Have a great Saturday everyone.
My favorite pithy quote - Writers write.
ReplyDeleteI saw that as the title of a craft book and thought yup, that says it all in 2 words.
That's Jack Bickham Cate Nolan.
ReplyDeleteElmore Leonard: Try to leave out the part that readers tend to skip.
ReplyDelete“Abandon the idea that you are ever going to finish.”- John Steinbeck

ReplyDeleteJoss Whedon: Whatever makes you weird is probably your greatest asset.
ReplyDeleteThese quotes are great. :)
ReplyDeleteThe only one coming to mind off the top of my head is more instructional, but it's all I've got at 11:00 at night. :)
"Tell the story between the quotes." Rachel Hauck.
Thanks for a great WE, Tina!

“What is written without effort is in general read without pleasure.” Samuel Johnson

ReplyDeleteI became a writer to give the voices in my head something productive to do. Tshirt I have.
It's no wonder truth is stranger than fiction. Fiction has to make sense. Mark Twain

ReplyDelete—Samuel Johnson
I have more, but I'll cut to my favorite (and one of my favorite authors!):
“If it sounds like writing, I rewrite it. Or, if proper usage gets in the way, it may have to go. I can’t allow what we learned in English composition to disrupt the sound and rhythm of the narrative.”
—Elmore Leonard

If Moses were alive today he’d come down from the mountain with the Ten Commandments and spend the next five years trying to get them published.

Well it's not exactly pithy and I have no idea who it should be attributed to but...
ReplyDelete"A writer is a writer not because she writes well and easily, because she has amazing talent, or because everything she does is golden. A writer is a writer because, even when there is no hope, even when nothing you do shows shows any sign of promise , you keep writing anyway."
These are so fun! I'm going to one of my Yoda faves: "No! Try not. Do or do not. There is no try."
ReplyDeleteLOVE YODA MIGHTILY.
And Einstein's rogue definition on insanity: "doing the same thing over and over again and expecting different results."
Smart dude!
Go forth and write, my friends! And readers... GOD BLESSED US WITH YOU!!!! Thank you!
I brought coffee and Gummy's orange cookies.... and they're frosted and everything and we'll share Gummy's love.... Gummy is a friend's mother who is now in a memory care unit and she's not quite sure how she got there, but she's pretty sure it was a PLOT.... and she's waging counter-attacks to re-gain her freedoms...
ReplyDeleteThe cookies are from more genteel times in Gummy's life, before it all got jumbled into a mass of decades-old confusion.
Try some! You will love them!

ReplyDeleteSome GRRREAT ones...
ReplyDeleteI'm laughing, empathizing and nodding!
Since I write middle grade, here's CS Lewis, as quoted by our own Vince Mooney ~ “No book is really worth reading at the age of ten which is not equally – and often far more – worth reading at the age of fifty and beyond.” C. S. Lewis

Write what God gives you and see where he takes it. If you don't write you have nothing to see where it'll go.
Great quotes! I love Dorothy Parker's quote, especially when I'm struggling with a story.
ReplyDeleteShe said, "I don't like writing. I like having written."
At times, so true!
Thanks all for the wonderful quotes!! This is on my desk:
ReplyDeleteWhether you think you can, or think you can't, you're probably right. Henry Ford. Perhaps a variation of his words. But however they were said, the truth rings!

