Five Things I've Learned After I got THE CALL by Seekerville guest Mindy Obenhaus

Janet here. I feel I've known Mindy forever and love seeing that fabulous smile of hers at conferences. I was thrilled when she got THE CALL and promptly asked her to share the experience in Seekerville. The Doctor's Family Reunion releases now and is on my TBR pile, along with books from Ruthy and Glynna. Without furhter ado, here's Mindy.

Well, a big Texas howdy to everyone out there in Seekerville. This is such a great blog. These ladies share so much with so many. They’re encouraging, informative, and every last one of them is downright beautiful. Thank you, ladies. I’m honored to be here today. And thank you, Janet, for inviting me.

I brought some chips and salsa (not too hot), along with some of the most amazing chocolate sheet cake you’ve ever tasted, so help yourself. There’s plenty to go around.

You know, as writers, we never stop learning. I don’t care how long you’ve been writing, there’s always something new to explore.

I started writing in June of 2004, joined my first writer’s group in May 2005, and attended my first writer’s conference in July 2006 (where I got to meet famous people like Missy Tippens and Lindi Peterson :)). On January 11, 2013, I was blessed to receive the most amazing phone call from Melissa Endlich at Love Inspired Books. Yes, THE call.

Yet, for all the conferences, workshops, and classes I’d attended over the years, I was not prepared for what I’d learn after the call.

1)  I work better under deadline – Melissa said my book would release in September. That meant a very quick turnaround on revisions. Four weeks, to be exact. With a deadline looming, not to mention some major changes, this often less-than-disciplined author kidnapped her writing partner for one extensive brainstorming session, filled the freezer with frozen pizzas so my men wouldn’t starve, then put my butt in the chair and wrote my little heart out. I had a plan and I stuck to it.

2)  I can make changes I said I never would – Have you ever had someone suggest you change something in a story and thought, “That would never work” or “I could never do that because…?” But when an editor asks, or simply points to something at the end of chapter two and says, “I sure would like to see this in chapter one,” by golly, you suddenly find a way to make it happen.

3)  Don’t panic over copy edits – I almost had a heart attack when I saw, Blakely Daniels’s world had turned upside down. Daniels’s? Not only did it not look right, it didn’t sound right. I don’t care what the Chicago Manual of Style says. (Really I do, just not in this instance)

After a hasty email informing my editor that I REALLY needed to talk, I learned that copy edits are for the betterment of the book. However, their edits are not cast in stone. Do I need to pay attention to them? Yes. Can I elect to disagree on occasion and insist something stay the way I wrote it? Yes.

4)  All those changes make a better book – When I received my final round of revisions, I sat down and read this story I’d read a hundred times before as a book on my Kindle. And you know what? I really enjoyed it. I didn’t even remember some of the changes I’d made, yet everything had come together to create a much stronger story. One I hope readers will enjoy as much as I did.

5)  Self-promotion is not for the faint of heart – Writing a book is hard work, but self-promotion (I know, we’re promoting our books, not ourselves) can be a challenge. Especially if you’re like me and have stayed focused on your craft and not paid much attention to tribes, social networking, and book launch ideas.

You need to have a plan and put yourself out there. My husband is a salesman by trade, so it doesn’t bother him to tell anyone and everyone that his wife has a book out. We had business cards printed with the book cover on one side and ordering info on the other side, and he passes them out to everyone he comes in contact with. And I do mean everyone. If you’re like me and not comfortable telling strangers about your book, find someone who is and let them shout it from the rooftops.

For an unpublished writer, getting the call seems like the culmination of everything you’ve been working toward. But it’s really just the beginning of another journey. Like I said, we never stop learning.

  2. Congratulations, Mindy! I agree with everyone of your , especially number 2. I just wrote My first dedication and cried. ;) a dream becoming a reality.

  3. maybe it's just me, but the last like 2-3 letters of every line of this post is missing?

But love the idea of business cards with the cover on front and the info on back! I should do that.

