DeleteThe main reason I didn't submit that story to WW is that it was previously published (in a slightly altered version) several years ago. So I could not offer first serial rights.
Tina, congrats on another WW story!!! My writing class on Monday focused on short stories. Six new writers attended. We looked at WW Magazine and every writer came up with his/her own story idea. Some of them were worth developing! Thanks for providing the inspiration. BTW, I used one of your stories as an example!

Thanks, Deb! I was actually pretty worried about his cover because I asked Killion to make it look like the series covers, but I couldn't find a stand-alone girl OR guy I liked, so it was a dilemma for me. I finally asked Killion to just go ahead and use the couple I originally chose even though his head was cut off (which was the original problem with that photo for Killion, which I said Keith would fill in the head). Anyway, I suggested doing a split cover, and VOILA!! Poor Killion ... not only are they working with the Queen of Anality, but I like to design my own covers as well. I'm surprised they still work with me, and annoyingly enough, so is Keith!! ;)

Debby, I'm pretty sure it's Oak Alley Plantation in Vacherie, St. James Parish, Louisiana, built in 1837. Someone mentioned that online when the cover first came out. I'm definitely going to have to visit some time as it looks gorgeous.
DeleteThe fictional u-shaped plantation house in Breeze Hill is actually modeled after the much older Linden Hall in Natchez the main portion of which was built in 1785.
Seems I've been to Linden Hall. I lived in LA and toured Natchez with some ladies. So many beautiful sights!

ReplyDeleteLooking forward to the blog posts this week. I went on a Rachel Hauck binge last month, reading her three-book "Wedding" series in three days. I am eager to hear what she has to say.
This has been a summer of learning and trust. Be careful what you wish for. I retired from the day job in April with the expectation of a temp job over the summer and two reasonably steady freelance writing gigs. The temp job hasn't panned out. The writing gigs are there but not as regular as I'd hoped or need. This has left me with far more time to write than I'd expected. I am seizing the day, especially since the days are still long, and Getting Things Done. Have contest entries prepped and ready to go, and this month I worked on revising the second book in my New York "City On a Hill" trilogy. So when the first book sells, I won't be in the dreaded "second book" mode. I'm going to work that for another week, then switch over to my Speedbo project, the Christmas contemporary, and see what I can do with that. I'll probably look for a job in the fall, a coup0le of days a week, but for now I guess I'm a full-time writer. I'm a little nervous about the finances, but God knows.
Well, we shall see how this pans out, which is about the safest thing to say in 2017.

DeleteMonsoon hits next week. We get below 100 degree temps all week. I am so excited I can barely stand it.
The North American monsoon happens once a year, usually in the middle of summer. Warm, moist air from the Gulf of California blows northeast, while warm, moist air from the Gulf of Mexico blows northwest. These two winds meet over the Sierra Madre Occidental mountains in central Mexico. The monsoon brings moisture to the mountain ecosystem before continuing north to the U.S. states of Arizona, New Mexico, and Texas.
WOW Tina, you are so well versed in weather occurrences, impressive! I think we had a mini east coast version last night. Out heat index was 105 and we had torrential downpours and LOUD thunderstorms all night long!

I'm excited to dig in again and pull out some fascinating threads in Quinn and Kiera's story. :)
I want to know how many WW stories it is for Tina, too! I think she must wake up and a new story pops out. :)

ReplyDeleteI really like the cover art for "Grace -- Like Rain". Very inviting. Clearly a romance. Surely San Francisco. Cable car is old and the scene is very inviting on a hill with the bay in view. I suppose that is Alcatraz island. Man's suspenders also dates it.
My only problem is that when placed on a wall with all your other covers, this one does not look like a Lessman book. I already decided to buy it (I've been to SF many times.) before I realized you were the author. True.
I'd like to see your name in bolder type, bigger, and essentially the same on all your books. I'd say your name is the strongest selling point for this book.
I pre-ordered it even though I have it in a novella collection because I like standalone books that I can review right after reading it. I just don't like collections and having to remember which stories I read in which collection. Of course, this assumes a bargain price of 99 cents!
You fooled me with the start of this story. I thought the boom! was the earthquake...but it wasn't. But you sure got my attention. I was not certain of the quake date. And that's just the first paragraph. I may have to read the collection version before the first of September.
I sure hope all the Seekers come out with standalone books of their novella collections.

Thanks, Vince, I like it too -- a lot -- and there actually is a reason why it doesn't look like a Lessman book.
DeleteYou see, I sent the cover designer the picture of the couple on the book and asked her to use the same colors and typefaces as The Heart of San Francisco series so this novella would tie in, along with the same cable car.
She tried, but said it wouldn't work since the guy's head was cut off in the stock photo, even though I told her my husband could fix it (by adding a full head) before I sent it to her.
Instead, she wanted me to use a standing photo of a female model (like on the HOSF covers) or a male. I spent hours looking for acceptable models, but could not find even one I liked, either because the clothing was all wrong for the period, the guy looked like a clown, or the girl had a smirk or sexy look on her face and we both know the heroine, Patience, is anything but smirky or sexy.
SO ... I asked her to do a split cover (like she has done for my two O'Connor Christmas novellas that I will be revealing on my Journal Jots blog this week, which look more like the Seeker Christmas anthologies looked. So at least this novella cover will be more in line with my others. :) Frankly, I just got tired of fooling with it -- all the back and forth with the cover designer -- so I just said yes to this one to get it over with. But I truly like it! :)
Thank you for ordering it, my friend, and thank you for saying my name is the strongest selling point, although I'm not sure that's true. :)
LOL about the Ka-boom in the first line of Grace Like Rain -- I never even thought about it possibly sounding like an earthquake because I specifically set the story in 1905 rather than 1906 when the earthquake happend. :)
I hope all the Seekers come out with stand-alones as well, and I think most have so far. :)

ReplyDeleteI am up and around now, trying to pace myself but still making forward progress at last.
I had a detached retina two weeks ago.
TEN DAYS OF LYING FACE DOWN....THE DOCTOR SAID 23 OUT OF 24 HOURS A DAY, FIVE OR TEN MINUTE BREAKS MAX...PER HOUR.
So I survived that with my sanity somewhat in tact.
And now I can't see out of my left eye. It's all a blur. It's supposed to heal and be okay but in the meantime it is driving me MAD.
So weird how blurry the world is.
So I can see to type pretty much but using only my right eye, well, it seems like I'm a typo queen...it's gotten so much better!
And I finally am back to writing after the longest break possibly since I started writing twenty years ago.
Hey Mary Connealy I am so sorry to read about your retina and will include your complete healing on my prayer list. Hang in there. God loves you.

Thank you SO much, Josee -- I really do too, ESPECIALLY the title. I fell in love with Todd Agnew's song, "Grace Like Rain" about the time I was writing the novella, so it just seemed to fit. Especially since if you know anything about the lovable rogue brother, Blake "The Rake" McClare from my Heart of San Francisco series, because that guy sure needed grace like rain in this story. :)

DeleteBetter late than never.... busy times here on the farm and that's not a bad thing... and a wonderful Eichas family reunion (I'm using the Eichas family name in a historical series for indie publishing next year, they're such a marvelous old-German family... I love 'em!) and there were 237 PEOPLE at this reunion... Grandparents, kids, grandkids and great-grandkids. We're down to 7 of the original 11 siblings, and they're all edging 75-90 but going strong. And such good people!

Also, when I was younger my grandmother bought Woman's World all the time, and she still does, so I'll have to see if I can borrow this issue to read Tina's story! Put me in for the e-book drawing as well, please. I can't wait to read this collection of novellas!
