ReplyDeleteJust got the word that Books-A-Million will host my local signing. The manager never heard back from corporate, but the books are in the store. I'll be signing at the Peachtree City BAM on Sept 22, 4-6:30 PM. (Really miss my wonderful independent book store that had to close. A sad day in PTC!)

Debby, I haven't read Plain Truth yet because my hubby snagged it first! He wanted to read another suspense book, (He loves Richard Mabry.) and your new book was the only suspense in the house. I asked him for his opinion, and he said it's really good and he's really enjoying it--not bad for a man who rarely reads fiction. However, last night he dropped it into the tub as he was reading, so it's drying out today. lol

Actually I guess I've heard that people just don't respond to revision requests and submission requests but I've never really understood why.
ReplyDeleteI think more than you'd realize authors see revision letters are rejection letters and requests as sort of low-likelihood contacts and figure it's not worth it.
I've heard people here describe the 'rejection letter' (or maybe not here on Seekerville but on writer's loops) and had others say, "That's not a rejection, that's a revision letter."
Maybe it's rooted in dejection or expecting the worst. Or getting rejected so many times you just assume it happened again.
I love Seekerville and always get so much from your lessons. In the last post, Debby Giusti discussed the "writing fast" method and referred to her AlphaSmart 3000. I've noticed a few mentions of this (AlphaSmart) recently. Without initiating a selling campaign or stepping on toes, can anyone give me the yeahs and nays of the AlphaSmart? I'm not familiar with it. What's the advantage? Love you all and blessings to you!

ReplyDeleteRebecca, the Alpha is a word processor with a tiny, four-or five-line screen. Few editing functions. Delete by backspacing, on mine. So you can't edit as you go. You just write and thus move forward with your story. The Alpha holds 8 files that, when downloaded to a PC, equates to about 25 manuscript pages per file. It's lightweight. Portable and works on 3 AA batteries. It was originally made for special ed kids so it's durable and seemingly unbreakable. Easy to tuck in a purse or tote and take anywhere.

ReplyDeleteThis was so helpful to me. I have done NaNo for the past three years, and I won't be doing it this year (and I'm already missing it) as I will be editing and revising the books I've written the past two years for NaNo. I've combined two things I've learned from Tina and from a fellow GRW member: I've learned I write best in twenty to twenty-five minute spurts, and I can go for a while as long as I get breaks between those spurts. If I'm really in a writing groove and it's a scene that I've really thought about on a treadmill or in traffic, then I will sometimes disregard the timer and (to use a cliche) strike while the iron is hot. I am also learning to have my A list, B list, C list, D list (thank you, Tina).