And my hubby is doing my selling, he's also getting all the strange writer questions I've somehow avoided like "so now you can retire, right?" "I've written a book, can she read it?" "I've got an idea for a book, can she write it?" It's funny, because I'm not getting the questions, he is. :)

  4. Great post, Mindy! I love to read these "what to expect" type posts! Thanks for sharing your experience with us!

Congrats on your new book!! :)

  5. YAY, Mindy! Thanks for the info. And folks, it is a great book!

Yes, something is going on with the post. Blogger must be having a bad Monday.

    Peace, Julie

  6. Blogger seems to be realigning itself with the universe today, very "Desiderata" just enough to TEASE us into filling in those blank letters!

And Tina's weekend edition is altered too, so mayhap Mr. Blogger decided he'd been off-kilter FOREVER and just decided now he needed to space "three to the right"...

If you put your face REAL CLOSE to the screen, shut your right eye and peer left with your left eye, you can almost SEE THE LETTERS!!!!

    :)

Mindy!!!! I love that we're sharing bookshelf space together across the country!!!! SUHWWWWEEEEEET!!!!!

And we're there with Glynna!!! And Brenda Minton (love here!!!) and Carolynne Aarsen (she's working on the 2014 continuity with me and a lovely cast of ladies!) and the lovely Lois Richer! We're hangin' with some big company, ladies!!! YAY!

I still smile just to see Mindy's book, and it may or may not have made it into my surprise box for later this week.

    YOU NEVER KNOW!!!

Super Mega Congrats, Mindy O, and now let's get moving on that next one! Holy Schmoly, the wedding's over, and time's a-wastin', partner!

    Sending hugs...

  8. Hi Mindy,
What a pretty cover. Thanks for sharing your story and congrats!

Seekerville also has a pretty new look.

  9. Blogger updated and our template is too old to go along for the ride..so I have installed our new "birthday" header early and the new template to fix the Blogger issue.

Seekerville has just been around too long. SIX YEARS!!

  10. Congratulations, Mindy! Great cover, MARVELOUS LOCATION!! Great story that is in my TBR!!!

Good things happen to good peeps.
Enjoy the ride and wishing you continued success.

  11. Congrats, Mindy! Not only on your release, but on all the things you've learned since selling to LI. It takes a broad, open mind to embrace all those lessons, and it sounds like you've done it well.

And I LOVE this updated site design! Very beachy :)

  12. Mindy,
Stopping by to join in the congratulations. I can't wait to read your book.

I especially can feel you on the self-promotion. I sometimes wonder if I sabotage my writing just out of fear of having to promote it. Uh oh. I just admitted that in print.

Have a great day on Seekerville.

    ReplyDelete
  13. Congratulations, Mindy! I agree with all your comments. Editors have great suggestions to improve a book that an author considers perfect already. While I was revising (with very little time) I discovered I could write much faster than I thought I could. That's a good thing to know!

    ReplyDelete
  14. I know exactly what you mean, Christina. I cried writing mine too. Wouldn't let my family near me while I was writing it because I didn't want them to see it until it was in print. :)

    ReplyDelete
  15. Melissa, I'm so grateful for the leg work my husband does. He's comfortable with it, I'm not, so it's a perfect fit. :)

    ReplyDelete
  16. Thanks, Natalie! Always happy to share. :)

    ReplyDelete
  17. Hi, Julie! Thanks for the plug. You're SO sweet!!

    ReplyDelete
  18. I know, I know, Ruthy. My fingers are moving as fast as they can. Almost there.
I am thrilled to be in such amazing company on store shelves. What an honor!
Blogger looks fine on my end. Either things have been fixed or it's that I enlarge my screen so I don't have to squint.

    ReplyDelete
  19. Yay!!! Congrats Mindy!!!!

I have a feeling I'll work better under deadline too. One of these days I hope to find out ;). I think knowing what I HAVE to focus on would be huge for me. Right now I'm trying to finish up the SpeedBo novel from LAST year because I just haven't gotten around to it yet... Man I love that story.

