It's too hot.
I'm too busy.
The kids are out of school.
The kids are going back to school and need this, that and the other thing.
The kids are driving me crazy.
The sun is up too late and I can't sleep.
The sun is up too early and I can't sleep.
The sun is up.
(Get it? SO MANY EXCUSES FOR NOT MAKING YOUR DREAM COME TRUE!)
I'm going to help you. I, along with a couple of very sweet friends, am hosting a Virtual Writers Retreat at the Rocky Ridge Ranch in Northwestern Idaho next month.
Come see the rolling hills meld into mountains majesty.... Mount farm-broke horses and explore the distant hills and the nearby trails. See Cookie as he makes his famous Campfire Snake Stew and Chicken Biscuit Pot Pie..... and Laraby (Laraby is a woman, she had Very Western Parents) will be in charge of desserts and pastries and in-between meal snacks... including homemade Rocky Ridge Dustbuster Ice Cream, a ranch favorite.
You don't need a printed invitation.
You don't need to pay one red cent.
You don't need to be accountable to anyone for what you're doing or where you're going because the Rocky Ridge Ranch lies no farther than your imagination...
What you DO NEED is to give yourself a little time each day to be inspired, to chat, to laugh, to throw out ideas... to do whatever it is you need to get you back on track.
I know summer can be rough. I know holidays can be rough. Hey, winter can be tough...
And then you throw in illness, family emergencies, family celebrations, Holy days, Sundays, shopping days, and before you know it, your writing hasn't taken a back seat... it's literally fallen off the bus.
So join us in August.
WHEN? August 13 -20, 2017
WHERE? Rocky Ridge Ranch, Ghost Falls, Idaho
COST? Nothing but time, baby!
WHAT TO WEAR? Bring imaginary ranch-type clothing, nights are cool, blue jeans, shirts, hoodie, boots, sneakers.
HOW DO I SIGN UP? E-mail loganherne@gmail.com and tell Ruthy you want to sign up.
ARE YOU SURE THAT'S ALL I HAVE TO DO???? I am reasonably certain because (Ruthy leans closer....) it's "virtual". That means pretend. Make believe... but the encouragement is So Very Real!!!
Last month I got an e-mail from Barbara Wallace, an RWA Director-at-large.... She was researching out of the norm ways of motivating writers and she stumbled on our past virtual retreats... so I told her about them, then I realized we hadn't done one in a very long time.
So I'm rectifying that.
If you've stumbled on your writing goals, there is half a year left... come to the "retreat" and get re-inspired.
If you've let your dreams take a back seat to everyone elses, come to the retreat and get some time management tips.
If you've thought about developing a better relationship with other authors but have little time, come to the retreat and see that we're all in the same boat.
Each day has 24 hours.
My/our goal isn't to stretch that... it's to encourage folks to make the best possible use of it!
Join us as we hang out at the ranch with Shane, Cookie and Laraby.... and whoever else happens to stroll in during the week.
There are no prizes for coming to the retreat... your prize is learning to use time and inspiration that God gave you and putting it to good use as you are able, and as it fits your schedule!
We're all different... but in so many ways, we're the same and it's fun to show that love and support for one another.
E-mail me to sign up and I will put your sweet names on the list of attendees... and let me know in the comments what's holding you back. What's your stumbling block? Is it fear? Lack of discipline? Too much temptation?
Let's talk about why excuses often weigh heavier than reasons... and for everyone who leaves a comment, I'll toss your name into a cowboy hat for a copy of any one of my cowboy books... His Montana Sweetheart, Home on the Range, Back in the Saddle or Peace in the Valley...
Any one of them is guaranteed to put you in the proper frame of mind for an amazing Western vacation!

Award-winning author Ruthy Logan Herne has sold over a million books... and just keeps on writing! She's a pull-yourself-up-by-the-bootstraps kind of gal and figures there's really not much of a secret to this writing gig... you either write the book(s). Or you don't... :) She's got a passel of kids and grandkids, a farm and a part-time job but one of her favorite things is inspiring other writers to buckle down and give it their very best shot... Friend her on facebook, shout out on Twitter or visit her website ruthloganherne.com.... but the best thing you can do for any author at any time is to buy their books! Because Western, romance, thriller, small town, suspense: Whatever the genre: Numbers Talk!
"The kids are driving me crazy." "The sun's up."
ReplyDeleteHAHA.
Wait... I shouldn't be laughing so hard. I've whispered these ones to myself.
So, you can expect an email from me. I've already written it on my calendar!!
I could use a little more personal discipline--like capitalizing on the minutes I spend playing a stupid game on my smartphone WHEN THE ICON FOR SCRIVENER IS RIGHT NEXT TO IT. *whew* Got that confession off my chest...
I have Back in the Saddle, but I would love to be entered for any of the other books! <3
This is a brilliant idea, Ruthy! I look forward to it!
