May Contest Update

Today we're going back. Way back to Unpublished Island. First a little history lesson.

The Seekers are all contest winners and finalists who collided on the contest road. When we met in August of 2005, NONE of us were published. Our plan was to pray each other off Unpublished Island. We did! In 2011 the last Seeker left the island!

So the Contest Update isn't simply a fun feature of Seekerville. We know it's an important part of the journey!

Our May Contest Diva!
2014—Great Expectations, Inspy—First Place
2013—ACFW Genesis Finalist, Contemporary
2013—Category 5, Contemporary—First Place
2013—Duel on the Delta, Inspy—First Place
2012—ACFW Genesis Semifinalist, Women’s Fiction
2011—ACFW Genesis Finalist, Women’s Fiction
2007—ACFW Genesis Finalist, Romantic Suspense

In 2005 I entered the Genesis. What an amateur I was! Story One got bled all over by the wonderful Rose McCauley. I’ve never forgotten her because her critiques were right and she was so encouraging. Thank you, Rose!

When Story Two finaled in 2007, I was stunned. One final judge loved the entry; the other didn’t. I could not have gotten two more opposite scores. What could I do with that feedback?

Life pushed writing aside until 2011 when I entered the Genesis again. I made the semis and was thrilled—until I saw my scoresheets. Two judges didn’t like my entry, and one told me to scrap the plot and start over.

But this was the same story that finaled in ’07—and it was far better now. Here I was a semi-finalist—and so discouraged! Probably the last to make the cut, I began to doubt that I knew anything about writing. I was done with contests. It was too hard.

Then I finaled.

Two second-round judges replied to my thank you, one of them a big name. Her reply motivated me to keep going.

I entered the Genesis in 2012 but didn’t final. That was the year everyone and their pseudonym entered because it was the last year for partials.

So I entered 2013 not sure what to do. While on vacation, I read the Seekerville contest update, and it hit me like I’d never seen it before. Here were all these contests, most of them smaller than the revered Genesis. What if I entered Story Three in a bunch? I’d been getting such mixed feedback from one contest once a year. What if I got more eyes on my story? Maybe that would help me decipher the feedback.

Boy, did it.

Feedback from the Delta contest came as I made the Genesis semis. I applied feedback from both contests to my Genesis entry in case I finaled and entered that version in the Category 5.

Feedback from Category 5 came after I made the Genesis finals. I took that feedback and later the final Genesis feedback and revised my story again. In late 2013, I entered it in the Great Expectations contest.

What blew me away was that with each contest, my scores improved. With every single round of revisions.

For the first time I had feedback from more than three people. When one judge says something, it’s easy to dismiss it. But when three out of ten judges point something out, it’s an issue. The multiple contests helped me get honest perspective and pinpoint what was one person’s preference and what needed to be addressed.

Now I’m routinely getting excited feedback when people read my work. Like the toothpaste commercials, I can honestly say that nine out of ten readers love my opening chapters! I’ve learned so much from contests—technique, style, and confidence—and I know my opening chapters would not be where they are today if I hadn’t entered that first chapter in a handful of contests.

So go. Enter. Enter lots. Enter for the feedback, not the prestige. And who knows if the awards start filing in!

  1. I miss the contests. Next year I'll have published ones eligible. Maybe I'll enter them in something. We'll see.

Right now I have coffee duties to execute. So coffee's brewing.

    ReplyDelete
  2. Thanks, Helen. Love your coffee! As I read what authors go through to get their work published, I sit back in amazement! And you do it for me! YOU GUYS ROCK!!! Thanks..I am ever so grateful

    ReplyDelete
  3. Wow so many contests? Is this something I should think about in the future? Are there contests every month?

I would love to win a copy of Jill Nelson's book. I am signed up to take her class and I am really looking forward to it.

    ReplyDelete
  4. We do this EVERY MONTH, WILANI. Some you must be members of RWA or ACFW, so read the directions closely.

