When a Book Becomes a Hallmark Movie: 8 Things You Didn’t Know

When a Book Becomes a Hallmark Movie
8 Things You Didn’t Know
by Denise Hunter

Last spring I signed an option with a producer who wanted to make one of my books, The Convenient Groom, into a Hallmark movie. To say I was excited is an understatement. I tried to temper my enthusiasm. After all, a lot can happen between signing an option and the actual film debut. I’m friends with enough authors who’ve experienced the big letdown. I’d even experienced it once before myself. So I crossed my fingers, said a lot of prayers, and waited patiently. Okay, maybe not so patiently.

Then in March I was notified that filming on The Convenient Groom was soon to begin. The movie was really happening! As I began sharing the news I found that writers and readers alike are curious about the book-to-movie process. So I thought I’d share a few things I’ve learned along the way.

1.) I’m sure there are many ways producers “find” novels. In my case it was through my publisher. The rights department actively pitches their novels for film rights. As it happens, this particular production company had already optioned a couple of other books and made them into Hallmark movies, so there was already an established history between my publisher and the production company. Yay for me!

2.) Authors sometimes want to know how to write a book that appeals to production companies. If you watch Hallmark movies then you know most of the stories have compelling hooks. Here’s the hook for The Convenient Groom:

A celebrity relationship expert with a best-selling book about finding Mr. Right finds herself jilted just before her highly publicized wedding. In a panic she accepts the offer of a contractor—who secretly loves her—to step in as the groom in order to save her career.

If you’re aiming for Hallmark it also doesn’t hurt to utilize one of the popular romance tropes. They’re popular for a reason. The Convenient Groom is, of course, a modern day marriage of convenience story.

3.) Unless your name is Nicholas Sparks or Nora Roberts, an author probably can’t expect to have much, if any, input in the film itself. Film is a completely different medium than a novel, and sometimes what works well in print doesn’t work at all on the screen. Fortunately I knew this up front, and was quite happy to let the film people work their magic.

4.) Along those lines, I’m often asked if I wrote the screenplay for the movie. Just like novel writing, screenwriting is a craft that takes years to hone. I wouldn’t know the first thing about writing a screenplay, and since I want “my” movie to turn out great . . . well, I’ll just leave it in the experts’ hands.

5.) Many books are optioned for movies, but few of them actually get made. There are a lot of steps between the movie option and the film premier, not the least of which is funding. It’s exciting to have a book optioned for a film, but you can’t really count on the movie happening until filming is underway.

6.) Getting a book turned into a TV movie is a slow process. I signed the movie option in March of 2015, and The Convenient Groom will air June 18, 2016. That may seem to fairly quick to you, but for an author waiting for her book to come alive on screen, it’s excruciatingly slow. And I was sworn to secrecy until the very end. It was hard to keep my exciting news to myself.

7.) A TV movie is also a quick process. While the matters of funding, screenwriting, and hiring actors and crew can take months, the actual filming of the movie is FAST. A Hallmark movie takes only about 3 weeks to film! Amazing. The cast and crew put in some long hours!

8.) Most Hallmark movies are filmed in and around Vancouver, Canada. The vast diversity of Vancouver’s landscape make for a perfect movie set, whether the movie is “set” in Nantucket (like mine) or New York. But the main reason many movies and TV series are filmed there has to do with cost. Canadian labor laws are much friendlier to the pocketbook than are the United States’.

  1. Hi Denise:

Congrats on having a film made from your book. There are a lot of best selling authors who have not had movies made of their books.

    I have three questions:

Was "The Convenient Groom" Christian fiction or a secular book?

    Will Hallmark buy Christian fiction?

One of the first writing rules I ever read was:

Never make your heroine a romance writer. Doing so will remind the reader countless times a book that she is reading a romance. This is called 'alienation'. It would be like having ushers going up and down the aisles of a play in process with signs reading: "This is just a play."

I bet you're glad you did follow this rule.

