. Welcome back to Seekerville, Barbara! I've really enjoyed getting to know you the last few years as we've hooked up at conferences. I'm amazed how you were plucked from the sea to begin the blog Beyond Her Book and to see how that has blossomed and grown into an amazing success story! Talk about a dream job!

Congratulations on speaking at Cambridge! What a terrific opportunity to connect with authors and to see that part of the world. Love that HQ UK gave you such a warm welcome!

Wish I could attend your Reader Appreciation luncheon. Know I'd love every moment of it!

Thanks for your generous shout outs for Seekerville. You're the best!

    Janet

  118. I'm back!

Hope everyone's enjoying the deli sandwiches and birthday cake!!!

Marilyn, your wrote the following about Barbara: "No one deserves success more than she does."

    I agree!

Your Writing Playground is a great blog! That was the first blog I ever posted on. You invited me to guest, and I wrote about the Christian market. Thank you!

  119. Barbara, thank you so much for being on Seekerville. It's always such a treat to have you on.

I've had a morning I wouldn't wish on my worst enemy. (Not that I really HAVE enemies, you know, but still.....bad morning)
So I'm slow and on today of all days.

I wish I was coming to this luncheon.

Tina, didn't we plan to do this? Try and go to this? What happened?

    ReplyDelete
  120. Yay, Julie! You're in the drawings...all of them!

A US tour for Barbara so we could all spend time with her...how fun!

BTW, she'll be at the Southern Magic Readers Luncheon in Birmingham, AL, on NOV 2.

    ReplyDelete
  121. Jeanne, have fun at school! You're in the book drawings. :)

    ReplyDelete
  122. RT as in Kansas City last year. I would have LOVED To go but it was just right at a time that made it impossible.
But I will make it one of these days.
It's in....maybe New Orleans this year?

Much too far away. At least to go on a whim. But Milwaukee....Debby do you have a LOT of tickets left for your table? Are you selling them? How does that work?

    ReplyDelete
  123. Sherida, thanks for coming to my Anniversary Bash. Enjoy your tea!

    ReplyDelete
  124. Susan, I loved the word plucked and it really applies. I'm glad they saw something in me.

    ReplyDelete
  125. Hi Jamie,

Glad you follow Barbara on Twitter! :)

I cut a large slice of spice cake for you. I'm sure you're hungry after teaching all day.

    Enjoy!

    ReplyDelete
  131. Hi Janet, I always love running into you at conferences. I'm hoping I get asked back to ACFW next year.

    ReplyDelete
  132. Mary, glad you could stop by even with your crazy morning.

    ReplyDelete
  133. KC, too bad about the timing of the shipment of your books! I know your school visit will be wonderful, even without your new story to share.

    ReplyDelete
  134. Sounds like fun travels - welcome back!

    ReplyDelete
  135. Sherida,

Barbara is always a gracious hostess and makes everyone feel at home...even when 28,000 folks leave a comment. :)

A cup of tea sounds perfect this afternoon. Birthday cake or scones?

    ReplyDelete
  136. Barbara, it's so nice to have you in Seekerville today! Wow, I have always wanted to visit England--loved seeing your pix!

And after hearing Debby talk about how fabulous your reader luncheons are, I hope I can attend one of those someday! Thanks so much for all the many ways you support romance fiction, especially inspirational. The Seekers are honored to call you our friend!

    ReplyDelete
  137. Waving to Susan! So glad you could visit with Barbara today.

    Tea?

    ReplyDelete
  138. Hi Janet!

The ACFW Conference in Dallas was so special, especially because Barbara was there. Delightful memories!

    ReplyDelete
  139. Myra, I would love to see you at one of the luncheon.

    ReplyDelete
  140. Barbara, I hope the same! St. Louis here we come!

The RWA conference is in San Antonio. I've never been there. Are you planning to go?

    Janet

    ReplyDelete
  141. Hi Mary,

Sorry about your frustrating morning. Hope things are better now!

My table sold out a couple weeks ago, but open seating tickets are still available. Of course, I'm thrilled and so grateful to those who will be joining me that day.

Barbara's expecting 500 folks, and the tickets are going fast! I can't wait to see who wins today's drawing!!!