Anyway, today is oil changes and all sorts of other stuff getting ready for a trip in SEVENTY-TWO HOURS!!! EEK!!!

    ReplyDelete
  20. Mindy those are all so exactly right and true.

I believe I will go get some granite and a chisel and just carve them in rock and keep them with me forever.

I'm going to need a bigger purse of course.

    ReplyDelete
  21. Seekerville is so pretty today!

We went boating yesterday for what MIGHT be the LAST time of the season. With ACFW coming this next weekend and cooler temps on the horizon and harvest time looming it may be time to winterize the boat. My Cowboy seems to think so.

So seeing that Seekerville boat--it's on the MAINLAND right??? Touches a chord!

And of course it's all TINA!!!!!

    Beautiful!

    ReplyDelete
  22. Hi, Jackie! I love my cover. LI has had some amazing covers lately.

    ReplyDelete
  23. Thank you, Tina. And I do enjoy making you homesick for Colorado. :)
And thanks for fixing the Blogger glitch. You are amazing and the page looks fabulous.

    ReplyDelete
  24. Hi, Mia! Well, they change is inevitable. Guess I have no choice but to go with the flow. No matter how much it may hurt. :)

    ReplyDelete
  25. Hi, Mary! Great to "see" you again. And you'll do fine. We just have to find what works for us/what we're comfortable with.

    ReplyDelete
  26. Cara, it's amazing what we can do when the pressure is on, isn't it? But, like you said, it's a good thing to know.

    ReplyDelete
  27. Hi, Carol! Thanks for stopping by. Sounds like you've got a busy day ahead. Have fun on your trip.

    ReplyDelete
  28. Hi, Mary Connealy! Looking forward to seeing you again at conference.

    ReplyDelete
  29. Good morning, Seekerville!

Congratulations, debut author Mindy!! I love using the term debut. Melissa Endlich bought my first book, too! How many of us got The Call from Melissa?

I'm eager to read The Doctor's Family Reunion. Tell us a bit about the story, Mindy.

I'm not surprised you love to cook. You're a perfect fit for Yankee Belle Cafe.

    Janet

    ReplyDelete
  30. Tina, I love the fresh new face of Seekerville!! A tease for our birthday bash in October. Those six years have just flown by!!

    Janet

    ReplyDelete
  31. Melissa, I'm giggling at the silly questions your dh is getting. Better him than you!

    Janet

    ReplyDelete
  32. Well, ack, Seekerville had a makeover and threw me for a loop this morning. I logged in three times before I was convinced that I was in the right place! I don't do change well. :-)

And my blog is skewey now too so I'll have to figure out how to unskewey it - bah!

MINDY -- I loved your book!!!!! To pieces!!!!! You and the LI team did a fantastic job. I think the book will just promote itself! What I'm taking away from your blog is your ability to adapt and regroup with grace. No diva dramas going on around your house. And on a deadline even!!!! Thank goodness for frozen pizza! So -- eager readers want to know...when is your next book coming out?

    ReplyDelete
  33. Mia, I couldn't stop smiling at your pretty cover on the Love Inspired ad on one of the elevator doors at the RWA conference in Atlanta.

    Janet

    ReplyDelete
  34. Mindy, congratulations is such a boring way to say "I'm so stinkin' proud of you, I could burst!!!"

We all wait for The Call, but the real work to please the editor begins the moment AFTER we say yes, right?

Thanks for sharing your after Call experience!!

    YAYAYAYAYAY, Mindy!!

    ReplyDelete
  35. Well good morning,
Thanks for some good advice, Mindy. Yes, I've heard that after the acceptance, the real work begins. Or another kind of work. I have a strategy for marketing (when and if, they ask you for it now before they even look at the book), and I hope I get to use it. I always found it hard even to sell Girl Scout cookies with my kids, so this will be an out-of-the-comfort zone experience. When it happens. Which isn't yet.
I too love the new image of the boat -- and the fact that it's empty!
Please put my name in the drawing.
Had a great iron-sharpening-iron time Saturday with my critique partner, which has expanded to a critique group. Things are on the move there, good feedback from people who are on the same level.
I may be back later, have to go make a living.

