TINA, love those quotes! Did you think of them when you meant to be writing? Missing the warmth of the Arizona sun this week
ReplyDeleteCongratulations to .ALL winners!
Marianne, please say you're kidding, darling.... I think AZ is headed from hot to roasting. I was born a Yankee and I think it's good if I die someday the same way because 105 degrees and going up.... Wilted Ruthy!!!!!
ReplyDeleteHey, the article about social media/please shut up??? WONDERFUL. For all of you stressing about your platform, GO READ IT, IT'S ONE OF TODAY'S LINKS! MARVELOUS!
I probably love it because I agree with it! :) Here's a line from it:
The recipe seems to be GREAT BOOK + HARD WORK + TIME + LUCK.
I would add God's timing in on that, but the crux was: Just Keep Writing! :) Only she said it funnier!
Coffee is here!!!!
ReplyDeleteAND... Have I mentioned that I'm in love with spring???? Oh be still my heart, frogs, birds, fresh eggs, asparagus, flowers, bounce houses, playing with water... ♥♥♥♥♥
ReplyDeleteWoohoo! Congratulations, Glynna.
ReplyDeleteGreat WE -- even greater quotes. And Ruthy, I loved that article, Please Shut Up, too. Funny and spot on.
Happy writing/reading weekend everyone -- the last one in May.
It would be NICE to win, but that's a misprint in this morning's post. My two books FINALED in the IRCA in the short contemporary category along with Carol Voss. Winners will be announced at RWA. Someone will be correcting the announcement.
ReplyDeleteI love the quotes!! LOL I can't wait to see what comes in through the week. :)
ReplyDeleteHope you all have a great weekend! I'm going shopping with my daughter for swim suits today. Wish me luck! ;)
Congrats on the double finaling, Glynna!!
ReplyDeleteRuthy, I would part with my latest new shoes to get to attend your tea party—what fun that would be!! :-)
ReplyDeleteI loved the article 'Please Shut Up'. I agree 100%. I usually read the WE articles in the afternoon, but I had to read that one first thing. :-)
Congratulations winners! Feel the excitement . . .
Great WE!! Congrats to Glynna and all the finalists in the IRCA Awards. Great going! Ruthy, it's just now spring in NY? I guess we like to assume spring is spring now matter where it is in the states. I live in a bubble.
ReplyDeleteLove all these great writerly quotes! I have fun pinning them to my "For Writers" Pinterest page!
ReplyDeleteGLYNNA, you're ALWAYS a winner in Seekerville! :)
Um, RUTHY, have you been watching the news about bounce houses and high winds???
Congrats, finalists and winners!
ReplyDeleteHaha! I love these quotes--and the links! Thanks for a great WE, Tina! I'm going to have to follow Myra's example and pin these quotes to my "Writing" Pinterest board. Too fun!
WHOA, Teenster, you just got my blood going this morning with the "Amish Romance Novels are the New 50 Shades of Gray," which is good, I guess, since I need to pack all day ...
ReplyDeleteBut I have to admit that the article made me a little sick to my stomach because when erotica sells 1.5 billion books a year and Inspy novels only 720 million (the majority Amish), I can't help but feel like the Christian market needs to do SOMETHING more to reach those women who are devouring erotica. A Barna Group statistic I once quoted in my query letters said that nine out of ten women in the U.S. profess some form of Christianity, and yet I'll wager most are among that 1.5 billion and you can bet your whips and chains that erotica is not teaching them how to apply God's precepts to their lives.
I have absolutely NOTHING against Amish books and enjoy a number of fabulous Amish authors myself -- Suzanne Woods Fisher, Cindy Woodsmall, and Kelly Long among them -- but the chances of many of those in the 1.5 billion-dollar erotica category picking up an inspy book (Amish or otherwise) are slim to nil because those readers are looking for romantic passion. And if the Christian community won't give it to them in a moral and godly way, then you can bet your 1.5 billion dollars the world will.
Sorry for the rant, but this just rang my bell this morning, so thanks for letting me vent. And again, my frustration is NOT with the Amish genre or even the CBA, it's over the catch-22 that polarizes secular and inspy so much that those 9 out of 10 Christian women are being fed a load of horse poop by the world instead of by the One Who created the world.
Whew ... now to go work some of this energy off with packing ...
