We've had queries on Woman's World Magazine, so here's a repeat of the information presented in February. Big News at Woman's World Magazine. Fiction editor, Johnene Granger, has retired after 16 years of reading our fiction and mystery submissions. Patricia Gaddis has taken over and there is no second reader. As always Patricia sends all stories on to the Executive Editor for final approval. More news: submissions are electronic as are contracts. If you submit via snail mail, your submission will still be read. Save trees, time and stamps and consider submitting electronically. For authors who have sold to WW in the past, send your submission to FictionPro@WomansWorldMag.com - for authors who have not sold to WW yet, submit to Fiction@WomansWorldMag.com
Still pays $800 for an 800 word, short romance. If you do not hear back in four months, re: print or email submission, you can consider that your story has not been accepted. More good news. Patricia Gaddis is now a member of the Woman's World Yahoo Loop and available to answer your questions. So do consider joining. Send an email to wwwriters-subscribe@yahoogroups.com No changes to word count or payment has been mentioned.

Seekerville is delighted to welcome our October Contest Diva, Sharee Stover.Taking the first step in sharing my manuscript was a pivotal point in this writing journey. It was the personal reckoning of whether I actually believed I could maybe—just maybe—be a real-life writer. As author/speaker Jen Hatmaker puts it, “it’s like standing naked in front of a group of people.”
The great thing about having a writing community is the encouragement it provides. I’d see folks on Seekerville talk about their contest experiences and it helped to know others understood the angst.
I decided if nothing else, the feedback was worth the entry fee. I desperately wanted the feedback. Needed the feedback. Feared the feedback.
Kids are great for throwing your words back at you and mine were no exception. They reminded me how I’ve repeatedly told them to step out in faith to grow. It was time to show and not tell.
I had two stories that I needed to test the waters with, so in 2015, I took a deep breath and hit send diving into the pool with the ACFW First Impressions Contest. The feedback I got was encouraging and painful but all of it helped me to see where I needed to make adjustments to the story. Back to the drawing board.
Shortly thereafter, I discovered the ACFW The End Contest. The only requirement was a completed manuscript written in 2015. I’d done that, so I entered and was thrilled when I won it! The prize package helped me to attend the conference this past August!
In February this year, I entered the Writer’s Digest Lucky Agent Contest. It was free so there was no reason not to enter. Unfortunately, I didn’t win or place in it. But the work to submit helped complete my tagline.
In March, I entered the ACFW Genesis with my first manuscript and although I didn’t place, it was a good reality check for where that particular story was and the work that needed to be done to it.
I entered the RWA Kiss of Death, Daphne Du Maurier with another story I’d completed, thinking there was no way I had a shot at this one. You can imagine my surprise when the phone rang and I found out I was a finalist. I couldn’t attend the award ceremony so I watched via live feed and just when they announced my category, the internet died. Are you kidding me? By the time it recovered, the announcement was over and I wasn’t the winner, but I did receive an Honorable Mention and a really great prize. This past August, I pitched the story from the Daphne Du Maurier and received requests for proposals from several agents.
Devoting money, time, and a few tears for feedback to gauge your writing is invaluable. Whether you win or not, it’s a step of faith to share your story with the outside world and you might even get a reward for doing it.
Take a deep breath and dive into the contest pool! It’s worth the risk.
Sharee Stover makes her home in northeastern Nebraska with her longsuffering husband who is willing to eat pizza during the entire month of NaNoWriMo and listen to brainstorming story ideas ad nauseam. Her three amazingly wonderful children who understand the phrase “I just need a few more minutes to finish this scene,” which actually means an hour or more. And three needy and lovable dogs who insist on being let out every hour, on the hour to chase whatever squirrel, turkey or rabbit might dare to invade their yard. In between parenting college, high school and elementary aged children, attending high school sporting events, and walking an obnoxiously lovable German Shepherd, she writes romantic suspense stories.
That's it. Have a cupcake and then go forth and contest!
Today's Contest Update was brought to you by Tina Radcliffe. Tina writes humorous, sweet and inspirational romance from her home in Arizona. She is a Carol Award winner for Mending the Doctor's Heart, as well as a 2016 Holt Medallion finalist, a 2016 Greater Detroit RWA’s Booksellers’ Best Book Award finalist and a NERFA finalist for Safe in the Fireman's Arms. The fourth book in the Paradise series, Rocky Mountain Reunion is currently available. Rocky Mountain Cowboy will be available in December. She is a comma abuser.
Happy Birthday, Seekerville!

