NEVER TOO LATE: SPEEDBO 2014

It seems impossible that a year has flown by and in just a few days Seeker Villagers will once again launch into Seekerville’s very own “book in a month” -- Speedbo 2014!
.
Knowing that it’s on the horizon, some of you have been preparing for our write-a-thon. Perhaps you’ve fixed freezer meals, arranged for babysitting or recruited a friend or family member to lend support. Maybe you’ve scheduled 3-day weekends away from the day job for the whole month or otherwise scrutinized and cleared your March calendar as much as possible to maximize writing time.
.
You’ve possibly given great thought to the details of the story you intend to pursue, have written a detailed synopsis or a chapter-by-chapter outline to follow. Perhaps you’ve got the whole story mapped out in your head—an inciting incident, escalating tension, black moment and a happily ever after to guide you. Maybe you’re confidently starting out with only a solid goal, motivation and conflict for your characters.
.
But with only a few days remaining until kick-off, is it realistic to think that if you’ve made NO preparations whatsoever that Speedbo has anything to offer you? What if you’re only now realizing you’d like join the others who are excitedly crowded around the Speedbo starting gate? Can any good can come from attempting to participate at all? Isn’t jumping in at the midnight hour setting yourself up for failure and disappointment?
.
Not necessarily. Let’s find out why...
.
1 – Expectations. Unless you’re a chip off the old block of a few Seekers (who shall remain nameless but don't go by Glynna Kaye), starting a story from scratch on March 1 may very well not result in a completed book in four weeks. But is that such a bad thing? Isn’t making any progress a worthwhile endeavor? Set yourself a reasonable daily or weekly word count, but one that pushes you just a bit. Then set your mind on meeting that goal, recognizing how much farther along you’ll be at the month’s end than you would be if you didn’t try at all.
.
2 – Focus, Focus Focus. When I deliberately focus whatever scraps of time I can glean to immersing myself in a story, the ideas come much faster. They flow more easily as my subconscious steps in to tie together a jumble of disjointed “ideas.” We spend a lot of time thinking about nothing of importance—a lot of it negative self-talk. So in addition to carving out writing time, make a deliberate effort to think about your story when you’re fixing breakfast, showering, folding the laundry or driving to work. Then sit down to write what's in your head. Isn’t a month-long focus on your story (perhaps more attention than you’ve given it in months or even years) a worthwhile project even if you don’t write “The End”?
.
3 – Team Spirit. Take advantage of our Seekerville cheering squad—and prayer power. Long before “Seekerville: The Blog” debuted, the Seekers drew strength from knowing we weren’t alone on Unpubbed Island. There is an amazing camaraderie and sense of purpose when you know others are stretching themselves toward a dream, putting in extra effort—and praying for you to be able to do likewise. It’s almost as if the very air you breathe becomes charged with “I CAN do this, too” and you’re carried along with the momentum of others and the power of their prayers.
.
4 – Alternatives. Maybe, for whatever reason, you’re not in a place to launch into building a story’s word count. You may only have a sliver of an idea. Or no idea at all. But set a goal this month--to come up with that idea. To flesh it out with a goal, motivation and conflict that will sustain a full-length novel. Dig deep for a moral premise that will drive each scene. Perhaps target producing a synopsis to guide you in the following months or finally finishing that manuscript that’s been gathering dust on the shelf. Or revising and polishing your completed manuscript for submission. Find something to focus your writerly energies on so that at the end of the month you can still have a sense of accomplishment.
.
5 – Attitude. Vow that you will NOT beat yourself up each day if you don’t have as much time to devote to your writing as other Seeker Villagers or can’t generate as many words. We’re not all free to write twelve hours a day. Not all of us can generate 3000 words an hour. We all have jobs, families and church and community responsibilities. Perhaps there are health issues in the way or maybe you’ve scheduled a Spring Break vacation with the kids. But so what if you don’t finish a whole book in a month? If you give this write-a-thon a shot, you’ll still be farther along than you would otherwise be, right?
.
As Seeker Tina has previously pointed out, don’t rule out Speedbo even if you can’t write all day for 31 days non-stop. Work it into your schedule as best you can. Set a goal for yourself, then sign up for Speedbo 2014 and join in the fun! Make it work for YOU!

IT'S NOT TOO LATE!
.
Today please share with us in the comments section what’s holding YOU back from signing up for Speedbo—then let’s see if our fellow Seeker Villagers can help you come up with ideas for a realistic obstacle “work around.” Be open minded to suggestions. Expect to find at least one idea that will settle into your heart as a possibility, one that will grab your imagination and motivate you throughout the month.
.
If you’ve already signed up for Speedbo, share with us what compelled you to do so? What are your hopes for the coming month? What have you done to get ready? What obstacles do you foresee that will need to be overcome? Do you need help brainstorming strategies to do so?
.
Okay! Ready...set...GO SPEEDBO!

