  2. Thanks Tina! Great opportunities there. Will be working away with the prospect of making one or two of them. Time is really flying. I can't believe that we've crossed Nov 1 already.

Prayers to everyone on the east coast.

  3. Does anyone know how to volunteer to be a RITA judge? I didn't see anything about it on the web page. Betting you have to be an RWA member? I'm supposed to have joined up already. Another thing on my to-do list ignored.

  4. Like Janet I always have reading material with me. When I'm in a waiting room or sitting in the an waiting I have a book to read. But most of my reading is done late at night when everyone is asleep and my brain is too tired to write.

  5. Get those entries in, writers!!!

Melissa, I think you do have to be RWA and pubbed.

  6. Best wishes to anyone entering those contests!

I love to squeeze in reading time at night. The house is quiet and I don't have to worry about somebody constantly interrupting since everyone around here goes to bed early. Being a night owl has its perks. ;-)

  7. I sneak in reading and writing by ignoring the rest of my life! :)

I'm wondering when Seekerville is going to have their own writing contest. :)

  8. I'm so glad it's November! :)

    Btw, I'm a reader.

  9. I always have my laptop, which also has a Kindle app, so I'm never without reading and writing materials. I pretty much live in my car, what with soccer/football/wrestling/archery practices for three kids. I've read and written thousands upon thousands of words from the driver's seat.

  10. Sneak in reading and writing? Ha. There's no sneak about it for this girl. I'll grab the nook or the print book I'm reading and kick back on the couch, while stuck in traffic, after going to bed, while the dirty clothes hamper is full, the dishwasher needs to be emptied ( and refilled!) and all with no shame.
Kind of like that elderly woman who lights up a cigarette ten feet from the door to the bank and as you walk through her breeze of smoke she looks at you like she's just waiting for you to say something or make a face.
    Yeah. That's me with a book. It's worse when it's one I'm writing. =)

Congrats and best wishes to anyone contesting this month and Tina, thanks for the monthly contest updates. It's one of my fave parts of Seekerville.

As a reader I want to read more this month than last month.

  13. Thank you for the post!

I find time to read on my lunch hours at work. I close the door to my office and for an hour I escape to another timer and place. It is a great stress reliever.

As for writing, I am a poet, and as Janet said in the first post, it comes to me anytime and anywhere. I am trying to get into a writing routine for my novel, but haven't found a groove yet. I do have a home office now, thanks to my wonderful husband. No more excuses.

    Have a great weekend!

    Smiles & Blessings,

  21. I always like reading the contest updates. Thank you, Tina, for compiling them each month. You are amazing.

For writing, I have dedicated time most days, but I sneak in extra time on road trips. Gotta love a laptop for that. :)

For reading, there is no set time I can read, so I sneak it in (don't laugh) in the bathroom, when I'm brushing my teeth (that always takes a couple of minutes, and my teeth are in reeeaaalllyy good shape because they get some good brushing time in), and when I blowdry my hair. I always have a book or Kindle with me when I have to wait somewhere--for the kids after school, the post office, doc's office. You know.

Happy birthday, Julie! I hope your day was great!
    Happy contesting everyone!

  22. Good morning,

First thing in the morning, I read a devotional and my Bible. Last thing at night, I read fiction. I almost always carry something to read with me just in case.

Thanks to your gentle nudge, I entered the First Impressions contest. That's the first time ever I've entered a contest before you posted it.

I appreciate all you do for us as Seekerville.

    Jackie L.

    ReplyDelete
  23. Way to go, Jackie.

The next step after entering contests is judging contests. You actually learn more judging than you do entering.

    Anyone out there judge contests?

And yes, Melissa J. The perk of finally selling is you get to judge the RITA and GH. But you must join RWR first. No small pocket change.

    ReplyDelete
  24. Okay, Robin, I want to know how you drive the car while reading and writing. If I could legally maser that..

    well there is Dragon Speak.

    And welcome to Seekerville.

    ReplyDelete
  25. Anyone entering the GH this year? Must be a completed msc. Or ACFW First Impressions?

    NO RISK, NO REWARD

    ReplyDelete
  26. I love judging because I do learn so much. I try to judge several times a year.

    ReplyDelete
  27. Ha! Jeanne I am the same way with brushing with my electric before work. I give it two cycles to read the last of my emails.

    ReplyDelete
  28. I agree, Christina. I always judge the GH, and GOTCHA.

    All other contests are optional.

