Welcome to the June Contest Update. The official countdown shows that there are 213 days left to 2016. What have you done today to make your dream come true?
In addition to the contest update, we've prepared a list of conferences by month. You can access that here. If you can't attend a large conference, a small conference, workshop or retreat is a great way to network and meet with your people. WRITERS!!
From Rhonda Starnes blog:
So, this just happened! I won the Inspirational Romance category of the Wisconsin Fab Five writing contest! I’m so thankful for writing friends and mentors who push me to step outside my comfort zone and enter contests I wouldn’t normally enter.
You may be wondering, what are the benefits of entering contests? Well, I see two main benefits. First, it’s a great way to get unbiased feedback on your writing. Second, entering contests is an excellent way to get your work in front of an editor who might not have seen it otherwise. So, if you’re a writer and you’ve been “sitting on the fence” trying to decide if you should enter contests, I say go for it!

~~~Welcome to our June Contest Diva: Angie Dicken!
My first introduction to my most favorite writing group ACFW was in 2010 when I entered my then-WIP in the Genesis contest. Previously, I had taken three years to write a different story, danced with a vanity press and hadn't gotten the vibe nor the funds to go through with it, and realized I needed to stuff that first manuscript in a drawer never to be seen again. So I began a new story and stumbled upon the Genesis contest via the web.
I swear I thought I was closer to publication than what the feedback gave me. Ever felt that way?
But, if it wasn't for that entry and its feedback, I'd have never ventured further into the ACFW world and joined the Scribes Loop. I met my crit partner/bestie Ashley Clark there, and she pushed me to come to my first ACFW conference in 2010—that magical time where I met another bestie Pepper Basham and soon became an Alley Cat for The Writer's Alley.
All because of an entry fee, honest feedback, and the desire to succeed.
That's where my contest journey, aka thickening-of-skin, began. Honestly, I have struggled on and off with entering contests. I notice that when I first read feedback after a loss, my stubborn pride kicks in and I want to throw a fit...or my laptop. But once I calm down and take in the comments, I often find that there is truth in the advice, or at least, a chance for me to make my writing shine even more than I thought I could. I've had a few finals over these past years, but a LOT more falling short before the next round. While I will always take a win, it has been the losses where I have most seen God shape my perseverance with a huge helping of humility.
I have concluded that contest feedback pushes me to be better. This past year or so, I actually entered a contest FOR the feedback, not the win. One of my WIP's is a genre I've never written in before. I want the sting, the slicing and suggestions I can use as tools to tighten the story and give it a chance. Never thought I'd do that. I was always seeking the win. Of course, the win would be lovely too.
But contests aren't just about the winning, are they?
ReplyDeleteGo forth and contest!
Welcome to Seekerville, Fedora. Reader or writer? From where do you hail?
ReplyDeleteWhat a wonderful contest update, Tina! Thanks so much for putting it together!
ReplyDeleteAnd congrats on being a diva, Angie! So fun!!!!! I love the stubborn pride remark, and the eventual calming down when we realize that it might not be the judges, missing our brilliance!!!! It might be that a slight bit of tweaking is needed, LOL!
Good for you!
Tina, you are turning into a professional meme-maker! They're so stinkin' cute!
I BROUGHT COFFEE!!!! Tea, juice, soda and coffee fixin's are on the back table. Just move the cat aside.
ReplyDeleteCongratulations to Contest Diva, Angie!
ReplyDeleteTina, where are you finding all of these mugs? I love them! Thanks for a great contest update, we all appreciate it.
All the best to all of the writers.
ReplyDeleteI need to stick some of my my new projects in the contest water. The ofdest thing that hit my mind, though, is ...if I'm lucky enough to final, then the final judge will know it's me. There's always the hope that one of these days, they may actually like something enough to publish it.
ReplyDeleteCongratulations Angie. Continue to go forth and contest.
ReplyDeleteI love the nerdy girl mugs. Cute.
Well, another surgery for me today. I have to leave in a little bit for the hospital. At least it is an an outpatient this time. Please pray all goes well.