.
No Place Like Home. Abby Diaz longs to reestablish a relationship with her father, so she heads to Canyon Springs, her Arizona hometown, with a painful past she can’t share with anyone. But then she’s needed to care for her young nephew. The little boy takes a shine to a happy-go-lucky cowboy, a handsome man who’s everything Abby can never have. The more time she spends with Brett, the more she realizes he’s harboring a heartache of his own. As she works on repairing family ties with her father, Abby knows that opening up to Brett is key to forging a new future...together.
.
Glynna Kaye’s debut book “Dreaming of Home” was a finalist in the ACFW Carol and Maggie awards, as well as a first place winner of the “Booksellers Best” and “Beacon” awards. Her 4 1/2 star “At Home In His Heart” was chosen as a Reviewers Choice finalist by national magazine RT Book Reviews. “Pine Country Cowboy,” her seventh Love Inspired book (and the sixth set in the mountain country of Arizona), releases April 2014--with a Christmas story coming out in November 2014!

  1. Hey, Seekers! I'm still debating whether or not I can do Speedbo. Since I'm prepping for my debut, writing guest blogs, dealing with a family illness, pulling Romper Room duty, schooling the kid... I'm doing good to remember my name. Plus I still have one book I have to finish and send in. I'll know by the end of the day what, if any, my goals are for March.

  2. Welcome, from one of the cheering crowd. Yes, Glynna, I would be honored to have my name in the dish for your book
And know that I will be praying for those of you involved in Speedbo. Anything in particular? And no, I won't expect to see you until you come up for air the beginning of April! Looking forward to those finished novels!

  3. *gulp*

Call us crazy but we signed up yesterday.

Glynna, this is a wonderful post, just what I needed! No excuses, just need to get to work on May 4. Must really think about what I want to accomplish and your post has given me excellent ideas on how to do that!

Thanks Marianne, for offering to pray! I for one appreciate it much!

Christina - hear ya... Gonna do it anyway... :)

  4. Um, I'm signed up, want to finish 15 chapters. What's my motivation? A deadline. What's my obstacle? A certain 20 pound 5 month old, who happens to be why I haven't already finished those 15 chapters. And the fact that I HATES the rough draft. I lervs the editing, but hates the filling the blank page part. If I got hives, this is what gives me hives. When people say, "I bet you just love writing" or something to that effect, they seem to have no words when I say, "Nope, hate it." But then who else is going to write the things in my head???

  6. I signed up for Speedbo because I need the challenge and my word this year is 'dedication'. I need to push myself harder and stretch myself. What better way than Speedbo, right?

Glynna, I would love to be entered to win a copy of your book.

    Smiles & Blessings,
    Cindy W.

  7. I'm NOT signing up, but I'll be cheering for everyone and praying hard!
I was already dragging right about Dec. 2013 and when I reached my last deadline Feb 14th, I knew I needed to take some time to just... do nothing.
I've published/written/turned in 10 full length books in 10 months while taking a 6 month long intensive writing course with Franny Billingsley... while homeschooling six kids (youngest 3), blogging, marketing, etc.
I miss painting. I miss cooking something more than "five minute meals". I miss going to sleep at ten pm and not 4AM. LOL.
So, although I have a weird suspicion that I won't be lounging around for a long time, I'm determined to do something else for a little while. I'm going to paint my kitchen cabinets a dark teal, build some built-in bookcases in the living room, and run a car-seat drive for needy families. That should take at least a week or two!!
Good luck everybody and looking forward to hearing all the progress!

  8. Hi all, I will be on the sidelines cheering for you all and offering cyber meals etc.

Thanks also to all the seeker family who sent me good wishes for today. Its been amazing (who would have thought turn 50 would be so rewarding!). I have flowers, balloons, cake and money and cards. lovely cards.
    And an amazing album.

    Please enter me.

  9. Good morning, CHRISTINA! Sounds as if you have a lot on your plate for March! Maybe finishing the book this month would be a good SPEEDBO project! My own goal is to finish my next proposal draft (if edits & galleys don't arrive on my doorstep!).

    ReplyDelete
  10. Hello, MARIANNE! Thank you for cheering on and praying for the Speedbo-ers! Maybe this month will produce some new books for you to read NEXT spring! :)

  11. KC & MAY -- Good for the two of you for signing up yesterday! And I'm glad the post gave you some creative ways to approach the coming month. Make it work for YOU! I haven't prepped as much for it as I'd have liked to, but I did manage to do a couple of cook-a-thon nights last week for freezer meals! :)

  12. I'm doing Speedbo this year for a couple of reasons.

I started a story last summer but left it after ACFW when two agents asked for proposals on two different stories. Getting those ready finished off 2013. This year I've been entering contests. Through all of this I worked on a suspense with a heroin thread. I decided it was depressing me. So I want to go back and finish the story from last summer.

Speedbo goal? Finish The Bye Way Inn.

It's almost here, and I'm so excited!

  13. Wow, MELISSA! 15 chapters! Blank pages are often the hardest for me, too--love the revision, layering, polishing stuff best as that's when the story most comes alive for me. I can usually fly through the opening chapters and the final ones, but it's that muddled middle that's the biggest challenge for me--and where I pull the most hair out. :)

    ReplyDelete
  14. Good morning, CINDY W! Yes, I'd say signing up for Speedbo would be a great step in your "one word" -- dedication! I can already feel the energy building here--and it's so great that this year's kick-off day is a Saturday!

    ReplyDelete
  15. Hello, VIRGINIA! Yes, I'd say you definitely deserve a rest!! You need to recharge those creative batteries and catch up on REAL LIFE! Your projects sound very worthwhile and restorative--but don't forget to REST. Enjoy your break to the max. We can ALWAYS use cheerleaders and prayer warriors during Speedbo!

