We'd like to introduce our July Contest Divas. Yes, two. The writing team of
Crystal Ridgway & Destanie Ridgway!

2014 ACFW Genesis double semi-finalists
Seekerville Perfect Pitch winner

Writing as a team has been a blessing but it’s also had a few pitfalls. Contests have been one of them. The first contest we entered was the 2014 ACFW Genesis. Right off we ran into problems. We got an email from ACFW saying we’d done something wrong, that the photo was supposed to be of the author alone. After explaining that we coauthor, we were told not to enter any more manuscripts until they got their system fixed to accept coauthors. Seven manuscripts later, we had all our entries in.

Having only started writing seven months before our first contest, we entered our manuscripts with the sole purpose of getting feedback- although hope was running high.

When the day came for the semi-finalists to be announced we sat by the phone. Two calls later we were thrilled to hear that we’d semi-finaled twice. That was on Monday. On Saturday we got an email saying Crystal Ridgway was one of five winners in the Seekerville Perfect Pitch contest.

Contests have been a wonderful tool that has gotten us feedback, validated our opinion that our stories are worth writing, and given us hope that we might make it into print. We are planning to enter all our completed stories in the ACFW First Impressions contest when it opens and will most likely enter a few more.

As relatively new writers, we are finding the feedback invaluable. That alone has made entering contests worth every agonizing moment of the long wait to see how they turn out.

That's it Seekerville. Now go forth and CONTEST!!

Thank you, ladies, for ALL you do to encourage those of us coming along behind you on this writing voyage (since it's water we must cross to get off the island and onto the mainland ;) ).

Great not-the-weekend-edition. Love all that you compile all that contest info! I'll be raring to go again after I finish editing.

Congrats to the diva duo! How cool that you co-author together. Must be fun to always have someone to bounce your ideas off of.

God bless you both with this quick turn of success and just keep writing.

    And editing.

    And writing and editing.

Everyone I know who looks for a quick-road-to-the-top-of-the-mountain finds the same bit of news...

    Writing and editing.

    I'm so proud of you!!!!!

    Ruthy

  17. I'm in love with the wishkeeper fairy!!!!!! Oh, isn't she the CUTEST THING????????

And I'm in a wish-granting mood this weekend, so Tina, what a perfect time to do this!!!

Whatever it takes to keep me happy, and I'm just glad you realize that, darling.

    FOOD.

I'm not cooking. Probably not baking, isn't that what ice cream shops are for in summer????

Panera. You can't go wrong with a breakfast tray from Panera, and stuffed breakfast crescents are a marvelous thing!

Bacon/ham/sausage egg, cheese and a dash of cooked onion.... in a flaky pastry.

I'm fatter just thinking about it.

    ReplyDelete
  18. Of course you don't keep the teeth. How can you keep the teeth if THE FAIRY HAS THEM?????

What on earth in the name of all that's right and holy in this world is the man thinking??????

    Lose the teeth!

That's like saving the umbilical cord or something icky like that... eeeewwwww..... After the first two, I just saved the baby.

It turned out to be a good plan.

    ReplyDelete
  19. Congrats Crystal and Destinae,

My wish is for The Work in Progress Notebook by Jeannie Reush.

I hope everyone has a great weekend. I haven't seen any more snakes. This weekend the ants are taking over. I would much rather struggle with ants than snakes or mice any day.

    ReplyDelete
  20. Crystal and Destanie, congrats on your contest success! And what fun to work together!! I wish my daughter was interested in writing. I'm hoping that someday she may change her mind. :)

Yes, Tina, I agree. A WONDERFUL PHOTO! Two beautiful young women!

    ReplyDelete
  21. Tina, I'd like for the Wishkeeper to come finish polishing my book for me! :)

    ReplyDelete
  22. Good morning everybody and thank you for the congratulations. Ruthy, your comment made my daughter smile. I'll try to check in occasionally today, but I'm right in the middle of moving from one house to the other so I may not be able to.

I'm wishing for Ruthy's new cowboy book, His Montana Sweetheart, but since it's not released my next pick is Stuck Together.

    ReplyDelete
  23. Whew! Thanks for the explanation. I wondered where the contest update was yesterday.