  36. Great site design, Tina! You are such a master at this stuff : )

  37. Mindy, love the cover on your book! I wanna be there!

A clever idea of making business cards for your book!
Wishing you great success in promoting it. :-)

TINA, I like the new Seekerville header image, I wanna be there too!

I think I just wanna be somewhere else today! :-)

    ReplyDelete
  38. Love the new header and color scheme, Seekers!!! Awesome. :-)

And Mindy, congrats, congrats, congrats on the debut of your first book. And I have to agree that everything changes once you've got that first contract in hand! :-)

    ReplyDelete
  39. Yea, Mindy! Loved your post here. I'm learning I work better under deadline too. :) I loved the other things you shared. I think they will help me keep a good perspective if/when I ever get "The CALL."

I hope to see you this weekend!

    ReplyDelete
  40. Congratulations, Mindy! How wonderful that you got to join the September 2013 LI line-up! So sweet to see your cover on the stands alongside us!

    ReplyDelete
  41. Oh my goodness, I was so intrigued reading Mindy's post before that I didn't even realize Seekerville had changed. I LOVE this. Love love love it.

    ReplyDelete
  42. Love the new look Seekerville! Gorgeous!

Great post Mindy, and thank you for the peek from the "other side." I'm looking forward to reading your book, too.

For folks interested in being Mindy when they grow up, the contest coordinator from Windy City's 4 seasons contest says they are low on entries in Inspy and two other categories.

    ReplyDelete
  43. Seekerville looks different! Nice change. Thanks Mindy. I can't wait to read The Doctor's Family Reunion. It looks great!

    ReplyDelete
  44. OH THE NEW LOOK HAS ARRIVED!!! OH, OH, OH, OH, OH!!!!

WE'VE SET SAIL AND LANDED ON THE SUNNY, SANDY SHORES OF MAINLAND PUBLISHING!!!!

    OH, OH, OH, OHHHHH!!!!!!!

This is perfectamente, lovely, marvelous, superlatives to the exponentially impossible derivative of pi "r" squared times two indivisible!!!!!

    Oh, happy day!

    Oh, glorious morn!

Oh, sandy beach and publishing contracts abounding for the humble... (Ruthy clearly points fingers at OTHERS because her over-inflated ego and sense of inherent honesty doesn't let her pretend a humility she falls short on daily!!!!)

I LOVE THIS SO MUCH!!!! YAYAYAYAYAYAYAYAYAYAYAYAYAYAYAYAYAYAYAYAYAYAYAYAYAYAYAYAYAYAYAYAY!!!!

    ReplyDelete
  45. Congrats, Mindy. So glad you got the call. We also get the benefit of your advice.
Well, off to get ready for my 7:30 class at college.

    ReplyDelete
  46. Welcome, Mindy! I'm so excited to be able to celebrate with you today!

    ReplyDelete
  47. Okay, that really shouldn't have posted twice, LOL! So the occasional mainland glitch makes us stronger!!!

Running to delete one Ruthy exclamatory!

    ReplyDelete
  48. Tina, the new template looks fantastic! I guess we all need to check our blogs to see what's fitting and what's not...

    Heading to do so now.

    ReplyDelete
  49. Elizabeth is a cutie and she loved Rilla of Ingleside (one of my favorites!!!) and Cherry Ames!

    I love you Elizabeth!

    ReplyDelete
  50. Mindy, I also meant to say I totally agree with the things you listed. Especially that all those changes make a better book. I love how my books turn out better than when I turn them in!

    ReplyDelete
  51. Congratulations Mindy, and thanks for sharing this post with us today!

LOVE that book cover, and definitely plan on getting your book. I'm sure this is only the first of many more you'll write.