Blessings,
Cindy W.
Congratulations to our Contest Diva Angie
ReplyDeleteTina, I love this mug. Please enter me in the drawing.
I have two short stories I have been writing for the ACFW Virginia contest. I wrote the End on one of them on Monday and I hope to do the same on the second one today. Then need to polish them.
I hope everyone has a great writing day!
TINA, thanks for the contest update. It's exciting to have all these opportunities to improve craft or better yet, to final or win.
ReplyDeleteCongratulations, DIVA ANGIE!! Thanks for sharing your journey. Wishing you the very best.
Janet
No guts no glory. So true, Tina. I'm not sure why but I was never afraid to enter contests. The first time I was clueless, sure I'd final. The judges comments stunned me. Who knew I had no idea what I was doing? LOL But after digesting the wonderful tips I was given and incorporating them into my story, even I could see it was better. From that point on, I saw contests as a fabulous way to improve my craft or to get a reaction to a new story. Winning and finaling were icing on the cake. Who doesn't love icing? But the cake is what supports it. I entered to make a better cake.
ReplyDeleteJanet
Happy June! I love Tina's books.
ReplyDeleteThank you for the coffee, Ruthy. The donut brigade is now here.
ReplyDeleteAren't they adorable Jil? Happy Contest Update Day and a toast to diva, Angie.
ReplyDeleteGood morning, Mary Preston!!
ReplyDeleteYes, Walt. That's the plan.
ReplyDeleteFinal.
Request Full.
Sale.
Lather, Rinse, Repeat.
Praying, Cindy W.
ReplyDeleteWilani, way to go!
ReplyDeleteNo guts, no glory.
You've got both.
Janet,
ReplyDeleteI'm the same way with contests.
Forge on!!!
Walt, I made sure to do that. Once my work was placing/finaling or winning, I made sure to get new things out there that folks hadn't seen. I figured if the editors saw multiple works of mine that were either ready, or almost ready, they'd know I was in for the long haul.
ReplyDeleteRuthy "Must Prove Herself" Logan Herne :)
But hey.... it worked!!!!
Except for the Golden Heart, but we're not going to discuss that today.
Nope.
Off topic.
I refuse to dwell on it.
Absolutely refuse.
Mmm hmmmm.
Thanks for the contest update!
ReplyDeletePlease throw my name in the drawing for the awesome mug :)
Great contest update Tina What a blessing you are to all of us who love and value contests. You are always so with it when it comes to timely news. Thank you sooooo much.
ReplyDeleteLove the mug. chuckle
You are in, Leslie. And an awesome mug it is.
ReplyDeleteYou're right, Sandra. Hadn't thought of that. He'll be an overnight success.
ReplyDeleteWow! Angie, I admire your grit to enter so many contests. I love that photo of you, by the way. The only thing missing is a tray of crumpets and scones.
ReplyDeleteI've also been around the contest block, but I'm still in the feedback stage. I'm hoping to collect a few wins on my next project. For now, though, it's been a great way to make improvements to my writing style.
Thanks for sharing your experience. You've inspired me today.
ReplyDeleteI'm with Jill. Where do you find these mugs? And really, I do love big books. But then, I love little books, too. And mid size!
Authors, please enter these contests and final, and publish!!!!
Thanks TINA for keeping them up to date!
Thanks all! It is so fun being on Seekerville! You all are a blast, and such great hostesses.:) I NEED one of those mugs for my tea and crumpets. Actually, I don't like tea as much as coffee...so I am not 100% legit...although tea hadn't hit England in the 16th century yet...um, yes, I am a history geek. (The pic is from the ACFW genre night last year...my last novel is a Lady Jane re-telling. Sigh. One day I hope to see it on the shelves!)
ReplyDeleteBetter get back to writing on my manuscript for the matchmaker's contest. Only about 70 pages to go!
Have a blessed day!
Another great contest update, Tina! And congrats to our June Contest Diva, Angie!
ReplyDeleteTina, you find the cutest mugs! If my coffee mug cupboard weren't so full already, I'd have to go on a shopping spree.