    1. Hi Vince. Yes the Convenient Groom was a Christian novel. Hallmark likes wholesome stories, so Christian fiction falls right in line with that. On the rule about writing about a writer, I tend to ignore rules that start with always and never. LOL

Thanks for a glimpse into the book-to-movie process. I think there are a lot of misconceptions about how this happens.

  6. HOW EXCITING!

    Appreciate your sharing the process.

And I just adore the actress chosen to play your heroine. She's a fave!!

Congratulations. Looking forward to watching it come to life.

We purchased Second Hand Lions (film) and in the extras portion of the DVD, the author tells how his book *finally* saw another life as film. Different journey than yours to be sure, but some similarities. All fascinating.

    Wishing you many more successes!

    Thanks Julie, for sharing too!

  20. DENISE!!! WELCOME BACK TO ONE OF MY ALL-TIME-FIVE AUTHORS, GIRLFRIEND -- SO GREAT TO HAVE YOU HERE AGAIN!! AND SUPER CONGRATS ON THE HALLMARK MOVIE -- WOW, EVERY AUTHOR'S DREAM!!

The biggest question looming in my mind was HOW does one go about getting a Hallmark movie, and you answered that by saying in your case, it was your publisher who submitted it. We've all heard of a number of authors who came close -- I think Ruth Logan Herne did once -- so how did it happen for the authors you know who got the initial call? Did their publishers pursue it as well?

I read The Convenient Groom, and I gotta say that it's one of my absolute faves of your books, and that's saying something because I love them all!! And, WHOA, if ever there was a perfect Hallmark movie -- this is it! Cannot WAIT to see it, my friend!

    1. Thanks Julie! And thanks for having me on speaker Ville. The authors I know who've gotten a Hallmark movie have all gotten them through their publisher. I'm sure there are other ways, but they probably involve "knowing someone". Or knowing someone who knows someone. LOL I'm sure sometimes the producers find books by happenstance as they are reading, but I have no idea how often that happens.

You said you left the screenplay to the experts, but I've often heard that screenplay writers do spend a lot of time talking with authors, especially if the screenplay writer goes off script. Did that happen here? Did you get to asked to provide characters sketches or other information?

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. Hi Walt. No, I did not get asked for any information from the screenwriter. She worked with Hallmark and followed their guidance. She did write me when she was finished and made sure I had a copy of the script.

LOL ... virtual weight, my friend, where calories don't count, thank God!

YOU SAID: "I'm sure sometimes the producers find books by happenstance as they are reading, but I have no idea how often that happens."

Probably not a whole lot, I'm guessing. Hallmark producers probably have their hands full reading too many submissions to pick up another book and read for pleasure.

So, Denise, it sounds like you didn't have a lot of interaction with Hallmark regarding the making of the movie, or did you? Does the script follow your book exactly?

  33. DENISE, welcome back to Seekerville. I'm thrilled that The Convenient Groom will be a Hallmark movie! I ordered the novel and can't wait to watch. Do you know what time the movie airs on June 18?

Do you think contemporary novels are more apt to be sought for Hallmark movies? I haven't seen a historical. Cost of production may be a factor. It's sad to think authors of historical romance have little likelihood of seeing a book on the screen.

Are you doing anything to promote the TV movie? Does the number of viewers impact the possibility of another book being made into a TV movie?

    1. Hi Janet! Good to hear from you. The movie will be on the 18th at 9 o'clock eastern time.

Yes Hallmark seems to primarily be interested in contemporaries. They have a historical series, but I'm not aware of any movies that are historical.

I'm promoting the book/movie on social media and hosting a Facebook party on the 16th. I'm sure a record viewership would not hurt my chances at another movie. LOL

  34. MELISSA, just wanted to let you know that, yes, Hallmark does release movies to DVD. I have several I've purchased through Amazon, but you can probably do that from Hallmark's website, as well. I have several of the DVDs they've released, including the Christmas feel-goods and one of my all-time faves is The Magic of Ordinary Days (not a Christmas movie). I will say that I read TMOOD by Ann Howard Creel AFTER I saw the movie and it had some very notable differences. I liked the movie version better (which is rare for me), but I think it was because there were some elements in the book that were a little disconcerting and left me with a feeling of sorrow rather than joy.

