Ruthy here! Carrie Fancett Pagels is in the house today, a delightful woman and author with so much to offer! She's dogged, determined and dedicated to a job well done. Carrie, welcome back to Seekerville!
About a year ago, I felt the Lord
prompting me to do more in-person promo, e.g., more book signings. Those who’ve
read my previous posts on Seekerville know I’m really big on seeking God’s will
and being obedient to that direction from Him! I felt this tug in my spirit toward
doing an old fashioned intense promo of my novel My Heart Belongs on Mackinac Island: Maude’s Mooring. I’d been
advised by Jeanne Wynn of Wynn-Wynn Promotions (http://wynnwynnmedia.com) to put my promo emphasis on this release, my only
full-length novel this past year. So, I’d set up a number of online promos and then
looked for opportunities to do promo on location. In the summer of 2016 my
family came with me up to Northern Michigan ( grew up in the Upper Peninsula) where
I did more personal appearances.
Shoreline, Mackinac Island |
I did a book signing at the Tahquamenon
Logging Museum (my second appearance there) and also spoke at the library in
St. Ignace Michigan. I also made personal contacts. I visited with Cheboygan
library and at the Mackinac Island library to see if there might be some
opportunities there to donate my books (there were!) and to possible speak
(we’ll still see). I also went up to the Grand Hotel and spoke with one of the
store managers about doing a book signing in 2017.
Grand Hotel |
So, actual preparation for
my month-long trip in July 2017 actually began a year before! However, there
was a cost to me, and my family, not only financially but in the energy it took
for me to accomplish all I did during the 2016 trip. Still, I believed God was
moving me to return the next year.
Book signing Grand Hotel |
In January 2017, I prayed about what
to do. I felt with my Rheumatoid Arthritis I could not do another promo where I
had two events in a week like in 2016 (plus up there one must travel a far
distance between towns). I’d begun lining up possible events for July 2017 and
was feeling blessed to have The Island Bookstore agree to host me and for the
Grand Hotel to have me, too (a dream come true!).
And Susan James, the
wonderful head librarian at the Sault Ste. Marie Bayliss Public Library, agreed
to have me come speak. Susan had helped me with the map for 1895 Sault Ste.
Marie, Michigan, the previous year and I was really looking forward to meeting
her in person. The Tahquamenon Logging Museum http://tahquamenonloggingmuseum.org also wanted me to come back. I’m a supporter of the
Logging Museum and my great-grandparents’ cabin, where my grandmother grew up,
is located on the premises. For someone
like Beverly Lewis, who did several book signings a day while in Virginia
recently, this would all be a walk in the park. But for me, not-so-much.
Also, I needed to do some more
research while I was up on Mackinac Island and in Northern Michigan. That meant
a certain amount of energy and travel as most towns have a fair distance
between them, especially in the Upper Peninsula. I found a rental that I’d
considered the previous year, but which had no air conditioning (you don’t need
it much up there but when you do. . .) and this year for the 2017 season the
cottage had an AC unit. Great! But the minimum stay was a month! Sitting there,
in my living room, praying about what to do, I had a peace that I should go. My
husband is a supervising engineer for a large shipbuilding company and had a
huge project going. I asked him if he could do a month. He of course reminded
me it would be two days up and back as well and was I crazy? No, I was dead serious! I worked it out so that he’d go the middle
two weeks of the trip. Later, we finally both compromised and he came the full
trip but we stayed two and a half
days less on our trip.
I realize a prolonged on-site promo
is not possible for most people. That prolonged trip for you, particularly if
you’re in good health, might only be a week or so. It could have been that way
for me, too, before I became disabled from this illness, so keep that in mind
when reading my article. However, sometimes, time itself is what’s needed to
add some important connections or activities.
Some things that happened that
wouldn’t have if I’d been there a week: The first time I stopped by The Island
Bookstore http://www.islandbookstore.com to drop off
bookmarks and to sign a few books, before my actual scheduled book signing, I
ended up sitting down and I signed two books in the five or ten minutes I was
there. I came back after lunch and we sold another six in the time I was there.
And I ended up signing a couple of cases of books for the store. Totally unplanned.
Book signing at Island Book Store |
But an advantage of
being in the area. Fast forward to the day of the book signing. We were
fortunate to have rain! Which brought a lot of book readers into the store. The
guests were all really nice people, which was such a blessing. And I was asked
to sign another bunch of cases of books, which were selling well at the store PTL!