Yep, I'm a victim of routine even in my blog reading! HA!

Congratulations to this months contest divas. Way to go!

    ReplyDelete
  24. Terri,
I started writing a novel one year ago because my then fourteen year old daughter wanted me to, but by the end of the day she'd decided that she wanted to help write it too. It worked out well. With our writing voices still being undeveloped, the scenes we wrote sounded pretty much the same voice wise. Fast forward twelve months and my nearly sixteen year old writes romace almost completely independently, because our voices are now different and coauthoring is more difficult. In reality, we're more like critique partners now than coauthors. But that's great too.

    ReplyDelete
  25. This is confusing, Tina.

GOOD FOR YOU FOR KEEPING US SHARP.

I had to open my computer calendar and double check. It's Saturday, right?

    No, it must be Friday.

    And it's Summer right?

No it's winter because the fairies that took care of Sleeping Beauty are clearly flying around in the snow.

But at least Crystal and Destanie look great!!!!

    ReplyDelete
  26. You guys ROCK!!!YOU ARE THE BEST!!! And me, I'm being selfish..each contest, each winner just means I have another book to check out!
    Have a great weekend!

    ReplyDelete
  27. Way to go, Crystal and Destaine! And thanks for being "guinea pigs" on the co-author question for the Genesis. :)

    ReplyDelete
  28. Congrats to Crystal and daughter!!

Good to see Jenny B. back here!

My wish is for a backlist of Missy Tippens...Her Unlikely Family.

    Happy weekend to all......

    ReplyDelete
  29. Another great contest roundup, Tina!

And YAY for our contest divas, Crystal and Destanie! How fun to write as a mother/daughter team!

Moving day, Crystal? Oh, I feel for you! Hope it goes smoothly!

I'm heading out shortly to present a characterization workshop at the library with my good friend Dora Hiers. If anyone's in the Charlotte area this afternoon, come check us out at the Morrison branch!

    ReplyDelete
  30. Thanks Seekers - and congrats to the Mother-Daughter Divas. How awesome is that? Yay Crystal and Destanie!
Dear Seekerville Wishkeeper: Please put in a pre-order in my name for Stranded with the Rancher. I would be so perfectly happy!!!

    ReplyDelete
  31. I'd love to read Tina's Mending the Doctor's Heart, oh wishkeeper fairy!

    ReplyDelete
  32. Congrats to the contest Divas! What a team :)

And dear Seekerville Wishkeeper, I would dearly love to win a copy of Cheryl St. John's Writing With Emotion, Tension and Conflict!

Have a wonderful Saturday, everyone :)

    ReplyDelete
  33. If I were to win I would have to ponder upon which craft book I would want. Although I would also love a Seeker book! So put me in the hat for either.

Now off to find a coauthor....

    Congrats crystal and Destanie!

    ReplyDelete
  34. Congratulations Crystal and Destanie, diva duo. How awesome is that for mother and daughter to write together. I want to convince my granddaughter to write a teen book with me.

    If I win the drawing, I'd like 4 Weddings & a Kiss.

    ReplyDelete
  35. Waving to Crystal and Destanie! Such a great mom-daughter team! Love your coauthor story...which will resonate with readers when they read your debut! No negative comments allowed in Seekerville today. Everyone sells! Isn't that why Tina posted the pic of the cute fairy godmother?

How are all the Killer Voices doing? What's the word on the street? I'm excited. Bet you are too!

    ReplyDelete
  36. I'm finishing my next story and need nourishment so I brought chocolate covered strawberries and jelly beans. Two favorite foods.

    Enjoy!

    ReplyDelete
  37. Lots of great reference books mentioned today. I'd like one of each. Pretty please with ice cream on top.

Can you tell I'm hungry? :)

    ReplyDelete
  38. Many thanks to Seekerville bloggers for ALL your awesome posts- yours is the first blog I read every day.

If I win, please would the Wishkeeper grant me a copy of Save the Cat by Blake Snyder.

    ReplyDelete
  39. Congrats Ridgway Divas! Great story.

Tina, you pulled a June surprise!