Happy Birthday, Tina! We love you!!!
Okay, first I have to say if a clean/dirty house were an indication of how much writing one does, I should have about fifty completed manuscripts! ;)

ReplyDelete"BAD SPELLERS OF THE WORLD UNTIE!"
ReplyDeleteLOL ... LOVE THIS!!! Especially after I edited my soon-to-be released novel, Love Everlasting, which I'm pretty sure STILL has typos despite nine sets of eyeballs on it!!
EXCELLENT WE, Tina, but I've got LOTS of company for the weekend, so I'm going to save those great links for Sunday evening when I'm too exhausted to do anything but read ...
Hugs and Happy Weekend, all!!
Julie
We need to get a copy of all of these! My latest favorite quote is...
ReplyDelete"To battle to the end and never give up. You could call it optimism or stubbornness. Here, they call it TEXAS FIGHT.”
(TEXAS FIGHT is the Univ of Texas at Austin's fight song!)
Then there's...
“Impossible is not a fact. It's an opinion. Impossible is not a declaration. It's a dare. Impossible is potential. Impossible is temporary. Impossible is nothing.” Muhammad Ali
Which of course leads to..
“Jesus looked at them and said, ‘With man this is impossible, but with GOD all things are possible.’” Matthew 19:26 (NIV)

Not short- but I love them!! :) :)
Oooo, pass the birthday cake!! Happy birthday again, Tina!!
ReplyDeleteStephen King is too scary for me to read, but he gives birth to great writing quotes:
"Amateurs sit and wait for inspiration, the rest of us just get up and go to work."
Fun WE this week. :)
GREAT WE, Miss T!! (our BIRTHDAY GIRL!!)
ReplyDeleteJust read that Debby Giusti is proclaiming today as TINA'S Birthday Party, so I'll add some goodies to the food table!! (My usual, LOL - - Pecan Pie, Peach muffins, Pecan Praline Cookies, and my old standby, Georgia Peach Cobbler) ;)

and
Out of sight, out of mind.
Hmmmmmm a quote for all occasions. :)
Yay, VINCE is back and we're thrilled!!!
ReplyDeleteBUT . . . What's this about bashing us messy housekeepers???
AND . . . there's a HUGE difference between "dirty" and "cluttered."
ReplyDeleteJust sayin'.
What a great WE, and the pithy quotes are fabulous.
ReplyDeleteThis has been used already, but it inspires me the most.
“A professional writer is an amateur who never quit.” – Richard Bach
Doesn't that make you want to keep writing and not give up?
I always thought it was "Absence makes the heart grow FODDER."
ReplyDeleteI agree, Jackie. I love that one.
My house is cluttered and not clean. Not dirty. But not clean. Finish proposal and then I get to shampoo carpets this week. I'm so EXCITED.
Quote of Robert J. Morgan (pastor/author) in his book The Strength You Need:
ReplyDeleteI believe God has an appointment easel set up in heaven for each of us, that He has a daily agenda for each of our lives.
I am loving all these quotes! Can I add one more?

John Steinbeck: 6 tips on writing, and a Disclaimer: “Abandon the idea that you are ever going to finish.”
Neil Gaiman: 8 Rules of Writing: “You have to finish things — that’s what you learn from, you learn by finishing things.”
Points to ponder, no? Happy rest of your weekend everyone!
I already messed up a quote, that last one is suppose to be this~ scratch the one above!
ReplyDeleteNeil Gaiman: 8 Rules of Writing: “Perfection is like chasing the horizon. Keep moving.”
Be careful of reading health books. You may die of a misprint.

Stephen King
What a great WE!!
ReplyDeleteNot sure who said it first, but I saw it first here on Seekerville:
"Don't get it right, get it written!"
Changed the way I write. It's one of the few quotes I wrote on a post-it and stuck over my desk :)
Jackie Smith! How interesting you should say that.
ReplyDeleteI have index cards with verses and prayer needs. One says, "Show me what's on today's agenda, Lord."
Funny, or not so funny how we plan the day around our agenda and not His. Still learning.
Evelyn Hill, Barbara Burke! Welcome to Seekerville and good quotes!! Brava!
ReplyDeleteTrixi. I love those, Google or not!
Meg Brummer. That should be tattooed on all of us. I believe that was Terri Blackstock who said that when she visited.
Heidi, I love Douglas Adams!
ReplyDelete“A learning experience is one of those things that says, 'You know that thing you just did? Don't do that.”

