 Contest Placements:

2013 ACFW First Impressions—1st Place (Young Adult Category)
2013 Hudson Valley RWA Hook, Line and Sinker—3rd Place

I am fairly new to the world of writing contests. The first one I ever entered was the ACFW Mile High Scribes 2013 One-Sheet Contest. I had no idea what I was doing so it was no surprise I was not selected as a finalist. You may be asking yourself, “Isn’t placing or winning the whole point of entering contests?”

Yes and no.

I say “yes” only because the longer you remain in the running, the more professional feedback you receive. In the end, feedback is what it’s all about. The more eyes that see your manuscript, whether in whole or in parts, the wider range of suggestions, compliments, and critiques you have to help you along the journey. You may have one judge who loves your work and another who detests it. You have to take it all in stride and consider which suggestions to take and leave. Contests definitely help you develop a thicker skin. For example, I won first place in the YA category for the 2013 First Impressions contest, so you would think every judge loved it. On the contrary, I had one judge who gave me some really negative feedback. For some reason or another, my story just didn’t resonate with that judge.

Remember, not everyone will love your book. Everyone has different tastes and preferences, which is why contests are so helpful. When you enter a contest, you are getting a little glimpse of what it’s like to be published. While the judges are all professionals, they are still just readers looking for the same thing we all look for.

A good story.

I enter contests not only to gain experience and hone my writing skills, but also because they give me real and tangible deadlines. As an unpublished author, I have the freedom to work on my novel at my leisure. It is this very luxury that helped me realize I needed a real deadline if I was ever going to finish. Personally, I work best under pressure, with deadlines someone else has set. I can make lists and tell myself something is due on a certain date, but unless I am accountable to someone else, I have a hard time putting my behind in the chair.

The big fish of contests for unpublished authors (in my opinion) is the ACFW Genesis Contest. The deadline is March 15th, which gives me exactly 43 days from the time I am writing this to finish my novel. Because of this deadline I choose to write, even when it’s the last thing I want to be doing. I stay up late even when I’m dead tired. I write during my toddler’s nap time, even when I should really be napping myself. I write instead of catching up on my favorite shows. The life of a writer requires hard work and sacrifice, and yes, it requires deadlines. Whether you are published or not, I believe real and tangible deadlines are needed if you want your manuscript to include two of the best words ever written.

The End.

This month we have a Glendale, Arizona, Public Library Bag full of surprises up for grabs. All you have to do is comment.

  1. Give me enough coffee, and I can rule the world! Ya, I know that's not necessarily a reader or a writer quote, but I'm waiting for the coffee to finish brewing! Wishing you all a superduper weekend!

  2. Coffee's on!

Still off the contest circuit. Not eligible for published or unpublished.

With Ozark Sweetheart debuting this week and AA's expected soon, I needed a doable goal for Speedbo a goal. So I'm aiming for three chapters and a full outline/synopsis of a new project.

  3. Great WE, Tina. I'm writing right now, not contesting.

Congrats, Sara and thanks for sharing your contest journey.

Question for Love Inspired authors (the 45,000 word MS) - About what word count do you stop climbing the mountain and start heading downhill to The End? Mary gave me a gauge for that once on a 75,000 MS and it really helped with my LI historical.

I've brought an assortment of Nonni's THINAddictives to share this morning. They are perfect with coffee and tea and WW friendly. My current favorite is mango/coconut, but the pistachio/almond are great, too.

  4. Lyndee, no clue. I write short and have to layer in to reach word count, so 45000 could very well BE DONE for me.

  5. OOH, I have AAs this weekend myself, Helen. Love putting those babies to bed.

  6. Toasting you, Marianne with a cup of java.

  8. Good morning. Glad the coffee's on as my eyes don't want to open beyond a crack. But it's Friday and I'm excited about starting Speedbo.

I'm not anywhere close to start entering contests but I'm excited about pushing forward to the point I can enter.

Would love to be entered in the giveaway.

    Smiles & Blessings,
    Cindy W.

