Sailing Back To Unpubbed Island

Hello Everyone!

It's Almost here. Are you ready?

Did you have a marvelous Christmas?

Are any of you celebrating Boxer Day?

And 2018 is just around the corner.

Oh my, what a wonderful time of year.

You are probably wondering what I’m talking about when I say I’m sailing back to Unpubbed Island. No it wasn’t a typo. I’m actually planning to retire from writing at the end of this year.

Our first Seeker get-together and we meet face-to-face for first time.

This winter has been kinda tough and although I’ve managed through it with flying colors, it has illuminated what I’ve been suspecting all along. God has another plan for me. It’s as simple as that.

More fun at our first Seeker get-together

For the past year, I’ve been hearing the call. When things started happening, I stopped writing and truthfully haven’t missed it one single bit. That is a strong indicator that its time for me to move on.

The Seekers at Atlanta RWA

Now that doesn’t mean I’m giving any of you the excuse to join me on the island- tempting as it might seem. We all have situations in life and there are many posts in the archives that give good advice on how to mush through them. In fact, some of my best writing was during times of stress and struggle with life’s issues.

But this time is different for me. When I’m called to something and everything around me seems to fall in place for that to happen—well, I’ve learned enough over the years to listen.  Chuckle.   So maybe you do get a little wisdom with age.

Ruthy and Sandra roomed together in Orlando RWA. Guess what Ruthy loved most.

These past years have been a wonderful blessing and experience for me. Some of my most treasured friendships are the writer friends I’ve met and the fun times at writing events like craft fairs, conferences, writing meetings, etc.

Fun with Seeker friends in Anaheim RWA

I’ll be sad to not be hanging out with my Seeker friends. They have been one of the prized joys in my life. My experiences here in Seekerville have kept me up to date with social media (Thank you Miss Tina) and have blessed me with so many of you new friends via the Internet.

Pam and Tina at ACFW

Over the years, I’ve seen the Christian fiction industry grow by leaps and bounds. I’ve watched Seeker friends become published and establish their own presence on the Internet. I have helped many to the publishing process and I’ve been published by some of the top names in the industry. What more could I ask for?

The Seekers had fun in Atlanta

So I’ve made a couple trips back to the island and will be dusting out my hut and hanging up my hammock. Ahhhhh Paradise.

Ruthy and Sandra enjoying the beach.

And the great thing about retiring from writing is that I will finally be able to really tackle my “To be read” pile.   Yay.

Cara and Sandra roomed together in Denver and visited the Rocky Mountains

So folks, the books I’ve written are still out there on Amazon. And I’ll catch a ride on a passing sailboat once in awhile and come visit you all. But for now, I’m going to kick back and re-acquaint myself with sand trickling between my toes and the sound of waves lapping on the shore.

Presenting a workshop at RWA

Thanks to all of you for being such a wonderful part of my life. You all are a gift from God. Best wishes on following your dreams and your own plans. I am praying for all of you to succeed in your writing endeavors.

  2. Awwww Sandra, us readers will miss you but WOW what an opportunity to dust off the old TBR pile, kick your feet up on the hammock, place a straw hat on your head and relax with a good book (unless of course you fall asleep first)! Ahhhh, paradise indeed :-)

Happy "retirement" and New Year, hope it's a blessed one for you...soak up some sun for me will you *chuckle*

    1. Oh Trixi, you are making me laugh. Falling asleep has happened more than once. LOL I'm touched that you will miss me, but the good news is that there are plenty of dynamite writers out there writing wonderful stories.

  3. Writers don't retire, they just tire of writing. But once the pressure is off, and the deadlines themselves have died, the best ideas rush in to fill the vacuum. What follows is poetry -- wisdom in the wind seeking words by trading freedom for immortality.

    Talent doesn't retire.
    It just gravitates higher.
    It awaits no call.
For now its become the caller.

