Sandra here with a pot of chocolate velvet coffee to
celebrate the best month in the year. June. Because its summer. Yay! And its my birthday month. So I’m a bit biased. smile
Time to pack up the family and go on vacation.
Speaking of birthdays, do any of you know what special
birthday our country celebrates this year? It is the Centennial birthday of the
National Parks in the United States. This year marks the hundredth year that we
have had our wonderful national parks to visit and explore.
A This one is easy. |
How many of you will be visiting a national park this
summer? Did you know if you are a senior, you can buy a senior pass for $10.00
and with that pass you can camp half price in national forest and national park
campgrounds. You also have free entrance into national parks and national
monuments. The pass also allows you to park free or half price on national
forest trailheads. If you aren’t a senior yet, you can buy an annual park pass
which allows you entrance into any national park or monument for no extra fee.
So if you plan to visit more than one park, it is well worth the money to buy
that annual pass.
B |
I highly encourage you to visit national parks because the
park service does an excellent presentation. You learn all about the natural
history, geology, ecology, human history and all kinds of information. I use
this information in many of my books.
smile
C |
I have been traveling this past month and have visited and
enjoyed several of our national parks and national monuments. I will share with
you some photos. If any of you can name all the parks and monuments shown,
you’ll be in a drawing to win one of my audio books.
D |
Speaking of audio books, traveling is my best and favorite
time to bring out the Ipod and listen to audio books. While you travel across
the miles, enjoying the spectacular scenery, you can listen to a story written
by a favorite author. Yay.
How many of you listen to audio books? What do you think
about the experience? How do you compare it to sitting down and actually
reading the book?
For me: An audio book is a very different experience than
reading written words. You don’t quite get into the emotion of the story like
you do when reading. It can easily be compared to the difference of reading a
book or seeing the same story in a movie.
What happens when reading is that you can internalize and
bring in so many of your own experiences into the story. There is much more
expression of emotion. When listening to a story it is very much like watching
a movie. You are hearing the story in audible. You are seeing the story in a movie.
Hearing and seeing are sensory intakes that can wrap up your emotions, but it
is more difficult to do so.
G |
So why listen to audio books?
As a writer, I have to budget my time. The more time I spend
writing, the less time I have to read. But reading is important to a writer.
Reading is how one develops their sense of story. So for me, listening to a
story during times I can’t read or write help me use my time better. I can listen to a story while doing mundane
chores like laundry, dishes, housework, yard work, etc. (okay, I don’t do yard work, but
some of you might. LOL)
H |
I first heard about audio books from my niece who listened
to them during her hour long commute every morning and evening to and from
work. What a great use of that time.
Being a senior now, I encounter many friends and
acquaintances who tell me they love to read, but can’t any more because of loss
of eyesight. Kindles and other e readers help because they can enlarge the
words, but truthfully, failing eyesight makes it very tiring to read even with
big print. How much nicer to kick back and listen to a story.

So here are some reasons to use Audible. What other ways
have you used Audible books? Share with us today and your name will be put
in the box for an iPod and all three of my audio books.
G.G Martinsen available on Amazon |
Speaking of iPods, how many of you have one? Have you seen
them lately? They are the size of a credit card and slip right into your pocket
so you can take it with you anywhere.
Most cars have cd or cassette (don’t laugh, we still have
one) players and you can get audio books from the library and play them in your
car.
Authors, have you considered putting your books on Audible?
You might want to do so. I think that as our population ages, you will see more
demand for them. And if yours is already out there, you have an advantage.
For information on how to do this, read my previous article
here.
Click on the blue audio in the archives and find more
articles about Audible books.
If you haven’t tried an Audible book yet, try one this
summer. You won’t be disappointed.
Be sure and comment to be put in the drawing for prizes.
Sandra Leesmith writes sweet romances to warm the heart. Sandra loves to play pickleball, hike, read, bicycle and write. She is based in Arizona, but she and her husband travel throughout the United States in their motor home and enjoy the outdoors. You can find Sandra's books here on Amazon. Boy do I need to get back in the habit of audio books and renew my Audible membership. I listened to one a week from the library when I was commuting last year.
ReplyDeleteI even have two iPods. An oldie and one the size of a folded half a dollar.
Thanks for the reminder. Will take the geography test in the am. If I dare.
In high school, I'd borrow audiobooks from the library --which was really good because the physical CDs could be pretty pricey. My favorite were Brian Jacques' Redwall series because they were full-cast, narrated by the author (R.I.P. "Sir Brian) and in a fantasy series full of quests and songs and riddles, they actually set the lyrics to music (which theoretically were composed by the author, since he's included on the audiobook). So it really was like the full experience (even if the tunes weren't always what I envisioned in my head). Single narrator audiobooks can't really compare to me, though the narrators I've heard do a pretty good job.
ReplyDeleteGood point about audiobooks providing accessibility to readers --you're right, sometimes large type print books/ebooks can't cut it. =)
I love, love, love listening to books on CD. They especially brighten up my daily commute to work, and I believe have helped sharpen some of my writing skills. I still don't have an iPod, though, and want to get one for the same reason... why listen to music when you can hear a great book!