STUPID TEMPTATIONS!!!! Isn't it crazy???? Meg, I'm so happy you can "be there"! :) We'll have so much fun!
DeleteAnd that stupid sun has a way about it, doesn't it? Rising and setting Every Single Day! ;)
Excuses are always something aren't they? The kids will always drive you crazy, the weather will always keep you up, down and all around....etc, etc, etc.
ReplyDeleteI use excuses way too much sometimes myself & I'm not even a writer. Maybe I need to invent a Ruth-a-nator to keep me motivated in those times....yea that will work! I think she could even inspire a sloth to enter the 5K marathon...lol!
You're a great motivator Ruthy and your energy is infectious :-) It's what I love about you! Please toss my name in the old Stetson for a copy of His Montana Sweetheart as I have all the other ones. Thanks so much :-)
P.S. And just in case you didn't see, I had emailed you and sent a PM via Facebook yesterday about a different subject ;-)
DeleteTrixi, I got that e-mail but was on the farm and/or writing yesterday, they do not let me rest this time of year... oy! :) We're good, and I'll get back to you for the fall books... and welcome aboard!
DeleteSelf-motivation is about the best gift a small business person can have. Without it, then work is like... work. We do it, but we don't always find the joy within.
Motivation rocks!
Thanks Ruthy! I'm happy to be aboard, beyond ecstatic really :-)
DeleteAh yes, farm work! I know nothing about it but I'm certain it eats into your time. I honestly don't know how you do it all, makes me exhausted thinking about it. Throw in the littles and it's like wrangling a tornado, lol! I know you love the pace though and you have a precious family :-) I love following along on Facebook, it always brings me a smile!
I smell COWBOY!!!
ReplyDeleteWoo! Hoo!
Thar's cowboys in them thar hills.
What fun!
Her cowboys are to drool over aren't they? And a whole heap 'o trouble to boot!
DeleteTina, #mustlovecowboys, right??? And I can't wait to read your new ranch series... SIGHING AT THE THOUGHT.... because I do love cowboys.
DeleteTina, next time issue a spew alert! You got me on "I smell cowboy", wasn't expecting that, good thing I was able to swallow real fast or else it wouldn't have been pretty.
DeleteRuthy, I kind of want to come and hang out and watch all the writers do their thing, I love being a fly on the wall just listening in, ya'll are so much fun! I'll pass on the snake stew, but the chicken biscuit pot pie and the rocky ridge dustbuster ice crean sound good. I need to find me some cowgirl boots, just in case I find one of those "smelly" cowboys Tina was talking about, lol
Hi Tina:
DeleteI've been around real working cowboys in Amarillo and when you can smell them, that's not good.
Hi Ruth:
ReplyDeleteWhere will the virtual campsite be? Is it here in Seekerville? Is it a Yahoo group? Is it at the Yankee Belle Cafe? Also, is it very far from Sun Valley? If we could hold over just one more day, Sun Valley is going to hold an excellent Great American Solar Eclipse event on the 21st of August. Can't wait.
Vince
Vince, the virtual campsite will be through a combination of a blog and e-mail... You've never been on one of our retreats??? Oh my stars, they're fun, Vince! Think about it, and we can't extend it a day, unfortunately. :( But I can imagine the Sun Valley event will make the news! As well as the solar event itself!
DeleteHi Ruth:
DeleteI don't think I ever really understood how you were doing these retreats. But I'll sign up and learn. They said on the news that Nebraska is going to have one of the best viewpoints to see the eclipse and many bus tours are headed that way. This may be a good time for everyone to drop in and see Mary.
Vince
Where Mary lives isn't in the viewing path of the eclipse, but where I am in Nebraska is! I don't have to go anywhere but my backyard to see it.
DeleteHi Ruth:
DeleteYou may have started something! Jared and Ivanka are at a media conference at Sun Valley right now!
I just sent an email. I hope we can have some scary ghost stories around the campfire to go along with those S'mores. How about the ghost writer who was really a ghost?
Have fun at the retreat everyone. What a great idea.
ReplyDeleteToss my name into the hat thanks.
Mary, will do! And there's nothing that says readers can't come to the retreat... I went and checked the rules and that one IS NOT IN THERE! :)
DeleteIf you don't mind fun writer talk, it would be lovely to have you!
I'll bring the marshmallows, Ruthy! What a great idea!
ReplyDeleteJill, marshmallows will be a great addition! Who's bringing the Hershey bars? And have you ever tried a S'More with Reese's Peanut Butter Cups???
DeleteRuthy, I love this. I enjoyed the last virtual retreat I attended. :) This summer has been crazy with my boys' schedules, and I MISS writing. I am going to sign up for this one. I NEED it.
