Is LiveStream Video (Periscope and Facebook Live) right for you?

Hello Seekerville peeps,

You always feel like an extended family of sorts.

Cara Grandle here.

Julie Lessman invited me to be her guest today. I’ve never guest blogged before, so picture me with knees knocking together.

I met Julie at the first annual Christian Fiction Readers Retreat 2016 and again at the ACFW. (She is just as passionate about life and redemption in person as she is in her books.)

After spending a little time fan-girling, we started chatting about the possibilities of Periscope and Facebook Live for authors. She thought you might like to see what the whole live-video thing was about too.

Have you seen livestream, interactive videos popping up on all your social medias?

Have you thought about trying live-video yourself?

If you just broke into a sweat, groaned aloud and felt the need to climb back into bed and hide under your blankets, hold on. Don’t shut the front door yet. Live-video is a powerful tool. It’s an easy way for your readers to see the authentic you behind your books. And in case you forgot… YOU ARE INTERESTING. All those books you read, all that research you do, all those places you’ve been, all those things you’ve lived through and most importantly all those things you’ve learned along the way become a great sharing ground.

On top of that, live-video is a healthy, productive way to break out of the “friends and family bubble”.

All it takes is a moment of courage and pressing one little button and new folks can see your face and hear your story. And if you give them some encouragement, some craft, and a little friendship, they will champion you and their loyalty will be fierce. The people you gather will fast become readers and reviewers waiting with bated breath for your next book.

I’m here to help you test the waters and decide if these new tools, Facebook Live and Periscope, would be a good fit for you.

Well, I’m at least here to show you what the hoopla is all about so you can make an educated decision for yourself. I’ll guide you through the process of both applications with step-by-step instruction…in a video. Ha ha, how about that?

If you’ve been tempted to live-video but you’ve been nervous to begin in front of your already existing following, I can show you what to expect and what to watch out for so you won’t make a fool of yourself in front of your audience and launch teams.

Before we begin, let’s make sure that you know what I’m talking about. Here is a sample of a Facebook Live Session:

And here is a sample of a Periscope
(Periscope is its own application like Facebook and Instagram. It is affiliated with Twitter)

But you say, “There is no way I’m going to “Go Live.” It would be worse than speech class in high school.” (And all the introverts groaned in unison and dove back under their covers.)

That may be true, but before you decide to pass, you should learn the details. Some of the most successful Periscope-ers and Facebook Live-ers that I follow are introverts. These tools allow you to clearly speak your mind to a crowd with a sense being only with one or two people. You can collect and gather more and more people, but it always feels like it’s just you talking to a friend.

The hardest part is hitting that “Go Live” button for the first time. (Both apps require a smartphone to access them. You can watch both on a computer, but in order to video you need the phone.)

So here is how they work:

This is a 33-minute video that teaches you all you need to know to get started on Periscope.
Learn Periscope Video

And this is a 16-minute video that teaches you all you need to know about broadcasting on Facebook Live.

Learn Facebook Live Video

After watching these How-to videos, would you ever consider trying Facebook Live or Periscope? Why or why not? (I can’t wait to hear your take.)

If you already Periscope or Facebook Live, feel free to share that in the comments too. Help us find you.

GIVEAWAY:

Thank you again for sharing your time with me. I look forward to seeing a few of your beautiful faces on Periscope or Facebook Live in the very near future. You can do it. Be brave.

I pray a blessing on all your 2017 writers dreams and goals.
I’m so glad He has the outcome of our life-stories in His hands.

  1. Hi Cara:

First off: none of the links you gave work for me except the last one "Link to Course". Usually this is only a few minute fix.

BTW: I love the photo on the "Link to Course" page. It is totally attention getting and interest holding! I think it would make an awarding winning cover art entry -- especially if the book had something to do with 'the woman with the billion dollar smile'.

Question: each advertising medium is best at doing something which is why each exists. Have you come to any conclusions what type of event, marketing, or social gathering live streaming would be best at achieving? In other words, what would be the 'highest and best use' for authors?