Hugs,
Julie
I loved that article about Shutting Up so much!!!! I'm still laughing over it, because she's right!
ReplyDeleteMy agent has said for years that social media does nothing to sell books, but creates a presence, and I believe that. So people who see me on facebook and twitter, see me... the crazy fun of little kids, fire engines, animals, kitchen disasters and BABIES.... and once in a while I'll show what I'm doing, announce a sale or hitting a bestseller list, etc. Because they like that. But I firmly believe that availability of books (Thank heavens for e-books now!!!) and great stories at fair prices (this is the current debate between King Amazon and the Big Five Pubs, and Amazon is letting them quietly sink themselves...) and old-fashioned word-of-mouth sells more books than anything.
I'll stick to my guns on that until someone proves me wrong.
Myra, the sad thing is that bounce houses come with a firm warning about winds. It's STITCHED into the house, so you can't very well lose the warning! They're like mammoth balloons! We never put ours up if there's more than a slight breeze, or if storms are predicted because those first winds of a storm front can launch one. Thanks for the reminder, I'm always amazed to see them up and running on windy days.
ReplyDeleteAnd when we rent a big one for our big family party in the summer, our buddy won't even deliver it if the weather is tagged. Why risk it?
Mother Nature can be one tough lady!!!
Mary Hicks!!!! I wish you could be there too because I'm always worried that No One Will Come. EEEEK!
ReplyDeleteBut if that happens, I am surrounded by books!!! And I can talk to the other authors!!! And more PUNCH AND COOKIES FOR ME!
WIN/WIN/WIN!!!!!
I hear you, Julie. So my choices are Amish or Erotica if I want to be a writing star? God Bless you Amish writers. Someone has to do it and I think we can all agree it shouldn't be me!
ReplyDeleteBook signings are right up there with dreams of being naked in your high school. Both so real and terrifying.
ReplyDeleteLOL!! Tina, I'm laughing at that comment you just posted about book signings!! ;)
ReplyDeleteCongrats to all the winners!! And must say CONGRATS again to Glynna!! YAY GLYNNA!!!!
Such an honor!! :)
Love all the writer quotes (especially about throwing glitter on the screen - - how true). ;)
Please enjoy the Georgia Peach cobbler I baked with my last batch of frozen peaches from last summer - - getting ready for a new crop - - YUM!!
Happy Weekend, Patti Jo
GLYNNA!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Sooooooo freakin' happy for you, girlfriend!!!!!!!!!
ReplyDeleteSUPER CONGRATS to all the winners this week, and MEGA HUGS to our Patti Jo for her world-famous peach cobbler!!!
Hugs,
Julie
Okay, checking in one last time before the swim suit shopping. If I don't come back by 10 pm, y'all send out a rescue party!!
ReplyDeleteLOL, Tina, on the book signings!! I can't wait to read the Please Shut Up article. :)
Tina, thanks for the terrific Weekend Edition. Love the hilarious quotes! Congratulations to our winners.
ReplyDeleteI plan to check out at least three of the links but it must wait till tomorrow. Today I'm heading to a grandson's soccer game. I had no idea how much I would enjoy the sport! I'm practically on pins and needles sitting on the sidelines.
Ruthy, wishing you a fabulous signing!! Would love to be able to come. Know you'll all have a fabulous time.
Glynna, mega congrats on the DOUBLE final in the Inspirational Readers Choice Award!!! Wow!! Thrilled for you!
Janet
Amish vs. Erotica.
ReplyDeleteTalk about a spectrum, right?
I'm so happy in my middle ground, tucked with the other people who love romance, but aren't afraid to draw the line.
This isn't meant to be judgmental, we all have our own choices to make, but I sometimes see things on facebook, where folks talk about their tastes in books... and I cringe.
Clearly I prefer the age of brown-paper wrapped Playboy magazines, hidden behind the drugstore counter!!! :) There's just something creeper-ish about some of these stories... Like regular sex isn't good enough.
I think it is! And I say that in the most delightful, prayerful way possible because we're fashioned for it... But I don't want books that make me feel less fulfilled... or invade my mind.
God has so much more in mind for us!
Missy, bathing suit shopping is a nightmare for me but for your daughter, a piece of cake!
ReplyDeleteJanet
Swim suit shoppinggggg???? Who does this??? Who????