  9. Good morning,

You got my attention, thanks. I'm going to look into Fool for Love and the Daphne.
But my main focus this month will be Speedbo!

    Have a great day!

  10. Yay another contest edition. Love those.

    Speedbo starts tomorrow. Yay.

    Happy writing everyone.

  11. MARIANNE can I have a cup of coffee?

I'll bring some cinnamon cake to go with it. Not as good as your cinnamon rolls, but it will do in a pinch.

  12. I'm done entering contests until later this year.

Good luck to everyone who enters contests!

  13. I want to give a shout out to Sara Ella. She represents many of our wonderful, eager new writers in Seekerville.

Willing to learn, to change, and to grow. That's what leads to a successful writing career.

    WOOT!!!

  14. Good luck to all who are contesting! That's gotta' be exciting, the waiting to hear back... :-)

    I'm writing all weekend, yahooo!

  15. Can't think of any pithy, cool, or even ho-hum quotes at the moment. I'm more, sort of "blast it, I need to write..." because I don't have anything for these contest opportunities. *banging head against wall*

i've signed up for SPEEDBO in an effort to "Do or do not - there is no try. -Yoda"

there... a quote. I need to start DO-ing.

TINA - as always, an awesome job on the contest update.

  16. Sara, thank you for sharing your journey! I entered a couple of writing contests last year. It was for the feedback, and to see if I really had what it would take. I am looking forward to entering more contests! I need those deadlines to continue writing.

  17. Speedbo sign ups are breaking Seekerville records. We are knocking it out of the ball park this year.

    ReplyDelete
  18. Yay, Sara! Good for you for entering and learning from your feedback. I always entered for feedback as well as to get my work in front of certain editors and agents. And those deadlines are definitely a plus. Nice practice for the deadlines I have these days. :)

    ReplyDelete
  19. Sara, congrats on your contest successes! I entered ACFW's First Impressions, and though I didn't place, the feedback was encouraging and VERY helpful. That is such a great contest.

Speedbo--I'm excited for it! My plan for today is to making novel-planning and brainstorming a priority!

    ReplyDelete
  20. Sara, congratulations!!!! Hoot! Hoot!!!! HOOOOOOOT!!!!!!

I love contest divas, I love having been a contest diva, I love the doors that opened. SUHWEET!!!!

Lyndee are you talking for Heartsong? My novella for Summerside "Red Kettle Christmas" this past Christmas season was 40K and I gauged it at @10k for the initial attraction, 20k for story build, 10k for black moment and resolution.

That seemed to be a perfect arc for me.

I love that Speedbo records are rolling on and upwards! The idea that so many writers are wanting to develop good, daily writing habits is huge!!!!

    ReplyDelete
  21. Lyndee, do you mean Heartsong? Because contemporary LI like I write is 55-60k words.

I'll go check my last mss, though, to see where I have the black moment.

    Be right back...

    ReplyDelete
  22. Well, I'm focusing on finishing Tina and Max's Excellent Christmas Adventure, (working title!!!!) which has a cute, iTALIAN, petite, tough-as-nails, sweet-as-pie, drill-sergeant type heroine who does not resemble ANYONE I KNOW.

    NO ONE> REALLY> I MEAN THAT!

The fact that the heroine is named Tina Marie is strictly coincidental because it's such a cute, sweet Italian name.

But if she did resemble anyone I know, she'd share the SECRET CHOCOLATE SPICE COOKIE RECIPE WITH HER FRIEND RUFUS.

Especially since it is a CHRISTMAS BOOK.

    That's all I'm sayin'.

    Youse understand.

    ReplyDelete
  23. Lyndee, I just checked Georgia Sweethearts. It looks like the point where the black moment happens around 53k out of 60k words. It was about the last 25-30 pages.

    ReplyDelete
  24. Way to go Jennifer!!!!

    No pain. No gain.

    ReplyDelete
  25. I am CRINGING, Ruthy. CRINGING.