ReplyDeleteI enjoy listening to books on CD when traveling. It makes the travel time go by quickly. They are also good for when no one else is home and you want to turn it up loud and climb into the story with the characters. I love it.
ReplyDeleteI don't have an iPod but would absolutely love one. Thank you for the chance to win one.
Many blessings to everyone,
Cindy W.
I always enjoy your beautiful photographs tucked within your posts, Sandra.
ReplyDeleteWhile cleaning, I love to turn on music to keep me motivated, but honestly, I don't think I've ever listed to an audio book. My main reason is I never thought I could keep my focus. During my commute into work, I always listen to Joyce Meyer, to get my head and heart in the right place, but you may have convinced me to give a book a shot.
Good morning, SANDRA! I love your vacation pics! You're seeing so much of our beautiful country! Another nice thing about the senior pass (National Parks consider you a senior when you hit 62) and the annual park pass is that if you have a carload of family / friends with you, they get into the parks under the same pass.
ReplyDeleteI know lots of people who listen to books when they travel -- car or plane. I usually don't because travel is a rare time to let my brain create my own stories -- or to visit with the person(s) I'm traveling with. Of course, I'm not on the road even a fraction of the time you are. The extra nice thing about audio when doing a road trip is that you don't have your eyes glued to a kindle screen or book page--you can continue to gaze out the window and enjoy the scenery!
JILL -- I listen to Joyce Meyer to/from work, too!!
ReplyDeleteGLYNNA - She makes me look forward to the commute. :)
ReplyDeleteHI Glynna Good morning. I know you're up early like me. smile And I guess I'll have to go try Joyce Meyer. I rarely listen to the radio. How funny that both you and Jill listen to the same program. Must be good.
ReplyDeleteAnd you reminded me of the Senior pass a couple weeks ago. Yes, they really are the best $10.00 you will spend.
Have a good day.
Hi Tina I did the same thing -- went through a spell when I didn't listen to audio. Then when I remembered I said the same thing. Wow. I should go get that out again and listen. Taking this long trip reminded me. smile
ReplyDeleteYou won't be disappointed.
Hi Sandra
ReplyDeleteI haven't really done much with audible books - although I think I should try. I have a short commute, so I don't really want to listen in my car. Knowing me, I'd get caught up in the story and spend too many minutes in the parking lot listening to the end of a chapter and end up being late to work. *heh*
Can't listen to anything at work because of security, so that leaves home and I'm working on getting Guppy to read books there. It's still something I want to try, though, because I can see how that would be very cool for road trips.
Not going to even try the geography quiz, although I recognize some (old faithful) of the pictures. Kudos to anyone who can get them!
Off to work...
Dear Artist Librarian (I love your name-smile) I think its wonderful when an author can do their own book because they know the pronunciation and emotion. The problem is you really need a good sound system to do it right. Most of us don't have that equipment.
ReplyDeleteI do like audios that have a male doing the male role and a female doing the female role. That gets pricey so isn't done as much either.
But a good narrator can really do a book justice. I love my narrator, Rachel Fulginiti, She did a great job with my books.
Hi Deb H You'll be an expert yourself after reading aloud to the Gupster. smile. I 'm laughing at your comment that you'll end up being late for work because of getting caught up in the story. That has happened to me. Not late for work, but getting distracted and sitting there listening even after the clothes are all folded. LOL
ReplyDeleteBut that happens when reading too.
Or watching a movie.
Oh well, I'm easily distracted.
Hi Elaine Yay, you listen during your commute. I think that would make a commute so much more interesting and tolerable. I used to commute and wish I had thought of it.
ReplyDeleteHappy listening.
And your name is in for the drawing.
Hi Cindy, How wonderful that you already listen to audio books. I'm sure you will enjoy them on an ipod as well for travel. But how nice that you can put it on a speaker while at home.
ReplyDeleteYou're in for the drawing. smile
Happy listening.
Hi Jill, Don't want to recommend you stop listening to your inspiration. smile But maybe on the way home from work. Or doing something else.
ReplyDeleteHow funny that both you and Glynna listen to the same program. Maybe others do also. I've never listened to Joyce Meyer, but I hardly ever turn on the radio. Maybe I should try it. smile
Have a great day.
Hi Kate I never thought about listening while working out. What a great idea. Thanks for the suggestion. Working out can be soooooo boring. But necessary.
ReplyDeleteHave a great day.
Tina mentioned renewing her membership to audible.com. I should mention that if you do join audible.com your monthly fee which is considerably less than the price of an audible book, includes one book a month. Then they have sales, etc. Audible books are a bit more pricey than kindle books, but they are worth the price.
ReplyDeleteYou can also get audible books at most libraries.
SANDRA - I don't listen to Joyce on the radio. Over the years, I've ordered a ton of her teachings on CD. Check out her website: joycemeyer.org and click on the bookstore - there's some great messages.
ReplyDeleteI still have a cassette player and use it often. I don't have a CD player. I don't have DVD player either.