I know you brought yummy food, but I just couldn't resist bringing some peach goodies this morning *smile*. Please enjoy my Georgia peach muffins and peach cobbler (still warm from the oven).

    Congrats again, Mindy!!
    Blessings from Georgia, Patti Jo

  52. YAYYYYY!!!!! MINDY, What a fun day to celebrate. Not only did you get the CALL but you have your first book out already. WOOOOOO HOOOOOOOO

I just know how exciting that is. To actually see your book on a shelf in the store. To hold it in your hand. To pass it along to a friend. OOOOOOOOOHHHHHH I'm so happy for you.

And you are so right. The journey has JUST BEGUN. Have fun.

Love the salsa and chips btw

  53. Welcome, Mindy! I'm with Janet--LOVE seeing your fabulous smile at conferences (and hearing your voice on the telephone with exciting news is equally fabulous!)!

AMEN on all five things you learned! Deadlines, changes, copy edits, promotion . . .

Like you, I have a hubby who isn't shy about talking up my books. I love that he's so enthusiastic, but sometimes when he starts up, shy little me just wants to melt into the woodwork. Instead, I try to smile and nod and politely answer any questions.

Looking forward to seeing you again in a few days, and congratulations again on getting THE CALL! I'm thrilled for you, Mindy!!!

    ReplyDelete
  54. Good morning, Janet! Okay, so a little bit about the story...
Can a man earn the trust of the woman he betrayed to have the family he's always wanted? That's the condensed version, but here's the back cover blurb--
Family means everything to Dr. Trent Lockridge. Growing up without a father, he always yearned for a family of his own. One long-ago summer in Ouray, Colorado, he thought he might build a future with beautiful Blakely Daniels. But when he abruptly fled town, he broke her heart and left behind more than memories. Years later, Trent is shocked—and overjoyed—to learn he's a father. He'd like to earn back Blakely's love and trust— but it won't be easy. And the clock is ticking. He's got only a few weeks to prove that, this time, he's here to stay…forever.

    ReplyDelete
  55. Bless you, Kav. You are just to sweet. The book is out now. I just had my first book signing Saturday. Very exciting. I think I ran on adrenalin all day.
You know, I've tried that diva thing a time or two, but my family just won't let me get away with it. Spoil sports. :)

    ReplyDelete
  56. You are so right, Audra. And thank you. ;)

    ReplyDelete
  57. Hi, Kathy! You know, I've spent all of my conferences focused on learning the craft of writing and not really paying much attention to things like marketing and promotion, never realizing that I'd get the call AND have the book come out before my next conference. So I've been asking a lot of author friends what has and hasn't worked for them, then putting my own spin on it. Like I said, you just gotta find what works for you. BTW, it was Boy Scout popcorn at our house and I always made my husband accompany them. Of course, cute little kids are hard to say no to. :)

    ReplyDelete
  58. Hi, Mary Hicks! I want to be there too. Sigh. Much cooler than Texas. :)

    ReplyDelete
  59. Hi, Naomi! Thank you. We just have to learn to adapt, right?

    ReplyDelete
  60. JEANNE! Yay! Can't wait to see you in Indy!

    ReplyDelete
  61. Hi, Glynna. I'm proud to be surrounded by amazing authors. Thanks.

    ReplyDelete
  62. I like the new look for Seekerville. Very beach-y.
I'm with you on the less-than-disciplined thing. Lately, my schedule has been jacked up, so I need to get back into the writing habit . . .better get to work.
(Can't wait until I receive "the call" some day!)

    ReplyDelete
  63. Hi, Piper! Thanks for stopping by and for the head's up on the contest.

    ReplyDelete
  64. BTW, Piper...I have yet to grow up. :D

    ReplyDelete
  65. Hi, Cindy! I hope you enjoy the story.

    ReplyDelete
  66. Hi, Elizabeth! 7:30 class? Are brain cells even awake at that time?

    ReplyDelete
  67. Hi, Missy! Looking forward to seeing you this week. Yes, the changes are hard, but the benefits definitely outweigh the struggles, don't they?