    ReplyDelete
  26. Oh gosh, Tina, every time I see a contest update, I get a tic in my eye because it stirs my competitive nature deep down, but then my common sense comes to the rescue and says (in a low voice), "Julie, step away from the contest."

Sigh. Sound advice for someone looking to pull away from almost all promo.

    Hugs,
    Julie

    ReplyDelete
  27. The secret recipe.

    hahahahahahahahahaha.

    Maniacal laughter continues....

    ReplyDelete
  28. Lyndee, I also meant to say that I have a feeling the point of the black moment in my stories varies in each one! I don't have a target spot.

Also meant to thank Tina for the contest update!

    ReplyDelete
  29. LOLing so hard about she-who-shall-remained-unnamed starring in Ruthy's next book!!

Also got a kick out of the working title, Ruthy. :)

    ReplyDelete
  30. Max? Who is this Max???

  31. Great contest update!
Sara Ella, congratulations on becoming contest diva!
Can't wait for speedbo to start tomorrow. As for updating my contest status, I have four mss entered in ACFW's Genesis, and two more almost ready. Just a little more editing, and they'll be good to go.

    ReplyDelete
  32. Thanks for the contest update, Tina! I'm entered in all the published contests I had books for. LOL

  37. Thank you, Seekerville, for sharing these contests. I've followed them closely in the past year, and they've been a tremendous help to my book. It's finaled in four, won two, and I'm waiting to hear on the fourth. I'm also waiting on a fifth contest to hear about the final round. There's a contest in today's post that I'm going to check out.

It's been so cool to take the feedback, apply it, send it off to another contest, and see the entry do better and better. So encouraging!

    ReplyDelete
  38. I'm entering Genesis again. Can't wait for those judge's critiques!

Have a wonderful weekend, everyone! :-)

    ReplyDelete
  39. I'm with you, Julie. It's so hard not to enter EVERYTHING!!!

    ReplyDelete
  40. Sally Bradley, I've been watching your diva trail. It's smokin'

    ReplyDelete
  41. I decided I wasn't going to enter any contests in the near future...then I read this update. Now I'm undecided. Lol.
Contests are fun and a learning experience all in one. How can I pass that up???
(Please enter me, by the way.)

    ReplyDelete
  42. Sara, keep writing and entering those contests. Congratulations.

Thanks for the update, Tina. My plate is full so I probably won't enter any this month.

    ReplyDelete
  43. Love these contest updates, Tina!

Sort of. Entering contests can be scary and intimidating, but the feedback (positive or negative) is almost always worth it in the end.

Love your opening quote: "I just want to drink coffee, create stuff, and sleep." Although I would change it to "eat M&Ms and drink Earl Grey."

    ReplyDelete
  44. LYNDEE, here's my take on when to bring your story to a conclusion. I don't keep track of where I am in the word count to make certain things happen. My main goal is to develop an ending that is completely satisfying but not any longer than it has to be. Once the main conflict is resolved and loose ends tied up, all readers need to see is a glimpse of the H/H embarking on their HEA. Anything more is superfluous.

So, bottom line, the ending comes when the time is right. No sooner, no later.

    ReplyDelete
  45. Thanks for the congrats, Lyndee H!

Tina, thank you SO much for this opportunity to be featured on my favorite blog for writers. Seekerville is my haven.

Sally Shupe, good luck on your own journey and contest entries:) Sounds like we share the need for deadlines. Happy Writing!

Hi Missy! Yes on feedback! It is invaluable and worth the entry fees. I think the more we have the better we become at this whole writing thing:)

Hi Jennifer! Thanks so much. Keep entering those contests and good luck on your journey!

Hi Ruth! Thanks for the exuberant welcome. I'm honored to be here!

Crystal, thank u!!! I love being here:)

Janet, thanks so much! I have gotten so much from your posts here on Seekerville! Happy Writing!