I smiled when I read Sharee's post. I can relate to "I'm almost done writing this scene." My older kids now approach me with "Are you on a roll?" before they ask me anything. Thanks for the encouragement Sharee and congratulations on your growing success!
Writing my first novel has definitely been a call to adventure!

I am right now polishing the crown for our Diva, Sharee.
Happy Birthday Seekerville! It's so cool that for YOUR birthday, WE get the prizes--how awesome is that? Well, I'm not too shy to hold out my hand for prizes--throw me into the kitty dish!
ReplyDeleteVicki
Happy Birthday! Sharee, what a journey and thank you for sharing it. You speak for a lot of us. It's tought to get out there, but so worth it.
ReplyDeleteI'm doing First Impressions this month and may be able to squeeze out a couple others before the end of the year.
Oh this is funny...At the last minute I decided to enter two MS in Phoenix Rattler. One is the Oregon Trail piece that I've been circulating for a while and that got two "firsts" last year. The other one? It's been gathering figurative dust on my computer, but I dragged it out, updated it with what I've learned here and from my crit partner, and threw it into the mix. Oregon Trail didn't go anywhere (figuratively, I mean. In the contest. OF COURSE the actual trail went somewhere.) But the older piece finaled. I love irony, don't you? So I'll be polishing that for the rest of October, along with reading Sandy's devotional series which I traditionally do in October. I'm on vac this week so may be on here more often, yay. Enter me in whatever you're giving away...My vacation reads are the ones I won by Myra and Candee Fick, so it's all good.
Kathy Bailey
Savoring the irony in New Hampshire
Happy Birthday, Seekerville!!!!

Happy Birthday, Seekerville!

Contest news? No contests for me this month. I'm doing all I can to meet my Nov. 1st deadline. NaNoWriMo has nothing on what my October looks like...

TRACEY HAGWOOD, I tell myself I can give up coffee before summer (of course I don’t)…then in the fall I do it again. But the cool weather and delightfully wonderful baking season approaches and…I just have to walk the dog more so I can indulge.
OOOOOH (waving hand in the air emphatically) TINA, can I wear a crown today? I loved Tracey’s words…reigning in October!

ReplyDeleteHappy Birthday!
Nancy C
Happy Birthday, Seekerville. I "stumbled"onto this website in 2012...been lurking or blogging sporadically ever since. This group of encouragers has launched many careers and the Seekers commitment to their group of fledgling writers is truly a God inspired calling! My small band of writers, the three of us have been texting encouraging words for each baby step taken in writing this week. This is a powerful accountability! I have just printed my novel and will work on completing this month as I celebrate the "birthday" with you.
ReplyDeleteTina, fall is the beautiful time of year where crisp mornings give way to warm days and then chilly nights. No more lawn mowing; no more air-conditioner.
ReplyDeleteI'm making an apple strudel as we speak :)
Do cacti change color??
Congrats on your success Sharee, from a fellow Nebraskan!
ReplyDeleteSo excited that it is time for the Seekerville birthday month again. This is my third year for it. So much fun!
Not yet ready to enter one of these contests but getting closer. On the other hand, I have been more diligent with sending short stories. I currently have three out and hope to get a Woman's World submission ready soon.
No, cactus bloom, however. Which is pretty amazing.
ReplyDeleteI am drinking hot coffee again, so there is some change in the air.
I do miss autumn in Colorado.

NANCY C. – I can spend an entire day working on a scene, for the love of sam! You’ll have to let us know what CAT stories you come up with! I always have a dog in mine...if my GSD wouldn't try to eat it, we'd love to have a cat.