ReplyDeleteThank you Jill How funny. See, I don't know who Joyce is. I will go check. I just assumed radio. I wonder if Glynna does CD also. Probably. lol
ReplyDeleteBut thanks for the tip. Others might be interested also. So if you win the ipod you can put her recordings on there also. smile
Hi Cathyann40 So have you had trouble finding cassettes? Maybe at garage sales. I still use mine also but I have tons of cassettes. I will use them as long as that car keeps running. Hubby loves old cars so that could be awhile.
ReplyDeleteYou might like the ipod. Your name is in the drawing.
Have a great day.
No one is recognizing the photos. Hey folks. If you haven't been to these parks. YOU MUST GO. They are so inspiring and gorgeous. The National Parks do a wonderful job of explaining what you are looking at. They also tell about all the wildlife in the area and the human history also.
ReplyDeleteListening while on the treadmill really passes the exercise time fast. And Sandra, I kind of miss the old cassette tapes, you know, like having to turn them over all the time and rewind and doing it the wrong way and then having to fast forward and. . . well, I will admit an ipod is much nicer these days. But still . .
ReplyDeleteSANDRA, Happy Birthday to our National Park system! I'm thankful Teddy Roosevelt added so many during his presidency. Thanks for sharing your photos. This country is so diverse and beautiful. We have a National Park pass and love it. Haven't used it lately, but we toured the West a couple of summers and made great use of it then. The only place I'd expected to get in with it and didn't, was Mt. Rushmore. Still, the monument was worth every penny.
ReplyDeleteBTW, Indiana is celebrating it's Bicentennial. There's been lots of interesting articles in the newspaper about its history.
It's so cool that some of your books are audio. I have listened to 'Tis and Jan Karon's Mitford series in the car. Frank McCourt read his memoir. His accent made the story come to life. My DH and I have listened to many books on trips but I'll admit I have sometimes drifted off. I wasn't driving! :-)
Janet
Hi Cindy Great idea to listen while on the treadmill. I bet that makes the time fly. Thanks for sharing that idea.
ReplyDeleteAnd yes, cassettes can be trying. Or when one gets stuck and you unwind the whole thing inside the machine. aaaargh.
Ipods are much easier. However, we have some great oldies on the cassettes which is why we still listen to them. lol
Have a great day.
Hi Janet I remember when you did all those trips. The park pass is really nice to have. When we were younger and traveled in the summers, we always bought the annual pass. It was so worthwhile. And I don't mind fees to the parks anyway. They are so wonderful and I don't mind supporting them one bit.
ReplyDeleteI'm glad you enjoy them as well.
And congrats on the bicentennial. Our centennial in Arizona was 2012. We are a much younger state than Indiana. smile
Love all the pix, Sandra! Unfortunately, Yellowstone is the only one I immediately recognize because of Old Faithful, and that's only because of seeing it in pictures. Never had a chance to visit in person.
ReplyDeleteI must also confess never having listened to an entire audio book. I'm not commuting anymore like I used to several years ago when volunteering at a therapeutic horseback riding center 45 minutes from home, and I never seem to think about picking up an audio book for when we travel.
At least two of my novels are available in audio format. One Imperfect Christmas and The Sweetest Rain. I have listened to the first several minutes of each just to get a feel for what they're like. But since these were done by my publisher, I didn't have any say in the choice of narrator, so the books don't "sound" like what I imagined when I wrote them.
Is B possibly Yosemite? I have been there.
ReplyDeleteI finished Ruthy's book More Than a Promise which was on CD last night. It was awesome. I loved being able to listen while I was working in the kitchen while cooking, washing dishes and even while I was eating.
ReplyDeleteI am also listening to Sandra's book Loves' Promises. I enjoy the audible books whether on my kindle or on a CD.
As far as I know I will not be taking a vacation this year, Hopefully some little day trips with my friends.
Okay, and H could be Dinosaur National Monument in Utah. Been there too.
ReplyDeleteHello Sandra!
ReplyDeleteI'm so envious of your lifestyle. My husband and I have talked about living out of an RV, since we both work from home. Everytime you post at Seekerville, I get itchy feet.
I love audiobooks! Some of my fondest memories were When we homeschooled and listened to them on vacations. We'd always wait until after the other kids went back to school. Not only do prices go down on accommodations, but the National Parks were almost deserted. Audiobooks were a big part of the trip.
I also had a scary time in my life when my eyesight failed me for a couple of years. Audiobooks kept me sane. They're such a great resource for people with health issues. And to have SWEET romances available is divine. I wish more inspirational authors would consider doing them. Please throw my name in the hat.
Thanks again for your post.

HI Myra, Oh I know about a bad narrator. I have purchased audio books of favorite authors and hated the narrator because that narrator sounded so out of character for what I envisioned. That is unfortunate.
ReplyDeleteSo sorry yours aren't sounding good to you. But everyone is different in their tastes so maybe others would enjoy the audio of your two books. I'm glad to know they are on audio though.
Hi Wilani I'm so glad you are enjoying LOVE'S PROMISES on audio. I really liked my narrator on that book. Glad you liked Ruthy's book also.
ReplyDeleteHave a great day.
Myra No, B is not Yosemite but you are right on H. Dinosaur National Monument is in Utah and Colorado and is absolutely amazing. Most of the dinosaur bones in the museums around the world are from this dig.