ReplyDeleteExcuses...life can happen and swirl you till you're dizzy. Then, you get out of the writing habit and it's hard to figure out how to get back into it. Yes, that might just be where I am right now. I'm working on re-establishing consistent habits once again. There's has to be a want-to that's greater than the fears and uncertainties. Following our dreams is worthwhile. Must remember this. :)
Thanks for coordinating this retreat!
Jeanne, you're welcome! I know exactly what you mean, I stopped and started so many times when my kids were young. I didn't manufacture a time every day until youngest was 16.... and then I was determined that my time had come and started getting up in the middle of the night, the habit I keep still.
DeleteWe can help each other. That's what it's all about, right? Supporting one another and realizing there are many broken roads that lead to that end destination!
The retreat sounds wonderful, Ruthy! Plus, I get to see you the day before it starts when we'll both be at the wonderful Christian Fiction Readers Retreat! Woot! Won't that be a special day!!!
ReplyDeleteHow 'bout a few gallons of sweet iced tea to keep us cool as we enjoy the retreat? I'm in!
Debby! I get to see you that Saturday and I can't wait! Beth and I are stopping to meet Tom Terrific, our new farm addition as we cruise through Ohio... and then on to CFRR to see you and all the cool folks attending and helping.
DeleteI'm so excited! It's the only thing I planned to do this summer because summers on the farm have their own plans afoot... but this was something near and dear to my reader-loving heart!
Last year's CFRR was wonderful! I know this year's event will be as well. Won't be long!!!
DeleteHi Ruthy,
ReplyDeleteI'm actually GAINING ground this summer. Left the day job, working part-time, and found I have tons more time for writing. I've been pretty productive so far this summer as far as the actual writing goes. Would like to know more about craft, and need kick in pants about submitting to editors/agents and general motivation in Getting Out There.
This will be fun!
Ruthy, I have "Home On the Range" but would love to win and read either of the other two.
Kathy Bailey
Kathy, I'm so proud of you! I knew you went down on work hours and I'm proud of how you're putting your time to use. Lots of folks gain time but still procrastinate and while the time away... it's back to that self-discipline to take that time and use it to the best of your ability. Go you!!!
DeleteWell it's like you always say, being able to write is a gift and time to do it is a gift. We are honored to be allowed to do this.
DeleteRuthy, I'm in for the retreat, check your e-mail.
ReplyDeleteKB
I SEE LOTS OF E-MAILS! YAYAYAYAYA!
DeleteThis sounds amazing, Ruthy! I'm sending you an email immediately. No need to enter my name, I've read all your books and they're fabulous.
ReplyDeleteThank you so much for doing this! I can't wait.
~ Renee
Renee! Thank you for the sweet compliment, you just made my day!!! And I'm so glad you're in... we will have so much fun!
DeleteAnd I forgot to mention in my post (although I did remember to tell Barb about it) that the late Janet Edgar began this tradition years ago and I loved it... she was so kind! Her only book was contracted while she fought cancer... and was published shortly after her death.
Her kindness has inspired me to be a Janet Edgar kind of person.
Remember that old adage "Preach the Gospel at all times. If necessary, use words." :)
I love that, and if little kindnesses help others, then that's the best help for me!!!
I get such a kick out of stuff like this!
And with good reason. Wise words, indeed. Looking forward to the retreat.
Delete~ Renee
You're starting on my birthday! Can we have a party???? Sing happy birthday round the campfire?
ReplyDeleteSeriously, summer is the one time I don't make excuses. The rest of the year is a struggle for me, but summer is sheer writing bliss time. Except when pesky things like vacation get in the way. Just joking. I'm on vacation now and I've gotten over 12,000 words written since I got here. Loving every minute.
Cate, 12K???? I AM SO PROUD OF YOU!!!! I know school time is tricky for you, I need to convince you to give up cooking and replace it with writing. :)
DeleteCooking is over-rated!!!!
And yes, we can start with a birthday bash!
YES!!!!
Thanks, Ruthy.
DeleteI think I forgot to tell you I saw Home on the Range in Walmart here.
Cate, did you??? That's awesome! I wasn't sure if they were still showing up in stores, the details of the experiment were never laid out for us... so I've been relying on visuals. Thank you!
DeleteAugust 13! What a lovely day for a birthday, Cate Nolan! And the retreat is ending on my wedding anniversary! What a great week!
DeleteCate, you've written 12,000 words on vacation?! You're my inspiration today! Keep up the great work. (And August 13 was my great-aunt's birthday and anniversary date so it's a day that I've always remembered as a special day - hope you have a great day!)
DeleteHow about pie. Can we have pie?
ReplyDeleteDang good pie is my favorite, but I'm sure that's just a local name.
I'm always up for a retreat.
Connie, I guarantee there will be pie. We can have some today and on the retreat, in fact, Laraby makes the best cherry pie known to man!