Courtney, contests have truly changed my writing life. I encourage you to enter and get your work out there! The feedback is invaluable:)

    Connie, thanks! I will:)

Myra, I wholeheartedly agree! Ate half a large bag of dark chocolate m&m's last night and earl grey with cream and honey is heaven! Also, your advice on the ending is great! It happens when the time is right:)

  46. "I believe real and tangible deadlines are needed if you want your manuscript to include two of the best words ever written. The End." Thanks for this great tidbit - I need to hear it daily!

  47. Congrats, Sara Ella!!! Thanks for your encouraging words of wisdom!

Wow, those contests have a certain siren call for me. :) I had been on the fence about the Genesis, not thinking I really have a good chance since my finished MS didn't do well in First Impressions. I did revise since then, though. Might try it out. It's the first year I have a complete MS to enter and I can't really pass that up. :) Today's my "get the entry down to the required word count" day. Hard work ahead, but I'm excited.

    AAAAAND hyped about Speedbo!!!

    ReplyDelete
  48. TINA, RUTHY, MISSY AND MYRA, Thanks for answering my question! All of you gave different perspectives on writing for contemporary Love Inspired. That's what I needed. And I misspoke when I said the word count. I'm not targeting Heartsong.

This year I'm handling SPEEDBO a bit differently. I will continue to edit my historical WIP (not part of SPEEDBO, but it's my priority right now), while dedicating to a SPEEDBO goal of a one hour a day (minimum 1,000 words) to writing a contemporary. I need something new to work on and I find that I have a hard time writing two historicals at the same time, so thought I'd try this as a month long experiment. Ready, set,go!

    ReplyDelete
  49. Jenna Victoria, no one has ever quoted me before. You just made my day!

    ReplyDelete
  50. Natalie Monk, I am honored you would call my words "words of wisdom". I'm just one unpublished author trying to figure it all out. I encourage you to enter Genesis. A finished MS is a HUGE accomplishment. I just finished my first draft too. Happy dance!

    ReplyDelete
  51. Great contest update Tina! I believe my contest days are behind me for the most part, but they have certainly been a help to me.

I didn't final in the First Impressions contest like some others (*ahem* Natalie--who says she didn't do well), but the feedback was certainly a boost for that project.

And Sally Bradley? Could you please name the contests you are contemplating entering so that some of us can save our money and stay away from them? Just consider it a public service. Thanks! :)

    ReplyDelete
  52. Congrats to you Contest Diva Sara!! And thank you for the extra kick in the backside to my cp Natalie. I had to read her words several times to see if she said what I thought she did. That's why I outed her about her accomplishment in First Impressions so that hopefully, she'll do what she should and enter the Genesis.

I can be a bully like that....ask Julie Hilton Steele...

    ReplyDelete
  53. Piper H., We all need a helpful "bully" sometimes to encourage us, or just give us a swift kick in the pants. One of my critique partners is like that and she's one of my favorite people in the world!

    ReplyDelete
  54. Congratulations, Sara you contest diva, you! :)

Looks like a good list of contests. I am considering the Daphne Du Maurier contest. Do you have to have a complete manuscript with that one?

I'm preparing a scene from my new WIP for the Frasier contest, hosted by My Book Therapy.

I'm hoping to stop back later and read more comments. I've been gone for the last week to a writer's retreat in FL. It was wonderful, but I feel so jet lagged! :) Playing catch up today for sure. :)

    ReplyDelete
  55. Laughing at Piper's request to Sally Bradley!!! TOO FUNNY!!!

    Lyndee, those are great goals!

Tina Marie I bet someone in Seekerville knows someone who will SHARE A CHOCOLATE SPICE ITALIAN COOKIE RECIPE WITH ME.... and oh my stars, Max....

Max Campbell the totally hot, studmuffin, adopted Latino Campbell brother from Kirkwood Lake... Max, who's been doing covert ops for this man's army for years... Max who's come home after too long away, looking for a place to SETTLE DOWN and be human again...

Max is so totally swoon-worthy as to be illegal.

    :)

    #lovethisstory !!!!

    #lovethosecookies!!!!!

