ReplyDeleteLove the beach theme, TINA! I'd give just about anything to beam myself in for a barefoot walk at sunset along the beach at La Jolla (pronounced la hoya for those of you who aren't familiar with this beautiful place in California).
ReplyDeleteAND I love the Seekerville calendar download for putting stickers on to mark the days you stick with your writing! I've resorted to tracking with stickers and a calendar a number of times in my life--it's especially helpful when you're trying to establish a habit of writing every day or writing to a certain word count daily. So motivating to look back on the month and see those days filled with stickers!

ReplyDeleteTINA, congratulations on your new Facebook author page!! I'm hoping to find and like everyone's page here (so if I missed anyone let me know), and I'm (gulp) starting one, too. I took an ACFW class about Facebook, and read numerous blogs that recommended starting one (even before publication) but there are two different kinds (the one where you add people, and one where people can like your page) so I'm still a little confused by how some of it works. Also, it's difficult to inspire "followers" when you don't know where you're going, LOL.
My sweet son-in-law did get my website up and going though (a website is another thing that's highly recommended even before you're published) and this is what I put on the home page: Writer Laura Conner Kestner wants you to follow her, but she confesses that it will not be a thrill-a-minute ride…yet. She admits to being an uninspired cook so she won’t be sharing recipes with you. And she can’t keep a plant alive for more than a few weeks, so gardening tips are also out. She’s terrible at crafts, fashion, decorating, and nearly everything else that would make her an interesting person to follow on social media. But she writes great stories about fascinating, flawed, fictional people and she can’t wait to share them with you someday soon. In the meantime, she will post (via the blog link here) some of the more fun things she’s stumbled across while doing research for her books—and the occasional warm, wise or witty (in her opinion) thoughts that cross her mind." I figured I might as well start out honest with potential fans that there's not much to see yet :-)

ReplyDeleteI have a question for the Love Inspired Authors. I've noticed the suspense books for this month never appeared on the shelves. I called Walmart. They sent me round and round and I was told I would need to talk to the vender only I have no information on how to do that. At this point I am wondering what to do, who to contact. Anyone have any suggestions. I will miss being able to read the suspense books. What will be next to disappear from the shelves the regular or the Historical. It is not worth it to buy the e books for them because they are almost as expensive as the print besides I prefer the print books.
Can hardly believe July's almost over. I so love popping in here--always a wellspring of encouragement and practical advice and such fun fellowship (and giveaways LOL). <3 Congrats to all the winners--and I can't wait to read next week's posts. <3

Ah, walks along the beach, Barb. We settle for our Unpublished Island, where we still hold our yearly parties, despite the fact that the island is empty of Seekers and Captain Jack left, bored with our constant writing.
ReplyDeleteLaura You will be so happy to have your webpage and Facebook page in place when you sign that first contract. Those are two less things you will have to attend to when you're working for your publisher. Also, they look to see if you have those in place and that might give you an edge if they have more than one piece they are considering. Never hurts to be prepared.

We're getting ready for an influx of kids & grandkids on Monday. Our daughter who had the bad riding accident a week go is on the mend, doing very well, and continuing their trip this way--can't wait to see her! Our other daughter & family will come up to join the fun for a day or two. So both daughters & SILs plus 5 of 7 grandkids all under one roof!

I can't even describe to anyone the soul-calming sensation of a barefoot walk along that stretch of beach, the soothing sound of the waves, the sun setting on that distant horizon. How wonderful for you to have grown up along the Pacific coast! Our very own "Gidget"!!!

ReplyDeleteI'm sad to say, my summer is officially over. Teachers return to work Monday, and students return Thursday. Where did the time go!?!
Luckily, I won a Ruthy critique!! That put a big smile on my face! So, I'll concentrate on that and forget the day job...well at least until 6 a.m. Monday morning.
Ruthy, on my second R&R from my Blurb to Book entry the editor wanted me to delete the first seven pages, so I think I'll take this week to get that first chapter rewritten and polished, then send it your way. Thanks for the prize!!