    ReplyDelete
  68. Patti Jo, I love peaches! Especially peach cobbler. YUM!!! Thanks for stopping by. :)

    ReplyDelete
  69. Hi, Sandra! Yes, it has been a very surreal year. Fun, but surreal. :)

    ReplyDelete
  70. Myra, I know exactly how you feel. I love that my husband is willing to talk me up. That is, unless I'm right there with him. Then I want to run and hide.
I will definitely miss making those fun phone calls. See you soon!

    ReplyDelete
  71. WHOO-HOO, MINDY!!! SUPER CONGRATS ON THE NEW BOOK ... AND A TRULY GREAT COVER!! It calls to me, girl, making me want to live in that town. Can't wait to read it!!

Soooooo relate to the jolt over the copy edits. Got a tic in my eye reading mine on A Passion Most Pure the first time. But I had a copy editor who not only didn't like my book, but she rewrote a good portion of it WITHOUT TRACKED CHANGES!!! Every time I'd come to a line she changed, it was like an electric shock because the timing/rhythm was ALL off for me. So I cried and prayed and finally talked to my agent who talked to my editor. So, yes, I found out like you did (only in a much harder way, it seems) that copy edits are NOT "cast in stone," and you can discuss your concerns with your editor. Much to my shock, my editor told me the book was mine and other than a few policies they had to adhere to, I could change EVERYTHING back the way I had it, which took DAYS since there was no tracked changes, only my gut wincing when I read an altered line. I requested a new copy editor for the next book and got it, and it's been a love relationship ever since. :)

Can't wait to give you a congratulatory hug at ACFW, my friend.

    Hugs,
    Julie

    ReplyDelete
  72. Courtney Faith, that discipline part is hard, isn't it? Especially when life refuses to stop. It just keeps going and often gets in the way. Maybe we should invent a writer's chair. The seat is made of Velcro and each chair comes with a special pair of pants with Velcro on the butt. Once you're in, it takes so much effort to get out that you have no choice but to stay put. :P

    ReplyDelete
  73. OH no, Julie!!! I think I would have had a stroke. Sounds like you almost did. That's horrible! However, having read A Passion Most Pure, I can honestly say that the end product was FANTASTIC!! But then, you already know that.
Can't wait to see you. There's gonna be a whole lotta huggin' goin' on.

    ReplyDelete
  74. Mindy, I love the premise of your book! Second chance stories and secret babies are so much fun!!

    Janet

    ReplyDelete
  75. Yay, Mindy! I'm so excited about your debut being on the shelves. Must run to Walmart and buy my very own copy!!!

I remember judging your submission in a contest. The Maggie perhaps? I was blown away by your powerful writing and compelling story that pulled me from the first line.

Isn't Love Inspired smart to offer you a contract! Can't wait to read The Doctor's Family Reunion!

BTW, your hubby is a jewel. Passing out cards with your cover and info on how to purchase your book. That guy is a keeper, for sure. Does he clone?

    Hugs and love!

    ReplyDelete
  76. Thanks, Janet! It was a fun story to write.

    ReplyDelete
  77. Debby, you are so funny. :) And I believe it was the Genesis. You were such an encouragement to me.
Hubby does not have a clone, but after the book signing this weekend, I have a couple friends who are trying to talk him into going into business. :)

    ReplyDelete
  78. Tina, love the new look for Seekerville. What a lovely shade of blue...my favorite color! You did it just for me, right? LOL!

    ReplyDelete
  79. Yay, Mindy!!!!

I loved your book. And I want to go to Ouray - you made your setting so appealing!

And I agree with you 100% that revisions make a better story. When I send a manuscript off, I think it's the best I can do. But somehow my editor can always pull out a much better book with some on-target suggestions.

And the business card idea? LOVE IT!

Chips and salsa for lunch! Thank you!

    ReplyDelete
  80. I love the new look for Seekerville. Very elegant. Very sweet.