I'm signed up for her class too!!!

  5. Helen put the pot on -all is well with the world.

    Happy Friday!

I had Cronuts shipped in from New York City for today!!! They'll arrive at first light.

    First come, first serve.

    ReplyDelete
  6. Congratulations to our diva, Sally!!

    WOOOOOT!!!!

    ReplyDelete
  7. Tina, I just know I'm going to get laughed right out of Seekerville because I've never heard of Cronuts! I had to do my research to discover they're a NY original... a croissant-doughnut hybrid that cost $5 EACH. Wow!!! They must be great! I'm standing in line here for one of them. :)

I'm always hesitant about entering contests. It's so much easier to keep writing and get local input from critique partners than to throw a manuscript out into unknown territory. One contest entry came back with totally conflicting feedback from two judges and vague notes from a third who apparently hadn't read my submission. That was a confusing rather than helpful experience.

I sometimes wonder if contest placements such as Sally mentions actually pave the way to publication, and where my writing energy should be best spent. ::sigh:: I may need two of those Cronuts tonight. I have my $10 in hand. :)

    ReplyDelete
  8. Cronuts? Never heard of them either, but I am a Midwesterner. Must be why.

I'm about to go to bed (up editing late!) but had to stop by Seekerville today. Carol, if you've got good crit partners, they can be a big help. I haven't had crit partners in a number of years :(, so I desperately needed feedback! I think what I'll tell people from now on is don't enter one contest; enter a handful. All that feedback together is really eye-opening. But then again, that's my take on it. :)

    Night, all!

  9. I LOOOOOOOVE contests! If I weren't up to my eyeballs in deadlines and other projects, I'd be polishing up all sorts of story lines.

As it is, contest season always makes me think of Keli Gwyn. I enter All The Blue of Heaven in a contest way back in 2011. It was my very first one, and her comments kept me afloat for MONTHS after I first read them. They were beyond uplifting, but more than that- she told me exactly what she loved and what needed work. That story has been an Amazon bestseller for more than a year (along with the next in the series).

As I'm starting the third in the Colors of Faith series, it brings me back to that contest and to the very first person to ever read my writing besides my sister!

Thank you, Keli and thank you, all judges!

  10. Wow, congratulations Sally on contest journey.

Okay, Tina, what is a cronut?

I would love to be entered to win either of the books. Thank you for the opportunity.

Off to Tennesse, eight hour drive down today, eight hour drive back to Indiana on Sunday. I'm not really fond of long, short-turnaround trips, but the scenery will be beautiful!

    Have a wonderful weekend everyone!

    Smiles & Blessings,
    Cindy W.

  11. Congrats contest Diva Sally! You crown has been well earned, both for your success and in helping me with The Preacher's Promise which has met with some contest success lately. :) Big congrats and thank you!!

I'm waiting for my crount too Tina. I am firmly committed to eating just one, no matter what people say.

  12. A croissant-doughnut hybrid

Homemade version of a croissant-doughnut cut in a half
Cronut is a croissant-doughnut pastry invented and trademarked[1][2] by Dominique Ansel Bakery in New York City.[3][4] The pastry is made by frying a laminated dough in grape seed oil. The fried pastry is then sugared, filled, and glazed.[5]

    Wikipedia.

  13. One contest entry = a handful of cronuts.

Carol, several Seekers sold DIRECTLY related to contest wins.

    ReplyDelete
  14. Thanks Tina for the contest update. If I'm only writing inspirational, do you suggest only entering contests with that category? It's contemporary. I've always been hesitant to enter main stream contemporary. Thanks!

    Congrats Sally!