ReplyDeleteHave a great day.
I have no clue about the national parks but the pictures are gorgeous.
ReplyDeleteI don't listen to audible books because they aren't compatible with my laptop. There are times when one would come in handy but I pretty committed to my 'book' books. That way I can slow down to savour or speed up to see what's going to happen next at will.
Hi Renee I'm so glad you enjoy audio books and what a blessing they were for you. I'm also delighted you were able to enjoy the national parks also. And your family was so wise to go off season. We were there before the big rush this spring and it is so much nicer not to have to fight the crowds. Yellowstone is especially frustrating with crowds just for parking alone.
ReplyDeleteYour name is definitely in the drawing.
Sandra, I have never listened to an audio book. I might want to try it with some books, but I really think I would not enjoy it as much as reading. When I read I like to go back and look at something again that I didn't quite get the first time. I think it would be hard to follow the story if I was listening while trying to do other things. It might be good for a long trip, although I like to read in the car. If I am traveling somewhere new, I never read but watch the scenery and I think I would be distracted from that if I was listening to a book.
ReplyDeleteMy mom had started listening to audio books when her eyesight got too bad to read, but now she is having too much trouble following along while listening that she doesn't do that much any more.
Hi Kav You are such an avid reader, I imagine audio books would slow you down. lol
ReplyDeleteI'm glad you like the photos. You have some gorgeous national parks in Canada as well. We have visited many of them also.
Happy reading.
Hi Sandy You are right in that an audio book is a whole different experience. Your reasoning applies to kindles as well if you like to go back and reread stuff. Hard to do that in a kindle also. For me anyway.
ReplyDeleteSounds like you have it all figured out. Isn't it wonderful that we are all different, yet can have so many of the same likes and dislikes? God does love variety. smile
Happy reading.
SANDRA -- You've NEVER listened to Joyce Meyer's TV program / CDs or read any of her many books????? I've been reading / watching / listening to her for almost 2 decades. An amazing, practical, down-to-earth Bible teacher. You've GOT to get acquainted with Joyce!
ReplyDeleteI listened to our audio book, Sandra, but I need to do it while I travel, otherwise it's disconnected and disjointed. Thanks for the reminder. I'll try to pick up one from the library before we hit the road in July!
ReplyDeleteOh my Glynna I guess I better check it out. I love a good Bible teacher. Thanks for the heads up.
ReplyDeleteHi Marianne I've missed you. Have you been working on the farm? Busy time.
ReplyDeleteYes, it helps to listen all at the same time. Same for reading a book too. If I have too many interruptions it makes it difficult.
Where are you traveling in July? You have some great national parks in Alberta. I love Jasper National Park and Banff National Park. Hubby and I have traveled there often.
Happy reading.
Sandra, thank you so much for this post! I don't enjoy audio books myself. They're better than nothing, but I connect with the story so much better when I see the words. However, my elderly mother suffers terribly from macular degeneration and can barely read any more. I'm going to get her hooked up with audio books! Why haven't I thought of that before?! :-)
ReplyDeleteOh Meghan I'm so thankful. I hope they work for your mother. My dad loved them after he started losing his sight. He got a Kindle too because it made the print larger and all the young folk around him were so impressed. LOL
ReplyDeleteBest wishes. I'll put your name in the drawing.
Hi Sandra!
ReplyDeleteThe hubby and I bought a pull-behind camper last November and have been venturing out to the state and national parks in GA and most recently in Florida! Other than the sheer amount of bugs summer brings out in this part of the world we love it! I've checked out several several books on cd's and my daughter finds a great variety at the Half-Price Books near her (in TX) but we've never tried audio on an IPod.
I would love to try it and to listen to your books...and learn about the parks we dream of visiting!
Thanks!
Stephanie
SANDRA, if we want to feel really young, we can compare the USA to countries abroad.
ReplyDeleteSo what is your favorite park? Know it'll be hard to narrow it down that much, but try.
Janet
Gorgeous pictures, Sandra!
ReplyDeleteI've never listened to an audio book, although one of mine, A Path toward Love, is in audio in addition to print.
Whatever I hear goes in one ear and out the other! I'm more visual.
LOVE these photos, Sandra - - such gorgeous scenery the Lord has created! :)
ReplyDeleteI have not tried an audio book yet, but plan to try one out soon. I keep hearing lots of advantages about them.
I hope whenever your June birthday is, you'll have a WONDERFUL day - - you deserve it!
Hugs, Patti Jo
p.s. Setting out a warm Georgia peach cobbler in honor of your June b'day! ;)
We listen to books on trips with our kids. It keeps them occupied and I love that we are learning while we drive! I am a fan of them.
ReplyDeleteMy kids listen to them while doing yard work and other jobs as well. I listen to them too.
Enjoy
Becky
Hi Stephanie Oh how exciting to have your RV to travel and see all the wonderful things there are to see. Yes, bugs are a problem in the summer which is why I love the high desert. No mosquitos. yay. We try and do the Rockies and other places in late spring and fall when its cold at night so no bugs.
ReplyDeleteAn ipod is great for traveling. I'll put your name in the drawing.
Have fun on your travels.