After signing a couple of cases I had an inspiration – heck, I was staying in
Mackinaw City, which was just a ferry ride away. This was the point of us staying
up North so long. I asked – “What about another book signing the following week?”
Sure thing! So, I came back and had a
third book signing there and signed the rest of the cases of books. A huge
blessing. All possible because of doing an on-site extended promo.
Because we were there for an
extended time, I had the ability to sit down in the Mackinac Island history
reference room and spend an entire morning just looking through all the amazing
books they have, which one can’t get their hands on elsewhere. I also was able
to get tons of pictures to use to go with blog posts, like this one, which I
can also use for my Spring 2018 release “His Anchor” in First Love Forever Collection from Barbour. I also was finally able
to get a time when both the director of the Cheboygan Opera House and I could
finally get together for a private tour. It was wonderful! I had the privilege
of hearing the amazing Bob Tagatz speak again at the Grand Hotel, too! I missed
out on a couple of hoped-for research trips while I was up there but that
always leaves next year for more!
Question: How about you? Have you ever felt the Lord leading
you to do an extended on-location promotion of your work? If you’re a reader,
have you ever met an author while they were on such a tour?

Carrie, you are amazing! I knew you took a trip to Mackinac Island by following your posts on FB, but didn't realize it was a whole month for promos...wow! What an opportunity God opened up to you :-) I'm sure you were a blessing wherever you went. I've never met an author, but really hope to someday!
ReplyDeleteI have a copy of My Heart Belongs in Mackinac Island, but I'd love to be in the draw for any of the Barbor collections mentioned. Thanks so much and for sharing your many recent adventures.
Trixi, keep the thought of CFRR2018 in your prayers. I think it's in Nashville in September next year, so it's something to think about. A devoted reader like you would love, love, love the experience and we authors love meeting folks face to face!!!
DeleteHi Trixi! Yes I really was up there a whole month doing promo and tried to share my pics on Facebook every night! Would love to meet you sometime!
DeleteYes, Trixi - you would love the Christian Fiction Readers Retreat! Just imagine an entire room full of authors who are as excited to meet you as you are to meet them!
DeleteEver since the birth of CFRR two years ago, I've wanted so badly to attend!! I wish cost wasn't an issue. I live on the West coast and it's expensive to fly, plus the airport is two hours away! But Tennessee has been a dream destination forever. So maybe the Lord will make a way? I have authors to meet :-)
DeleteI truly enjoy your books, Carrie! The trip sounds like it was a lot of fun!
DeleteTRIXI - praying 2018 is the year God makes a way for your attend CFRR!! We'd love to have you!!
DeleteBonnie Roof
Is CFRR the same time as ACFW next year? If so, I should be there!
DeleteTRIXI ... I missed CFRR this year, and I truly regret it, so next year is A MUST, especially with the GREAT authors they line up -- some of them my top faves, so I will be fan-girling along with the readers. :)
DeleteHugs!!
Julie
Well, Carrie, first, that peach looks amazing on you. Love the scarf.
ReplyDeleteWhat a trip! WOW. The grand hotel sounds amazing and I certainly enjoyed your pictures on Facebook.
The nearest I came was booksigning trip with Ruthy and Mary to Tulsa, Oklahoma.
You're right. It takes time and energy to do this. Thank you for sharing your trip with us.
Your bookcover is beautiful too!
That was such a fun trip!!!!!
DeleteThanks Tina! Scarves are my friends. I remember being a kid and teen and reading about authors doing this kind of promo trip and I am blessed I got to do it!
DeleteOh my stars, when I read this my first response was... I'm still working, I could never take a month away to do anything other than recover from surgery and that's only if it's TERMINAL if I don't get the surgery!
ReplyDeleteThen I realized that might be a little over the top, which is how I roll.
Carrie, what an amazing privilege and adventure to be able to do this. I'm clapping from the sidelines!
Dave and I are trying to plan a cross-country driving tour, and it's tough to figure out when and how with our work schedules. Farming is finite, from May to October and much of the west that I want to see is north... and snowy from November to March. So we might be looking at April.... We'll see.
But what a grand thing, a month on the island!
Congratulations on a well-planned promo tour!
Ruthy that's a blessing to be in good health and do all you do! My plan was to work as a psychologist until I retired at about 70 and then write. But God had other plans. RA is no picnic but thank God my family supported me in this trip. We stayed on the Mainland in Mackinaw City and just a couple nights on the island but I got to "commute" on a ferry the other days on the island!