    #BRAT

    ReplyDelete
  56. Did you get a lot done during your retreat, Jeanne???? Looked like FUN!!

    ReplyDelete
  57. WHAT???? Diva Piper is no longer contesting? What's new in Piper's world pray tell?

    ReplyDelete
  58. Maybe we should rename the Contest Update the DIVA/O Update.

What are all you Seekerville Diva/o's up to?

    ReplyDelete
  59. Go Speedbo racers!!!!

    ReplyDelete
  60. Thanks, Jeanne and I think that's a great idea, Tina!

    ReplyDelete
  61. Oh, my--we might have a new granddaughter later today! Daughter and SIL are at the hospital now.

And we are riding herd over the other three kids. Not sure who needs the most prayers--LOL!

    ReplyDelete
  62. I am so looking forward to the Speedbo contest. I can't wait to begin writing. This is my first time and I am ready to learn what all you great authors have to teach me. I am excited about my story.

    ReplyDelete
  63. Thank you Sara for putting the right touch on it. I don't want Natalie to think I'm being mean or anything...but I'm certainly not going to be silent about an opportunity--especially for a cp!

Maybe I should have phrased that better, Tina. I've backed off of the contesting a bit. In fact, Sally is editing my SYTYCW story that I plan to self-publish later this year. I even have a cover! Ruthy's Max sounds almost as dreamy as my hero. I'm still looking for an agent for my single-title series though, so I'm looking forward to Seekerville's contest as well. Just going a different way at this point.

  68. I'm with Jennifer Smith -- today is brainstorming and planning day. So many comments, do we take the time when we should be writing?

  69. A reading quote I came across recently on Pinterest that I love: "When you read a book as a child, it becomes a part of your identity in a way that no other reading in your whole life does." -from the movie You've Got Mail

Put me in for the giveaway please! Good luck to all you Speedbo writers!

  70. Haha! Thanks, Piper! And thanks, Sarah!

The ms that placed a final in FI wasn't my complete ms, so I can't enter it in Genesis. It was a separate entry. But I entered them both and the complete one didn't do quite as well.

However, after revising again, I'm definitely entering Genesis. :) Thank ya'll for the encouragement!

  78. I'm still on the fence about entering the Carol. I know, I know, the decision must be made soon.

My big problem is that I only have a limited number of copies of my book left, and entering the Carol would about clean me out.

(And no - I can't get more copies from Author, Author, or CBD, or Amazon...I think Barnes and Noble might have a few....)

What I learned from this? I'm asking for more author copies with my next contract, and ordering some from Author, Author as soon as my book comes out!

  79. Congratulations to Sara! What a great contest diva :)

  80. Yeah. That ALWAYS happens to me, Jan.

  81. Hello everyone. I have a question regarding contests.

I have entered one contest previously and am only working on one manuscript. If I'm going to contest, is it smart to submit the same entry to different contests? Several of the contest require the first 5 pages or the first 2500 words etc, so all my entries would be the same.

Common sense says the more feedback the better but am I missing something?

  82. Janet yes it was the physio who worked out it was the Occipital nerve that was causing my issues. She works on the neck and does help me as it is tight but it doesn't get rid of the headaches just makes helps free the neck. But thankfully I have it so much better than so many with Occipital Neuralgia many have constant headaches over 6 out of ten on a good day. Mine at present are around a 4. The meds help but I will need to go back to the level I was on before the surgery not sure I want to go to what I was on originally til I see my dr again.

  83. The more feedback the better, YES. But don't do it if the finalist judge is the same. Waste of money.

There are various reasons to enter the same msc in multiple contests:

    1. Bling prizes

    2. Financial Remuneration

    3. Exposure (your name out there)

    4. Feedback

    5. Finalist editor or agent

  86. Cheers for Contest Diva Sara Ella! And what wise words: "While the judges are all professionals, they are still just readers looking for the same thing we all look for."

One of my favorite quotes I apply to writing: "Whether you think you can or think you can't - you are right." ~Henry Ford

Congrats to all of you who have entered and are entering contests!