DeleteConnie, what's in dang good pie? It sounds dang good. ;-)
DeleteRuthy, cherries are my favorite fruit. Love cherry pie!
cherry pie is my favorite!! I'll bring vanilla ice cream to top it off.
DeleteMelanie, it has the texture of buttermilk, but sweeter. It has crushed pineapple and coconut in it. (But you don't taste the coconut or pineapple. Or at least I don't.):)
Deletetexture of buttermilk pie...
DeletePineapple and coconut are two of my favorite flavors! Sounds wonderful. I'll have to look up the recipe.
DeleteRuthy, your retreat sounds awesome. I'd love to join! Do I need to bring anything?
ReplyDeletePlease toss my name in the hat for Peace in the Valley. Would love to win that book!
Throwing your name in for Peace in the Valley and got your e-mail about the retreat... WONDERFUL, SALLY!!!!
DeleteYay!! Thank you so much!
DeleteHere's a hint, Sally: You will LOVE it!
DeleteMarcia
I'm so excited about the retreat. We've got family coming to visit almost back-to-back with a work trip with my husband's company squeezed in between the visits. I'm so excited to be part of the retreat.
ReplyDeleteThanks, Ruthy!
I've read Peace in the Valley, so don't include me in the drawing. It's a great story!
Jackie, summer gets crazy, doesn't it? And it's not like I want to wish our time away or not enjoy the blessing of nice weather.... because we sure appreciate it up here! But it does tend to get folks off course, and I hate to see people give up because they've had a rough couple of months... So this is a great way for us to re-group!
DeleteThank you, Ruthy! I am so excited about this retreat. Virtual, pretend, imaginary... I can do that. :) Plus, get words on the page and encouragement from such a great group of writers... that's awesome!
ReplyDeleteAmy, I'm so glad! It's a load of fun and inspiration and a chance to reconnect with authors and our goals... and maybe some GREAT FOOD!!!! Go Cookie and Laraby!!!
DeleteHi Ruth:
ReplyDeleteHere's what I don't understand: will the retreat take the place of the normal functioning of Seekerville, with its guest bloggers and all, or will Seekerville run the same as always while the retreat is happening off stage?
Does anyone have any retreat stories?
I have a very unusual true story. When I was four or five, very young, my father had to see a very important client who was on retreat for a week. It was a Catholic retreat in the mountains of upper New York.
The place was a huge mansion hidden in a forest. It was all very quiet and for a little while I was left alone in what looked like a very large living room. A man was softly playing the piano.
I walked over to him because the music was so beautiful. For a while I just stood at the edge of the piano watching him. When the song ended he looked down at me but said nothing.
"Are you someone famous?" I asked.
"Well, your father would know who I am. I write songs for plays. Would you like to hear some of my songs."
He then played a few songs that I thought were really good. My father came eventually and quietly shook hands with the piano man and said, "Don't worry, we won't mention that you're here."
I never did find out who he was.
Vince
Vince who had me guessing...
DeleteAny ideas? Do you still recall what he looked like?
This could be the start...or the end of a story.
Wow. I need to know who that man was lol. I feel like I was left hanging, waiting for the big reveal. Thanks for sharing this, Vince!
DeleteNow that's a story, Vince. I love it. Cole Porter? Irving Berlin? Rodgers or Hammerstein? George M. Cohen? Jay Livingston?
DeleteVince, we run the retreat separate from Seekerville and everything in Seekerville stays status quo... Nothing interrupts Seekerville. Well, when we DIE there may be a slight interruption in production, but that's for another day, another topic! :)
DeleteVince, I wish there was some way you could find out who it was!!
DeleteAbout the Retreat:
DeleteThe man was between 30 and 40, he had light brown hair, he wore a button down the front sweater with a white shirt and tie. He was tall and thin. This would have been in 1948 or 1949. My father never told me who it was. I can still remember my grandmother in Garden City saying, "Little pitchers have big ears," whenever us kids entered a room where adults were talking about other people. Well, this is just a problem with true stories.
Retreat Story with Ending
I do have another true retreat story that happened not too long ago. I was going to my very first ACFW, WIN chapter, meeting which is held in a big Methodist church on Saturday mornings. I was late and most of the lights in the church were off. However, there were signs with arrows on them pointing the way down a long hallway. Half way down the hall there were double doors that lead into a big room which was all lit up. I walked in and there must have been 100 women seated in rows facing the podium. Everyone turned around and looked at me.
I said, "Am I too late to join you?"
"Not at all, find a seat and we'll sign you up at the break."
So the lecture went on about the woman's role in the Christian family.
I kept thinking, "What's wrong with the picture? I'm the only man in here and I never thought there were this many romance writers in Tulsa."
I couldn't get up and leave with the speaker still talking. It would seem like an insult. So I waited for the break. At the sign-in table I asked if they were the Christian Writers Group.