DeleteCarrie, you're absolutely right... health is a crucial thing, isn't it? And I'm crazy blessed... but I'd love to do something like this some day... we'll see... and in the meantime, I love that you were able to do it!
DeleteWelcome, Carrie! I'm so happy you were able to experience such an amazing trip. An entire month...wow! I can't imagine taking a week off.
ReplyDeleteI don't think my husband could either lol! But he did it and I think he was blessed by our adventure too. When I was working, before I became disabled, I couldn't have left my clients that long either.
DeleteJill, this gives us something to aspire to!
DeleteHi Carrie,
ReplyDeleteWhat a great lesson in turning lemons (your RA) into lemonade. You found a way to succeed despite your physical limitations. You are truly inspirational!
Thanks, Jackie, you're so sweet! Kind of like The Little Engine that Could -- one of my fave childhood books! Blessings to you!
DeleteCarrie, I just loved reading about your on location promo at Mackinaw! Your post brought back wonderful memories of the island and our stay at The Grand Hotel. On one trip we took one of those fast boat rides back to the Mackinaw City and I got seasick. LOL Or maybe the cause of my queasiness was indulging in too much fudge. Whatever the cause, as soon as my feet touched land I was fine.
ReplyDeleteYour signing opportunities were God at work. I'm impressed by how many people showed up and bought books. And that the store actually had that many cases of books to sell!
Your month long stay had to be refreshing and inspiring for future novels. What a blessing!
Janet
Thanks Janet! I bet you went on one of those special ferries that I'm not sure they have now, if so I didn't see them this time, that are really fast. I took Sheplers' line steady paced ferries over to the island. Yes, God helped me so much. Also, I apparently needed an editor to help me with this post -- what happened was they were already selling the book well and had a couple of cases when I first came to sign what they had on the shelf. When I came the other times there were cases I also signed ahead, so they'd have copies to sell at the store for the rest of the season. They ordered more and yes, that was pretty darned amazing, really shocked me, and that was just God! He's a great Father!!!
DeleteCarrie, you don't need an editor. I was just reading fast. :-) Still that's an amazing number of books sold. God is good.
DeleteJanet
I'm eager to visit Mackinaw Island after reading your post and seeing your beautiful pictures, Carrie. How wonderful that you could accomplish so much during your visits! I know the people--and bookseller--were thrilled to meet you.
ReplyDeleteAfter the delightful CFRR earlier this month, I traveled to Holmes County, Ohio, which is the heart of the Ohio Amish country. I was able to see and do so much, and most important, I got to know some of the charming Amish folks in the area. I didn't want to leave and hope to return in the not-too-distant future.
So glad you can be with us today in Seekerville. Wishing you continued success with your writing!
Hugs!
Debbie, I hope you'll get to go up and stay in the area and get to Mackinac Island. By stretching out the book promo, I was really able to accommodate my RA pretty well! I could rest between activities. And the weather was wonderful! 70s most of the time when it was 105+ at home! And what you said about your travels -- I found that to be so true and I'm from the area but above the bridge, in the U.P. -- but the people in Mackinaw City were SO nice to me, especially all the folks at the Mackinaw Bakery, at JoAnn's Fudge and at the Post Office. Ahem, I do have to plan more time on my exercise bike, though, after I meet this next Barbour deadline on Friday!
DeleteCarrie, it sounds like you'll be able to add so much richness to your stories from this visit!
DeleteHow delightful, Carrie, to do an extended promo/research combo stay at a location. And in such a beautiful and historical setting!
ReplyDeleteIt was a dream come true, Glynna! And since I have more stories to do, set up in the area, I'm praying we'll get to return and do that.
DeleteWhat a great opportunity you had. Listening to God always pays off, doesn't it? I'd love to visit Upper Michigan sometime. We were stationed at K.I. Sawyer AFB on Lake Superior for a few years when I was a little kid, so I don't remember the beauty of it, just the snow!
ReplyDeleteGlynis, I grew up in Newberry. Kincheloe/Kinross gets its fair share of snow. Go back and go to the Soo Locks, the Tahquamenon Falls, the Pictured Rocks, and to Mackinaw City to the Heritage Museum and the Dark Sky Park, and to Mackinac Island.