Wow, Janet Narrowing it down to a favorite is tough. For hiking its Arches National Monument. (Tetons runs close) For animals its Yellowstone. For scenery-that one is impossible because they all have amazing scenery.
ReplyDeleteIn Yellowstone last week, we saw a grizzly bear right across the river. He had killed a baby elk that had wandered off during the night and it was pretty much gone by the time we saw him at 8:30 am. But he was one happy bear. He would eat, then lay his massive head on the prey and nap. Then eat and then nap. It was so funny to watch. He was about 400 pounds. The rangers were watching close to be sure no tourists did anything stupid (which they are known to do). And she told us that the bear was tagged so they knew his weight and he was about 4 years old. That was really exciting. Sad for the elk of course, but the bear was happy.
Cara You are toooooo funny. I have to say, I'm more of a visual than auditory person also.
ReplyDeleteHappy writing.
Oh Patti Jo, Bless you. Peach cobbler for my birthday. wooohoooooooooo!!!!! Actually I'll take your peach cobbler any day, but how special to have it on my birthday. smile
ReplyDeleteYes, I hadn't realized the benefits of audio until I had to proof the audio for my books. I had to make sure the narrator was pronouncing words correctly. The first one happened to be when we were driving over 1,000 miles from Oregon to Arizona so it was perfect. I fell in love with listening while on the road.
Your name is in for the drawing.
Hi Becky You're such a smart mom. Keeping them occupied in a car prevents the bickering. LOL And it is educational as well. I like getting the tapes that explain an area we are in also. Some of the national parks have audio tours available while in the park.
ReplyDeletePatti Jo since you love cats, would you pray for my feral cat, Boo? He evidently got in a cat fight and his eyelid scratched badly. My house sitter was able to catch him and take him to the vet, (answer to prayer) and he should be okay. But more prayers would be sweet. Thanks.
ReplyDeleteSandra, Audiobooks are AWESOME! I always have one on my phone or kindle that I'm listening to. It makes me feel more productive to be listening to a book while I'm cleaning or driving or basically, whenever I can. I first fell in love with them when I lived in Denver and had an hour commute each way to work. Those were cassette tapes! GASP! My son has an iPod and it's another appendage for him. I've not quite mastered the whole iPod world but would love to give it a try! :) Blessings!
ReplyDeleteSANDRA, Arches was pretty but I'm not a hiker, especially in high altitudes.
ReplyDeleteYour grizzly sighting sounds fascinating. We loved seeing the bison in Yellowstone. One big guy just walked the center line alongside our car. Made for a great photo opt. We would see a herd in the distance moving our way and would park and wait on them to cross the road. I was shocked by the number of people who'd leave their cars and get close. Thankfully no one got hurt. But what if a bison woke up on the wrong side of the bed that day?? Rangers must shake their heads in disbelief at what visitors do. We've only seen one moose and that was right outside Yellowstone. So I vote for Yellowstone for animals, too.
We visited Rocky Mountain National Park during mating season when bull elks were rounding up females.
Have you ever seen Mountain Goats and Big Horned Sheep? We saw both on Mt. Evans, a 14-er near Denver with a road that goes to the peak. Though they were all moms and children. Guess the dads were off somewhere.
Janet
PATTI JO, I brought vanilla ice cream to put on top of your warm peach cobbler in honor of Sandra's birthday.
ReplyDeleteYummy!
Janet
Hi Sharee So you already are an audio book fan. Yes, I'm sure they helped with that commute.
ReplyDeleteSo your son will be able to help you with the ipod world. They are amazing and they are so compact which is wonderful.
Your name is in the drawing.
Hi Janet Yes, those silly bison are a nuisance when they decide to stand in the middle of the road. There is no way you are going to move them. lol
ReplyDeleteAnd yes, people are crazy. One time when we were visiting there was a huge male that used to stand around Old Faithful. Well this foreign tourist decided he wanted to get the bison's face which when he's eating is facing into the ground. So the man laid on his back in front of the bison to get photos of his face. Well the flash annoyed the bison and he killed the foolish man. It is a policy to euthanize an animal that kills a human, but everyone in the park was so outraged that the poor bison had to die because of the foolish man, that they protested and the rangers saved the bison and just moved him to another location. Thank you Lord.
Last month they had to euthanize a baby bison because some foreign tourists were driving and it was snowing and they thought the baby was freezing so they put it in their car. Well with human scent on it, the mother wouldn't touch it, so the rangers had to euthanize it. You might have seen that in the news.
so the animals are wonderful to see, but people need to remember they are WILD. And stay in their cars.
Forgot to answer your question Janet Yes, I've seen Rocky mountain sheep in Banff which is a Canadian national park and mountain goats in Nevada. Not a park though. They were on the side of the highway--about 20 of them. So exciting.
ReplyDeleteAnd thank you Janet for the ice cream to go with Patti Jo's peach cobbler. Boy am I going to feast. yippee
ReplyDeleteI love, love, love audio books! I always have one (on CD) in my vehicle and listen whether my drive is 5 minutes or 2 hours. I'm able to enjoy more books than my reading time allows, and I know I'd "quit" some books if reading them, but I'm able to enjoy them on audio. The narrator is SO important to the experience.