"No, this is the Christian Women's Annual Retreat. That writers group meets upstairs right above where we are now." She pointed a finger up at the ceiling.
I thanked her and left and was really late to the writers meeting.
But I did meet Margaret Daley who greeted me in!
Another good story, Vince!
DeleteThat's such a good story, Vince! And I think there's a great story behind the composer... and my imagination can fill in the blanks!
DeleteWhy was he there?
What was his angst?
What pushed him to slip out of his room to play in the great room?
A buttoned sweater is a clue...
Very Mr. Rogers friendly.
I can't believe you never asked who it was. I've known you long enough to know that your curiosity knows no bounds!
The mystery deepens.
Hi Ruth:
DeleteWell, I was not yet in school. Also, the trip was mysterious. It was a mission. My father was being sent to interrupt an important client at a retreat. The mansion looked very old and maybe even haunted in my mind. I'd never seen a house so big. It had a huge living room with lots of sofas and chairs and one piano. It was an upright piano like my grandmother had and I used to bang on! Not a special piano at all. The piano was flush against a wall and not in the middle of the room. No one else seemed to be in the room.
I think everyone else was off doing retreat stuff, which my father said was, 'talking go God'. Very serious business and it was important not to be noisy in this place. But it was not a church. Then I was left alone as my father visited his client in some far off room. He must have thought it was a safe place to leave a little kid. He probably only needed to get some papers signed. But he was gone at least half an hour.
It was also a long drive from Long Island to get there. It was day time of course. The man looked like Matt Kenseth the NASCAR driver. I really think that if people found out he went to that retreat some would come just to talk to him and it would ruin the retreat for others as well as himself. I must have felt I shouldn't even ask who he was.
Of course, when I got home the first thing I did was run to tell my mother that a very famous person played songs he wrote on the piano just for me! It would not have been safe to let me know who he was!
BTW: I was a very curious kid at that age. It was at this same time, before starting first grade, that, on my own, I bought a ticket from Garden City to Bellerose where my aunt lived while visiting my grandmother! The train station was just four houses down from her house and she gave us kids a big fifty cent piece when we visited her! My mother was frantic. My aunt called her the moment I arrived at her house. She must have also lived near a train station! I was curious alright. After that we never got that 50 cents until we were in the car on the way home.
Sounds like fun, Ruthy! Grammar Queen still hasn't gotten over Jake from the last retreat.
ReplyDeleteOh, Jake.... he was a wonderful guy, wasn't he? :)
DeleteThis ranch isn't far from his, so we might hear from Jake!!!
Hey, Ruthy! I'm about to email you and sign up. I have a book due the end of August, and as usual, I'll be cutting it close. LOL
ReplyDeleteSummer always makes me stumble. This summer it's about a million doctor appointments. Seriously, I don't have time to count them all up. So many! My older daughter had her wisdom teeth out last Friday and she's not nearly back to normal. Two more appointments this afternoon. And it's not just that.
I have always prided myself on not watching TV, but lately my kids and even my husband have been tempting me and I've been caving in SO MUCH. I walk through the living room, see what's on TV (I've never allowed them to have TV in their rooms) and end up sitting down and watching it with them, whether it's American Pickers (I can learn history from that show!) or a movie my girls are watching (who can resist watching Princess Bride for the gazillionth time?). Sigh. I'm still only about halfway done with my first draft.
So count me in!
My husband loves American pickers and I think Mike and Frank are cool guys, too! And I hear you loud and clear, I know you tend to be last minute writer, but Melanie, it doesn't matter because your stories are SO STINKIN' GOOD! :) Glad you're on board!!!
DeleteRuthy, I'll just be getting back from my vacation to two of God's most awesome creations--Yellowstone National Park and Montana, so a virtual writer's retreat will get the cobwebs out and inspiration in.
ReplyDeleteMy trouble spots are creating quality time for writing which, of course, stifles my productivity. Procrastination and inner editor are also my best buddies. Hopefully, this retreat will be my healing therapy.
I have all the Stafford brothers books and Their Surprise Daddy, so any other of your books would be welcome in my library.
Email to follow.
Blessings,
Marcia
p.s. Since I lead a Vegan lifestyle, I can offer up a fresh fruit salad and some Spiced Applesauce and Oatmeal Muffins.
We'll love having the vegan menu covered, Marcia! Go you!!!! And yes, I can't wait to get to Yellowstone someday, Dave and I are hoping for this next year. I want to cross country, visit a couple of West Coast sisters and then check out Oregon (Western series) and Idaho (Western Series)... and that will be so much fun. And I will stop and see Jan Drexler on the way! :) Worth the trip right there! And maybe a Connealy sighting!
DeleteRuthie I'm excited. I really need a retreat and can't wait to hang out. A couple questions- is Campfire Snake Stew low carb? And this isn't one of those catch your own food retreats, is it? And- can I bring my own horse? He'd love to get back on the range.