Happy Birthday Seekerville!!! Let the celebration begin.
ReplyDeleteAnd congrats Diva Sharee for braving contests. :)
December seems like a long way off Tina. Rocky Mountain Cowboy can't come out soon enough for me!
ReplyDeleteI'll enter First Impressions - maybe. I think I need a pep talk.
HAPPY BIRTHDAY, SEEKERVILLE!!! Can hardly believe we're starting our 9th year -- WOW!!! And what a blessing it has been, not only the fabulous friendships with twelve of the coolest women I have ever know, but the extension of those friendships into a blog where even more wonderful friendships have been forged. We are blessed in Seekerville, and I thank God for each and every blessing that has come our way and those yet to come!
ReplyDeleteJEANNE SAID: "I'm with Cate. I LOVE that this year's birthday celebration starts off with a Contest Update! It's because of you ladies that I ever got brave enough to enter a contest. And that's been a good, good thing."
I have to admit, I was a wee bit surprised Day One of our birthday month was going to be a Contest Update, but Jeanne's brilliant comment made me realize it is the perfect kickoff to our tenth year since it was contests that brought all of the Seekers together in the first place to create Seekerville, so WOW!!! You sure nailed it, Jeanne!
TRIXI, I am sooooo jealous of you, girl -- I LOVE San Francisco!! You guys have a great time!!
TRACEY, I KILL for Caramel Macchiato coffee!! Unfortunately I can't find it in decaf anymore, which I LOVED, so now I drink the regular Caramel Macchiato and poor Keith suffers the rest of the day. We're talkin' a true CDQ!! Oh, well. We just celebrated our 48th anniversary Thursday, so if he's still around, that's a good thing, right? ;)
Hugs and HAPPY WEEKEND, all!!
Julie
Cindy, I think you need to enter more than First Impressions. That's for folks just starting out. No editor or agent judges.
ReplyDeleteYou need to enter Joyce Henderson and the Emma Merritt!!! ABSOLUTELY!!!!
Yay!!! It's party-time in Seekerville. Going to be a blast!
ReplyDeleteSHAREE!!!!!
ReplyDeleteI figured you needed a comment all your own, darlin', because you ROCK!! Sooooo proud of all you have accomplished, especially winning the THE END contest -- that's AWESOME, both that win AND the fact that you got to go to ACFW this year AND I got to meet you!! And by the way, girlfriend, my son and family are moving to Omaha next year, so you know what that means, don't you??? LUNCH WITH MARY AND ME AND THRILL RIDES DOWN ONE-WAY STREETS THE WRONG WAY!! (Inside joke with Ms. Connealy, but don't ever get in a car with her is all I'm saying ... ;)
YOU SAID: "I desperately wanted the feedback. Needed the feedback. Feared the feedback."
LOVE the alliteration, my friend, which clearly demonstrates your excellent writing ability!
YOU ALSO SAID: "You can imagine my surprise when the phone rang and I found out I was a finalist. I couldn’t attend the award ceremony so I watched via live feed and just when they announced my category, the internet died. Are you kidding me? By the time it recovered, the announcement was over and I wasn’t the winner, but I did receive an Honorable Mention and a really great prize. This past August, I pitched the story from the Daphne Du Maurier and received requests for proposals from several agents."
OH. MY. GOSH!!! Can hardly believe that happened to you -- YIKES!! And SUPER CONGRATS on the requests for proposals from several agents -- THAT'S HUGE!! Saying a prayer right now that you get the right one.
And why do I have the strong feeling that you will be published by our tenth Seekerville birthday???? PRAYING!!!
Hugs,
Julie
(Inside joke with Ms. Connealy, but don't ever get in a car with her is all I'm saying ... ;)
ReplyDelete(I'd like to second this and I was not present at the above insider joke incident!)
If you want to see God and his angels in action, follow Mary around in her car for a day.
TRACEY!!! Our first review for Cowboy Christmas Homecoming -- WHOO-HOO!!!! Thank you SO much for the great review, and I am thrilled you enjoyed it. Gilead is such a class act and great people to write for, so this has been a real blessing.
ReplyDeleteMYRA SAID: "Wow, is it really nearly RITA/GH time again???" I feel exactly the same way, Myra -- it's like WHOOOOOOOOOOOSH, and another year has flown by!
And, TINA, I was soooo excited about the birthday celebration that I forgot to commend you on yet another WE -- EXCELLENT JOB as usual!!
KATHY BAILY!!! Super congrats on your RATTLER CONTEST final -- you go, girl!!
HUGS,
Julie
Happy,happy birthday,Seekerville!!!!!!