It's been this way for a number of years, but I still struggle with the AUG school schedule. I'd rather be at the beach!!! :)

ReplyDeleteI'm sorry you couldn't find this month's LIS books at your Walmart. Some of the authors were mentioning the problem. Evidently the distribution process was the reason. Harper Collins bought LI, and I believe they're trying to meld the two companies. Not sure if that's accurate, but it's what I've heard. Hopefully, it will NEVER happen again.
Can you order the books from Amazon or another online source? Is KMart in your area. The one near me stocks LI books. Sometimes other bookstores do as well. Also you can order books through neighborhood book stores, if you have any in your area. You don't have to pay for shipping, and the cost would be about the same.
I'm so sorry it happened as are all the other LI authors and editors.

ReplyDeleteWilani, I had the same problem with WalMart not stocking the Love Inspired Suspense line this month. I told my husband I would have to go to the used book store in Ft. Wayne (30 minute drive) to see if I could get a copy there. So we journeyed out this morning to Ft. Wayne & he suggested we visit the larger WalMart that we would pass on our way. We went in and there the book I wanted (part of the Rookie K-9 series) and I was elated. I will say, our WalMart has gotten worse over the course of the last year in displaying books. They have now cut back from four shelves high to two books side by side in the Love Inspired line to two shelves with two books side by side and then they just toss them on the shelves without any order. I tend to move the other books over to where they belong (some titles have three across and only two books in each spot, so when I arrive, I put all six copied in one spot then I sort the LI books so at least the books are all together and the authors are together as well. Of course I make sure the Seeker books are always up front. I don't cover up any author's books but if I see room can be made so the LI books can be better displayed I do it. WalMart has an outside firm that comes in to merchandise their books (at least they used to) and I really don't think they care...but I do and I know many other people who love LI do as well. You would think they would notice that the LI books sell faster than some of the others and give them more room. They used to be eye level and now they are on the bottom two shelves. It's almost time for me to write a letter to WalMart headquarters.

Tina, what a great WE. I only clicked on one link last night! It was the one about the Maverick women and what they're doing. Reading how H. Ward was able to make so much money indie publishing was amazing. Was she the exception or the picture of possibility for most writers? That's the question I was left with. :)

OLIVIA, Tina is absolutely right--we have to do what's best for us in each season of our lives. Years ago, when my girls were school-age, I had to basically take summers off from writing because of all the running around I was doing with their activities. Now, I'm looking at very little writing for the whole month of August because of family visits, the ACFW conference, and a few other things taking precedence. You do what you can, and you do your best to let the guilt go. You are the only one who can decide what's most important at any given time of your life.

I keep forgetting about it, but I have a friend who even learned how to replace a bathroom sink stopper thingie on there. Gotta remember YouTube. Hey, we didn't get color TV till I was a senior in high school...and then it was either too green or red most of the time. I need to hire a 10 year old to teach me all the techie stuff.

Also, awesome article link from CopyBlogger on website pop-up forms. I concur - consider your readers/target audience…with so many sites I visit using them, it's easy to get pop-up box overload. A signup form in another area of the site could be a better fit in the long run! :)

*I* turned in the manuscript for May the K9 Spy's 4th book last weekend and have almost completed the front/end matter... Cover designer working diligently. Illustrator has done a pawmazing job bringing the story to life. Yes. I'm excited. Been two long years getting 'er done but we're about there.
Ice cream for everyone!!!
(Seriously, there's an Exxon station nearby which has hand scooped ice cream - Mayfield - YUM - an overflowing 6oz styrofoam cup (about 3 regular scoops I'd guess) for $1.50 plus tax. That's right. We can have an ice cream date and get outta there for $3.29. Gotta love it. I had "Caramel Pie" and "Extreme Moose Tracks" to celebrate.

Megs, no... I try to get into bed by 9 or 9:30.... and sometimes the 4:00 AM alarm (which is really K-Love radio, what a nice way to wake up, right????) goes off and sometimes I'm already awake. I figured if Edward from "Pretty Woman" could get by on 6 hours a night, I could train myself to do the same.
ReplyDeleteOf course he was fictional, but Richard Gere was so stinkin' cute in that movie! :)
It is 4:23 right now, I scanned e-mails for anything important or crazy fun (not promos or social stuff...) and now Seekerville because it's a hoppin' place to be and then facebook for ten minutes... by then I'm awake enough to write for 90 minutes and see what that gets me before the day begins for the world.
With my ginormous family I had to find some way to write that worked for me.... And then I just started waking up around 3:45 and finally realized God was opening a window of opportunity!
And it worked! What a great God and a marvelous window!
The ice cream sounds marvelous, KC! And congrats on getting this one done, some things take longer than others!