ReplyDeleteMy biggest stumbling block is other peoples' agendas especially when they are people I care about and want to help.
Can I please be in the drawing for His Montana Sweetheart ? I have the other three and love them.
Barb... you will need to have an open mind about the food, but yes, the snake stew is low-carb. Except for the beefy gravy, salt potatoes, sweet potatoes and carrots. Other than that, you're all set, darling!
DeleteAnd yes, bring the horse, make sure he's up to date on Coggins test, we'll enjoy meeting him! :)
And yes, tucking you in for His Montana Sweetheart, the story that got me started writing westerns... Melissa Endlich, it's all her fault! :)
Ruthie, I'm sending my email. My biggest stumbling block right now is trying to prioritize. I am a planning kind of gal so I'm all outta sorts when I can't get my plan to cooperate. And please can I be tossed into the drawing. I'd love any of them!
ReplyDeleteI am still happy dancing for you! Jumping into the air and kicking my heels together! I love having you on the Love Inspired team, Sharee!!!!
DeletePutting you in the drawing and glad you're joining us. It's amazing what can be done in a week... and how much fun it is to work together!
Sharee, are you going to RWA? Seems I heard you would be at ACFW, but I won't be there. Would love to give you a hug in Orlando, if possible!
DeleteDebby, I want that hug!!! I'm not going to RWA this year but it's on my Pretty Please YES list for next year in Denver. :) I will be at ACFW so I'm bummed you won't be there!! :(
DeleteDancing with you Ms. Ruthie! Thank you, thank you! I can't believe it's really happening. Still pinching myself.
DeleteHugs next year in Denver, for sure, Sharee!!! So thrilled for you! And for LI. Glad you're part of the family!
DeleteRuthy, your retreat will be another fun time! How do you plan to crack the whip to help attendees refocus and get back on track?
ReplyDeleteJanet
No whip cracking needed... just TLC and possible mocking. :) Honestly, sometimes it just needs a few days of back-on-track to remember that we CAN DO THIS! And you know how much I love writing, I love it more than chocolate! :) So if this can help us get on the stump and realign the stars of writing above us, I'm all for it!
DeleteAnd good Western food and fiction helps! :)
Do I have to wear cowboy boots and a ten gallon hat? I suppose the boots don't pinch the toes as much when they're virtual and the hat is bit lighter. :-) And we won't be tipping cows ( or tractors) and tip-toeing through the patties.
ReplyDeleteI have every excuse in the book and then some. Although I do admit some of them are on the lame side, some of them are, by my estimation, legit.
having admitted that... I think I will send off that email and see if a virtual outing can give my real and imaginary world a boost.
Tina P
No cow tipping, I think that's such a horrid thing to do to sweet bovines! :)
DeleteTina, I'm glad you're on board and who knows what the effects will be? But if three authors get back on track, I'll consider this a week well spent!
Ruthy, I'm not quite sure how the retreat works but I will go straight to the email and sign up. You must not have done one for awhile because I've been coming to Seekerville for three years now and haven't seen one.
ReplyDeleteI think fear holds me back the most. I start writing and it just doesn't seem like it can be good enough and I stop. Summer should be my productive time because school is out and I don't have my substitute job. But when I have a whole day ahead of me, I just tend to fritter it away. The retreat will come the end of my summer vacation, so should get me in the frame of mind for continuing into the fall.
Please enter me. I don't have any of your cowboy books.
Sandy, you've touched on my reasoning for writers not giving up their outside jobs all year because we tend to be better disciplined with less time.
DeleteI don't know why that is, but it's true in so many cases that there's something to it.
Maybe we fool ourselves into thinking there's extra time... and then we fill it with the "have to do" list that doesn't really have to get done.
We're cagey that way!!!
hi Ruthy
ReplyDeleteI've signed up. I know exactly why I'm not writing, but maybe the Retreat might help me connect what I know I need to do with the get up and go that actually does it. There are days my brain is plumb tired out when I get home from work. I don't think the wee hours of the morning are my prime time for creativity either, but I guess I won't know if I don't try...
Either way, I enjoy your enthusiasm and vigorous "kick-in-the-keister" encouragement.
Now if I can just work on the guilt trips my brain keeps booking...
Deb, that's awesome! And no matter what happens, isn't it fun to have the encouragement and love of like-minded authors? I had to stop writing a bunch of times, you know that... but each step helped me to realize what I wanted to give to this new career and what I needed to do to dedicate myself to success... and piles of rejections were part of that deal, LOL!
DeleteSounds like a great time, Ruthy! I'm glad you're setting this up again. I bet you'll have many attendees!
ReplyDeleteMissy, we should have fun and it gives me a chance to trap people and make fun of them!!!
DeleteDOUBLE WIN! :)
Ruthy, this sounds like so much fun and it's after college gal heads back to school...so yippeee! Heading over in a few to sign up.