Thanks. This is very interesting. I can't wait for your links to go active.

    1. Hello Vince, Cara here.
I contacted the folks behind Seekerville and told them there were some glitches. I'm sure when they find my message they will get right to it.
The picture on the course is me. So thank you for your patience and your compliment.
I've seen several non-fiction writers pull quite a lot of traffic from their online video platform over to their website. The crossovers from information to purchasing is pretty great.
Nonfiction writers usually have things for sale as well as their books. So that makes the fiction writers approach a little bit different. They usually begin with showing their audience inside secrets and tips from their own writing journey and then sharing went new launches are coming and things like that. It's pretty much the same as blogging except you can talk to the people and engage them in every day conversation. This makes the people watching feel valued and important which often translates into a power fan. The power and will follow you through many book launches and even purchase other things or books that you direct them to.
If it's a good fit for you it's usually a great opportunity.

    2. VINCE AND CARA!!! Please accept my apologies for the bum links!! Cara was very diligent to give me fancy embedded links, but since I am technically illiterate, I apparently don't know how to insert them into the HTML format of the blog, only the compose section, which obviously doesn't work! And since links don't work anyway when I test them in preview, I didn't know. :(

All should be fixed now, however, so onward and upward!!

      Hugs,
      Julie

  2. Welcome to Seekerville, Cara!Delighted to have you and your enthusiasm here.

I brought vanilla scones to share!!!

I really like public speaking after taking some classes, but this is a lot like Facetime on my iPhone. The camera is not kind. I think that the best use would be at a multi people event so the focus in not just on me and perhaps a chat. But my face as the only thing on the screen. Egads, I'll leave that to the beautiful young faces like yourself. :)

Thanks so much for sharing. I am going to check this out. Might be fun to do at an ACFW or RWA conference, right??

    1. It's very fun to do with the conferences. And do share that lovely scone, please.
There are a couple tips and tricks for using the camera in a way that is flattering.
Since the video links aren't working, I'll share a one here.
First it's all about the angle. Get a small tripod or do whatever you have to do to get the camera up. There are a lot of successful periscope and Facebook live folks who could still use that trick.
And make your background interesting. Give them something to look at as well as you. After a few times you'll see it's not that big a deal. I hope you do try it.

But the truth is, we are our hardest critic. I see so many different types of people from different walks and seasons of life. Some as ugly as sin. Lol (Lord forgive me.) But the package doesn't matter much if the content is interesting and is what I need. There are some cool folks out there.

    3. Tina, thanks for the scones! I'm really falling down on the job today with our cyber sustenance, so apologies AGAIN after the link debacle!! I am adding my favorite scones -- cinnamon crunch and orange glaze, along with choice of coffees, teas, and juices, so dig in!

      Hugs,

  3. Hi Cara,
Welcome to Seekerville! You did great. I've never heard of Periscope before, but I love Twitter. IF, I did this, do you think there would be greater turnout with Facebook since more people are familiar with FB?

    Thanks!

    1. Thank you Jackie,If you have an established following on Twitter then those people would get notified when you began broadcasting if you chose that option. There are more people on Facebook so that is something to consider for sure, But there are a few distinct differences in how these to applications work. I go into it at length in the videos.
When the links are fixed, I'll make sure you find out, so you can get your answers.
I encourage you to try both options to feel the differences. Let me know if you do.

  6. Hi Cara! I loved this post. I love that you noted that many of the people you follow are introverts. We tend to think only extroverts can grab the mic but that's not true.

I've been thinking a lot lately about growing an audience so when I eventually publish, I'll actually have someone to announce it to. 😁

FB Live was how my sister-in-law and her friend grew their platform. It exploded actually, when they began their live "shows." All they do is talk about motherhood in their car, or their kitchen or wherever they happen to be. They're raw, honest and unfiltered. (They go by "Cat & Nat" if you're interested. Nat is my sister-in-law.)