DeleteI've always wanted to visit Michigan. This trip looks wonderful! I would love to go somewhere like that and spend a month writing (more a writing trip than promo). That's my dream! Maybe a month at the beach to write pretty much around the clock. :)
ReplyDeleteCarrie, thanks so much for sharing your wonderful trip! I'm so glad your husband could work it out to go, and that everything turned out so well!
I should add that one of my high school friends now lives in Michigan, so I hope to visit her someday!
DeleteHi Missy! I hope you make it up to Northern Michigan and get to visit the sights there and in the U.P. Unfortunately, I got very little writing done. I live in a fairly quiet neighborhood on a half acre lot with a huge treed backyard and our little deck is my "office." I always have accommodations for my arthritis. Was I shocked to be unable to find a sling style lawn chair up there -- we looked but the only real place to shop was Walmart and they didn't have them. So since we've been home I've been working on deadline on two novellas. We go to the Outer Banks about every 2-3 years for a week and I can get a lot done there with writing as I'm usually inside with the AC on! BTW sand and laptops don't mix well ;) ;)
DeleteUmm, sand and laptops, yeah. I don't use a laptop on the beach, that's where I do my hard-copy editing with red pen and clipboard. I have enough issues with technology without tempting it, ha ha.
DeleteYou know, I've found I work best with the sounds of the ocean nearby. I've been on a few writing retreats with other writers and work on the balcony (no sand!). I've been more productive on those retreats than working anywhere else. Maybe I need work at home with one of those ocean sound apps on my computer. LOL
DeleteKaybee, I've done that, too, and it makes the story seem almost "different" somehow, doesn't it? Less sterile than reading it on the computer! Blessings!
DeleteMissy -- we usually stay about one block from the ocean but we can hear those wonderful waves and I agree -- it really does something to inspire writing! And being at the beach, looking out at the vast ocean, one can't help but be inspired by the God who made it all. Makes you feel like you're a speck of sand, but you're still part of His plan. We live a few miles from the York River, a very deep river that flows out to the Chesapeake and ocean and its lovely but just not quite the same. I love the Straits of Mackinac for all the gorgeous hues of water and the daily changes in what is happening out there.
DeleteCarrie, that sounds so beautiful! And yes, I agree about the sound of the waves and the vast beauty.
DeleteCarrie, this is a great post. I so respect what you are accomplishing with your health challenges.
ReplyDeleteBTW, the VERY FIRST gift I won on Seekerville was your Colonial Williamsburg plus chocolate package. I still have the little ornament hanging in my kitchen. Chocolate, alas, gone.
I would love to do an on-site promo. My first series was Oregon Trail and my second was New York/Hell's Kitchen/Upper East Side, so probably not with those, there are tons of books written in those locations, I'd have to stand in line.
I do have higher hopes for the series I'm working on now. It takes place in a made-up town in the mountains of New Hampshire, but references several real towns in the area and some landmarks. So I could probably do a White Mountains promo tour. All the books in the series take place during a three-day Christmas festival in said town, and it was based on a real festival held every year in a town five miles from my home. The purpose of the Festival is to exalt Christ and minimize commercialism, so I'm not sure if I should sell books there, but I would definitely give them a couple of copies for their gift basket raffle. And I'd have an automatic tie-in for speaking at their library or their church. It is really the sweetest thing, it's called "Lights On the Hill" and everything is free except the food. There's a huge barn on the property and local farmers bring in their animals and there's a Living Nativity. There's mainstange entertainment in the Sanctuary and acoustic music in the Coffee House. No Santa, the focus is all on Christ. I had to write about it, only for my books I've extended the Festival for three days.
We lived in the UP for a few months in the 80s. We lived in Ironwood, Mich. Love those Cornish pasties.
Kathy Bailey
Wow, that sounds like it would be fantastic! You should do it! What a wonderful way to celebrate Christmas, too! I have been to Ironwood, I had a cousin who lived near there a long time ago. Pasties are a part of growing up and don't let Yoopers hear you calling them Cornish pasties as we claim them for our own ;) ;)
DeleteTEXAS UPDATE!!!
ReplyDeletePlease give to SAMARITAN'S PURSE!!
http://sampur.se/2w59AZS
I've been involved with both Samaritan's Purse & the Red Cross. SAMARITAN"S PURSE is By Far the BEST recovery group!
People are taking in strangers. Summer camps are opening their cabins. Schools & even furniture stores are sheltering people.
It will hit here in northern East Texas today & keep raining all week. PLEASE KEEP PRAYING!!!
Jana, we'll be praying for you!! I've been praying like crazy for all those affected.