ReplyDeleteLOVE the food options, too. Because...eating is my favorite thing. Well, besides writing. Then reading. Then shopping. :)
And...I have the books you mentioned so no need to throw my name in the pile. Pssst... Let me just say...LOVE those Staffords. :)
Oh my stars, Cynthia, I love the Staffords, too! Wasn't that just a great series?
DeleteSIGH... SWOON.... :)
And I love the Idaho ranching series I've got coming up with Love Inspired... (coincidence??? I think not, LOL!) and northern cowboys are my cup of tea. Give me a good blow or a blizzard or a heat wave or grasshoppers.... ay yi yi, there's something amazingly brave about Northern ranches, and when I saw "The Last American Cowboy" I knew I had to write some of these stories!
What a fabulous idea! I emailed you to sign up and am looking forward to our virtual retreat.
ReplyDeleteWhat's holding me back? Major health challenges. God has a reason and I'm trusting Him though.
May God bless you and all of Seekerville!
Phyllis, health is a huge factor... and I do that old-fashioned thing of offering it up to Jesus. We learned as children that our suffering rarely compares to that cross and crown of thorns, so when horrible happens, I try to imagine how much worse that walk to Calvary must have been. How hurt and pained and lost Christ must have been. That gives me strength and it's not a bad strategy to try.... That doesn't mean I'm minimizing our human pain... but it helps me wade through it and emerge on the other side.
DeleteI'm so glad you're "coming"!!! :)
I may not have kids, but I more than make up for it with younger brothers. I have four of them. Mad Hatter and March Hare, the two oldest are away at soccer camp this week which would be great except... they are actually the ones who are helpful 50% of the time and they left behind the tweedles dee and dum. I've been sick all this last week, and I've got books to read to meet my summer reading goals.
ReplyDeleteI'm going on vacation next week and I only have so many more weeks before school starts again and this is going to be my senior year, I'll have college to do...
Sigh, excuses are so much easier to make than books.
HAHAHAHAHAHAH!
DeleteI love you so much!
We had two girls and four boys, too, so I know how crazy it is. Beyond belief, darling, and now that they're all grown they have a few towns and a few states between them... Tweedles Dee and Dum, LAUGHING!!!!!
Yes, it's a contest.
Yes, it's tough.
Go hide in your room, darling.
Very Dickinson/Austen/Bronte!
Hello Ruthy, Oh my, I'm so excited about the retreat in Idaho. Idaho is one of my favorite states for summer fun. They have great winter skiing and sports also, but I'm a woos for the cold. LOL. I do love the gorgeous scenery and interesting geology. It will be fun to explore with you. Thanks for the tips on getting through the summer and still keep up the writing. I need to go back and look at that list again. LOL Have a great day. Hugs
ReplyDeleteSandra, I'm so glad you're joining us for this! Thank you so much for the offer to help and you know I'll take you up on it... It will be wonderful!!! Delightful!!! Marvelous!!!
DeleteHi Ruth:
ReplyDeleteYou may have started something! Jared and Ivanka are at a media conference at Sun Valley right now!
I just sent an email. I hope we can have some scary ghost stories around the campfire to go along with those S'mores. How about the ghost writer who was really a ghost?
I would love a ghost writer who is really a ghost! Perfect casting!!!
DeleteI think that couple is about the cutest, savviest thing since thin nylon stockings so I hope they're having a wonderful time in Sun Valley with those three kids.
I love having babies in the White House!!!
I will be emailing you, Ruthy! This sounds awesome and just what I need to keep myself going!
ReplyDeleteI love your enthusiasm! Let's do this together!!!
DeleteJust what I need. Yes, I'm 'off the bus' right now! And I noticed some partying planned for the first day--the last day is MY birthday! Need to end it with another party! Count me in! (Gotta send that email B4 I procrastinate again!)
ReplyDeleteVicki
Vicki, I'm so glad you came over, we miss you over here! Yes, come on board and let's jump-start into the fall with all systems on "go"!!!
DeleteJust sent the email & hoping it worked (the first one didn't!)
ReplyDeleteAlso, regarding that trip to West coast--don't forget that I live in Oregon! Well, when I'm home.. At the moment I've been home a LOT more this year, so I need to pray it could work out--I would so love a RL Ruth meeting! 😎
Vicki, that's right! You're in Oregon and that's such a BEAUTIFUL STATE!!! That whole PNW amazes me, and what also amazes me is how stinkin' hot central Oregon gets... What's up with that???? Crazy for a state that far north, isn't it???
DeleteYou're on the same latitude line I'm on... NY/MA/NH... So what makes Oregon so hot? What happens to those cooling ocean breezes????
my comment has vanished twice. My comment about how much I've missed here in the last two weeks. It's like blogger is saying, too bad loser, you are OUT
ReplyDeleteWelcome back, Mary. We've missed you. I'm sorry blogger wasn't being nice to you.