    ReplyDelete
  81. Mindy, this article was great. Thank you so much for sharing and congrats. It is a nice cover.

I too love the new look of Seekerville. =)

    ReplyDelete
  82. What an exciting day! Seekerville has changed! Beautiful design!

Congratulations, Mindy! I love hearing about people getting "THE CALL". And thanks for all the tips afterward!

Can't wait to see everyone at the conference. I'll probably look like a deer in the headlights, but don't take it personally! LOL.

    Cheers,

  83. Just FYI, I look a lot different now than my picture here. Much shorter hair now and glasses are a bit different.

    Hopefully still recognizable!!

  84. ACFW is almost here and I get to see Seekers and Seekervillagers!! Yay!! CAN NOT WAIT!

  85. Mindy, We've taken many mini-vacations in Michigan and love those little towns along the lake. What took you from Michigan to Texas? The lure of cowboys? If so, I can relate!

    Janet

    ReplyDelete
  86. Congratulations, Mindy. I'm looking forward to reading your debut book.

Your post started with a mirror image of my writing career so you're an inspiration to me.

Great advice, too. Thanks for sharing your experience.

    ReplyDelete
  87. MIndy, this is such a positive way to look at life after THE CALL. I especially appreciate the tip about the business cards ... and having folks who believe in what you're doing also help with the promo. I'm convinced that word-of-mouth is the best 'social media.'

And that cover is gorgeous and inviting. Will there be more stories in the same location?

    Oh, and congratulations!!

  90. Mindy,

    Hello fellow-Texan.

I'm w/you. I don't like sales at ALL. My husband used to be a car salesman and can talk to anyone. I'm one of those who hem-haw around, half-apologizing just for mentioning something I think people would be interested in...even on fb.

I hope I'm like you if I ever get a contract and work better under deadline.

  91. Congrats, Mindy.....so happy for you!
I won your book on a nice person's blog and can't wait to receive it...hooray!
    I finished Ruthy's FFtheLawman ....loved it....posted review on A.
Hope all you great writers of Seekerville keep on writing!!

  92. Congratulations, Mindy! I love hearing success stories, and I wish you the very best. Thank you for sharing your insights. I'm actually more of a "sales-y" type person, and LOVE talking to new people, so I think the marketing part sounds fun!

And Seekerville, love the new look!

  93. Congrats, Mindy. Thank you for sharing your thoughts on after The Call. Love your hubby's idea for promoting your debut. Beautiful header image, Tina. As always you've done a magnificent job with it.

  94. Sorry gang. Had to step out for a bit and do some last minute shopping for conference. Gala dress is finally checked off the list.
Jan, I think God made Ouray way more appealing than I did, but it's good to know I did it justice. :)

  95. Hi, Sue! Looking forward to meeting you at conference.

  96. Janet, Michigan's failing job market brought me to Texas back in the early 80's. When I was 5. :P Yes, cowboys were part of the lure, along with a thriving job market, however I was here for the longest time before I ever saw a REAL cowboy!

  97. Hi, Nancy C! Yes, I have at least two more stories planned with the same setting. Gives me a great excuse for those "research" trips. :D

  98. Howdy, Connie! Yes, I'm just like you when it comes promoting stuff. I guess God paired us up with them salesmen for a reason. :)

    ReplyDelete
  99. Hi, Jackie! Congrats to you, too. I hope you enjoy the book.

  100. Stephanie, it sounds like there are a lot of us who could take lessons from you. Perhaps you should share some tips on promoting.

  101. Mindy, I'm blown away that you didn't see a real cowboy for ages. Here I thought they grew on mesquite, like those bushes money grows on in the Midwest. ;-)

The weather had to be a shock after Michigan. In a good way, of course.

  102. Janet, I miss the changing seasons, however I don't miss the long winters. When we get snow, it's usually gone in a day or two. And no one around here even knows what snow shovels are.