ReplyDeletep.s. what an idiot I am lol . . . happy 9th, instead of happy 6th. I am really sorry for the mistake there.

ReplyDeleteTHERESA – Thank you for commenting and cheering you forward on First Impressions!
ReplyDeleteHi MEGAN BESSING! Thanks for being here today.
CINDY REGNIER – You’ve come to the right place for a contest pep talk!
Hi JULIE! Waving emphatically!!!
ReplyDeleteI’m telling ya, every nervous, terrified moment of contest entering is totally worth it when it means hanging with you and the Seekerville Ladies in person. Life doesn’t get better than that! Okay, maybe a contract or two…or ten…and an agent…I got big dreams!
I’m happy dancing all over the place! Woowhoo!!! So excited you’ll be visiting us!!! Oh my goodness, can we get into trouble…er…I mean can we have FUN or what?!
TINA, I can attest to being in the car when MARY’S driving. I choose to sit in the backseat, where I can’t see anything happening or have to be a witness before a judge. Giggle.
If I am published by the tenth birthday the cake is on me!! Keep those prayers coming!
Hi WALT! Seekerville throws the best parties!
ReplyDeleteCHARLOTTE – Welcome!
JANET – Cheering for you in the RITA!
KELI – Thank you!!! So glad you stopped in! Grab a cupcake.
SPLASH – 9 is a wonderful age! Ah, to be young again.
REBECCA – Thanks for coming by!
JUST COMMONLY – TINA just keeps upping the ante doesn’t she? She’s awesome!
VIRGINIA – Greetings!! So glad you could make it.
Whew! Coming up for air as I race toward yet another deadline! Looks like you've gathered another great bundle of contest opportunities, TINA!
ReplyDeleteCongrats, SHAREE on your Contest "Diva-ship"! Very well deserved. Those of us who've been where you are--stepping out into those seemingly shark-infested contest waters--understand the courage it took to jump in--and to KEEP jumping in. Again and again and again. (I groaned when I read that your internet went out just as they came to announcing the winner of your category. Aaaah!) Congratulations--you're well on your way and your journey is one that will encourage so many others who are considering testing the contest waters. We hope to hear in the not-too-distant future that you've sailed off unpubbed island!
HAPPY BIRTHDAY, SEEKERVILLE--we have all of you Villagers to thank for us making it this far!
DEBBIE RHOADES – Amen and Amen!
ReplyDeleteDEBBIE CLATTERBUCK – Thanks for hanging with us.
KELLY O – Not only do we get super writing tips, advice and help…we get presents! Seekerville rocks!
Hi BECKY. We can cheer together!
STARLIGHT STARBRIGHT – No matter when you come by, there’s great things happening here.
GLYNNA – Shark invested is so right but that’s what builds tough skin, yes? At least that’s what I’m told…haven’t actually acquired it. However, I do have whining down to a fine art.
Happy Birthday, Seekerville! So excited about the month ahead! Woot!
ReplyDeleteReaching for a slice of birthday cake...and a party hat!
Thanks, Tina, for a wonderful contest update! Diva Sharee, so proud of all you've accomplished!!! Woo-hoo!!!
I'm at GRW's Moonlight & Magnolias Conference spreading the word about our amazing birthday party! Waving to all the M&M folks who stop by the blog. Getting ready for the awards ceremony. Ruthy and Kristi Hunter are up for a Maggie! Tonya Agler is up for the Unpublished Maggie. I'm cheering for all these wonderful ladies! Good luck, everyone!
happy happy 9th birthday and I just found out about this place, yikes. Thanks for the cupcake and visit.
ReplyDeleteHAPPY BIRTHDAY dear Seekerville and all my beloved Seekers!! Love you all :)
ReplyDeleteHappy Birthday, Seekerville! Congratulations! Good luck to all the authors who enter contests this month! I hope you all do well.
ReplyDeleteThanks, Tina, for a great contest update! You did a great job!
My husband and I are on our "bucket list" vacation now - going on a fall foliage tour in New England. We are having an awesome time! Since we are from Oregon, it's fantastic to see a new part of the country! I hope everyone has a fabulous October!!!!
With a name like Starlight Starbright, you should stop by all the time!!!!
ReplyDeleteGood to see Miz Carrie!
ReplyDeleteHi Robyn L!
Hi there, Valri!!
ReplyDeleteHappy Saturday!!!
Happy Birthday, Seekerville. I have been following Seekerville for two years. I LOVE how valuable all the information is. Thank you for all you do! Here's to many more!!
ReplyDeleteA big congratulations to the Phoenix Rattler Finalists!
ReplyDeleteSHAREE, I had to come back this evening to read your DIVA story. Wow! You are a DIVA indeed. Congratulations to you!
“it’s like standing naked in front of a group of people.”
ReplyDeleteSo THAT's where that dream comes from... the mind of a terrified writer. Well, NOW we know!
Sharee, I can relate to the dog-walking, dog-sitting problem. I'm sitting my "grand dog" this weekend, my son and DIL's Boston Terrier. Odie's used to being contained to their yard, but here, he can go "hog" wild. And he does!!!
ReplyDeleteThis morning when I let him out, I didn't see him for about an hour. Talk about SWEATING!!! It's not that he's far away, it's just that we have woods and pastures all around and I can't SEE him, so I worry. He's my DIL's baby and I worry that something will happen. Thursday night I took him with me to my parents, and he took off about 10 that night when I got ready to leave. I thought I was going to have to spend the night. Thankfully, he came back about 15 minutes later.
Thankfully, I live 1/2 mile from a public road, but still.... he worries me.
CHARLOTTE!! I am sooooooo glad you connected with Seekerville, my friend, because it's sooooooo great to have you here!!