Her advice was to be yourself, keep it short and post consistently. So, they do it every week day at noon. So, even if you only go live twice a month, pick the same day and time.

I'd love to have my name thrown in the hat for your class. Thanks!

    1. So neat that you have seen an audience built this way. It starts slow and it takes a little bit to get used to being on the screen, but it's very worth it.

    2. WOW, JOSEE, that is SO cool about the "Cat & Nat" show your SIL and friend have going on -- VERY impressive! Especially with it being an everyday commitment -- HOLY COW!!

I checked them out, and it seems they do most of their vlogs together, so they must live close to each other, I guess? Or maybe they meet weekly and do all seven vlogs at the same time? And who the heck is shooting the video -- the kids???? ;)

      Inquiring minds want to know!!

  7. Also, I wanted to add, I used to teach high school Spanish and I owned my own calligraphy business for a few years, mostly taking jobs for weddings. I'd like to know how on earth you do all that with 5 kids. (You'll have to come back to Seekerville to share those tips!)

    1. Well, if you did calligraphy as a business, I can guarantee you it was a more excellent calligraphy and what I can do. Mine is purely recreation.

  8. GOOD MORNING, SEEKERVILLE, AND WELCOME, CARA!!

First of all, I apologize for the bad links -- my bad, not Cara's, but all fixed now, I hope!

Cara, as a person who blew her speech teacher against the wall with my CDQ-ness in college (he claimed in all his years of teaching speech, I was the only student he had to tone down!), I am always intrigued by the camera, so I truly think I would love Periscope or Facebook Live and fully intend to give it a shot. So THANK YOU for dragging me into the 21st century (albeit kicking and screaming!!) ;)

  9. I could do it if I had to. I mean, I'm here today and I never thought I could do that. I am not published yet, but would consider this for my tool kit when that day comes. Thank you, CARA.
Actually, this is probably better for the introvert than doing a book signing in a store or even a library reading. I book-signed in Barnes & Noble once when I had a recipe in a national cookbook, and It Was Traumatic. On so many levels.
Yes, I would do this. So many resources!

  10. Hi Cara:

I don't know anything about video over the internet. When you do a live stream do viewers also live stream back? If so do they do it by smart phone or by computer with a tv camera?

What things are better live than prerecorded? I would think the best things would be somewhat newsworthy.

    1. taking the viewer on a tour of the actual location of your book?
    2. reading sections of your book with emotion instead of just having the text on your website?
    3. brainstorming session with several authors? (it would be nice to have several authors with their own websites promoting the event a good deal ahead of time.)
    4. a trip to a live critique group?
    5. a live interview with your CP? Your agent?
    6. interview with a beta reader who just read your book?
    7. showing you at an awards event as the awards are being announced? And you are up for one?
    8. any live event people are interested in and which you are going to anyway? Especially events they may fear getting into like a club meeting for public speakers.

BTW: I lived three years in Italy and 'Cara' means sweetheart and/or expensive. And 'Cara mia' means it's getting serious. : )

    1. I can see your live-video mind awakening. That list is a great list for things to do on live feed. Both periscope and Facebook live require the person filming to have a cell phone right now. You can watch videos when they are live from your computer, but you can't create them.
A viewer can view on the computer or on a smartphone. But some of the options for participating are limited.

Most name definition books say my name means friend....so does that mean I could be your next expensive friend. Hummmm

      Delete
    2. Vince, that's a great list of ideas. I can also see doing a weekly or bi-weekly newsletter type video on my Page instead of (or more frequently than) a pretty-graphics email version.

And Cara, while I've been dipping my toes into this pond, I have a feeling you're tip-toeing up behind me and about to shove me into the deep end. After I watch the tutorials a few more times and get a tripod... Thanks for the thorough information!