ReplyDeleteGreat WE, TINA!!! Did you do something fun yesterday, besides preparing the WE? Another bunch of great links to check out! Thank you
ReplyDeleteI'm a simple man. My quote is "BICHOK" or "Butt in Chair - Hands on Keyboard." (Thankfully, spellcheck doesn't try to correct the acronym.)

And I'm not sure if anyone else posted it, but I still love: There are 3 rules to writing a great novel. Unfortunately no one knows what they are. (I'm thinking it was from Somerset Maugham?)
Hugs, Patti Jo
Patti Jo, that's funny!
ReplyDeleteAll right, I'm going to one of my Ruthy faves when your knickers get in a twist... "Pull up your big girl panties and move on."
And how about this from Lucy Maude Montgomery when raising children takes precedence? "I'm writing living epistles now."
That line gave me hope through the years of raising six kids and working two jobs because if Anne of Green Gables could do it... so could Ruthy!!!
Write. Right?
ReplyDeleteOh wow, I love so many of these quotes! Need to copy some of these down. DEBBY used one of my favorites: "I don't like writing. I like having written." Dorothy Parker. Sums up my feelings pretty well most days :-)

This one is for Vince:
ReplyDeleteIn Italy, for 30 years under the Borgias, they had warfare, terror, murder, and bloodshed, but they produced Michelangelo, Leonardo Da Vinci, and the Renaissance. In Switzerland, they had brotherly love, they had 500 years of democracy and peace -- and what did they produce? The cuckoo clock.

Heather did a great job being pithy!!!
ReplyDeleteShe wrote, "Write. Right?"
Heather, you get the leftover birthday cake...and the balloons. They'll last for days, maybe weeks. Enjoy!
A scene from the upcoming movie, SPIDER-MAN REBOOT, was filmed over the lake behind my house last night. So fun to watch! Helicopters, stadium lights turning the dark lake into near daylight, boats, props of a playground lakeside, artificial plants and portable light poles.
ReplyDeleteThey told me I was too close to the water at one point and would be seen in the filming. :) Yes, I did move back into the underbrush.
The big scene seemed to be filmed between 1:30 and 2:30 AM. Chopper overhead. Lights that lit up my living room. Lots of action. By 4 AM, the set was quiet!
Can't wait to see the movie and spot my backyard! :)

ReplyDeleteVince, I'm hoping to visit Orange Beach this fall...the water will probably be too cool for swimming, but I always enjoy long walks on the beach. Glad you and your sweet wife could take some time off! :)
Kathryn, enjoy that little one! I'm green with envy! :)
ReplyDeleteA pretty shade of green, mind you!

Hi Tina:
ReplyDeleteYou made a very astute comment when you quoted:
"In Italy, for 30 years under the Borgias, they had warfare, terror, murder, and bloodshed, but they produced Michelangelo, Leonardo Da Vinci, and the Renaissance. In Switzerland, they had brotherly love, they had 500 years of democracy and peace -- and what did they produce? The cuckoo clock."
And yet, doesn't it all get down to the quality of life? Where would you have rather lived and raised a family? Florence or Switzerland? And note: you would still have had the benefit of the Renaissance and all the great artists as well as a great supply of cuckoo clocks in Geneva.
Vince
lahlah...love Julie Cameron. Do you have The Artist's Way? An excellent book.

ReplyDeleteok - Seekers
SOMEBODY should compile these and make a Seekerville book of writing quotations - or some such.
I'd buy one. :)
Happy weekend everybody, although it is almost over. I had such a busy week and the weekend has been just as busy. Barely able to check in with Seekerville lately. I hope this week will be better.
ReplyDeleteI'm too lazy to look up some quotes, so I'm going to paraphrase what Spartan women used to tell their sons and husbands: Come back with your books or in them.
ReplyDeleteDebby, I do have The Artist's Way, along with several of her other books. She's so inspiring!