ReplyDeleteTINA!!! But I keep you on your toes, you have to admit, even if I'm not on mine ... ;)
TINA SAID ABOUT MARY'S DRIVING: "If you want to see God and his angels in action, follow Mary around in her car for a day"
SHAREE SAID ABOUT MARY'S DRIVING: "I can attest to being in the car when MARY’S driving. I choose to sit in the backseat, where I can’t see anything happening or have to be a witness before a judge. Giggle."
Oh, THANK GOD, it's not just me -- I thought Mary might have a vendetta against me, driving down not one, but TWO one-way streets the wrong way. But I have to admit something my hubby always says about me: "Life with Mary is NEVER boring"!! ;)
Hugs,
Julie
KAYBEE!!!! Congrats on finaling in the Rattler contest! :)
ReplyDeleteWell done, Tina :)
ReplyDeleteCongratulations to all the authors!
Please enter me in the reader drawings. I don't know how long I've been a Seekerville fan here but only consistently for about a year. However, I think I've been reading some of your books from the start :)
May God bless all of Seekerville!
Speaking of indulging...
ReplyDeleteI just made a sugar-free, gluten-free Lemon Sour Cream Pie WITH homemade sugar-free whipped cream to dollop on top. It's chilling in the fridge as we speak.
Gather round for lemon pie and coffee! There's plenty for everyone! :)
Diva Sharee...
ReplyDeleteReminds me of Stevie Wonder's song... Ma Cherie Amour ... :)
I'd love to be entered in the reader drawings!
ReplyDeleteWow, reading about all the contests in overwhelming. You guys do great work! Keep it up!
Happy birthday Seekerville! I believe I first visited Seekerville about a year ago. It has been such a delight getting to know many of you here on the Internet as well as meeting some of you face to face! Thank you for sharing your hearts here and in your books. Love and hugs to you all!
ReplyDeleteHappy birthday Seekerville! I believe I first visited Seekerville about a year ago. It has been such a delight getting to know many of you here on the Internet as well as meeting some of you face to face! Thank you for sharing your hearts here and in your books. Love and hugs to you all!
ReplyDeleteDEBBY!!! So glad you’re here! Can’t wait to hear about Ruth and Kristi Hunter’s win!!! Tonya Agler too!!
ReplyDeleteROBYNL – welcome!! You’re never too late for the party!
CARRIE – Celebrating with you.
VALRI – I’m super impressed you stopped in when you’re in such a beautiful place vacationing!
KELLY – Thanks for stopping by.
JILL – That made my night! Thanks!!
JULIE – MARY does make life wonderful!!!
PHYLLIS – these ladies are such fantastic authors!
KATY C – Grab some dessert!
PAM – Right?! Eegads it’s wonderful scary to be naked…symbolically.
ReplyDeleteMy dogs would love all that freedom! We take ours to an open area and walk them off leash. They love it!
The pie sounds soooooo good. I’m ready. Holding my fork. Let’s do this.
Oh yes…cannot tell you how many renditions of that song I’ve heard in my life.
You all have been so gracious and delightful. Thank you for letting me hang out with you all today. It’s been soooooooo groovy! I’ve loved every minute of it.
ReplyDeleteMs. TINA, you've got me wanting to dive into the contest pool again!!
HAPPY BIRTHDAY SEEKERVILLE!!!!!
ReplyDeleteand huge congrats to super DIVA Sharee. LOVE your story!!!
I found Seekerville via Anita Mae Draper in 2008 - just after getting married 08-08-08. Of course I lurked the first year because the knowledge here intimidated me a bit, but then Mary and Ruthy teasing each other in the comments helped me un-lurk (about the time my little boy was born - OCTOBER BABY).
So October is an awesome birthday month because I share my birthday, my son's birthday and Seekerville's birthday this month. I'm thinkin' how cool is that??? And I also think it is DIVINE providence that the tenth year starts off with a contest update (which is fantabulous as always TINA - you rock!) That speculative fiction imprint for Kensingtion Publishing piques my interest.
No contests for me. I need to actually WRITE for a change. Chasing a six -almost seven year old has put a severe dent in writing time. I still have no clue how women with more than one child actually get anything done.*sigh*
Put me in for chocolate. One can NEVER have enough chocolate.
YAYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYY SEEKERVILLE. Happy Birthday and may the Lord continue to bless you Ladies multi-times more than the blessings you've been to us Villagers.
Just sayin...
Yay! Happy Birthday, Seekerville! :) I can't wait to visit and see what each of the authors have planned. Congrats, Seekerville!
ReplyDeleteCongratulations Sharee!
ReplyDeleteWhat a great way to celebrate. I LOVE Seekerville birthday month!
I've been gone all day and am just now checking in! So many good contests out there. I'd love to enter one, or several, contests, but I really shouldn't until I get my wip completed.
Happy, happy birthday, Seekerville!! I have learned SO much from this awesome website. And every time I pop in, I find so much more to think about, like Julie's post yesterday! Every new author should read that post... every morning. LOL
ReplyDeleteHappy Birthday, Seekerville!!!
ReplyDeleteThank you for such a terrific blog!
Wishing you all continued success!
God Bless
Thank you, to Sharee and to all the Villagers who stopped by today.
ReplyDeleteYes. Time to enter a few more contests people. Keep the dream moving forward.
No guts. No glory.
Congrats to all the winners and finalists this week! Happy birthday, Seekerville. You do so much for us, we should be giving you gifts.