Friday night there's a Q&A with authors that's open to the public. A social time follows. Last year, it was a relaxing and fun evening when everyone mixed and mingled. The luncheon is the next day. This year, Barbara's asked some of the authors to read excerpts from their books to those waiting for the doors to open. Every year it gets bigger and better!

    ReplyDelete
  142. Debby, any time Seekers gather is a great memory for me. Add special people like Barbara and Villagers and we've got a party!

    Janet

    ReplyDelete
  143. Hi Sharon,
Thanks for visiting Seekerville today. Care for some birthday cake?

    ReplyDelete
  144. Hi Myra,

You're right. We are honored to call Barbara friend, and she does do so much for the inspirational genre!

    Thanks, Barbara!

    ReplyDelete
  145. Hi Barbara,
Congrats on Oxford and all the exciting things going on for you! Last year was my first year at the luncheon and thanks to my dh, I have a ticket for this year, too!

**Debra Marvin** Come visit that weekend!

    ReplyDelete
  146. Lyndee! What a sweet hubby! So glad you'll be there this year. Last year was so special!

    (Talk Deb M into visiting!)

    ReplyDelete
  147. Janet, I'll be at RWA and St. Louis is where my son lives, so I'd love to attend.

    ReplyDelete
  148. Barbara, how fun to go to Oxford and on to Scotland. My sister lives in England right now and I so want to go visit. Funny we lived in Germany and I did get to go to England but after four years there, we never made it to Scotland or Ireland.

Congrats on your birthday too, and thanks so much for coming to share at Seekerville. The luncheon sounds awesome, but I probably wouldn't able to attend so don't enter me.

    Blessings

    ReplyDelete
  149. Lyndee, I'm thrilled you'll be coming. Be sure to stop me and say hi.

    ReplyDelete
  150. Tina, I hope you get to visit your sister and Scotland is about 4 1/2 hours away by train.

    ReplyDelete
  151. Yeah,

    I hope to go, Barbara.

my sister let me know that she's been and had a fun time looking at where our family came from. We're Scots Irish Indian.

I remember traveling in England, we watched them making a movie, rode the train and double decker buses and tried to get the guards to smile.

    ReplyDelete
  152. Hi Tina,

My fam and I visited England when we lived in Germany, but like you, we didn't tour Scotland or Ireland. Our loss! Would love to return. Seeing Barbara's pictures made me want to grab a flight and head to the UK! If only. :)

    ReplyDelete
  153. Hi Heidi,

Thanks for stopping by and for the birthday greetings. Hope all is well. Looking forward to seeing you in April! Wish we didn't have to wait that long. Come south...

    ReplyDelete
  154. Hi Heidi, glad you had time to stop by.

    ReplyDelete
  155. Good to see you here, Barbara, right after your trip and to hear more about the work you're doing. Such a fantastic opportunity to be invited to speak to writers in the UK. I especially love Oxford as my husband's family lives there and I go there every other year. Will take a look at the pics at your blog. Among my friends and family there only a few have a FB account so I know what you're saying is true. They just seem to be timid about social media. Please don't include me in the drawing for the luncheon and I have Debby's novel yet to read. Thank you.

    ReplyDelete
  156. Happy birthday Seekerville! The food is amazing! Barbara, your pictures and stories from England are wonderful. Thanks for sharing. 159. Barbara,

I sure will! I won't be able to do RT next year, but maybe the year after that...looking forward to it!

Debby, your hair looks great! Thank you for that spice cake. And I love the cavalier way you say your table is sold out! Excellent!I hope every one enjoys the time they spend with Barbara and the other authors.

  182. I have to say I love Barbara Vey. 3 or 4 years ago I stumbled across a Facebook post regarding an online party. I had never heard of an online party before. I started commenting and making friends, went crazy when author Dianna Love responded to a comment I made. I have found so many new authors to read and follow some of which have lead to friendships that I did not think we're possible. Not to mention I have become addicted to online parties and won some amazing things. I desperately tried to find Barbara at the RT convention this year and always missed her. I would like to say thank you to Barbara for allowing all this to happen for me and just being such a great, giving person. (Please don't include me in the ticket giveaway, I would love to go but not feasible for me to)