    ReplyDelete
  16. HI, JENNY! Prayers and cyber food are ALWAYS welcome -- Thank you! And HAPPY BIRTHDAY! It sounds as if you're ringing in the Big 5-0 in style!

    ReplyDelete
  17. Good morning, JACKIE! Sounds as if you have a great Speedbo goal and a story that won't depress you as Spring peeks out (hopefully!) by the end of March in some parts of the country!

  18. I admire all you guys who have signed up for Speedbo 2014. Good luck to each and all!

Maybe next year for me—I knew I didn't have time this go-round.

  19. Ever since we started Speedbo three years ago, and Mary Connealy came up with that (funky) name, I am forced to think of Mr. Gadget and GO GO GADGET, but instead I think GO GO SPEEDBO.

Okay, that was your random Tina brain thought for the day. Carry on.

  20. Glynna,

Great post to the rally the crowd.

    Were you a cheerleader? : )

  21. Glynna,

Great post to the rally the crowd.

    Were you a cheerleader? : )

    ReplyDelete
  22. Good morning, MARY H! I totally understand the "no time" this round. But we'll take all the cheerleaders we can get! I'm not sure how much I'll get done as my edits/AAs for my November book will very likely land in March. That always trips up my best intentions. :)

    ReplyDelete
  23. Hey, TINA! Thank you for sharing that random brain thought for the day! :) Is Phoenix supposed to get any rain out of that wet front moving in from the Pacific? We sure can use whatever moisture we can get here in the mountains. After a record-tying summer monsoon season, we went for a 40-day stretch with NO snow or rain this winter while the rest of the country has been constantly shoveling snow. The forest is desperate for a drink, so hopefully we'll get a good soaking.

  24. Hi, Rose! Actually, I WAS a cheerleader -- IN SIXTH GRADE in a teeny tiny farming/mining community in the Midwest where ALL the 6th grade girls were drafted to cheer the 6th grade boys basketball team. We had cute purple (with gold lining)skirts that "twirled," white shirts, and purple & gold pom poms on our shoes. But that was the extent of my cheerleading experience. :)

    ReplyDelete
  25. Glynna, love your cheerleader post! I hope it encourages all those who hesitate to give Speedbo a try. Join the team and commit to a month of as much productivity as life permits.

    Janet

  26. Great encouragment, Glynna! Heaven only knows you have more than enough on your plate.

Sign up for Speedbo. Yes, you can do it. Yes, we can help! Goals, no matter how small are the building blocks of the big picture.

I have a family, and a day job, and A BOOK COMING OUT IN MARCH...but I will also be there for Speedbo. No better way to find, and dig down into, my groove than writing and cheering on my favorite Villagers!!!

    Go, Speedbo!!

    ReplyDelete
  27. Marianne, the world needs many more cheerleaders like you : )

    Thanks for your prayers!!

    ReplyDelete
  28. OKay GLYNNA, You nailed me. I wasn't going to join for all those reasons and excuses you exposed. sigh

So I will join because I do need to get started on that story I went to Spain for.

And I'll be finished with my revisions today hopefully for LOVE'S PROMISES coming out next month.

Thank you girlfriend for the kick in the behind. smile

    ReplyDelete
  29. Melissa - did you say 15 chapters?

Okay, girlfriend, prayers are all over you and your 20lb bundle of joy!!

    ReplyDelete
  30. Hey I hope we do get some rain. We really do need it.

TINA. You are toooooo funny. Now I have that going in my head. Go Go Speedbo. sigh I guess that is a good thing.

VIRGINIA you enjoy that break. You deserve it. Remember what I wrote last month. God needed a day of rest. So do we. smile

But I think I've been taking tooo many. lol

    ReplyDelete
  31. Virginia...did you say 10 novels in 10 months??? And homeschooling?

    Oh, I'm such a slacker!

My prayers are with YOU!! Rest up and enjoy painting, cooking ... and sleeping!!!

    ReplyDelete
  32. Good morning, JANET! Yes, the more the merrier! It really makes for a motivating dynamic when you know that others across the country (around the world!) are joining in for the month and cheering each other on.

    ReplyDelete
  33. YAY AUDRA! I can hardly wait to get your book!

    ReplyDelete
  34. GLYNNA it just amazes me when I read your Seventh Love Inspired is releasing. You are a testimony and inspiration to all of us. I don't know anyone with a busier work schedule, yet you still manage all those novels. woo hoo girl. Go girl go.

    ReplyDelete
  35. HI SANDRA! Glad you'll be joining in on the fun--and getting that book of your heart started! Hope you can get your revisions on the other book done before March 1 so you can launch out with the fresh new story!

    ReplyDelete
  36. I would love to be entered in the drawing.

I signed up for Speedbo because I WANT and NEED to make some progress on my novel!!!

I was a little hesitant to sign up. I know the same obstacles that have kept me from making much progress thus far will continue to do so. :P I have two toddlers (one of my own and one I babysit), I write Sunday school curriculum (with deadlines!), I'm committed to doing book reviews, and I tend to have a compulsion to clean the house before I can focus on writing. :) But my dream is to get this novel finished, and I'm determined to somehow make it happen!

My goal for Speedbo is just to make some good headway on starting my latest rewrite.

Good luck to all the rest of you participating. :)

    ReplyDelete
  37. Well, gosh, Glynna ... I don't know about everybody else, but you sure motivated me -- God's truth!!