ReplyDeleteMARY JANE/VIRGINIA SAID: "And every time I pop in, I find so much more to think about, like Julie's post yesterday! Every new author should read that post... every morning. LOL"
ReplyDeleteLOL ... thanks, my friend, and I agree. I think I need to read it every morning ... ;)
MARY SAID: "HEY JULIE YOU LIVED DIDN'T YOU???????? (whiner)"
HA! Just barely ... ;) And you're right that I haven't spent enough time with you, my friend, but I plan to remedy that after my kids move to Omaha, I promise!
Hugs,
Julie
Wow another birthday to celebrate. What a blessing to be in Seekerville.

Oops. I forgot to congratulate the winners in past contests. Enjoy the ride. I am on vacation and staring at one of God's great creations, the Atlantic Ocean in Daytona. Simply mesmerizing in beauty. I hope to write some on the balcony with this tremendous view. Have a wonderful Sunday all.

ReplyDeleteThank you for your work on this lesson, Sharee. You did a great job of prompting me to remember the importance of contests--feedback, visibility, and building confidence. And congratulations to Seekerville on our birthday. Woohoo!!! Blessings to you all.
ReplyDeleteGreat job, Sharee! I love the line about sharing your writing being like standing in front of others naked. Painfully true and made me laugh our loud, literally!
ReplyDeleteHappy 9th Bday, Seekerville! Thank you all for the encouragement, wisdom and knowledge you share here! But mostly for showing all of us how to "pay if forward!"
Love you all!
Happy 9th Birthday🎉🎂🎁🎊