ReplyDeleteAnd yes... EEEK! .... I just said "sex" in Seekerville and now I'm going to my Authors' Tea!!!
ReplyDeleteTina, I'm wearing stockings. I have to. I just MUST... :)
See. Janet agrees and I would cry if I went with my daughter. All the clerks in the stores where she shops look like they are twelve. Possibly thirteen.
ReplyDeletePatti Jo, thank you for the peach cobbler! For me, the favorite thing that's served in Seekerville!
ReplyDeleteJanet
I'm so guilty of Lies Writers Tell Themselves #1 and #3 it's embarrassing!
ReplyDeleteThe secret of being a bore is to tell everything. ......Voltaire
ReplyDeleteRuthy is wearing stockings to her signing/tea. Okay, who in this group wears stockings/panty hose? I've given them up. Not that I should. My legs complain. Those seeing my legs complain. But I wear pants in winter and skirts/dresses cover the worst of them in summer.
ReplyDeleteJanet
I think if Patti Jo really loved us, we'd all get invited to her house for peach cobbler. It's just not the same when she dishes it up through a blog!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
ReplyDeleteJanet I wear stockings with a dress like...to a wedding...about twice or three times a year.
ReplyDeleteAre you saying that's wrong?
HEY I'VE PERFECTED SWIMSUIT SHOPPING.
ReplyDelete(I apologize, I should have mentioned this before)
I bought a running skirt. Black. And have worn it for years. I change to a new top when the old one gets faded. But the jogging skirt isn't full and it isn't long, but it is MODEST. I LOVE IT. We go boating a lot and I am forced into a suit many times in the summer. (way more than I'm forced into stockings!)
Mine is Mizuno. And I have to buy them online because trust me, stores that cater to joggers do NOT have my size!!!
Running Skirt
Wear hose! Raising hand. Oh my gosh this discussion is getting random.
ReplyDeleteAlthough it is.... Humorous!
ReplyDeleteHey, Tina! I saw your jazz and rain website. Here's one I really like (but I forget to use it!) http://rainycafe.com/ I love the noise of people, for some reason, when I'm writing.
ReplyDeleteGood morning, Seekerville! It's a beautiful day in the mountains of Arizona -- 70 degrees and possibly the prettiest day we've had all this year (unless you're really into snow).
ReplyDeleteOh, and Ruthy, it's hard to wilt in Arizona. Dry heat, you know, and usually a pleasant breeze to stir the air. Just step into the shade with an ice cold drink and you're good to go.
Have you looked at the legs of the young women at weddings? Did you see hose? Not here. LOL Young is the operative word. But I can pretend. Right?
ReplyDeleteHose? Isn't that something you water plants with?
ReplyDeleteWait . . . MARY . . . people RUN in skirts?????
ReplyDeleteAnother fun Weekend Edition, Tina! You rock!
ReplyDeleteI'm looking forward to Tuesday. I have the coolest prize to go with one of the two books I'll be giving away on my guest post. It's perfect for Seekerville, I tell you. :-)
Thanks for all the congrats, everyone! Double-finaling was a real shocker. I had to listen to the phone message several times --not because I couldn't understand what the coordinator was saying, but because I couldn't BELIEVE what she was saying!
ReplyDeleteWith less than 44 hours remaining before I have to hit "send" on my next WIP (a Spring 2016 release)and a final 80 pages remaining to be revised and the WHOLE THING proofed, I'm headed back to work! It's so wonderful to have the window by my computer wide open and not be wrapped up in a blanket as I write! :)
Melanie! Thanks for the link. I have several I use and forget to use. I also have a rain phone app.
ReplyDeleteGo, Glynna! You can do it.
ReplyDeleteMyra, not only do people (women mostly, I think...at least I HOPE!) run in skirts, they win marathons. My 50 yo sister-in-law won a 5K run this past summer... in AUGUST in MS (torture!) in her age group. I just texted her Mary's link. She and my cowboy also bike as often as they can, biking 20-30 miles when they ride.
ReplyDeleteThe cowboy wears jeans while biking....can't get him to wear the tight shorts! lol But at least he's quit wearing cowboy boots while on the bike. JK about the boots, but not about the jeans. I would die of heat exhaustion.
Congratulations on your doubly delightful news, Glynna! I squealed when I saw your name on the list twice.