    1. Dash on up north and tell that to LaVyrle Spencer. I missed her "real" books once she retired, Vince... That woman had a way about her!

The nice thing about this career is that you can take it with you wherever you go... and one change of the name can alter destiny. :)

    2. Hi Vince, I'm not really tired of writing. I love to write. But the stories are just not swimming around in my head like they used to. Other things are filling my head, beautiful and awesome things. Maybe someday they'll evolve into something written, but right now they are screaming for action. So I'll march on. Or paddle on to the island and let them have their freedom.

You've been a treasured friend Vince. I'll certainly stay in touch.

    3. Hi Ruth:

      The Road Not Taken…

You have your LaVyrle Spencer and I have my Betty Neels. Betty also retired…but from nursing… in her 60's… to become a romance writer! She wrote over 120 real books into her 90's… such is the nature of retirement! Which road will you take my friend? I think I know. :)

      Delete
    4. Vince I use James Michener and Herman Wouk and Laura Ingalls Wilder as my benchmarks... I am living my dream, and as long as God gives me a sound mind and typing fingers, I'm in. :) There are so many ideas in my head and never enough time to play with all of them, more's the pity!

But that's been the joy of Seekerville, to have so many distinct personalities, distinct authors who relate to a varied audience... So that's our goal now.

To maintain the joy of writing, the gift of giving and the diversity of great personalities. As things change... well... they change, LOL! And so we tack with the wind but sail our own course, much like those fishermen of old.

  4. Sandra! You know you are welcome back anytime, sweet thing, and it's been a great ride, hasn't it? You have blessed me in so many ways, from the early days when we critiqued together to the later days when you helped me keep my head on straight. You're a strong, funny, wonderful woman who isn't afraid to live your life... and thereby give courage to others to break the mold now and again!

Wishing you the very best of good things as you re-settle the coconuts in the hut. And if you wouldn't mind dusting out the other huts on the island, I expect folks will be dropping in to visit. Are you spearing fish? Or netting? Oh, WAIT!!!

INSTACART CAN COME TO THE ISLAND!!! :)

    Whoa.

Now that makes a difference, doesn't it? :)

    Best wishes, dear friend!

    1. Hi Ruthy, You have been a wonderful blessing to me also. I have so many fun memories. And I'll be sure to keep my eye on those huts. Everyone needs a day of rest. God did. smile So hop on over and we'll sit out in the sun and wiggle our toes in the sand.

    2. Will do... And you know my life... So busy and much to do, so when I get writing time, that is my rest... that's my "aaaaahhhh" moment!

But I'll be sure to bring some Diet Mt. Dew and a sun dress and a shade umbrella... The sun is not my friend, but I love it from a distance. Wait, there are palm trees on the island.... Who needs a shade umbrella when God gives palm trees??? :)

  5. And Sandra, one more thing... how blessed are we that we can keep working as long as we'd like? That we can retire on our own terms, and not be forced out at a prescribed age? That's pretty sweet!!!!

These days, with baby boomers retiring at 10,000/day.... TEN THOUSAND A DAY..... it's more the norm to retire than not. :)

Holy smokes, we're going to have a country chock full of oldie-but-goodies before you know it!

But how fun that we can define the time line like you did today.

    1. Yes, Ruthy, writers don't ever have to retire. Look at Barbara Cartland? She wrote 723 novels and wrote well into her nineties. Eve when her eyesight began to fail, she dictated her stories. Now there's a record to break, Miss Ruthy.

  10. Hi Sandra, I guess I'm not surprised. I remember you talked about it a couple of years ago. I guess I'm surprised because I know how hard all of you worked to get where you are, but I'm impressed, as I was when Keli Gwyn made her announcement, that you know enough to give it up when it's time. That's when it becomes a chore instead of work. Work is rewarding, chores are, well, chores. I salute you for listening to God on this one.
    Wow.
I guess I never thought about people formally retiring from writing, I thought you just, like, stopped, but this is better. It gives you closure. Back later,

(Of course I want to at some point own all the Seeker books.) I will miss you but hope you will still stop in once in a while to chat with us.