DeleteWill keep praying for Texas and Texans, Jana. I love Samaritian's Purse and their work! Having lived through Hurricane Hugo in 1989 with an infant (a sick one) at the time and no good water and no electricity and numerous trees down on my house, my practice closed because the building was declared uninhabitable for a while, I have a notion of a fraction (Level 3 hurricane with tornadoes) that you guys are going through but yours being so much worse and the flooding, that I can only imagine the horrors. Helping one another, and God's provision, is the only way to get through this. Hang in there!
DeleteI am a big fan of Samaritan's Purse, too... because they're not afraid to go to the frontlines and work, work, work.... and give.
DeleteThanks, Jana, for the tip on Samaritan's Purse because I was JUST wondering this morning where to send donations, so BLESS YOU!!
DeleteHugs,
Julie
That's off topic, but on my heart! :)
ReplyDeleteHope that's ok!
For sure! I remember being in Columbia, SC, having evacuated there from Charleston, and thinking while out shopping for stuff for our sick baby, that it seemed so darned WEIRD for people to be doing ordinary things. By then, we'd heard all the damage our neighborhood had taken and about our house being seriously damaged and trees down so bad in the street my husband had to wait a bit to go back to help get our house ready. Very surreal feeling that took months to disappear. This will be a long recovery for Texas and we'll all need to see what plans get put into place to help folks there.
DeleteHi Jana, We certainly are praying and I love Samaritan Purse. They are the best when it comes to helping disaster victims. And thanks to all the volunteers who jump in and help them. Thanks for mentioning them. Stay safe yourself Jana.
DeleteCarrie, that's so true. When our lives are tuned upside down and others are normal... we feel out of step.
DeleteAs if one or the other maybe doesn't belong there.
Hi, Carrie and Ruth. Being a reader, I have not been on any book signing tours! and I have not met an author on one either. CFRR is the closest I've come to book signing tours! Carrie, I'm so glad you were able to spend a month in my lovely state. I still haven't made it to Mackinaw this year. Am possibly going w/ a sis-in-law. She's never been and needs a break. I'm thinking it would be a good place for a break. Shared this Seekerville post on FB and Twitter. Have a blessed day!
ReplyDeleteHi Anne! Maybe next year you can make it up while I am there. I'll be doing book signings during the Lilac Festival, at the Island Book Store, Lord willing (that's the plan and we'll see how He blesses it!)
DeleteOh and thank you, Anne, you're an amazing Prayer Warrior and such a great supporter! I don't know when and if I'll be able to get to CFRR again, but what a wonderful event they had in Nashville. Praying you and your SIL get up to to the island soon! Blessings!
DeleteAnne, wasn't CFRR so much fun???? That's the best possible thing for authors like me... I have so much fun there, I love, love, love meeting readers!
DeleteGood morning Carrie. I am amazed at all of the time and that you've devoted to promoting Maude. I read her story and loved it! I am especiallt glad that you chose to visit libraries. I've actually been able to meet several authors through my years as Adult Services Librarian for my public library. I often had a limited budget so it was a blessing if an author would come and accept the proceeds from her book sales. I must say that most authors are very willing to accommodate libraries.
ReplyDeleteI wish you continued success and send you prayers for your health.
Blessings!
Connie
cps1950(at)gmail(dot)com
Hi Connie! This book may be my heritage book and I felt God nudging me to give this all I had and let Him do the rest. I've found most librarians to be really helpful. I try to be respectful of their time and how they are curating their collections, when I offer some of my books. Keep those prayers coming, Connie! Thanks and blessings!
DeleteHi Carrie, what a great look at promoting your book. So glad to hear how well it worked. Have enjoyed all the pics you have been posting. Loved the book! Blessings. rebunting(at)yahoo(dot)com
ReplyDeleteHi Robin! Great to see you here! It was an amazing blessing to be up there and I'm looking forward to returning next year and praying I'm put on the Lilac Festival roster! Thanks for spending time with Maude and Ben! Hugs and blessings!
DeleteHi Carrie. Just wanted you to know I loved Mackinac Island. Welcome to Seekerville and thanks for a great post.
ReplyDeleteHi Cindy! It's great to be back on Seekerville! I love Mackinac Island, too, its my happy place! Blessings!