ReplyDeleteSandra
ReplyDeleteforgot to ask to put my name in the draw. I'm still trying to figure out some of the park pictures - because I know where I've seen them before, I'm just terrible with National Park names. It's the visual learner in me. Remember the picture but not the label. *sigh*
Hi Valerie How wonderful that you are able to listen to CD's. Like I've said, I enjoy books while traveling.
ReplyDeleteAnd you are so right. The narrator is key.
Happy listening.
Hi Deb Too funny. I remember visually also. Give me a name orally and I'm so lost. Well if you come close, that would be okay. No one else is attempting it except Myra knew one of them. smile
ReplyDeleteYour name is in the draw. smile
Love your photos, Sandra! You've seen so much of the Southwest and West! So glad you've shared the pictures with us today! Thanks for the tip about the park passes. Great info!
ReplyDeleteI've only listened to part of one book on tape. I was driving some distance and found my concentration turned to the story and off the road. I had to stop listening. But I like your idea of listening to a book while doing housework. In the old days of tapes, I would listen to the RWA tapes while cleaning house. Of course, now, I do as little cleaning as possible. That's probably the problem. :)
Sandra, are you an auditory learner?
ReplyDeleteI'm visual.
Happy birthday, Sandra!! And to our national parks!! Thank you, Teddy Roosevelt!
ReplyDeleteAudio books are dangerous...for me at least. When I was commuting every day to Nashville, I thought listening to an audio book would be a good use of my time. Not so much. You see, I got so involved in the story, I forgot I was driving and hit the gravel at the side of the road before I realized I was sailing off to Never, Neverland. Yikes!! And if I'm the passenger and my hubby is driving, he nods off. So...we haven't listened to a book since. Besides, I can read way faster than someone can talk. :)
I bought an iPod once...one of those that looked like a little black square...to listen to music. After reading the manual written in hieroglyphics, I finally took it back to Best Buy and got a refund. Sigh. Kindle is my best friend. I read at night in bed where I can't run over anything.
Oh SANDRA....I am SO sorry about your feral kitty Boo, and I am praying for his complete healing. It's sad to see a hurt kitty, and I'm glad your neighbor took him to the vet. ~ Two of the feral tomcats I feed daily got into a horrible fight in my backyard the other evening, so I went rushing out with my plant squirter/mister to break them up. I was calling loudly to them to stop fighting and be nice (yes, I'm sure my neighbors really do think I'm a crazy cat lady, LOL).
ReplyDeleteJANET, thanks for supplying the vanilla ice-cream for the cobbler! I'd forgotten that and the warm cobbler is tastier with the ice-cream. :)
Hugs, Patti Jo
Hi Debby I'm definitely NOT an auditory learner. More kinesthetic and visual. If someone tells me their name I forget it. But if I see it in writing or better yet, write it myself, I remember it forever. smile
ReplyDeleteYes, we have been blessed to see so much of God's creation. And the park passes are wonderful. I mostly listen while hubby drives. But listening also keeps me awake. So that is a plus.
Barbara You are tooooooo funny. Yes, if you nod off, it would be best to wait until you are tucked in bed to read. chuckle. I actually stay awake better in audio. I fall asleep whenever I sit down for any time to relax. In about five minutes I'm gone. So reading takes more time for me. Good thing God loves variety. smile
ReplyDeleteThanks for the prayers Patti Jo I'm laughing as I picture you in the yard with the squirt bottle. I can imagine what your neighbors say. I KNOW what mine say. LOL
ReplyDeletePatti Jo That cobbler hit the spot. Hubby is now wanting me to make one. LOL. I shouldn't have told him.
ReplyDelete:) I've got another good one, Sandra. True story. I used to walk on a treadmill, but it was soooooo boring and it made too much noise to listen to the TV or radio at the same time. My solution? Prop a book on the handlebars and read...only I got so involved in the book one time, I stopped walking and slammed into the closet door behind me. Boy, did my husband come running. He's never let me forget that one. lol
ReplyDeleteI am not an outdoors person. One rock looks like all the rocks.
ReplyDeleteA. Yellowstone
C Glacier National Park
G. Red Rock State Park, Sedona
And Valri, yes. The narrator is important. I will look for books by a particular narrator and avoid books spoken by other ones.
ReplyDeleteBarbara You must give a spew alert with these stories. I'm laughing so hard at the visual image you presented. But I'm sorry. That must have hurt. But that must have been a great author. smile. Guess you better stick to reading in bed. LOL
ReplyDeleteTina---WHAT? One rock looks like another? Oh no. My hubby is going to laugh. That is what his mother used to say about the trees. "One tree looks like another." Although I have to admit that in Yellowstone we were getting that same attitude about the bison. "One buffalo looks like another." Tooooooo funny.
ReplyDeleteA is Yellowstone.
That's a good idea Tina to avoid names as well as look for names of narrators. I heard one of Mary's books on audio and I wanted to strangle the narrator because she made the heroine sound like a little mousy girl. And you know Mary's characters are the opposite of mousy. LOL.