ReplyDeleteLOL, Pam, I don't think even running in a skirt would help me win any marathons--much less actually attempt one!!!!
ReplyDeleteCowboy boots on the bike . . . nope, doesn't sound like a good plan.
Me either, Myra! I have no desire to try a marathon. Nope.
ReplyDeleteMy favorite "white noise" app for iPhone is Relax Melodies. I just saw you can get it for the Mac. Trying it out right now . . . oh yeah--it's great!
ReplyDeleteOh, but I did dream that my SIL had signed me up for one! I texted her the next day and told her I'd never been so relieved to wake up and find out it was only a nightmare! She snickered and said she was going to sign all her friends up.
ReplyDeleteI could do the walk-a-thons. I might come in last, but I could do it. lol
Tina, love the quotes! I would add...spending just 15 minutes on Facebook. It's sucks me in, and I can stay glued to FB much too long!
ReplyDeleteStockings? Yes, I still wear them. Call me old fashioned...or just plain old! LOL!
OH MARY CONNEALY!!!! I DO really love my Seeker friends - - I promise!!
ReplyDeleteAnd if there was any way possible I'd have you all to my house for a weekend retreat, and I'd happily serve food and make sure everyone felt comfortable (in other words, I'd be the best "southern hostess" I could be). ;)
So if I ever get any of my kitties in a cat food commercial and make lots of $$$ that's one of the first things I'd do - - host the Seekers! :) But we'd probably have the retreat at my Georgia coast....ahhhh...now there's a nice DREAM! LOL....
Hugs, PJ
I will just show up with a bowl, Patti Jo. No expense to you at all.
ReplyDeletePS I still have that little miniature honey bear in my kitchen window.
I think of you fondly every time I look at it.
A very SWEET gift. :D
Young women never wear stockings anymore. But they have great legs and shapes and oh my stars, their skin is lovely.... I've had six babies, my legs are under protest!
ReplyDeleteSo yes, I wear pantyhose because it smoothes some stuff and hides the nasties. And I don't feel dressed up without them. Now I WISH I looked like these Weather Channel girls, or the Fox news women or Carrie Underwood, but I don't and the legs need to be properly corralled... but I honestly understand that Deb and I and Tina are in a club of our own... and Mary, 2 or 3 times/year!
And I wear tights in the winter so they look nice under dresses/skirts.
I am that person.
Patti Jo, I like the sound of a retreat with you! I'd be there in a heartbeat!
ReplyDeleteI am printing off my next Seeker novella "The Pastor Takes a Wife" and it's going to editor tomorrow....
And I love it to pieces!
RUTHY GOES HISTORICAL! AND HYSTERICAL!!!
Ooh, thank you, Seekerville! My summer class I'll be taking is Books and Media for YA, so how perfect is that? :)
ReplyDeleteI just read my first Amish novel last week --there was an "Englisch" character also that kind of made it easier for me to transition. It was good, but I didn't love it. I'm really surprised that Amish is the largest selling part of the Inspy market --is it really just the "simpler lifestyle?" I admit, that's part of why I like historicals, but I've never completely understood the appeal of Amish fiction ... But I'm glad people that enjoy the genre have a lot of authors to choose from!
@Ruthy - I have to show you the most interesting stockings I've seen: http://search.hottopic.com/search?p=Q&ts=custom&lbc=hottopic&w=Disney%20tights
ReplyDeleteSome of us younger folks would definitely wear those! ;-)
I returned in one piece and with my sanity from the swim suit shopping! She actually found one! And I think it only took a couple of hours. :)
ReplyDeleteNow I get back and see the old pantyhose debate has fired up again! LOL
BTW, I also found JEANS! And those can be traumatic to buy as well. I lucked out. Found two pairs for myself!
ReplyDeleteThanks for including me in your round up! Lots of good stuff in here. Have a great weekend. :-)
ReplyDeleteGood to see you, Gwen!!!
ReplyDeleteJEN!!!!! I love them, LOL! Notice that they're half price now! Why don't they have them in sparkly pink????? What a great find. Disney tights in silhouette. Amazing that they can embed designs and merge the two fabrics. Holy Impressed Author, Batgirl!!!
ReplyDeleteHullo, Gwen!