    ReplyDelete
  29. A Seeker contest. Yeah. In our spare time.

    ReplyDelete
  30. I entered GOTCHA yesterday. Debating Great Expectations. Same final judge. 10 more pages. Won GOTCHA last time. Finaled in GE.

I am planning to enter GH. At least one entry. Maybe 2. Not sure yet. I renewed my RWA membership yesterday.

Finding time? I'm with Nancy. My kids are [nearly] desperate for clean clothes...

  32. i live in the country...and my Mom lives with me. We are both avid readers, so creating time to read is easy...just make sure she has a novel that captivates her, and i'm free to go.

    ReplyDelete
  33. Thanks Tina for the great contest update. Always love hearing about those contests since that is how we all started our friendship together. smile

Best wishes to all of you who enter.

Melissa, you have to belong to RWA to judge the RITA and you have to belong to PAN (be published)

RITA is a contest of peers judging peers. Kind of like the Academy Awards for actors.

  35. In one of the workshops at the M&M conference a statement made by one of the presenters that made an impact on me:

You don't *find* time to write, you *make* time!

How very true! That stuck in my head. I now *make* time. I get up early, prepare my coffee and put my fingers to the keyboard. Period!

In doing so, I learned what had been getting in my way. The internet. (Facebook, email...) I came to the realization the sky wouldn't fall if I waited an hour to see what the internet world had to say. :)

As for reading--I take my Kindle with me everywhere I go. My girlfriend meets me once a week for lunch and is notorious for being late. I don't mind. I have imaginary friends waiting in my Kindle to keep me company while I wait. :D

    ReplyDelete
  36. I sneak in my writing before work, during lunch, and after the kids have gone to bed. Have to write when I can.

    ReplyDelete
  37. Actually, I am getting close to the end of my novel! And November is my "blessed" month. I'm almost afraid to say that, because I'm REALLY hoping I'll get an offer this month. But for the last three Novembers, I got offers from my publisher. A one-book offer in 11/09, another one-book offer 11/10, and a two-book offer 11/11. Praying for another offer this month, 11/12! (Please, God, please!!!)

    ReplyDelete
  38. Also, there's always a book in my car. If we're going somewhere in my wife's car, then I have to smuggle a book in.

  39. What am I doing this month to reach my dreams? Hm. Good question.

This month I’m finishing revisions on my current WIP, and I’m entering that story in the Golden Heart as soon as it’s completely revised. Then, I can focus on pulling my series proposal together for that storyline and get all of my requests filled by the end of the year. I can’t really think much beyond that right now.

I may enter my speculative/paranormal story into the First Impressions contest. Haven’t really decided that yet. Guess I’m running out of time for that so I better make up my mind.

Thanks for the encouragement and the updates Seekerville!

    ReplyDelete
  40. Great contests this month! Still trying to decide if I have time for anything else the rest of this year :) Have a super weekend.

    ReplyDelete
  41. Oh, and I write whenever I can during the week, sometimes before work but mostly after work, and I have been known to carry my writing with me- either hardcopy or flashdrive and netbook- so that if I'm waiting in the car for one of my kids, I can get some work done that way. I do try to balance spending time with my family and writing on the weekends so that I can make up word count/scene additions when I don't have to worry about my day job.

    ReplyDelete
  42. Thanks for a great update Tina! I bought a RWA membership to enter the GH this year. I will probably do First Impressions as well. Maybe Great Expectations. Now that I know that some of you are going to enter these contests, I am more intimidated, but as you say Tina, "No Risk, No Reward"

Making the time is crucial. I always tend to think that I need big blocks of time to write, but I am learning--little blocks of time can add up as well.

Happy Birthday, Julie and have a good time in 'bama Debby!

  44. Of course there are many of you who are so close to selling or have sold and don't know it or didn't tell anyone yet (see first sale surprise party on November calendar www.seekerville.net) that are no longer eligible for contests!!

What a lovely feeling. Limbo land.

  45. Happy Friday and Happy Birthday to Julie!! Hope it's a great one!

I'm lucky my kids are older now (16 & 19) so I have more time to write (or edit as I'm doing now). Of course, my house is always messy, but such is life!

Reading: I always read in bed and whenever I'm waiting somewhere. Today I'll be reading at the dentist office while my daughter is getting her teeth cleaned.

Have a great weekend everyone. I think the rain has stopped at last. Maybe we can get the rest of our leaves raked!