This is the first year I've done Speedbo (okay, I may have signed up once in the past, I think, but something got in the way like edits or galleys on my next book, which blew it for me). So I hope to put my heart and soul into it this year, and you certainly helped with this blog, which says it's okay to be interrupted (uh ... expecting edits on my next book this week as we speak) because "making any progress" IS a "worthwhile endeavor!!

Thanks for the great motivation this morning and GO, SPEEDBO!!

    Hugs,
    Julie

    ReplyDelete
  38. Good for you, JENNIFER, on jumping in to Speedbo 2014! I'm amazed at how you mom's with kids still at home manage to write ANYTHING! You're my heroes, that's for certain!

    ReplyDelete
  39. YAY, JULIE! Yes, ANY progress is farther down the road than we currently are. Standing on the brink of March there are all sorts of good things awaiting us and our writing!

    ReplyDelete
  40. MELISSA-- I love this. . When people say, "I bet you just love writing" or something to that effect, they seem to have no words when I say, "Nope, hate it." I can so relate.

I entered the Killer Voices contest. By Friday I will have a rough draft of the synopsis and my first 3 chapters. (This is in case I make it to the next couple of stages of the contest.) During Speedbo I'd like to get the whole thing on paper. I've never written that fast, so if I get 30k on paper, I'll feel successful. But I'd REALLY like to finish it.

    ReplyDelete

  41. A week ago, I attended the funeral of a 95 year old really neat woman. One of the stories told by her grandson was that when he was going to quit college, she told him, "Well, if you want it bad enough, you'll find a way." He went on to finish his education.

    Cheering everyone on from Texas.

    ReplyDelete
  42. CONNIE -- Congrats on entering the contest and finishing up drafts of the proposal chapters and the synopsis! Wishing you the very best as you launch out to get the rest of it drafted during Speedbo!

    ReplyDelete
  43. CONNIE -- I like your friend's wisdom and how it motivated her grandson to find that "way." :)

    ReplyDelete
  44. JULIE, Glynna got to me too. I am going to sign up. Like you, I did once before but so much stuff came up I gave up. But really I did get more writing done than I would have. So we can't lose. smile

    Thanks GLYNNA

    ReplyDelete
  45. Inspiring and motivational post, Glynna! I signed up and hope to make significant progress on my current wip.

Of course, any day now we'll have the "interruption" of a new granddaughter's arrival. But so far this winter I've managed to get some writing done even with her 3-year-old sister racing around the house and screaming at the top of her lungs (egged on by her big brother and sister, naturally).

    New babies sleep a lot . . . right???

    ReplyDelete
  46. Well I am going to enter and FINISH the draft of the novel I started for NANO. Between the two promotions, I'm sure it will get done.
I didn't see anything about food, so I brought yummy maple-walnut bars! In honor of maple season is starting in NH and Vermont. I don't make good coffee so I brought a Box of Joe from Dunkin' Donuts, a carafe of hot water and a selection of teas including Earl Grey, English Breakfast and Irish Breakfast.
    Off to sign up,
    Kathy Bailey

  47. Hi Glynna and All,

My setup is better this year than at any time. Since this is the second in a series, the characters are well developed. I have every scene outlined. The first 80 or so pages are done as well as the black moment and resolution. I have a cooperative husband, although I've promised him one day since our anniversary is in March. Only problem is my daily word count is rarely over 1000, and I'll need about 1500.

Happy Birthday Jenny. 50 is the new 30.

    ReplyDelete
  48. It's never too late to get on board.

    ReplyDelete
  49. Lovin' these comments.

And YES, Virginia... Gracious. How does she do it? I don't think she sleeps at all. (We love teal - need photos! Wonderful for the car seat drive too. Once again, you amaze me.)

Yay for Tina brain thoughts. Random acts of kindness I'd say... Or kicks in the patootie, take your pick.

Sandra, I'm with you. Looking at everyone else's situations, and how they are still producing... I'm a slacker. Better get back into the groove.

Great post Glynna, 6th grade cheerleading experience or not. Must be like riding a bicycle?!

Stay warm, y'all. The icy wind is pummeling the window screens here in middle TN. BRRRRRR.

    ReplyDelete
  50. Oh, and you asked what problems did we foresee.

    Spring break.

We always try to do something w/the kids, even for just a day or two. I've just have to get up earlier or stay up later so my story doesn't lose momentum. At least we don't have a whole week's vacation planned.

    ReplyDelete
  51. Hi Glynna,

Great motivation to enter Speedbo and so logically laid out!

I have entered mainly to keep momentum on a story I started at the beginning of January and then stopped to work on edits of other books. But this will force me to focus a little time each day on my new story and keep moving forward!

I love the cover of your new book!

Happy Birthday, Jenny!! Hope this year is your best yet!

Virginia, I don't know how you do it. Even your time off sounds exhausting! LOL.

    Take care
    Sue

  52. Can SpeedBo be used for editing instead of writing, as that's what I need to focus on?

    ReplyDelete
  53. I jumped the gun a bit. February has been more like my Speedbo, but I'm hoping my pace will continue through March. I need to polish my entry for the Genesis contest as well as the LIS Search for a Killer Voice, and polishing seems to be an entirely different endeavor. It's important, but it prevents putting many words on the page.