I had a nice Christmas with my Dad. It has been a time of sadness and joy. The last time I saw my mom on this earth was Christmas Eve a year ago. I couldn't help but think this year may be the last to spend Christmas with my Dad. I had the old memories but we also made new memories. I think the highlight was when the Pastor of Dad's church asked him to participate in the Candlelight service. He can no longer stand behind the pulpit and preach, but with the help of some of the men, he was able to get up on the platform to a chair. He read the scripture and prayed. What a treasured new memory I have and a special gift to this preacher's kid to once again see her Daddy on the platform. He will be 89 in February and his health is failing but yet he is still sharp in his mind.

This year has been rough for me, but I have such a strong desire to get back into my writing. I have so many thoughts swirling around in my head begging to get written. Perhaps 2018 will allow me the health to accomplish this joy and task.

Merry Christmas and Happy New Year to everyone.

  20. Sandra, I'm wishing you all the best with your retirement! Those huts sound inviting. Perhaps it's the age or just that the beach is one of my favorite places to be. The lovely truth is that retiring from writing doesn't mean retiring from friendships. You're a blessing.

You say you're retiring because you no longer heard the voices in your head. I usually don't have characters trying to get out. I must dig for my stories. Once I find them, I can hear their voices, at least upon occasion. I'm feeling like a fake. :-)

  28. The Ultimate RV

There are other good writers and other good books and more great classics than anyone could read in a lifetime. But if you've loved -- even a pet -- for more than a decade, is it any consolation that you can buy another like it?

    Shared memories are priceless.

Knowing the author makes the story a companion and not just an entertainment. Feeling the hidden hand of an editor enriches the reading experience. Certain phrases bring a smile the story never envisioned. Even character names can tell a story of their own. (Like Myra Dean in "The Bossy Bridegroom").

Voices 'trying to get out' is a limiting paradigm. Voices 'trying to get in' is unlimited. There are great characters waiting for the call! They are begging authors, with a lifetime of skill-building expertise who are at the height of their powers, to give them time on the stage...or at least an audition. Many authors have written that they don't even know their characters until the third chapter is written.

It's not that authors tire of writing per se. It's that they tire of the accoutrements of writing for hire.

On that Unpublished Island there are many hidden continents. Whole worlds apart unknowable to those seeking to escape. But for those who return nothing is denied. The Ultimate RV awaits.

Who better to write the travelogue?

    ReplyDelete

    1. Aww Vince, You are waxing poetic. And I love it. Of course there are hidden continents. And who knows, they might get explored. And those voices will be heard if its meant to be. And you've touched upon more truth than be told about tiring of the accoutrements i.e. marketing and needing skills one does not have any interest in. sigh. But the ultimate RV does await. And all the delights on the way. Always fun to explore. Blessings dear friend.

All those conferences sort of run into a blur of excitement and fun activity. smile And yes, it has been a real blessing for me to meet all of you Villagers and all the writer friends I've come across along this road. Thanks for the encouraging words. I look forward to discovering what the plan is. Hugs back.

  39. Oh, Sandra! You are such an inspiration for me. I appreciate all the encouragement you gave me and all I’ve learned from your blog posts.

As you know, God has great plans for your return to the sands of the island. I will miss you, but I do believe we’ll meet on a trail (or in an RV park) one of these days. Many thanks and blessings to you!

  41. Oh Sandra....you'll be missed SO much in Seekerville. But I'm very happy for you to follow the Lord's plans that He has for this season of your life. His plans are always best!
When I went to RWA Atlanta a few years ago, one of my highlights was meeting YOU in person. To this day, whenever I use Bath & Body Works Orange Ginger lotion, I think of you, LOL! Because when we met you were using that lotion on your hands, and it smelled wonderful! :)
I pray that you'll be very happy in your retirement and that many blessings will come to you.
    Hugs and Love, Patti Jo

  44. One thing about being retirement age is that when that pillow calls, it is screaming. LOL. I'm off for the night. But I will check in tomorrow morning in case any of you night owls comment further.