    Cheers,

  46. Tina thanks for the contest updates! I plan on entering both the Golden Heart and ACFW First Impressions. I long for the day I'm not eligible.

Lunch and late at night are times to sneak reading in.

  47. Great info Tina!
As we've come to expect, along with great coffee (HELEN) and goodies and especially the friends...
    thanks!

    ReplyDelete
  48. Tina, it's true. Part of the reason I'm able to be so happy for my fellow writers and friends who sign and then when they sell is knowing that's one less amazing writer I'll be competing against until it's my turn. That's terrible I know, but honest. =)

    ReplyDelete
  49. That First Impressions Contest sounds fantastic. Did you see who the judges are? what a great opportunity to catch the eye of an agent!

And yes Tina, I'm in wonderful Limbo Land - sold, so can't enter the unpubbed contests, but my publishing date is next year, so can't enter the pubbed contests either.

I'll take any time off I can get...

So what am I doing this month to reach my dreams? Working on proposals!

How do I sneak in writing time? Like someone else said, I make writing time. It's housework I have to sneak in :)

But sneaking in reading time is easy - I read for an hour after lunch every day.

When my children were little, I kept a book in the bathroom. I read a lot of books one page at a time. Now I get to read WHOLE CHAPTERS at a time! There are advantages to children growing up.

  59. Oy, I just wrote a really long comment and it got erased!!! How rude computer.

I love all the comments on making time for writing. Especially the one about "making time" not "finding time."

I entered the GOTCHA yesterday at the very last minute. I might do one more before the year is out. The Great Expectations looks like a good one.

Happy Friday Everyone! (now when I push submit, this computer better not erase my comment or everyone will hear me scream).

  60. How do I sneak in writing I'm a freelance editor, a homeschooling mom, a pastor's wife, and a writer. So, yeah, sneaking it in is the name of the game.

About a year ago Janice Thompson shared that she writes early in the morning, takes a break to do other stuff, writes again in the early afternoon, takes a few hours off, and writes again in the evening. I thought, I can do that!

So I get up, have my devotions, and write until my four-year-old gets up. He'd been getting up at 10, so I had a lot of time to write. And my older kids do A Beka Video school so I'm the assistant rather than the teacher. And the education's great so it's a win-win.

Around ten I do important stuff, like showering!, and do some cleaning, lunch, stuff like that. Then around 2, I do editing for my clients. That goes until about 5. Then it's time for dinner and other house and family stuff.

Some nights my husband plays mom and dad while I run off to the nearest Starbucks. So on those nights I write or edit from 7 to 9:30.

When you add that all up, I can get in, if I'm good and focused, around 8 hours of writing/editing a day.

Which is pretty stinkin' good for a homeschooling/editing/writing mom!

  64. I want to jump in on this "No risk, no rewards"

I entered a contest in August with two manuscripts. One had semi-finaled in the Genesis, the other did not. Other than that neither had finaled. So I gave it one last shot. I'd been chasing this particular publishing house in contests for a year. Both finaled. Out of four finalists, one of mine took first and the other third. Not only do I get bragging rights for 1st place, as if I would ;), I got great feedback from an editor.

    Risk- $25 an entry
    Risk- blow to my pride
Reward- great feedback from 1st round judges
Reward- awesome feedback from final judge
Reward- 1st place, $25.00 and certificate
    Reward- 3rd place
Reward- Nice email from final judge

So, writers, pay attention to the contests. Look at final judges. If they're worth the risk, jump.

  65. Reading?

    Finding time to read?

Do you find time to breathe?

“Leaving home without taking something to read is like checking your soul in the vestibule before entering the church.”

    ****

I’m a guest blogger today at “My Story My Way” or I’d have more to say. : )

I really like the idea of a 200 word blurb. Is anyone going to enter that contest? ACFW First Impressions.

Also: are the NaNo-ers going to check in today? It’s going to be hard to make 1,666 words today and you don’t want to fall behind.

    Vince

    ReplyDelete
  66. Do you have a link, Vince?

I've been doing the 200 word blurbs for years. Something that was ingrained in my brain. Oh, and high concept pitch lines.

First Impressions is an excellent opportunity.

    ReplyDelete
  67. Thanks to a lovely discussion with the fabulous Pepper Basham I have officially decided to enter Great Expectations :).