I appreciate the great tips here, especially the encouragement that even if we don't finish a whole manuscript, we'll still have more than when we started. That's so logical, yet it takes some doing for it to sink in. :-) I would love to be entered in the drawing. Thanks!

  57. MEGHAN good for you. You're ahead of the game and already have your momentum. Yay. Go go go

  58. I signed up on Monday and I still think I was nuts to do it. I need 12 extra hours in a day just for doing the extra stuff which includes writing; I envy (uh-oh!) people who can accomplish so much in a 24-hour day, but maybe they don't really sleep? (Thinking of Ruthy and Virginia...) Last year I hadn't written in years; this year I can say I last wrote within the past year but it's been a low priority amongst other stuff. But instead of pulling out something to rework as I did last March, I'm going in full-pantser with an idea I had a few years ago. Now to figure out my goal for the month...

    Happy Birthday, Jenny!

Would love to have my name tossed in the dish/Stetson/what-have-you to win your book, Glynna! Thanks!

Blessings to everyone, whether you sign up or not! :)

I have signed up for speedbo, and I'm looking forward to it.
    Happy birthday Jenny!

  60. I'm excited about Speedbo!!! The only bad thing is that I will probably get my initial big edits during March, which will really slow me down. Still, I'm going to make the most of whatever time I get. I sat in the doctor's office yesterday and the hospital imaging center this morning with one of my daughters, and I spent the time alternately reading a book about characterization and brainstorming and making notes about my hero. So I am getting ready!!! I'm just about to the point where I can dive in. Yay! So excited about this new story.

    ReplyDelete
  61. Happy Birthday, Jenny!

I've brought birthday cakes...plural! Red Velvet, German Chocolate, Death by Chocolate (YUM!), Carrot, Spice, and more. Plus an assortment of ice cream!!!

    Cutting Jenny's slice first.

    Enjoy!

  62. Glynna, I love all your Arizona books since my daughter went to college in Flagstaff! I love that area of Arizona! We used to live in Tucson and that was just too hot for me but I loved the northern part of the state! That's why I love the setting of your books there! I also love your books, period! Please put me in the drawing for your newest book! Can't wait for it to come out!

    ReplyDelete
  63. Okay, Glynna, this is what I've decided; since I only have a few thousand words to finish my book, I'll complete that, write a synopsis for a proposal that's ready and then the first three chapters and synopsis for the next book in my Greek series. So that's, 4,000 words to finish book, three chapters on the next book and 2 synopses. That's totally doable, right?

    ReplyDelete
  64. Waving to Melissa! I can relate to not enjoying the first-draft creation process. I always struggle much too long with the first three chapters and breathe a big sigh of relief when I have a rough draft with which to work.

Saw comments from two other authors yesterday who said almost the same thing you did today. They don't enjoy the process in the initial getting-words-on-paper/computer screen stage.

Nice to know we're not alone. :)

Hugs to you and sweet baby!

  65. I signed up for Speedbo last week, so I've been spending this week clearing my plate of other stuff (upcoming blog posts, talking to my family, dusting....).

My goal is to finish my WIP, and the word count will really stretch me past what I've ever done before. But I need to finish it, and this is a good time to do it.

Will be cheering everyone on as we go!

    ReplyDelete
  66. Happy Birthday Jenny!!!!

Glynna, please put my name in the draw.

I've entered SPEEDBO in the hope of establishing DISCIPLINE (my one word) to write everyday even if it is just one sentence. I need to establish a HABIT. If a complete MS shows up...bonus. (not that I'm expecting THAT.)I'm signed up with no plan as of yet - well, two story ideas I'm trying to choose between.

    I'm a mess...

    ReplyDelete
  67. HAPPY BIRTHDAY, JENNY!!! Hope it's the BEST ever!!

LOL ... AUDRA'S RESPONSE TO VIRGINIA:

"Virginia...did you say 10 novels in 10 months??? And homeschooling? Oh, I'm such a slacker!"

LOL ... my thoughts exactly, Auds!! ;)

Virginia, you are a one-woman dynamo, NO QUESTION!!

    HUGS,

  68. With my book debut falling right at the beginning of March, I questioned whether to do Speedbo. There's no way I can do a full book in a month. Since I'm at the very beginning of a new one, I decided that a reasonable goal for me would be a write three chapters and a synopsis for the rest of the book. And I signed up.

    ReplyDelete
  69. Good luck to all you fabulous authors working on the Speedbo challenge! Please put me in for the giveaway! :)

    ReplyDelete
  70. HELEN, three chapters and a synopsis can be a big enough challenge all by itself!

What I like about Speedbo is that even if I don't get an entire book written (which isn't likely, in my case!), I'm putting forth that extra little bit of concentration and making the effort.

Besides, it's fun knowing there's a bunch of us all churning out the words together and cheering each other on!

    ReplyDelete
  71. Congrats for being brave enough to sign up, Myra! That's quite the challenge with a 3-year-old on the rampage! :)

    ReplyDelete
  72. KATHY B - good luck with finishing your draft! SPEEDBO is the perfect follow-up to NANO! And thank you for remembering to feed us today! :)

    ReplyDelete
  73. ELAINE--it sounds as if you're well-prepared to launch out into Speedbo in just a few days! Just a tiny bit of a stretch and I bet you can make that hoped-for 1500 a day!