Tina, thanks for the heads up about a number of published contests! I love Gayle Wilson, former RWA Pres. Such a gracious, lovely lady. She was always so supportive and encouraging when I was new to this writing whirl. I mean brand new. I won her contest some years ago and would love the honor of winning again. Therefore, I must submit, right? BTW, Gayle's from Alabama so a good Southern Belle! I bet she loves grits! :)
ReplyDeleteContest Diva, Angie! Thanks for sharing your writing journey and your cute "in costume" pic! Congrats on all your success in the contest circuit! YAY!!! You're doing everything right, and your hard work will pay off, I'm sure of it!
ReplyDeleteHugs!
That is the FUNNIEST COFFEE CUP EVER!!!!!
ReplyDeleteAnd go Angie. 70 pages is like nothing!! Then the real fun begins.
ReplyDeleteE D I T I N G!!!! WOOOT!!
Congrats to Angie. OK Tina, I'll try to get brave enough to enter something but only because you got me with that "no guts no glory" thing. I really need that nerdy mug. Might as well advertise my good qualities.
ReplyDeleteAngie, congratulations on being this month's Diva and on making it to the final round of the LIH Matchmakers contest. Wishing you all the best as you finish your manuscript and prepare to hit send.
LOL, girl, you said a mouthful there because that is SOOOOO TRUE, although we never realize that at the time, do we? And, WOW, you sure have your fair share of finals/wins under your belt, so you go, girl!! Congrats on being our June Diva and sending prayers your way on all those finals. :)
LOL ON TINA'S COMMENT TO WALT:
ReplyDeleteAnd Tina, I love that quote: "Open doors are for walking through."
ReplyDeleteGood luck all! Congrats Rhonda :)
ReplyDeleteWell deserved. Thos who work their butts off generally succeed!!
ReplyDeleteThanks for stopping by Deanna!
ReplyDeleteThanks for a great Contest Update, TINA! And congratulations, ANGIE! I really appreciate you sharing your story - love your perspective!
ReplyDeleteThe last few days have been crazy in my "neck of the woods" with flooding (severe at times) and more rain in the forecast. We have a flooded basement and garage, closed businesses and roads here in town, and near hysteria until we knew our daughters and their families were safe (the towns they live in, one and half hours apart, were both flooded, too). It's just crazy, but we are all okay and that's the most important thing. Some of our church family were displaced, and have suffered property loss, but they are okay physically. So thankful for God's blessings!
We saw pictures on Yankee Belle Cafe. Mindy Obenhaus is in Texas. Praying for safety.
ReplyDeleteYou got a new profile picture. You look gorgeous, Laura.
Go Forth and Contest
ReplyDeleteExcellent advice Contest Queen Tina!
Great contest thoughts, Diva Angie! Love the "thickening-the-skin" journey! I appreciate your comments on ACFW. Congrats on an impressive list of accomplishments!
ReplyDeletePraying for you, Cindy, and all those in the flooded areas.
Contests are such a good way to receive feedback to help improve the 'cake.' I never entered a story to place or win -- but when it did, that icing was a real treat :-)
One of the perks about contest wins is the community that cheers us on, right, Rhonda? So glad to be here today!
Good news, Laura!!!
ReplyDeleteThank you to everyone who prayed for me yesterday. I felt those prayers and everything went well. The anesthesiologist listened and kept me light so I woke up quickly without any nausea. The surgeon said the surgery went as he hoped and he doesn't think he will have to repeat the procedure. It was something that had I not had surgery in January they wouldn't have found until much later. It had to do with my urethra and my bladder.
ReplyDeleteThank you again for your prayers.
Smiles & Blessings,
Cindy W.
Glad all went well, Cindy~~~~
ReplyDeleteI love the mug! I Like Big Books and I Can Not Lie. When I was in Upward Bound, they did an awards night. Since I was always reading I got the biggest book award. They found the biggest book in the library and awarded it to me. Sadly, I couldn't take it home. Off to enter a contest or two!
ReplyDeleteAdding my congratulations to JACKIE!!! Way to go!!!