ReplyDeleteBeautiful pictures, SANDRA! I couldn't identify them, but would certainly like to visit some of these places someday. I've never listened to an audio book before, but I plan to look into it. Thanks for such an interesting post!
ReplyDeleteI haven't used Audible at all! Thanks for the info on park presentations. I'd love to get my kids to do some of this.
ReplyDeleteSANDRA!! HAPPY BIRTHDAY MONTH, MY SWEET FRIEND -- HOPE IT'S YOUR BEST EVER!!
ReplyDeleteMiss you, girlfriend, but know you are having a great time on the road with Hubs whenever you get the chance to travel, so that makes me smile!!
YOU SAID: "How many of you have said? “I saw the movie but the book was so much better.”
Waving hand here. I think the trick is to see the movie first, then it ends up being better than the book ... ;)
Actually, I have never listened to an audible, even my own book, A Love Surrendered, which I have several copies of, but have never listened to. Sad, I know. But I'm one of the few people who can actually read while in a car, so when Keith and I go on trips, there's no need for audio.
YOU SAID: "There is much more expression of emotion (when you're reading a book). When listening to a story it is very much like watching a movie. You are hearing the story in audible. You are seeing the story in a movie. Hearing and seeing are sensory intakes that can wrap up your emotions, but it is more difficult to do so.
Honestly, movies "move" me a lot, so based on your comment above, I'm guessing that audio books would too, so I really need to give them a try.
And it makes perfect sense that you can "listen to a story while doing mundane chores like laundry, dishes, housework, yard work, etc. (okay, I don’t do yard work, but some of you might. LOL)"
LOL, when I started writing, I gave up most gardening (I was such an anal gardener, that I had eleven berms in my yard and even came in 3rd place in a gardening contest once. But now that I live on a lake, I have a cute, little garden that's easy to care for, so I am in hog heaven!! Uh ... that is until the deer decimated my hostas and impatiens the other night. Sigh.
Hugs,
Julie
SANDRA, YOU SAID: "Speaking of iPods, how many of you have one? Have you seen them lately? They are the size of a credit card and slip right into your pocket so you can take it with you anywhere."
ReplyDeleteI have a realllllly old iPod that I listen to worship music on when I am on the treadmill, but I really should try an audio book, I know. :|
Finally, you asked: "Authors, have you considered putting your books on Audible? You might want to do so. I think that as our population ages, you will see more demand for them. And if yours is already out there, you have an advantage."
I'm inclined to agree, Sandra, but honestly, until I start listening to audios myself, I doubt I will want to put any of my books on them at this point. Down the road, when audio takes over the world?? Oh, you bet!!
Hugs,
Julie
Hi Laura, You would love these parks. They are all in the west. Hope you can get to them some day.
ReplyDeleteThanks for joining us. Happy reading and writing.
Hi Jessica Your kids would love the parks. Guaranteed. Hiking in all that beauty is just plain awesome and good exercise.
ReplyDeleteMaybe you should try audible sometime. I never though of it either until I had to proof mine. Then I realized how much I love it.
Hi Julie I'm so laughing at your garden. I sure do know about the deer. They eat EVERYTHING. I didn't know your book was in audible. I'll have to order it. I LOVE your books so I bet it is good. I had to listen to mine to proof it. They didn't make you proof yours?
ReplyDeleteJulie You are tooooooo funny. Trust me. You will love the new ipods. They are so handy and lightweight and small and easy to use.
ReplyDeleteWho knows. Audible may be growing in popularity as we speak. We are all getting older. LOL
So only a few ventured out with the parks. Please don't tell me you haven't been to these national parks. My, my, my. They are national treasures.
ReplyDeleteI'll give you a clue. If you follow me on Facebook , you will know where I have been. Although I have to admit, I'm a little behind on Facebook. Most of the parks don't have very good cell reception and only in the campground where everyone else is trying to upload photos also. So I had to wait until I was traveling through a town.
I'm actually slowly getting into it. It doesn't work when I'm commuting, because I get too caught up. So I only reserve the audiobooks during chores (and can't be while I'm cooking - total hazard!)
ReplyDeleteOh that is sooooo funny. I never though about a cooking disaster. Must have been a good book. Just commonly
ReplyDeleteCertainly don't drive if you are distracted. For some reason it helps me to stay awake so I like the experience.
Sandra, I haven't tried Audible. I use podcasts when I'm on the road, so I think I would enjoy Audible. It seems some of an audio book's success would depend on the narrator. When a publisher issues an audio book, does the author have any input regarding the narrator?
ReplyDeleteI'll give identifying the pix a try. Just don't laugh :-)
A Yellowstone
C Glacier
E Arches
F Big Bend (or maybe that's how the Grand Canyon looks from the north rim)
G Red Rocks Colorado
Thanks for the beautiful pix!
Nancy C
Please tell me what H is :-)
ReplyDeletewoohooo Nancy (Chill N) , Congrats. You are the only one who made an attempt at this. The parks aren't major parks, but you did pretty good. A is Yellowstone. E is Arches National Monument G is also in Arches National Monument Arches National Monument is in Utah.
ReplyDeleteYou're in for he drawing. smile
Nancy You would really like audible, especially if you are used to listening while on the road.