    ReplyDelete
  74. LYNDEE -- That single word "ready" says SO much! Wishing you the very best in Speedbo!

    ReplyDelete
  75. CONNIE -- I'm sure Spring Break will be something to contend with for quite a few Seeker Villagers. Kids off. Family vacations planned. It sounds as though you have some strategies thought out to help keep up your momentum. But enjoy the family time, too!

    ReplyDelete
  76. Hey, Susan! Glad you like the cover. Get our your magnifying glass, though--the hero is REALLY cute. I'd sell a lot more of 'Pine Country Cowboy' if they'd have done a "close up." :)

I totally understand getting thrown off when edits arrive--happens EVERY time when I'm getting into the groove on the next book. Hopefully Speedbo can help you get back in the saddle!

    ReplyDelete
  77. YEP, Walt! Editing is fine. Make Speedbo be what YOU need it to be to reach your month's goal. I'm primarily going to be focusing on completing a synopsis.

    ReplyDelete
  78. Hi, MEGHAN! It sounds as if you have several goals for this Speedbo month! Just think what accomplishments 31 days of FOCUS can deliver!

    ReplyDelete
  79. Hello, MELANIE! I hear ya on the need for more hours in the day. I wish I could clone myself--one to do the cooking & housecleaning & laundry, another to keep up with exercise and take care of the day job, another to do writing-related stuff, another who gets to sleep--and one who gets to WRITE! :) Hope you have a FABULOUSLY FUN month of pantsering!!

    ReplyDelete
  80. Yeppers, I'm in for Speedbo. :-) I've learned lots of neat stuff in Ruthy's online class so I feel I'm more prepared then ever.

I've been revisiting a series of sermons from 2012 about The Circle Maker based on the book by Mark Patterson. I'm determined to circle my speedbo objectives in prayer every day. I know that will help me keep focused and tough it through the hard spots.

Oh -- and love the cover too. :-)

    ReplyDelete
  81. Hi, CRYSTAL! Congrats on signing up for Speedbo! I think this is going to be a really hardworking, productive bunch in March! But hopefully we can make it FUN, too!

    ReplyDelete
  82. HAPPY Birthday to Jenny!

I would love to be in the drawing for your book, Glynna!

    ReplyDelete
  83. MELANIE D - Sorry you had to spend time attending to medical things with your daughter, but it sounds as if you made good use of your waiting room time. It's always such a good feeling with a brand new story to tell! And maybe our edits will be late...?

    ReplyDelete
  84. Hi, DEBBY! Thanks for bringing birthday edibles! I LOVE red velvet cake!

    ReplyDelete
  85. Hello, VALRI! Good to see you here! I'm so happy you're still enjoying my books! I love the Arizona mountain country setting of my fictional Canyon Springs, too. I almost feel like its a REAL place! :) Until I moved to Arizona, I had NO IDEA there was a totally different part of the state that is all about mountains and snow and forests and cool summers where people don't even have air conditioners in their homes! I think there's only about one or two weeks a year when I think "it might be nice to turn on some AC" and that's in late June or early July right before the monsoon season starts. Beautiful country and I can see why your daughter chose NAU!

    ReplyDelete
  86. CHRISTINA R -- That sounds like a good plan! If you pull all that off in month, you'll be WAY ahead of ME!! :)

    ReplyDelete
  87. Hello, JAN! Sounds like you've been doing some prep work to make maximum good use of your Speedbo time! S-t-r-e-t-c-h-i-n-g ourselves over the next month is what it's all about!

    ReplyDelete
  88. DebH -- establishing a routine, a discipline of writing sounds like a perfect plan for our Speedbo month. Sometimes when we focus on something, really put our mind to it for a given period of time, we can surprise ourselves that the habit gets ingrained and carries on beyond the "allotted" time.

    ReplyDelete
  89. HELEN -- 3 chapters and a synopsis is ideal! That's what I'm going to push myself toward, too. May get tricky if edits/AAs arrive, but I'll do my best and try to stretch myself. The days getting longer will really help as I'm super solar-powered. Wish Arizona would go on Daylight Saving Time, too, though as I could sure use an extra hour in the evening!

    ReplyDelete
  90. Hi, KAV! Congrats for signing on for Speedbo! Wish I could have taken Ruthy's class, too! She's REALLY enjoyed teaching it. That "Circle Maker" sounds like a book I'll need to check out, too!

    ReplyDelete
  91. Well, I have to step out for a bit--but will be back in a few hours!

So exciting to think we're only a few days from SPEEDBO!

    ReplyDelete
  92. Oh I love red velvet cake almost as much as black Forrest cake (which my friends surprised me with yesterday).

Thanks for all the birthday wishes. I had a wonderful day which will be a week! another lunch with a friend Saturday. Its the best birthday ever and its a new year! yes I still have my headache issue but I am doing so much better in all other health issues. as long as I can walk and ride I can cope. (remind me to look at the album or hope (the plaque) if I start to sound discouraged).

    Once again thanks to everyone.

    ReplyDelete
  93. Happy birthday, Jenny!!!! God bless you, my friend, and I'm just delighted to see you looking so good! YAYAYAYAYAYA!

    Speedbo: I'm ready.

I have my plan for what I must get done, my plan for what I want to get done and my dream of what could get done if the world stopped turning for 30 days and people left me alone.