There was a little drug store in Athens, GA, when my eldest attended UGA, that had two-scoop ice cream cones for 25 cents! We'd always stopped whenever we visited our daughter. As you can imagine, the drug store did a great business...especially in the spring and summer!
Waving to Ruthy who's been up for four-plus hours already! Whenever I wake--no matter the time--I always know you've gotten up before me...and we live in the same time zone. Of course, I do go to bed a lot later than you. Not that I'm very productive in those late night hours. :)

Josee, I use and love both. My kids are split.... some still cling to the tradition of paper, some are in love with e-readers. And they're all in their 20's and 30's now....
ReplyDeleteThe early rising (as you can see, 6 kids and two jobs when I started) was of necessity... but it worked so well! I never had to feel guilty like I was robbing time from my family...
So that was (singing this next!!!) AWESOME!!!!

ReplyDeleteThat was part of the other reason for going to bed early and getting up early. I'm a bear at night, I'm not nice when I'm tired, and I got nothing done.
So I watch the 3 or 4 shows I love on demand when there's time or I need a break, and other than that, I gave up TV.... because I like my alternative reality of fiction so much better!

ReplyDeleteIt's from Abbott's Frozen Custard and they call it "Ambrosia Salad" so think Spumoni but better... It's pistachio pineapple custard with huge monster-sized cherries and chopped nuts.
Amazing.
And in Phoenix we went to a re-enacted Gold Mine town outside of the city that was so much fun and they have an ice cream there to die for. Dynamite Crunch. OH MY STARS. Worth the trip just to get this old fashioned amazingly delicious ice cream!
And then one more, from Perry's, a New York ice cream maker.... Caramel Praline Turtle...
Only a few places around here have that one, and I must go sample it before the season gets away from me!
Abbott's is closest, so I keep myself supplied with "Ambrosia Salad".
My guilty pleasure along with getting dirty in the yard!

ReplyDeleteHow to 'Shop' and 'Experience' a Setting for your next Story!
Last night I was reading the amazingly vivid depiction of the Grand Canyon in Sandra Leesmith's novella, "New Beginnings" (from the Seeker novella collection, "Love Will Find a Way") when it hit me! All of a sudden I was transported back to my treadmill exercising days when I spend hours walking thru my Grand Canyon walking and stairstepper exercise videos.
While I've been to the Grand Canyon several times, I've never experienced the Grand Canyon as deeply as those hours of tapes afforded me.
Then I thought about my other exercise tapes from around the world. Next, I rushed over to YouTube and found many more walking tours.
There is a great video from Rome. It brought back the day my wife and I walked over twenty miles in one day (pedometer verified). These are not tourist tapes. They are walking tapes at walking speeds to show what is really there -- compete with problems and unsightly sightseeing views and all.
On YouTube viewing these videos are free. So why not 'shop' (or scout) locations for your next story? Why not walk them? Spend an hour or so seeing what is really there -- warts and all. Hear the sounds, see the mice run across the trail as you approach? (Yes, the mice on the trail are in the Banff walking video.) Why not pick up all the little details that make a scene come alive?
It's all possible and it will be my new M.O. when starting a new story or when editing a WIP in the future. You can be there like you are there! And not like a tourist back home looking at cliché pictures designed for sightseers.
Here are two samples on YouTube to give you a taste of what I think is the next best thing to being there. Besides, being there is often overvalued since getting there can steal too much of your writing time.

When you are walking on your treadmill, while watching the video, part of your mind can get to think it is real. There is one segment in the Grand Canyon video where you are walking on the side of a cliff -- on a three foot wide ledge -- with a mile down drop-off, and there are people coming the other direction!
I always hated for that part to come up! I would never take that walk in real life but people do it every day. What a great scene for a romance. I can just see the heroine frozen in place against the cliff with the hero coming the other way. Why I'd just turn around and let her look at my back until we got off that ledge. What a way to meet!
BTW: the heroine is a combat veteran trying to conquer her fear of heights. She's an alpha female! He's an ex-SEAL. She hates that he is helping her like she was some TSTL romance heroine! Just wait to he says the wrong thing!!!
