Thursday: One of the best things about self-publishing is taking control of your writing career. You’re the boss! Once the business of writing is done, you need to get your book to retailers. How do you format an e-book? Should you do a print version? What about a cover? Marie Force, New York Times and USA Today bestselling author of contemporary romance and romantic suspense, started the E-Book Formatting Fairies to help authors navigate the world of self-publishing by working with them to create e-book and print-on-demand files ready for distribution to major retailers. Today the Fairies blog about helping authors self-publish their work.

Friday: We welcome back Whitaker House authors Jennifer AlLee and Lisa Richardson, who will be talking about writing series and maintaining continuity. They will be giving away two sets of the first two books in their Charm and Deceit series.

So You Think You Can Write!  This year Harlequin is expanding opportunities for authors by introducing a separate New Adult competition, which will take place on Wattpad. Between the contests, five new authors will each be awarded a publishing contract with Harlequin/Mills & Boon.

The contests are part of So You Think You Can Write (soyouthinkyoucanwrite.com), the free 24/7 online conference that will take place September 16–20, 2013.  So You Think You Can Write allows hopeful romance novelists to spend a week with more than 50 Harlequin and Mills & Boon editors from Toronto, New York and London through social media tools including podcasts, webinars, blogs, live chats, writing challenges, community discussions and Twitter events. Aspiring authors will attend a virtual romance-writing “boot camp” designed to teach them how to write a romance novel that will attract the attention of publishers.  So You Think You Can Write helps participants prepare completed manuscripts for submission to the So You Think You Can Write contests beginning September 23.

  1. Good to see Dotti and Narelle in one of the photos.

I am wondering what does an author who writes suspense wear to a genre party?

Love seeing all the photos looks like everyone is having fun.

    ReplyDelete
  2. Probably a hat like Sherlock Holmes.

    Good question, Jenny!!

    ReplyDelete
  3. I have seen some of the photos of the historical authors and contemporary.

    ReplyDelete
  4. Everyone looks like they're having such fun. You guys enjoy yourself! Congrats to all the winners.

  5. Love the genre costumes the best.

Mary you very at home in Western. Go figure.

  7. Thanks for the conference pics! So much fun!!! Love the idea of a genre party. Wouldn't that make a great book club evening?!

    ReplyDelete
  8. Oh my stars.... Okay, I'm excited about all the fun they're havin', yaddi yaddi yah, but look at this:

Amazon Best Sellers Rank: #18 Free in Kindle Store (See Top 100 Free in Kindle Store)
#1 in Kindle Store > Kindle eBooks > Literature & Fiction > Genre Fiction > Romance > Inspirational > Christian

I'm totally blown away by the niceness of folks... now I get that the book is FREE... :) But how cool is that to be #1 in Christian Inspirational free books?????

(okay, maybe I'm the ONLY CHRISTIAN FREE BOOK out there, but let me live in my wealth of imaginative glamour for a minute, okay????)

    I love the genre dinner!!!!

    Oh, how fun!

Must go write something... And coffee, need coffee, I brought some for all o' youse as we continue to take the world by storm on our WRITING WEEKEND!!!

    ReplyDelete
  9. Am I allowed to think your #1 spot is sad, Ruthy? Seeing how you booted Melissa's free novella out of #1 and she's not even out of the hospital to fight back???

I'm happy for you though; truly I am. :-)

    ReplyDelete
  10. If you all wouldn't mind praying for Melissa and her baby, Nathan. Nathan is jaundiced and not eating well. Melissa has been discharged from the hospital but is still staying there with Nathan, who won't be able to leave for a while yet. I'll let you know if things are improving after I talk to Melissa later today, but she was feeling pretty disappointed and worried yesterday.

Thanks for praying everyone! It's so great to have a community where we can come and share some of these burdens.

    ReplyDelete
  11. Big babies get jaundiced often. Doesn't that seem ironic?

Praying for his bilirubin levels to even out and for the big guy to realize that food is essential!

Our little Brody did this, and for a couple of weeks was listed as failure to thrive, a big, 9 lb + baby boy who just seemed to be indignant because he had to work for food!!!

It was funny but worrisome but he's thriving now, and food???

Well, let me just say he eats well as a happy three-year-old who is never full. :)

    Praying!!!!

    ReplyDelete
  12. Oh, did I nudge Melissa out of #1!!!!

I would have never done that on purpose, don't you know, especially to a sweet new mama, so MELISSA JAGEARS!!!!

    I'm sorry, sweet thing!!!!!

    But hey, honey, you snooze?

    You lose!

    :)

Hugging you, that new baby and #1 just because I can.

    Ruthy

    ReplyDelete
  13. Praying for Melissa and baby Nathan.

And I've taken the hat off, you'll all be relieved to know!!!!

    ReplyDelete
  14. Praying for Melissa and Nathan. That happened with my daughter as well.

Congrats to Annie and Jan for winning the prizes Julie and I gave away. Jan, I'm SO glad you won because I felt awful when I realized that you may have been the only person I missed responding to all day! Justice. ;)

Loved chatting up historical costume with Janet and Debby last night and playing dress up.

Debby introduced me to the LI editors so I am forever grateful and in her debt which seems to be an easier load to bear then the one I owe to TINA! just kidding. Love you and your boa!

    back to prepping!
(Oh, I just got to hang out with Helen and Carol 1k1hr Moncado!!)

##JENNY - we've been hanging out with Narelle and Dottie. They are so sweet and amazing. I don't want them to go home unless they promise to return soon. Narelle is CP with my Inky sister Suzie Johnson YAY!!

    ReplyDelete
  18. Hey, Narelle delivered hug to me from Jenny. So fun to visit with her. Plan to see her again this evening.

Having a great time. And not spending much time on the internet, of course.

Just slipped up to my room for a COKE and dropped in to see how you all are getting along.

  20. Great WE, but talk about the rise of the green eyed envy monster! ACFW was not in the budget this year. Sooo, I guess I'll start collecting coins-from-pockets again as I do the laundry and see how far that fundraiser gets me for next year, LOL!

Love the photos. Looks like the genre party was a hit.

    ReplyDelete
  21. Congrats to all the winners, too. Ruthy went a little nuts with the giveaways yesterday.

Hee, that's why we put her in charge of things like that, LOL!

  36. I was wishing I was there - up until Erica posted on FB about the bats. Then, last night I had a dream about those 2 bats, but they were spending the day in my classroom and I had to call maintenance to get rid of them.

So, for today, I'll be happy to admire from afar.

    ReplyDelete

  37. Mary Clone. I was missing the videos but just saw your post and now know why. No more nightmares okay?

    ReplyDelete
  38. I told Erica to call Mary and show her the bats....

  68. OH MY.
I got 5 hours of sleep and I feel like I could conquer the world (as long as they let me go right back to bed!)

Thanks for sharing photos and so much of the fun. It was an amazing weekend and I can't wait to do it again (after some sleep!)

I just found out late last night that I missed Susan Anne Mason here...ugh... I hate that part!

I got to spend so much time with my Inky sisters and Seekers and Seeker villagers - the fellowship, worship, encouragement and opportunities. I'm praying right now that God will provide a way for me to do it again and for that person reading this that needs to be here next year WILL be here. (well, wherever HERE is next Sept.)

    love you guys