DOG TEETH - that's what's stored in my little keepsake box! What does that say about me? Ahhh, never mind!

Deep and Wide: Advanced Fiction Techniques Worktext by Susan May Warren - and the all-knowing fairy must realize that it's on sale at My Book Therapy at a better price than Amazon. Maybe the fairy has unending cash, considering the rising cost of teeth. I got a quarter, my kids got a buck and my kids kids are up to ten bucks! Inflation!

    ReplyDelete
  40. Jenny from down under. Good to see you again!!!

    ReplyDelete
  41. Cindy W. Terri, and Janet. The Wishkeeper has added your requests.

She's such a cute and chubby gal. A little like me. Of course I am much cuter. Chubbier too.

    ReplyDelete
  42. Ruthy, you want the Wishkeeper to send you food? Yeah. Good luck with that. She'll eat it first. Did you see her figure?

    ReplyDelete
  43. Got it, Wilani!

    Miss! DREAM ON!

    ReplyDelete
  44. Sorry to confuse you, Mary.

But frankly it didn't take much, did it.

    ReplyDelete
  45. Got your request, Jackie Smith!

    ReplyDelete
  46. haha, Cindy Regnier. You are in the Wishkeeper's drawing.

    ReplyDelete
  47. Have fun at your program, Myra. Can't wait for your class to start in Seekerville.

    ReplyDelete
  48. Dog teeth. Let's NOT go there.

    You are in Lyndee.

And hey Ruth Ann Dell. You are in as well.

    ReplyDelete
  49. Tracey Hagwood and Jan Drexler. Fairy dust to you. You are in the drawing.

    ReplyDelete
  50. And my mind is still boggled over the fact that THE RIDGEWAY TEAM ENTERED SEVEN MANUSCRIPTS IN THE GENESIS.

    ReplyDelete
  51. Wait. Wait. Wait.

    I brought food.

Did I ask for it??? Oh, that was GREEDY OF ME.

Okay, 7 manuscripts in GENESIS??? My kind of girls, LOL!

And I love that they're more like critique partners now, because that's cool and fun and working with Destanie keeps Crystal on her toes... which she appears to do quite well.

    :)

Hey, I love the fairy request thing. Oh my stars, fairier ROCK.

    ReplyDelete
  52. I'm eating Deb's chocolate covered strawberries....

    Loving it.

    Thank you. :)

    ReplyDelete
  53. Jenny, how are you doing????? Tell us if the improvement lasted, kid?????

    ReplyDelete
  54. Jennifer Smith you will love A Match Made in Texas.

    So say I.

    ReplyDelete
  55. That's okay, Tina. We plan on entering at least thirteen between is in the First Impressions.:-)

    Ruthy,
Destanie actually writes really well on her own aside from occasional writers block, so I don't have to stay on my toes all the time. One of our mss that semi finaled in the Genesis was nearly entirely her work.

    ReplyDelete
  56. Love the contest diva's photo! Such a nice backgroud, and congrats! I'd love to start a craft book library! Thanks Seekerville for all you do!

    ReplyDelete
  57. Congratulations, first, to the awesome Ladies Ridgway. Thanks, Seekerville, for today's contest opportunity. I'd be thrilled to win either a paperback or Kindle copy of "Story Engineering" by Larry Brooks. Blessings!

    ReplyDelete
  60. Thanks, Heidi. You are in.

    ReplyDelete
  61. May I request either a Julie Lessman book or a Ruthy book should my name be drawn? I think I'm behind on the books of these two... well, more so than any of the other seekers. i'm way behind on all.

Congrats two the double divas! I haven't even tried the contest circuit other than the one at Harlequin for Killer Voices. Must write more. write, write, write.

Thanks for the contest info. Gives me something to aim for.

    ReplyDelete
  62. I'm learning so much for the contests I've entered. Thanks for encouraging us to enter, and thanks for the updates!

    Have a great weekend!

    ReplyDelete
  63. ah, buggers... forgot having to be really specific.

maybe i should go with Wired for Story since I can't pin down exactly which Lessman or Ruthy book I want.

    *brain freeze*

    ReplyDelete
  64. Wishkeepers appreciate specificity!!!