    ReplyDelete
  15. Sally, thanks for sharing your experiences. They're a reminder that perseverance is key! I love contests too, just for the feedback--as hard as it is to take sometimes. :)

I would love to be entered in the drawings for both books! Happy Friday. :)

    ReplyDelete
  16. I see a few contests here that I may enter. After my first two requests (and rejections), I received some conflicting feedback from the editors. My critique partners are great, but I think more feedback from people in the industry would be helpful right now. And getting the attention of an editor would be a good start in the right direction.

I would like to be entered for either giveaway.

    ReplyDelete
  17. Thanks for the contest update.

Best wishes to all who enter. Remember these are great preludes to working with editors.

    ReplyDelete
  18. Way to go SALLY. Look at all those wins. woo hooo

    Congratulations.

    ReplyDelete
  19. You know, Tina, it really isn't fair that the pictures of unpubbed island shows paradise. It sure is enticing to stay. Especially when I'm in withdrawal because our annual vacation to the Florida Keys didn't work out this year.

    However...

I'll focus instead on all those contests I'd love to enter, but I'm not going to because seven Genesis entries are enough for right now. Monday is the day to find out if I'm advancing to the semi finals.

Sally, what an inspiring testimony! Congratulations on all the wins!

  20. I've entered the ACFW Genesis and the Oregon Christian Writers Cascade Contests. Judges comments were opposite each other. But after awhile some of the suggestions started to make sense to me. I agree, they are helpful--definitely worth it!

I'd love to win a copy of Jill's book!

  21. Good morning. It's spring here in Nebraska. I'm thinking of putting my parka away.

Maybe on Sunday, not today, it's FREEZING!

    ReplyDelete
  22. Thank you for all the congrats!

Crystal, you made me laugh. Unpubbed Island does look like a paradise. Maybe there's quicksand just outside the shot?

    ReplyDelete
  23. Oops, I was so busy thinking about paradise that I forgot to mention that I'd love to be entered in the giveaway for both Jill's book and Ruthy's. Love her cover.

  24. Love your contest updates, Tina! Great way to find out whats coming up each month.

Yes, entering your "baby" in a contest can be intimidating. But what you get in return, even if you don't final, is usually worth it. For one thing, if you're working with the same 2-4 critique partners all the time, a contest gives you several pairs of fresh eyes on your manuscript, and the insight can be priceless.

And congrats to our contest diva of the month! That's quite a track record, Sally!!!

    ReplyDelete
  25. Great attitude Mz. Zey Zey!!!!

    ReplyDelete
  26. Chilly again here, too, MARY. And cloudy. :( Supposed to warm up tomorrow, though.

    COME ON, SPRING!!!!!

    ReplyDelete
  27. Unpublished Island is a wonderful place. That's why so many writers are tempted to stay. It's warm and cozy and nurturing.

    But it's only TEMPORARY!!!!

We want to kick you off!!!!!

    ReplyDelete
  28. Sally congrats on being the Contest Diva!
Hearing feedback from multiple judges can help you figure when something is a real problem.

Still working on my Killer Voices entry so no contests for me this month. Good luck to all those who enter.

  29. DANA!! Welcome. Dan is the president of CWOW. Christian Writers of the West!

  30. Good morning lovely Seekers! Congratulations to Sally! You are definitely on the right track. I can see publication in your future.

OKAY, big breath here, I think I am ready for my BIG ANNOUNCEMENT!

And it proves Tina's point about contests!!

    See next message....

    ReplyDelete
  31. Congratulations Sally! I admire your fortitude.

Crystal is right. Unpubbed island looks like paradise. But an annual vacation to Key West sounds phenomenal.

Please enter me in the drawings!

  32. Directly from two contests I entered, I have received multiple contract offers AND I now have an agent.

I have accepted a 3 book deal with Dave Long at BETHANY HOUSE for my historical romance "Irish Meadows"!! *Pinching myself and almost crying with joy*

I haven't announced it yet b/c I was waiting for the contract to be signed, but I was talking to Dave yesterday and it sounds like BH contracts are a slow process (it's already been over a month). So I am SQUEEING HERE!!!