  11. CARA, welcome to Seekerville. You've given us all we need to go live, but I'll admit I'd be scared silly. Odd since I don't mind talking to small writing groups or book clubs. Still it is a great option for authors. I watched Susan Elizabeth Phillips talk live and she was of course funny. Though I'd seen and heard her speak at RWA workshops, I got a greater sense of connection with her as a person. There's something intimate about live-video.

    1. And can you imagine what it would be like if a cluster of you established authors got on Periscope together. I often see little sub communities built. Thousands of folks at your fingertips without having to leave your house. They will often do something called a scope-train. That is where one person gets on and starts scoping and then passes all there viewers to the next person in line. Usually they all answer one question or talk on one topic, but it makes it possible to quickly share your readers/followers with others. A community is pretty impressive on periscope.

    1. Totally new realm. When I think of all the crazy words that I use today that didn't exist even two years ago my head swims. Snap Chat is a fun live video feed, but the bummer about it for authors is that it can't be made into permanent content. If you look at my website you can watch my Skype-scope author interviews from last year. Anything you do on both Periscope and FBL can be kept as permanent content. Several of my interviews have been made into blog posts for the author I interview. So they come on show with me and end up with their own blog post content... win-win. The possibilities are endless. I'm so excited to share this with folks who have audiences. Mine is such a baby one. hehe.

  21. Hi Cara:

I watched the videos and they're very informative but they seem a tad harder to learn than Scrivener! (It's really helpful to know Myra.)

What do you think of live streaming a book signing? There are untold readers who can't get to any book signings and may never have even been to one. And not just any book signing. For added leverage, when you know from past experience that many people will show up, hold a book signing where the proceeds go to a worthy charity. This is great publicity for the bookstore and the author. Debby Giusti does this (without live streaming as of yet) and people can order books over the phone. Since these books make nice gifts multi-sale orders are encouraged. Debby gets very large turnouts. If this is the first time this is done in a town, it could get coverage on the local tv and living section of the newspaper.

I always try to reach 10 to 100 times more potential customers from the publicity of a book signing than the signing itself secures.

I checked a few dictionaries and "Cara" means friend in Irish, beloved in Latin, expensive in Spanish and loved or cherished, (sweetheart, darling) in Italian. (I've only used 'cara' in Italian in real conversations. I also like carisima -- the most loved or sweetest sweetheart-but be careful, the woman might want to know about those other lesser sweethearts.) I did see a saying in Spanish "Que cara!" -- "How cheeky! (impudent)". Have you heard this in class? I think in English this might best be translated as "How rich!".

    1. I think if I was to use Periscope for a book signing, I would have someone in charge of holding the camera and maneuvering it and interacting with the audience. To do the book signing and just have it sit in a tripod or something might be boring. Using Periscope to get the word out would be amazing. But I've seen folks use live-video for showing guest speakers at a conference, fundraiser events like cutting the ribbon, sports events and business launches. Periscope is my preference of the two options and I do go into my reasons why inside the videos, but both have their place. I'm excited to see what you come up with.
I know I love witnessing things I would otherwise not be able to like concerts or other live events.
I promise it's not as easy as it seems when you try to learn all about it at one sitting.

Interesting about my name. The Spanish phrase doesn't come up in my high school classes, because "la cara" means face and it's one of the student's vocabulary words right at the beginning of the year.

    2. VINCE SAID: "It's really helpful to know Myra."

HA! Tell me about, mister! She is my go-to gal for whom I am SO grateful!! And Cara is, too, I'm sure, because Myra fixed what I botched in this post. :|

      Hugs,
      Julie

    3. You guys!!!!

I told you--I know just enough about this stuff to be dangerous!!! Ask for my assistance at your peril!!!

    4. Well, I'm sure glad you did, Myrna. This would have been hard to explain without the tutorials.

This is so much fun. I've been smiling all day. (And coming up with ideas for the Peri-train Fiction style. Shhh don't tell Julie.)

    7. Hi Julie:

I always enjoy it when you quote from one of my comments. I've long felt that until a comment is quoted by Julie Lessman it remains but a footnote. :"\

  22. I've never thought of doing a live video. I do think it would be easiest to "break into" live video in a closed group.