ReplyDeleteMissy, finding jeans is akin to winning the lottery. I refuse to discuss swimsuits. I haven't had the heart to shop for one since wearing a hole in the knee of the last one!
I found jeans at Kohls... (Okay to make this writing related I wear jeans while I write and I wear pantyhose to signings and church = Christian author wardrobe advice!)
And I love them. Which reminds me I need to go exercise so they still fit because I loved on those cookies and cupcakes yesterday!
Congratulations GLYNNA on the double final! Congrats, also, to all the winners. And I have a Sparkle Abbey book in my future. How fun! Thanks for your generosity, ladies.
ReplyDeleteTINA, there are some awesome links, in particular the Whimsydark one about self-promotion. I clicked through to the related post as well. Thanks again for the WE. You da best :-)
Nancy C
JULIE!! What you wrote about "the catch-22 that polarizes secular and inspy" so needed to be said. Thank you.
ReplyDeleteNancy C
ReplyDeletePantyhose, passion and peach cobbler. Only at Seekerville!!!
Nancy C
I need pantyhose (control top!) to cover up my passion of Patti Jo's peach cobbler!!!!
ReplyDeleteIn case any of you think I don't overuse certain words in manuscripts, let me announce to you today that I have excised a novella's worth of repeat words this weekend!!! SHAME ON ME! God bless find and replace, LOL!
ReplyDeleteRuthy, I have words that I overuse all the time, then I have words and phrases that crop up in my current manuscript. On my last novella, I used "a bit of ______" so much the editor pointed it out. This time it was the phrase "All right".
ReplyDeleteLike a hamster wearing a rut in his wheel, or a broken record, something gets stuck and it's hard to jar it loose! lol
Pam, thank you for supporting me in my intervention!!!!!
ReplyDeleteI feel better now.
Almost... normal. :)
Ah, Ruthy, I can relate. Pet words are like weeds. You kill one and two more pop up in its place. :-) I used to favor just. Then qualifiers like a bit or some. Feel better, Pam?
ReplyDeleteJanet
Ruthy said: I refuse to discuss swimsuits. I haven't had the heart to shop for one since wearing a hole in the knee of the last one!
ReplyDeleteLOL Spew alert!
Janet
Jeans are stylish. The stretch makes them decently comfortable, but elastic-waist sweatpants are the most comfortable writing garb I own.
ReplyDeleteJanet
I have to say I don't read much Amish (not enough shooting). But I have LOVED Debby Giusti's Amish/Military suspense novels.
ReplyDeleteIt's just this perfect mix of genres.
Really I'm loving it Debby. We all just survived a tornado in her last one. :)
ReplyDeleteCongratulations to Glynna and all the finalists and winners this week!
Tina, thank you for all the WE information and the very appropriate quotes. I'm tossing glitter at my computer. :)
I'm enjoying the great links, especially this thought from WhimsyDark: "The recipe seems to be GREAT BOOK + HARD WORK + TIME + LUCK."
Myra, sent me that Whimsy Dark link, Sherida. I found it to be vindicating!!!
ReplyDeleteSee, Nancy, liked that one too. I bow to Myra.
ReplyDeleteThanks again, everyone for all the congratulations!
ReplyDeleteAnd congratulations to YOU Ruthy for weeding out your repetitive words. Amazing, isn't it? I added a few more to that list this weekend that jumped out at me as I was doing my final sweep of the manuscript that's due tomorrow. I know I haven't caught them all, but there's a barrel full that have gone bye-bye the past several days.
As soon as I shove this book out the door, I'll jump in and work on "front matter" and cover ideas and find images for the Art Fact Sheet -- and then try finding my way back to "the real world" before I get sucked into the NEXT book.
My crit partners always seem to find repetitive words that I couldn't possibly have overlooked! But I did. When we read each other's stuff aloud it's really funny because it's so different from what we thought we wrote -- and rewrote and rewrote.
ReplyDeleteCara - I have two readers who proofread my WIPs before I send them in and it's amazing what they find that I overlooked. Missing words. Wrong words. Duplicate words. I'm so grateful to have other eyes look it over! I had to laugh today--one sentence was supposed to read something like "She stood, then moved to the fireplace." But I'd written it as "She stood, then moved the fireplace." Didn't know her own strength, I guess!! :)
ReplyDelete