DeleteBlogger has been having issues with people. I've spoken to him about it, but he's a stubborn bugger!!! Welcome back, my friend!
DeleteMary: Did you have two Seekerville pages open at the same time? When I have two open, blogger does some very strange things with posts.
ReplyDeleteHey, Vince, be sure to check out my scene ending for "Stranded in a Cabin with a Romance Writer," okay?
DeleteHUGS!
Julie
Hi Julie:
DeleteWow! You really 'get it'. I wish we were a team! The revision is not only professional and polished, it's award winning quality...if only I could revise like that for the rest of the book.
Do you ever do free lance editing?
This is just wonderful. It inspires me to get back to work on that second draft edit.
I'll be studying it a lot more tomorrow.
I would add one more thing: the hero is well versed in romance and I would have him, on seeing the heroine in her enlarged state, rush to her, stand back, say, "You're positively glowing. I've never seen you more beautiful." I think the writers in the audience would melt at such understanding.
Thanks so much! I'm going to print that ending out and post it in my office. Simply wonderful.
Vince
You two are hysterical.....
DeleteRUTHY!!! What a brilliant idea, my friend!! And I've tried to comment on several people's comments, but Blogger won't let me!
ReplyDeleteLAUGHED OUT LOUD at Tina's remark that she "smelled cowboy"!! I'm guessin' that's horses, hay and a little bit of honest sweat.
SHAREE!! I never got around to CONGRATULATING you, my friend on your first sale -- YEE-HAW, girlfriend (spoken in true Rocky Ridge Ranch vernacular) -- I am SOOOO happy for you!!
Mary, I hear you on Blogger playing tricks -- same here!
The nicest thing about a virtual retreat (besides the people, of course) is you can chow down like a bronc buster and never gain a pound! ;)
Hugs,
Julie
We will love the food... and the inspiration (I hope!) :)
DeleteNothing like giving ourselves a do-over. Especially when God gives us one EVERY DAY!!!
Ooh, a virtual retreat. What fun! I'm gonna sign up. I need a retreat. I've been pushing hard, getting very little sleep each night so that I can do EVERYTHING. I want to get my life back in balance so that I'm not only writing, but I'm taking the time for self-care and rest. Please enter me in the drawing!
ReplyDeletePreslaysa, AKA: cutest writer in the universe, of course I'm putting you in the drawing! And I hear you, it's hard to face a biz like this and either go "All or Nothing"... or balance.
DeleteI've had to do balance. Outside jobs and six kids and a slew of grandkids dictated that balance should win. Scheduling and list-making came into the mix, and forming work-friendly habits.
We'll talk about all of that!!! You are not alone!
Ruthy, what a great idea. My kids go back to school on August 1 so they will already be back in school, but I know other school districts don't return until much later. And Sun Valley - there's a movie called Sun Valley Serenade starring John Payne - so count me in.
ReplyDeleteTanya!!!! I am so proud of you, of all your hard work and ongoing success. You are rocking this! I knew some parts of the country would be back in school... not up here, but below the Mason/Dixon line folks would be freed up a bit. So it's kind of perfect timing, isn't it???
DeleteSWEET!!! I'm glad you're doing this!
The virtual retreat does sound like a fun, great idea. Really practical too. Probably my worst issue is exhaustion after a long day of work. But I must run with endurance.
ReplyDeleteBoo, that's always my problem time, too... so I get up two hours before anyone else and work. I'm rested and I love writing when it's quiet (although this time of year frogs and birds are SO FUNNY AND NOISY!!!! And then there's Rusty the Rooster!!! :)
DeleteLearning to schedule around life is a great first step.
RUTHY, thank you for sharing your wisdom! Discipline is hard but so worth while!
ReplyDeletePlease toss my name in the cowboy hat.
Tossing you in, Caryl!!!!
DeleteHi Ruth:
ReplyDeleteHow cool!
I just noticed that in your photo of the books on display in a bookstore, you have two books displayed and James Rollins and Jude Deveraux each have just one!
I'm so close to finishing--so ready to query--so why do I do everything BUT revise during my precious writing time? Could be any number of things, especially the fears.
ReplyDeleteI'll tell you why I love revisions, Chris... because it's like polishing the stone. You pull the stone out of the earth and you see it's potential, but years of being buried, spattered, rained on, and trudged deeper into the earth have left their mark.
DeleteRevisions remove the dust. They scrub off the grime. They erase the repetition of years underground, the same old, same old... and they leave a bright, shining, better product in the end.
And sometimes I revise the revisions because now I can see the LITTLE mistakes... and that's okay!
Because it's just another layer of polish on what was already a beautiful, beautiful stone.
If fear wins, we lose.
I like winning. :)