    1. That's where Inuse FBL the most. Soooo helpful for keeping folks engaged. And you can say so much more in a few minutes than you can type without getting too long for folks to read. Plus, you can surprise pop in with insider information.

  23. Hi, Cara. My takeaway from the brave new world of Facebook Live is to use closed groups; Periscope looks like a wonderful platform and I will go through some of your creation at my leisure. Please consider me for your staycation please!

  24. Hi Cara. How fun to see you here. This is an area I have never tried, and one that scares me to death. The only time I've been on Periscope was with you at the ACFW Conference. Thinking of doing this on my own - terrifying. lol I will have to watch your video.

    1. Sweet Nancy, maybe you could save up your courage and go live for a special event like a book launch.
If it isn't some sort of enjoyable then this isn't a good fit and shouldn't be concerning at all.

    2. Hey, NANCY, SO great to see you here, my friend! Miss you and FHL, but hope to re-up next year. :)

And if I plan to do it, kiddo, YOU can do it -- you're a lot younger and likely a lot smarter than this old gal!!

      Hugs,
      Julie

  25. Cara, welcome! I've been terrified of using either of these apps, so I really appreciate any info and encouragement you can give! I can't watch the videos right now but will certainly do so later.

You know, it just hit me that I did once do something like Periscope that RWA sponsored with the RITA finalists. And of course, that night my internet went out. I had to rush to the church, get the custodian to let me in, and use the internet access there. LOL It was rather stressful to say the least. I think next I'd love to take my time and practice at home first. :)

  26. I don' have a Facebook (or Twitter) account, but this is an interesting thing to consider in the case that I ever get social media (which knowing my parents probably won't happen until I'm 18+ and legally an adult- oh well, gives me more time to write until then). Thanks for this informative post.

    1. Having your time protected from social media is truly not a bad thing. And think, Roseanna White published a book she wrote when she was 13. It faced many revisions, but it most certainly counted.
      Blessings on your writing journey.

  27. Cara, so sorry I'm late getting to the blog today! How fun to see your sweet face smiling back at me from my computer! Meeting you at CFRR was a real treat. Love your enthusiasm. Thanks for being with us today and bringing all this great information.

    You're amazing!

  28. Back again, finally. And got to watch the videos. Very helpful. (And you nailed Debby Giusti. She's grace under pressure). You have been so generous with your time with us today, Cara. Thank you so much. I look forward to real time meeting you!

  29. This is so interesting. I participated in a live chat with Johnnie Alexander and Diana Brandmeyer. The live chat was hosted by Johnnie's daughter and it was so cool.

I enjoyed it and even though I had some glitches on my part (slower internet), the other three were able to keep the chat "ball" in the air until I got back online.

It was fast and furious, and fun. I realize this was a little different to the FB live and Periscope ones described here. I'd love to carve out more time (and find some bravery!) to do livestream video. :)

They were cool but they went out of business when Facebook Live jumped in.

  30. Crazy day. I actually got a chance to read your post earlier Cara. Thank you for all the great information. I just got a chance to look at the videos now.
I've done Facebook Live with my radio station, when we are working concerts and events. I like it a lot because we can't keep doing everything over and over again until someone thinks it is perfect.
I've never really thought about doing any of these alone. Thank you for the encouragement and wonderful information!

    1. Perfection is overrated. Lol

Actually, that is a huge deal in the blogger/entrepreneur land. People are getting pretty done with the image of perfection.
The real-life of Periscope has been a real boost to some and a few others who were really out of order accept on their blogs, behind their computers and photos have struggled. Live video tells the truth ready or not.

  32. Well done, Cara!

As a reader, I have to admit a great interest in watching my favorite writers' Facebook live events. I did watch some Periscopes for one set of authors but Facebook is more convenient. And YouTube even more convenient, just fyi. May God bless you and all of Seekerville!