DeleteI have not met an author on one but I'd love to. Thank you for the beautiful pictures, I feel like I've been there! Prayers always for your health and writing :) dkstevensne AT outlook*Dot*com
ReplyDeleteHi Deanna, I live in an area where there are quite a few authors, including Christian fiction authors who belong to a writers' group that my friend Janet Grunst and I co-chair. I have to say the first time I went to ACFW I was shocked and in awe to be able to see so many of my favorite Christian authors, a number of whom have gone on to give me endorsements for my own work -- how awesome is that? God puts you where He needs you and provides! Blessings!
DeleteHi Carrie and welcome to Seekerville. What an interesting adventure-just like the old days of book signings. Love how you incorporated all the local interests in your book set in that location. Great promo opportunity. And how fun to meet all those authors.
ReplyDeleteI usually have great opportunities promoting books in the locale where they are set. Stores and places that sell books, like hotels really like having something that features their locale. And readers that are visiting love the opportunity to learn more about the area they are seeing via a book they will enjoy reading. Very clever. And good for you for listening to the Lord. It always amazes me how individual He is with all of us.
Hi Sandra, I totally agree with you -- that's what I found up there. The businesses were so gracious and glad to have me. And it really was like I imagine they did back in the day, like when I was in my teen years and twenties. Nowadays you really have to get creative to do something like this. If I'd just looked at my own situation and not followed God's nudging, I'd have spent my summer in the recliner. Blessings!
DeleteLovely to have you as our guest, Carrie, and thanks for sharing your experiences with on-location promo. I know I could do a lot better about looking for opportunities, but my introversion is a real handicap in that area. Glad your month-long stay turned out to be so advantageous!
ReplyDeleteHi Myra! I'm a balance between introvert and extrovert. I'm much more interested in hearing what other people have to say, which was an asset as a psychologist. You really do need to engage people at these book signings and I loved loved loved hearing all the stories about Mackinac Island and romances from people who were visiting. SO many folks have wonderful tales to tell of their own weddings there, etc. That was one of the best things! Blessings!
DeleteHello RUTHY and CARRIE! Carrie, I enjoyed following your post while you were on-location! I'm so happy that it went well! Blessings and (((((HUGS))))
ReplyDeleteHi Caryl, I pray you are safe and sound! And I'm glad you enjoyed the posts. Thanks for coming by Pal! Hugs and blessings!
DeleteCaryl, I did too... Carrie painted such a picture of what she was doing, I might have been a little green-eyed!!!
DeleteCarrie, when I lived in Grand Rapids and worked for Zondervan, I always wanted to visit Mackinaw island but never found the time to go. However, I did know a lot of Yoopers. Until I moved to Michigan, I didn't even know the U.P. was part of the U.S. lol
ReplyDeleteYou've encouraged me to talk to my local library about a signing, or even having a launch party there for my historical romance that releases April 1. Thanks for the tip.
You're such an inspiration!
Barbara oh noooooooo!!!! How could you miss out on Mackinac Island and the U.P.??? You need to go up there and visit! Yes, use that Nike ad thing of "Just Do It" and see if you can get your local library to have you speak or sign. I don't do book sales at libraries. I have brought books for patrons to have signed and they have donated to Friends of the Library. I also bring my own books to donate and let them select what they'd like to keep for their collection, usually books that have stories set in that area. Thanks for coming by and how about contacting me about being on Overcoming With God blog, too? Thanks!
DeleteBarbara, I'm with you -- Carrie has encouraged me to check out libraries at Lake of the Ozarks for promo purposes, so THANK YOU for the tip, Carrie, and Barb for the underscoring of it!!
DeleteKeith and I actually did a 10-day bike trip from South Haven, Michigan, all the way up to Mackinac, and we LOVED it!! Especially Mackinac -- what a charming place! The only thing that could have made it better is if I could have attended a Carrie signing!!!
Hugs!!
Julie
I forgot about that Julie!!! I remember those pics now!!! That was amazing and would be something I could never ever do but PTL you were able! I'm so glad you loved Mackinac Island, its an amazing place. Hugs!
DeleteWelcome to Seekerville, Carrie.
ReplyDeleteI just learned this weekend that Lisa Wingate will be coming to my small town on Friday for a book signing at the library. Things like that just don't happen often in my small town. I am so excited to have this opportunity to meet her.
While I am at the library I will take in some of your bookmarks and talk to the librarian about your books.
Have a great day!
That is wonderful, Wilani! I heard her latest novel made NYT Bestseller list! And thanks for bringing in some of my bookmarks and asking about them ordering some of my books. I think the hardcover releases in October or November. Blessings Pal!