And at the same time, as the result of a Seekerville contest, I have been offered a contract with Love Inspired!! All happened within a few days of each other!!

So now I have THREE publishers (my first publisher, White Rose, doesn't know this yet. Shhh.)

I just wanted to say to those of you wondering if they should enter contests - YES!! You never know what can happen. It may take a while, but if you persevere, you can do it, too!

God can dream way bigger dreams for us than we can dream ourselves!

A BIG HUGE Thank you to all you wonderful people at Seekerville for the extraordinary support and encouragement you provide. I would never be where I am now without you!

    Love and hugs,

    Sue (a Bethany House author!)

    ReplyDelete
  33. Sue!!!! I'm squeezing with you. Awesome, fabulous, wonderful, inspiring, word defying news! I am so thrilled for you.

    ReplyDelete
  34. Whoa, Sue! That's awesome!!!!!!!!! When it rains, it pours, right? Get yourself an umbrella. :D

    ReplyDelete
  35. OH MY GOSH, SUSAN ANN MASON, YOU GO GIRL!!!!! CONGRATULATIONS!!!

    ReplyDelete
  36. SUE!!!!!!!

    YAY, YAY, YAY!!!!

    CONGRATULATIONS, GIRLFRIEND! THIS IS FANTASTIC!!!!!!!!!

    ReplyDelete
  37. Thank you so much!

I am in revision mode for Love Inspired right now. Deadline this Monday (kind of ambitious on my part, but then when you don't know, you make it happen!)

My White Rose romance debuts in August 2014. Not sure about the 2nd book. Maybe by the end of 2014.

My Love Inspired will be spring 2015. And my historical with Bethany House will be Summer 2015.

Now I have to concentrate on Book 2 for Bethany House (ie. come up with a plot!!)

    *Grin*

  38. Well as we say around here..BUSY IS A GOOD THING!!!

    ReplyDelete
  39. Thank you, Terri, fellow White Rose author! I hope the editors there will be happy for me too! I've had to shelve a proposal for a third book for them. Maybe someday...

    ReplyDelete
  40. Gotta go have lunch with my mother and not spill the beans about her 80th birthday party! Did you say busy, Tina??

    ReplyDelete
  41. Sue!!! Congratulations!!! That is so wonderful!

Terri, actually we've only been to Key West once and that once was more than enough. Something about 90% of the businesses being bars and the entire city is clothing optional sends me running in the opposite direction. We spend our time van-camping in Key Largo.

    Ahhh... The memories....

    ReplyDelete
  42. Crystal - yikes! Thanks for the heads up on Key West. I had no idea. I must remember if I ever get the chance to go to choose Key Largo.

Yay to May's contest Diva Sally! Your advice to enter several contests for more helpful feedback is excellent! Great things lie ahead for you.

Sue, congratulations on landing the Bethany House and Love Inspired contracts and an agent. How thrilling!!! You rock!!

  61. GO, SALLY! You ARE a contest diva:) I know your work really shines. And you remind me of how important contests can be as far as feedback, particularly if more than one judge says the same thing. Wishing you continued success as you write your heart out for HIM!

    ReplyDelete
  62. Thanks so much, Walt. :)

And now I want to know who Sue's agent is!

    ReplyDelete
  63. I did enter my latest contest, the TARA, on Wednesday. Must keep it going!

    ReplyDelete
  64. Huge congratulations to Susan! And thanks to Sally and Tina for the encouragement. I think I was overtired when I left my previous comment last night, but I do understand the value of feedback from all available sources and I continue to enter the occasional contest. :)

    ReplyDelete
  65. Ah, thank you, Laura! So kind of you. :)

    ReplyDelete
  66. Wow, what a happy Friday. Congratulations Sally on earning the crown of Contest Diva. I agree the more input you can get from different people, the better your writing becomes.

So excited for you Sue. Can't wait to read your books from any of those publishers.