    So the mental component: DONE!!!!

    Food?

Blech, who needs food. I refuse to cook anymore unless it's a crock pot, I just figure if I was working at an away job, no one would expect me to cook while I'm there, so I don't fret about it and neither one of us has starved.

Laundry: I've recently become aware that 3 day jeans are much more comfortable than dryer-fresh jeans, and so I'm wearing my jeans for WEEKS to keep them the most comfortable ever.

    Time for day job.

    Time for church and choir.

    Time to write.

And birthday parties, we have a gazillion little birthdays in spring, so I'll take time for those and buy cool presents and make cakes, etc.

But only because these kids are so stinkin' cute!

    SPEEDBO: BRING IT!!!

    ReplyDelete
  94. Virginia, I love seeing how your life has changed, turned upside down, inside out, and yet you still have the same take-charge and breathe personality!

I love that my kids are older now, because they're crazy helpful as they watch my career unfold. (They stay close to the checkbook that way.)

So it's a team-building family project, week by week as we go, and that's got a nice old-fashioned ring to it!

    LOVE IT!

Virginia, take some time to breathe and plan the next course of action. You've earned it!

    ReplyDelete
  95. Well, I wasn't planning to do Speedbo, although it kept popping into my mind. I've been going through some personal issues/decisions that have slowed me down where writing is concerned. We also have a family visitor for the first two weeks of March.

HOWEVER, this post made me really, really want to go for it. And I do have a novella idea that's been playing around in my brain.

So I might make a daily word goal. Like you said, Glynna, even a small goal is more than I would be getting done otherwise. I think that's the best argument there is in favor of doing it...

    ReplyDelete
  96. So glad you're having a wonderful birthday celebration, JENNY!

And also thankful you have been feeling better! Enjoy your cake!

    ReplyDelete
  97. I'm in - signed up for SPEEDBO as I've already sent in my first manuscript page to the Love Inspired Suspense #killervoices search going on now. Next stage if I make it through is a synopsis and then first three chapters, polished like a shiny new penny, so revving up my dormant writing engine.

  98. I like your new photo JENNY.

Glad you had a great birthday. Aren't birthdays fun?

Especially when forest cake is involved. yum

    ReplyDelete
  99. WEll I see GLYNNA had a fun lunch break catching up on all the great comments.

    Go Glynna.

And thanks again for the motivation today. Looks like you getting a lot of folk inspired.

    ReplyDelete
  100. RUTHY I love that your kids are seeing the fruits of all those years of hard work and dedication. And I love that they are supporting you and cheering you on.

    Way to go girlfriend.

    ReplyDelete
  101. YAY Victoria and Jenna

    Go for it.

    GLYNNA got to me too.

    Yay speedbo

  102. Happy Birthday, Jenny! Black forest cake ... yum! Those friends know a good cake :-)

  103. SPEEDBO is the best. Last year it enabled me to finish the first draft of a novella ... and to see where it needs major work. But that was progress.

This year for SPEEDBO I'm deep-editing my second historical. And if I finish that before the end of Speedbo, I'll be going back to the first historical and cutting it down to novella size in preparation for self publishing.

    Nancy C

    ReplyDelete
  104. And thanks ahead of time to the SPEEDBO CHEERING SECTION. Looking forward to your support and encouragement!

  105. I signed up for Speedbo because I need to jumpstart my writing. I was doing great the first few weeks of 2014...then got bogged down with work projects...then got sick...now hubby and I are looking for a house....

But I need to reintegrate a solid writing schedule into my routine again. I need to finish polishing a draft I've had for a year a half. I'd love to keep writing on a new story, but hubby has convinced me that I should probably work on the draft that I've had two agents request manuscripts for, than just sitting on it. He's right, as usual (don't tell him that!).

So, my Speedbo goal is to finish polishing that draft by the end of March, and then I can write on the new story!

And please include me in the drawing :)

    ReplyDelete
  106. I wish I could because I love the feeling of pouring out a new story!
I hope someone who isn't sure...will give it a try!

(I have a story I have to finish first! it's all good, right?)

    ReplyDelete
  107. LOL, Glynna! I'm afraid I'm not one of the Seekers who can write an entire book in a month, but I can sure start one and make progress if I try hard enough!

    ReplyDelete
  108. DEBRA, To finish that novel can be your Speedbo goal. This is individual so make it what you need it to be.
I think finishing a manuscript is a monumental goal.

    Go girl.

    ReplyDelete
  109. Yay CARA, That is what I plan to do. No way can I finish this one in a month, but getting started will be a big boost for me.

    ReplyDelete
  110. YAY STEPHANIE QUEEN. I think you will be happy you joined. It is a great motivator as GLYNNA said.

She's already motivated me. And I needed it. smile

    ReplyDelete
  111. Glenna- great post. Very motivating. And, I agree that any progress is good progress.

I can't say I'm ready for Speedbo. I've never even done Nanowrimo. I'm not a fast writer period.

However, I signed up because I only have two months to write novella #2, which I've barely put thought into, and I still have a suspense story I'd like to continue working on. Ambitious, I know. I'm hoping Speedbo will supply that needed motivation when I'm too tired to think.

That being said my goal is to get as much of that written as possible, get #1 off by 3/6, and try to add some additional chapters to the suspense. (Who needs the day job, right? LOL) I definitely need prayer and cheerleaders over the month of March.