As I said earlier, I'm looking so foward to Denise's The Convenient Groom! Can't wait to read it AND watch it! :) I wish Hallmark would consider the potential for more wonderful movies from books. Seems to me there is a huge market for uplifting stories. I know yearrrs ago, some Harlequin books were made into movies--I have a few of those, too. :)

  51. HUGE congrats, Denise, on having a book made into a Hallmark Movie. I think that's the ultimate for a romance writer - being on the Hallmark Channel. I'll have to check if we get that channel or not. Will definitely need to acquire the book to read. I've always thought the books are better than the films, btw. Converting words to pictures sometimes loses something during translation.

Having worked on a couple film sets (camera team) I have to say, those hours ARE long, but necessary. Still, it's loads of fun to watch things come together. I've been in the editing room too, watching which takes make the cut and which don't. I certainly hope the Hallmark people kept close to your vision. I've known times when films sort of go a bit too far with their creative license and stray from the author's vision.

This is SO COOL to see. Thanks so much for sharing your awesomeness with Seekerville. (hmmm, I think I meant awesome news - but awesome-ness sounds/fits better I think).

Congratulations!

  62. Ha! I love the things I do to words with my phone, Denise. I have chubby short fingers. LOL. It's hilarious. Some folks do their own graphics from their phone. Unbelievable finger talent.

Hey, I like Speaker Ville. It fits us. As long as you don't call us Villians. ha!!

  63. Hi Denise! I really enjoyed reading The Convenient Groom, and I'm intrigued to see what Hallmark has done with it.

Thanks for sharing a copy with us! I'd love to win for my sister - she's been bouncing off the walls in excitement since she found out about this movie. To say she likes your books might be the biggest understatement I've ever made. ;)

    Julie, thanks for hosting Denise!

  64. Congratulations, Denise! Having a book made into a movie is the equivalent of catching lightning in a bottle. I've written screenplays and even gotten notes from a couple of producers, but that doesn't guarantee success. I'm so happy for you! And now I'm going online to buy The Convenient Groom. :-)

  65. We're all so happy for you! It's exciting to see Christian fiction represented on film/tv. I'm interested to see how much of the inspirational theme makes it in the movie. I'll be sure to read the book beforehand! Several of your books are on my summer reading list since I tend to enjoy contemporary romance more in the heat- I don't know why that is! ;)

    1. Hi Heidi! Since the whole story is an allegory about Christ's love for us, I think the spiritual application will be present for those who want to see it.

  68. This movie is the one and only reason I'm a teeny bit disappointed that we cancelled our Dish subscription. Hubby has been watching Netflix and Roku but I just have more reading time! I'm thrilled for you, Denise. I love The Goodbye Bride and look forward to reading more of your titles!

  70. Thanks Tina, can't do the hallmark channel since I have no tv service, but the feeln thing might work. But then, maybe I'll just try to get my library to buy it, moving to the big city and I've gotten them to purchase two things so far!

  71. Congrats, Denise! My family (and my especially my dad, surprisingly) are Hallmark Movie addicts and I've always thought that they should take a look at more Christian fiction to turn into tv films. I know several they've adapted several Karen Kingsbury novels, along with Janette Oke and Beverly Lewis novels, so it's nice to see contemporary fiction authors included as well.

Thanks for the chance to win A Convenient Groom! It sounds pretty unique!

I haven't read this book of yours, but is sounds like so much fun. And I really like David Sutcliffe, so it looks like I have a date with my TV on June 18!

Have a great day, and blessings that the movie is all you hope it will be!

  84. Our dollar is also generally lower up here in Canada with helps with costs. (When we ran par or above the US dollar we didn't have as much business from Hollywood. :)) Even in Alberta we get a few movies made...and it's pretty fun to be an extra! :) I'm very excited for your book/movie!