DeleteHi Carrie! How lovely to see you here at Seekerville!
ReplyDeleteI enjoyed reading about your trip to Michigan via Facebook, and I was envious the whole time. I grew up in southern Michigan, and love (times 3) the UP and Mackinac Island. :)
I haven't thought of doing an extended promotion trip. You've given me some ideas, though! Thank you for the great post.
And I have to say that your dedication to your writing and your readers is inspiring.
Hi Jan! Yes lol love love love is the right way to put it! But now the whole world is discovering how gorgeous it is up there and the U.P. and Mackinac Island are definitely INTERNATIONAL destinations which is so stinkin' weird, having grown up there!!! Jan, if I didn't have RA I wouldn't have done that long of a trip but it was the only way. Now that I've done it, I feel so blessed, and I hope I can continue with more books to promote up there. I do have another Mackinac Island story, a novella, releasing in April part of First Love Forever from Barbour and I hope that's one that might also be good for signings up near home, too! Blessings!
DeleteGood morning, Carrie!
ReplyDeleteThank you for being candid about your struggle with RA. It's very inspiring to me, as I also struggle with disability.
Your books look amazing. I've always wanted to visit the UP. Perhaps I can visit while reading your books.
Thank you for your persistence and obedience. You're an inspiration to me.
~ Yvonne
Hi Yvonne! I hope by my testimony of coping with RA that others will be inspired to let God help them overcome and do what He puts on their plates to do! Thanks! Yes, do plan a trip to the beautiful Upper Peninsula! But plan ahead and get hotel reservations because the towns are far spread out! Blessings!
DeleteI think those coping mechanisms are an amazing example to so many people, Carrie... You make things look doable.
DeleteI've never done an on-location promotion, but that doesn't mean I don't want to. Looks like it was very profitable, I'm glad you had a nice time.
ReplyDeleteI don't know if I'd describe it as profitable in the traditional aspect. Book signings at a book store -- the profits go back to the publisher against your advance. So the hope is always that you will "earn out" and more on what they gave you, but that's where the earnings from book signings first go, not into the author's pocket. But in an overall blessing, yes profitable in that way! Thanks for coming by!
DeleteWow! Carrie I was jealous that you got to go to one of my favorite spots! But I commend you that you got to go and listened to God's leading . Glad you had a wonderful time and that your hubby got to go along to share it! So sorry for your health problems but am glad it worked out so well for you! I have Maude's book and just loved it so... if I win I would choose another of your books. Thanks for a fantastic story about your trip.
ReplyDeleteHi Paula! I pray you'll get to go up to the area again soon! I'm glad God urged me to do this, because my hubs and I also got some revelations while we were up there, about our future plans, so that was really nice. And our son was a historical reenactor volunteer at the Michigan Heritage museum, which was great. Yes, if you want another book, if you win, that's no problem! Blessings!
DeleteGreat post! I don't remember meeting an author at an on location tour. But I think that would be lots of fun! :)
ReplyDeleteHi Sydney! Thanks for the Blog Hop during the time I was up north! It got a little wild and crazy with reduced time on the internet, but it was fun visiting all the blogs! Thanks for being a Pal! Blessings!
DeleteHi Carrie, I am so glad you were able to make that trip! I visited Michigan several yrs. ago with a ladies group..the Holland area. WOULD love to visit MIsland, but don't travel due to health issues...so I love reading books about it. Thanks for your giveaway and blessings on your health and writing.
ReplyDeleteHi Jackie! I'm so glad, too! I have never been to Holland, MI, but I'd love to go when the tulips are in bloom! At one point, when I couldn't walk for almost 5 1/2 years, I wasn't sure I'd ever be able to travel again. I could not take a step without pain and was pretty much housebound. Praying God brings healing to you! Blessings! Thanks!
DeleteCarrie, what an exciting time for you and your family! It's always so beautiful to hear how God surprises us on this journey. I love that He gave you the opportunity to do on-site promo signings. I imagine you met a lot of wonderful people. Thank you for sharing your fun story!
ReplyDeleteI did meet many super sweet and interesting people, Jeanne! I am so grateful that the Lord healed my foot enough to make a venture like this at all possible, too! Thanks for coming by!
DeleteHi Carrie:
ReplyDeleteI think you are also blessed by selecting a location that is a tourist Mecca in that part of the world! (Don't try this in Kingman, Kansas!)