    ReplyDelete
  112. Ok, technically it's 10 novels in 12 months, since I just turned in the third Austen book (#3!). So, from Feb 2013 to Feb 214 I self published six (two already written), traditionally published one (LI, but it was written the year before) and wrote another four (turned in two, so have two waiting to be decided on how they'll be published).
I was writing 3500-4K words a day and in the beginning it was 1k1hr. But as the year went on, I got more and more tired. This last book ended up close to 1k for every TWO HOURS. So, my 4K a day was 8 hours of nighttime writing. I had to start going to the library for two hours in the evening when hubby came home, and then waiting until kids were asleep, and then writing from 10-4.
So, I'm excited to be working with my hands (not on a keyboard)for a while, and recharging those writing brain cells! I DO LOVE writing (my stories, not other people's ideas of my story) and I'm SOOO excited to write more books!! But... I need to just be another kind of creative for a while.

Praying that everyone had a super productive Speedbo!! I'll be over here with my painting clothes on and a big mug of tea, sending virtual hugs and cookies!!

    ReplyDelete
  113. JENNY -- So happy you had a wonderful birthday! And that you're gradually starting to feel better after your surgery. I think you're going to have a great year ahead of you!

    ReplyDelete
  114. RUTHY -- Sounds as if you're all set for Speedbo!! Are you starting something new or finishing up your December book?

    ReplyDelete
  115. VICTORIA - it will be tricky with company there for a few weeks, but I bet if you put your mind to it you can carve out a little writing time for your novella and have FUN doing it, too!

    ReplyDelete
  116. JENNA--congrats on entering the contest AND for signing up for Speedbo! An exciting month ahead!

    ReplyDelete
  117. NANCY C -- those are fabulous, concrete goals for your Speedbo month! I like your optimistic attitude that if you get one thing done, you already have another goal lined up to follow!

    ReplyDelete
  118. Hi, STEPHANIE! Speedbo will be perfect to help you get back into the writing routine. And I think that's a wonderful idea to polish up a manuscript that AGENTS are interested in! Then while you wait to hear back from them you can launch into the next one!

    ReplyDelete
  119. DEBRA--Finishing a book is every bit as exciting as starting a new one! (Although I'm usually a WHOLE LOT more tired when I type THE END than when I wrote that opening line!)

    ReplyDelete
  120. CARA -- I hope you get the opportunity to start that new story this month! Like you, I WON'T be writing one from beginning to end in March, but hopefully we can both get a good start!

    ReplyDelete
  121. I'm in - SPEEDBO 2014!

    ReplyDelete
  122. Hello, DIANA! And congrats on stepping out into Speedbo! I've never done NANO either and my Speedbo months are usually for "customized" goals (pesky day job!). But it sound as if you have a great plan for the month to write that novella, and we'll all be cheering each other on!

    ReplyDelete
  123. Man, VIRGINIA! No wonder you're worn out and looking for a recharge! 10 novels in 12 months still boggles my mind. And there is NO WAY I could write 8 hours at night! I hope the coming month will be very restorative.

    ReplyDelete
  124. WOW! We're only 2 days away from kick-off! We all have high hopes for what we want to accomplish, have plans to stretch ourselves just a little more than we think we can.

Remember, though, that as Seeker Villagers begin to report in where they are in word counts or hours of writing, do NOT get down on yourself if you're not right up there where a few others may be.

Yes, it's okay to let someone else's achievements spur you on, to make you write a little faster, write a little longer. But don't beat yourself up and let it DEmotivate you, okay? This is NOT a competition, it's a team effort to cheer each other on to do our best.

If you stick with this all month, you'll be farther along than you would be if you didn't give it a shot, right?

    BUT REMEMBER--FOCUS ON THE FUN!

    ReplyDelete
  125. I'm late! But I'm not late for Speedbo. I signed up! I'll be starting with revisions and then will march ahead. :)

    ReplyDelete
  126. Happy happy birthday Jenny!

Melissa - loved your comment! Sometimes I think I'm crazy to keep writing, but I can't give it up.

Virginia - I am in awe. And your time off sounds exhausting to me. Although I would love to paint my cabinets. Make sure you get a little lazy time.

I signed up for Speedbo tonight. My goal is 23,000 words. Good luck to everyone!

    ReplyDelete
  127. I'm coming in late and haven't read most of these comments. I couldn't find the link to sign up for Speedbo. How do you sign up?

  139. I'm in, with a goal to complete requested full for Love Inspired that's been hanging around unfinished too long. I emailed the editor and told her it would be subbed by 31 March, so I need to honor that! 20,000 words and a lot of revising to do! I'm also working on an entry for the Love Inspired Suspense Killer Voices contest.

Thanks so much for organising this! I'll be praying for all the entrants to meet their goals, and for all who didn't feel they could join this year too.

    ReplyDelete
  140. AUTUMN -- thanks for joining us for Speedbo! Your goal to get that requested story finished and ready for submission is a perfect one to keep you motivated and moving!

    ReplyDelete
  141. Okay, I may be out of my mind, but I'm giving it a try. :) I sent in my e-mail, do I need to post a goal anywhere? My GOAL is to have a perfect, completed error-free award worthy manuscript finished by the end of March. (snort, snicker - ahem.)

Realistically, I'd just like to have my first draft done that I don't hate.