    ReplyDelete
  65. Hey, Jackie! How'd that 5K go?

    ReplyDelete
  66. Oh, did we say Happy Birthday to Sandra Leesmith yet?

    Happy Birthday Sandra!

    ReplyDelete
  67. Thanks for the contest update. Judges'comments are invaluable in showing where I can improve.
Congrats to the mother-daughter writing team as contest divas. Impressed by your number of entries in the Genesis. Lovely pic of you both.
Hope Myra had a successful workshop at the library.
    Happy Birthday to Sandra!
    Wonderful weekend to all.
If wishfairy selects me would like Writing With Emotion, Tension and Conflict. Thanks for the opportunity.

    ReplyDelete
  68. Pat Jeanne! GREAT BOOK CHOICE.

I have it on my desk right now. As we speak.

    ReplyDelete
  69. Not that anyone asked, but I'm going to tell you anyway. I wrote a little over 3,000 words yesterday.

    ReplyDelete
  70. TERRI!!! CONGRATULATIONS. WOOT!!!!

    ReplyDelete
  71. Congratulations, Diva Crystal and Diva Destanie! Fun to learn you write as a mother-daughter team and are having great success!

Tina, thank you for the Contest Update.....some intriguing ones coming up.

Seekerville Wishkeeper fairy, Cheryl St. John's Writing With Emotion & Conflict is on my wishlist.

Happy weekend of writing/reading to all in Seekerville!

    ReplyDelete
  72. Terri!!!! Proud of you, oh my stars, that rocks the big kahuna!!!! YAY!

Hey, I've noticed that CHERYL ST. JOHN CHICK is POPULAR...

    Pshaw.

She's only written like a gazillion books, each one better than the next. Piffle. What could she possibly know????????????

    :)

I love the fairy. We should make the Wishkeeper Fairy a certified villager. She's got cute clothes, too.

    ReplyDelete
  73. You are in the drawing, Sherida.

    ReplyDelete
  74. Yes. Cheryl is popular. Almost as popular as the Wishkeeper.

    ReplyDelete
  75. Im ok the med was raised and is keeping the pain at a lower level. the exercises for my back and neck are helping. I still tire easy and there are times the headpain gets hard to handle but Im not down like I was. The worst part is going to places where there is a lot of noise or bad acoustics like Church. I have ear plugs but it takes a lot of energy at times to deal with the noise.

I see the specialist again in a few weeks so hope he has some thing to say rather than just deal with it. I cant even remember what not having a headache is like but I am coping. I find if I do more than a couple hours at work cleaning or even at the bookshop I feel exhausted.

    ReplyDelete
  76. What a hard choice! Too many great authors. I think I would like to have "Whisper Goodbye" by Myra Johnson.

    ReplyDelete
  77. Oh, and my mother last month found my first baby tooth and gave it to me......What am I supposed to do with it? Thanks Ruthy, for being on the "why on earth, why?" on keeping teeth!

But they're in a box, until he can part with them I guess, but decades from now when I pull them out he'll probably tell me I'm crazy for keeping them . . . . he's got a good memory like that.

Oh, and my fairy is as cheap as I am. Still a quarter. An extra nickel if they pulled it themselves.

Hey, my daughter thinks selling stories for 3 cents is good and wants to sell my book at garaged sales for a dime, a Quarter is mega-bucks!

    ReplyDelete
  78. Dear Seekerville Wishkeeper Fairy, I'd love to win Four Weddings and a Kiss!, it's a hard choice but that's the book I most want to read right now! Haw very nice of you to grant some wishes!

    ReplyDelete
  79. You are right, too many good books to choose from!!!!

    ReplyDelete
  80. Melissa Jagears, cheapest fairy EVER. Your fairy is operating on 1950's pricing. And yet, is wise to do so when children are young enough not to understand their buds are pulling in 20's.... I don't get that, but it's true.

I have a husband with a memory like that. Once it's his idea, we embrace it wholeheartedly.

I saw pics on Facebook. Sandra, you guys know how to party!!!!! :)

Glad you had a fun day! (My version would have been slightly different, LOL, and there would have been no hiking involved unless the car broke down....)