It would be nice if cowboys grew on trees. But most of them steer clear of the city. Once you get out into the smaller towns and ranching communities, though, then you see lots of them.

  103. I would miss the seasons to the max.

Although the fact that they change so completely up here just says I'm getting to old to wish them away.

    Drat and double drat!!!

JACKIE!!!! THANK YOU!!!!! I'm so grateful for your compliments.... and the fact that you read that absolutely adorable wonderful farm-fresh book!!!! and that you're posting a review.

    Thank you! Bless you!

I used Mary and Ivan Connealy on that book, for farm expert advice because they did dairying for years.... and one review said she wavered between 4 and 5 stars because she felt SO SORRY FOR THE WOMAN FARMER that she couldn't relax for her!!!

Mary clearly did her job well, right? She kept saying things like, "Don't make it a dairy farm, Ruthy, can't you just torture her instead? Or shoot her????? Keep it simple, lessen her pain."

(She'll deny that, but youse know I'm talkin' true!)

So I think that review said I did my job accurately and well, LOL!

And THAT HERO. Oh my stars, named after my son Zach.... Oh my stars, oh my stars.... A-stinkin'-dorable!

Oh, sorry, this is Mindy's gig.

    Oops!

  104. Ruthy, you can gush all you want. I don't mind.

  105. Congratulations, Mindy! And what a sweet hubby! I have writing friend, who describes herself much like you, and when her non-fiction book on gardens came out, he surprised her with a new paint job on the car...advertising her book (not just on the door, we're talking the whole car). LOL, she couldn't get away from it. I think I'd prefer the hubby who hands out business cards. ;)

    ReplyDelete
  106. Oh, my goodness, Sandra! I think I would have been mortified. I also think I should not mention this to my husband. I can see it now, he'll have my car wrapped in my book cover. Business cards are much better idea. :)

    ReplyDelete
  107. How fun, Sandra, as long as its someone else's hubby and car, right? Bookmarks, Mindy? I could do that for you as we'll as shout outs after I've read the book. Big CONGRATULATIONS!!!

    ReplyDelete
  108. Hi, Marianne! I do have book marks, but thanks. And shout outs are always appreciated. :)

  109. Congrats Mindy! So excited for you. I agree with several things on your list, especially the working under a deadline. I also agree that Love Inspired had had beautiful covers lately.

  111. Hi Mindy,
Again, good insight. It reminds me of the old saying, "Be careful what you wish for." It's a whole other kind of work, but every published author I've talked to says it's worth it. I am up for it, but recognize that it's going to change my life.
RUTHY, I am a third of the way through Lawman's Second Chance. Am enjoying it.

  112. Can't wait to see your dress, Mindy!

I guess I need to think about packing, huh??

I'm so bad. I'll do it Wednesday night in a total panic.

    ReplyDelete
  113. Hi, Terri! Thanks for stopping by. :)

    ReplyDelete
  114. Missy, thou shalt not procrastinate. :) I've already started setting a few things out, things I need to be sure I won't forget, then I'll make a list with everything I can possibly think of so I can go over that before I leave. Packing won't actually take place until Thursday morning.

  115. Obliviously I must get out to smaller towns, Mindy, to see the real cowboys. Though I've got to admit I loved the TV variety.

Thanks for chatting with us in Seekerville! Looking forward to spending time with Blakely and Trent! And seeing you at ACFW!

  116. I loved this post!

I laughed out loud at the "Daniels's world" part! The blurb on my new one has a phrase that gave me pause. It was something that had been added in later, and I thought, "Wait, I never wrote anything like that!"

Uh, yes I did. I just forgot about it between August 2012 and the day the books arrived (today!).

    Congratulations on this wonderful debut!!

    And to many more!!

  117. Yay and congratulations, Mindy! What a pretty cover! That is a very fast turnaround. Don't we all owe the food scientists who develop frozen pizzas a big thank you? I'm looking forward to reading it.

Seekerville, what a nice new look today! Love the empty boat. Keep sending it back to the Island for the rest of us!