ReplyDeleteMost traditional publishers do not give the author a choice on the narrator. So the poor author has to pray they pick a great narrator.
When you self-publish or have the rights of your book, you can go on ACX on Amazon and they have on their webpage sample voices of all the narrators that work through them. It is really fun to go there and listen to all the different voices.
They even have types to pick from, like different accents, high pitched. Low pitched. Male or female, soft or strong, etc.
Okay here are the parks. We traveled straight north from Flagstaff, Arizona to Yellowstone. So on the way we stopped at Canyonlands National Park, Arches National Monument, Dinosaur National Monument, Teton National Park, and finally Yellowstone National Park.
ReplyDeleteThe animals in all fairness could be found almost anywhere in the west. But they are very predominant in Yellowstone. You are guaranteed to see the bison and elk there.
A = Yellowstone National Park (Wyoming)
B = Phelps Lake in Teton National Park (Wyoming)
C = Teton National Park
D = Bison and elk in Yellowstone National Park
E = Arches National Monument ( Landscape Arch) (Utah)
F = View of Colorado River and Green River Confluence from Canyonlands National Park (Utah)
G = Sandhill Arch in Arches National Monument
H = Dinosaur bones in Dinosaur National Monument (Utah and Colorado)
I = Synclines and Anticlines in Dinosaur National Monument
Last photo of hubby and I after hiking rim in Canyonlands National park. Behind us is the Green River
Thanks all of you for joining us today. I really enjoyed hearing your ideas for audio books. I hope more of you will try them. I think you will be pleasantly surprised. smile
ReplyDeleteThanks for the peach cobbler Patti Jo and the ice cream Janet
Hope you all have a wonderful summer. Visit those parks near you. You will enjoy them I'm sure.
Okay, Anyone know what is the number one visited park in the US?
Smoky Mountain National Park.
Sandra, I'm sorry I missed the day! We're in the midst of buying a home and packing to move. I won't see y'all around much for the next week or so!
ReplyDeleteI really enjoy audiobooks - if I can listen to the narrator. In the spring and summer I have a lot of plants to water outside...and then there is the pruning and weed removal ,etc. It helps pass the time.
ReplyDeleteI can see where audiobooks are more like movies than books. With audiobooks, you don't (easily) have the option to stop reading and re-read a passage or mull it over like with physical books or eBooks.
When I travel, depending on how long the trip is we like to listen to sermons on cd/ipod. It's so much easier to hear a sermon and not be distracted on a road trip. I've also found old radio shows and dramas (think Sherlock Holmes) to be good fun to break up trips.
The library is a great source for audiobooks! Also if your library offers the Freegal service, they have many of the classics - and you can download several tracks each week for keeps. :)
Patti Jo - thank you for that lovely cobbler. :) I'm siding with Sandra's husband on this one - I now want a peach cobbler for real!!! Lol.
Missy I sooooooo understand. We've moved a lot. My mother's strategy was to fix up one room. That way we always had a place to escape for sanity. We could take our time on the other rooms, but one room had to be finished right away. Usually the living room or the family room. It helps. smile
ReplyDeleteHi Megs sounds like you already know and love the audio world. I love those old radio shows. Hubby and I used to listen to them while traveling years ago before the world of audio.
ReplyDeleteThanks for mentioning the library also. They are always a great source.
I hope you enjoy that peach cobbler. I know hubby will love his.
Loved all the pictures, felt like I was on vacation with you :)
ReplyDeleteI love to take my audio books fishing.. I can listen and watch for
that occasional bite while enjoying the day.. I do get books from audible
and the library..I still have some audio books on cassette tape.. Toss me into that awesome giveaway please :)
Beautiful pictures. I loved the Tetons and Yellowstone, but haven't visited the other places. My husband and I really enjoy reading books together, so I've read several books aloud to him while he does something else. However, reading aloud for long periods of time is really hard on the voice and is also pretty tiring so we like to listen to audiobooks too. I like that the narrators can add accents and also generally know how to pronounce place names and French terms. I muddle through, but usually find if I listen to a book later that I've completely butchered the pronunciation of place names in the UK.
ReplyDeleteSANDRA SAID: "I didn't know your book was in audible. I'll have to order it. I LOVE your books so I bet it is good. I had to listen to mine to proof it. They didn't make you proof yours?"
ReplyDeleteNo, they didn't, but I didn't realize that they did that. And, girl, you don't have to order my lone audio book -- I'll give you one! Uh ... if I can find it in the piles of boxes still unpacked in our rental storage unit ... :| Let me know if you want me to look, okay, because I would be happy to send one.
Hugs,
Julie
"Happy Birthday", Sandra - and "Happy Birthday" to the National Park System!!
ReplyDeleteThanks for the beautiful pics - you're my kind of gal, lol!! I love traveling and seeing new places, visiting the U.S. National Parks I haven't seen would be such a joy. Enjoy your continued travels!!
I've never had an iPod - although I can't imagine enjoying listening to books as much as reading them, there are numerous advantages to using audio books. There are times when my eyes are just too tired to read, however, I might enjoy listening to them instead.
Please drop my name in the drawing for the iPod and your audio books - thank you so much!!