    ReplyDelete
  68. I have two entries in first impressions, Vince. And I made NaNo word count last night, just barely at 1717. You would be happy to know that with every MS I write I become less of a pantser and more of a plotter. =)

  73. The Myth of Sisyphus and Contest Agony

Remember the guy in Greek mythology who was forever condemned to roll a huge boulder up a mountain only to have it roll down again? He had to repeat this process for all eternity.

    The Risk and the Reward?

I took the risk. Entered a contest. Got 75% and had five things listed as wrong with my story. They (the judges hereafter understood) did not like my hero. They did not like my heroine. They did not like where the story started. They wanted more physical description. They wanted fewer POV changes.

I fixed everything and quickly entered another contest. I got 75% and had five things wrong with my story. They wanted the heroine introduced first. They wanted some scenes shortened. They wanted the hero to be more sympathetic. They wanted more heroine development before she meets the hero. They wanted to know the exact location of the story. What state was it in?

I fixed everything up and sent the double revised entry into the next contest. I got 75% and they found five things worng with my story. They thought the hero and heroine relationship was developing too fast. They thought the heroine should be more attractive. They wanted a more vivid picture of what the cabin looked like. They thought the hero had too many good features. They wanted to know what the temperature was and the season. And one judge said she just didn’t get it.

So I fixed everything up again and sent it to the next contest. I got 75% and there were five things wrong with it!

Are they doing this because I’m a man? : )

    Vince

P.S. The 75% score has been adjusted to account for the different grading systems. The five things wrong applies only to the major things wrong and not little things only one judge pointed out. (Except for the judge who just didn't get it. That was too good to leave out.)

Now, if you go there, you have to come back or I’ll get into trouble. : )

P.S. the blog is all about cover art and how to make it attract the best prospects for your book.

  76. Hi Nancy:

I am proud that you are becoming more of a plotter. You might like this quote I got from Liz Fielding:

“I've decided that flying into the mist is just too much hard work and I need to plot like a grown up.”

Liz Fielding has written over 6o romances and has two RITAs. It is never too late to save a pantser!

  77. Happy Birthday, Julie!

Until I started judging (after judges' training) I didn't understand how someone could learn more from judging than from entering. But oh my, I have learned. Judging also helps us, as writers, to understand that judging is based on certain criteria but is opinion ... just the way it will be for readers and reviewers. NOTE: This is not a reason to judge but not to enter :-)

Reading time. Ahhh. In the interest of having reading time, I have learned to let a few things slide that aren't really as important as I once thought they were -- due partly to a re-evaluation of things after a Seekerville post. So if the dishes pile up, it's a Seeker's fault. Great excuse, huh?

    Terrific contest update, as always.

I went to sign up for one of these contests AND I JUST COULDN'T DO IT!

Okay, apparently no one else has asked, but I would appreciate knowing -- why not, Mary?

  79. Vince, such is the tale of contests. But hey, sometimes you get that 90% or that 99% and sometimes you get scored low by the 1st round judges and the 2nd round judge loves you. Go figure.

    No, guts, no glory, Tina!

  80. Like Rose, I'm done with contests for this year. I have a couple of proposals in progress, so a critique couldn't hurt. Right?

  81. WHY NOT, MARY???????????????????

  82. I don't want to address another envelope. Plus I don't have enough books so I'll have to order more. I saved just enough for the two contests I always enter, the Carol and the Rita.

So re-order, pack and print out address labels.

  83. This year a lot of things have been put into perspective. To reach my dreams...I am trying to take better care of myself physically so I'll be around a while to try and reach those dreams. I'm taking a few minutes each day (well, to be honest it's more than a few ; )) to do something fun for myself...it might be writing, crafting, trying to sew, etc. I'm also trying to do as much as I can with my favorite people...my husband and kiddos. I'm so grateful for the life God has given me! God bless~Stacey

  87. Great contest update, Tina. The ACFW First Impressions is a nice blend of opening and overview. Think about it, most people look at the cover, read the back blurb and then glance at the first few pages.

If you can write a great back blurb, you've come close to conquering the world!

  90. I love to enter contests, but I'm still trying to get the ms ready. I know me too well. I'll work on the beginning over and over and never complete the book.

Good luck to all you who enter. May the judges be nice and helpful.

  91. Great Contest Update.

Since Stealing Jake is an ebook, there wasn't a lot of published contests enter, but I did manage to enter OKRWA's International Digital Awards and the Epic eBook Awards and finalled in both.

    Whoo-hoo!

  92. Pam, Stealing Jake is one of my all time favorites. I've said it before, and I'll say it again, I can't wait to have it in print.