I want to say again, what a blessing it has been for me to know all of you fellow authors and readers. I've enjoyed my writing experiences to the fullest and truly hope all of you will follow your own calling. There is always a need for great stories and authors to write them. Blessings and love.

  45. Happy retirement, Sandra. One of my favourite pix with Guppy is our selfie holding the prairie dog story you sent him. He was so excited that a book came for HIM and not mommy. Thanks for the memory and the books I can revisit. Blessings to you!!!

  47. Sandra, I hope you don't just disappear into the sand, darling.... poke your flower-trimmed hat up now and again and stop by so we can chit chat!!!! We'll be dying to hear island stories as huts fill....

Although I prefer my huts to be filled with cute kids running around. Every time I see more 55+ communities being built, I cringe... Is it wise to separate or encourage the separation of the older and wiser from the youngers???

Hmmm.... a question for another day!

Sending you hugs as we continue the journey, my friend...

    1. Oh Ruthy, Of course I'll drop on by. And as a reader. Wow a dream come true. smile.
And don't knock those 55 plus communities. Studies are showing that seniors in those communities tend to live longer, healthier lives and its mainly because of the social interaction. There are hundreds of activities and everyone socializes because you're close and right there. They tend to take care of each other also. If someone is sick or injured, you should see how they rally around to help that person. Whereas a senior living alone in their house can easily become isolated. Most seniors are not like you with loads of children around them. Now if their children do come around-great. But many seniors living by themselves tend to end up isolated and alone. And trust me, just because it is a 55 plus community there are plenty of children around all the time. Healthy, active grandparents love having their grandchildren visit so they can all play together. Its really quite lovely.

So I didn't wait for another day to comment. LOL. Because I plan to really enjoy all those senior activities. And I will stop by because you all are just too special. As I said to Terri, retirement is possible from work, but not from friendships. They will always be alive and treasured.

    2. Hi Ruth:

In over 30 years as a real estate broker the biggest problem I've found and read about those over 55 communities is young people suing to get in!!! It makes me think of the song, "Don't Cry for me Argentina". :)

      Delete
    3. I am laughing! This is a perspective thing, for sure.... and Sandra, you're right, there are all kinds of folks helping each other out in the 55+ communities... and peeking through the blinds! :)

For the Ruthys of this world, that's too much of a good thing, I think.... although I could see myself living in a little village bungalow or cottage and walking around looking old.... but with schools nearby and all the crazy of a mixed neighborhood. Maybe because I was raised in the city and loved that mix of old folks and wisdom and young families and fun... AND I used to make cutting through old-folks' yards an art form! I was a great climber and did you know you can "walk" a whole city block without ever touching the ground if you go from tree to garage to fence, repeat, repeat, repeat??? :)

I was a sometimes naughty child.

Vince, I believe it, absolutely. There's lots of folks who shrug off kids and families and the busyness as being annoying.... but I love it. Today's demographics have a whole lot of single households and no-kid households... so a very different profile than the days of Richie Cunningham and The Fonz!!!

    4. Oh my, I'm biting my tongue about the "naughty child" info. I mean, do we ever grow up? ROFLOL I can just picture you doing that.

And we don't really peek through the blinds. We're too busy doing things.

    5. Yes, Vince. The young folks love it here as well when they come visit their folks. I call these places Disneyland for Adults. smile

  54. Sandra, I wish you heaps of blessings as you retire from this career and go on to become the world Pickle Ball champion. (Or did I miss something other than your retirement party?) You made that RWA conference special that year that you and I and Susie Dietze hung out together. I really enjoyed that. Happy retirement and hope to see you soon somewhere. Hugs, Anita.