Yes, I'd like the chance to win either Jill's or Ruthy's book.

    ReplyDelete
  67. That's awesome Susan!!!! Congrats! I'm totally curious to know more about the book and series. Please share.

    Congrats again!!! :-)

    ReplyDelete
  68. Congratulations Contest Diva. I have been advised to enter more contest too, for the very reason you mentioned. For the feedback. I may have to take a closer look at a few of them. Thanks Sally, for your encouragement.

    ReplyDelete
  69. Hooray Susan! Now I have some concrete goals for finishing my speedbo novel: enter contests! Please enter my name for both drawings! Enjoy the calm spring weather, bloggers.

  71. OH MY STARS !!!! SUE MASON!!!! I am absolutely THRILLED for you!!!! There are not enough exclamation points for me to show how HAPPY I am for you, sweet lady!! Sending you a virtual bouquet of flowers and a just-baked Georgia peach cobbler *smile*. Happy Hugs, Patti Jo :)

p.s. THANKS Tina for all the contest updates.

    CONGRATS to Diva Sally Bradley!!!!

    ReplyDelete
  72. I see Tina's facebook post and came over to see what was up...

    I LAUGHED OUT LOUD.

Seriously, I don't think I've ever heard of anybody receiving multiple contract offers from different publishers for different books within DAYS. That is hilarious and wonderful and awesome!

Juggling different publishers and deadlines is tough, but I know you can do it! It looks like you won't have revisions and deadlines for each publisher at the same time, which is good.

Wow, great news and what a way to prove a point, right??

    ReplyDelete
  73. Walt, the TARA was my first final/win and the feedback was amazing.

    Good luck!

    ReplyDelete
  74. Congratulations Sue! So excited for you!

    ReplyDelete
  75. Congratulations, Susan! I love when I hear stories like these where the author gets an agent and book deals so close together. Sounds like you have a lot of writing to do!

    ReplyDelete
  76. Hi Sally Bradley, You are a sweetheart! I hope we can meet in St. Louis this year and you can remind me about this entry. Sorry I bled all over it, but glad you could find some help and encouragement from it! And I want to encourage you and anyone else still unpublished to keep persevering--learning the craft of writing, entering contests, and most of all to write a lot! As so many published authors say, it is often seven or more years before you start until you get that first contract which was very true for me--7 years from first book to first contract!

I already have Jill Nelson's book and use it each time I finish a manuscript, but please enter me in the drawing for the Ruth Logan Herne book as I LOVE her writing!

    ReplyDelete
  77. Rose, your bleeding was very gentle and very kind. :) And very deserved and needed. Thank you!

  78. Please enter me in the drawing for Ruth Logan Herne's Loving the Lawman.

  87. Sue!!!!!!

    HAPPY DANCING FOR YOU!!!!!

I do believe I remember having a conversation with someone (oddly she had your name!!!!) last fall and the conversation went something like this:

"Your work is very good, be patient and amazing things will happen!!!!!"

Okay, there was a little more back and forth than that, BUT, the crux of my concern has been allayed now, because I saw that amazing talent and didn't want you to settle for anything less than what you deserve!!!

    SO HAPPY FOR YOU!!!!!

    GLEEEEEEEEE!!!!

    :)

  88. I tried to get over here all day. Sigh. It was one of THOSE crazy-busy days.

The contests look good! :) Sally, congratulations on being the contest diva! You shared some good words.

Praying about entering more contests. I also want to begin my next story. With time at a premium I'll have to weigh out my options. :)

    Good night all!

  94. Hi! This is a great list - thanks for sharing it. I did want to mention that the Emerald City Opener contest link points to the Las Vegas RWA, not the Greater Seattle RWA page, which is the chapter hosting the contest. (I had to google the contest/conference, as I suspected it was meant to be in Seattle based on the Emerald City reference.)

I'm looking forward to checking out some of these contests. Thanks! :)