My wife says all the tour busses go there and it's on her bucket list to visit! She even asked to be entered into your drawing and she has never done that before!
That's the power of location, location, location.
BTW: I'd like to know if you are a fan of Hemmingway's Nick Adams stories? Those stories sold me on Hemmingway and upper Michigan. I'd sure like to get up there, too.
I've always been a big fan of book signings just for the publicity you can get by announcing the event. By using all the local media and all the many locations/sections in a big town newspaper the news of your new book and its title can reach hundreds of thousands of people!
Good luck and I hope you enjoy many more trips!
Vince
Thanks Vince, for pointing out how important it is that your location be a tourist haven! And of course a similar trip up there during off season it would have taken even more of a miracle to have signed so many books and have been so well-received! As far as the buses -- they drove by our cottage rental almost every day! Sheplers is getting ready to expand their dock, too. My dad, who would have been 98 last December, took me out (as a child) to the places where Hemingway fished. That was pretty cool when I was old enough to realize how famous Hemingway was. I attended Whittier College for a little while, where some of his descendants attended. Unfortunately, the streams of Hemingway's day aren't the same now and if you want to catch those fab brook trout you'll probably have to go up to Canada. As far as social media was it ever a THRILL to have my brother tell me my pic was on the cover of the Sault Ste. Marie Evening News, announcing my library visit! That was the paper we got while I was growing up. Unfortunately, I never got to see a copy of the paper that had that :(
DeleteThank you for sharing your experience, blessings and challenges with us, Carrie!
ReplyDeleteTo my knowledge I haven't interacted with an author on an extended tour but I have met with some local authors and enjoyed the experience.
Please enter me in your drawing. I enjoyed the other book I read in that series and would surely enjoy yours too.
May God bless you and all of Seekerville!
Hi Phyllis! You are welcome! There are a bunch of wonderful authors and stories in the"My Heart Belongs " series from Barbour! Blessings!
ReplyDeleteCARRIE!!! It is soooooo fun to see you here, my sweet friend, and WOW, what a great experience you had in Mackinac!! It blesses me just to read about it because nobody deserves it more than you, girlfriend!!
ReplyDeleteIt sounds like a dream come true for any author, to spend so much time in the locale of your books, so I am thrilled God blessed you with that amazing opportunity.
You asked: "How about you? Have you ever felt the Lord leading you to do an extended on-location promotion of your work?"
As a matter of fact, I did feel strongly led to visit Isle of Hope, Georgia when I started writing my Isle of Hope series. But apparently the Lord did not feel the same way because the trip we had planned for a visit (albeit a short one, not extended like yours) was sidelined when we sold our house and had to be out in nine days. I have regretted it ever since and fully intend to visit it someday. I was blessed, however, when a reader friend of mine went there and took lots of pix for me of the same houses I used for the characters, so that was fun. But next time, I want to be taking the pix!! ;)
May God continue to bless you in your amazing career, Carrie! You are a true inspiration to all of us, accomplishing all you have done despite RA!!
Hugs and more hugs,
Julie
Hi there sweet Julie!!! It's great to be back again!!! Thanks so much for your kind words! Yes, this was a huge dream come true and God is so good! I'm so sorry you didn't get to make it to Georgia. Who knows what God spared you from, though, and He knows best. If God can use my journey to bless other people then I am doing what He's called me to do despite the many challenges. Hugs and more hugs back!
DeleteThanks for sharing your story and ideas, Carrie! So wonderful that you're family got to accompany you -
ReplyDeletesounds like such fun. I've never visited that part of the country but would love to someday. Thanks again!
My daughter is supposed to come with me for the Lilac Festival next year when I do more book signings. Very blessed to have my family with me! I hope you get up there sometime Laura! Blessings!
DeleteCarrie, our Lilac festival is a ten day affair in May here in Rochester... When is it in the U.P.?
DeleteRuthy the Mackinac island Lilac Festival is the first half of June and it smells like you are in heaven!
DeleteThanks for your interesting post, Carrie!! I'm so glad God gave you the strength for such a successful tour of one of my fave places - Mackinac Island. He has given you the strength and persistence to accomplish so much in your writing career - such a blessing to your readers.
ReplyDeleteI've been blessed to meet many authors - on tour, on research trips, and at also at individual signings. It's always a joy!!
Hi Bonnie! Thanks! Yes God has given me strength and helped me so much. That's great that you have met so many authors! Blessings!
DeleteThank you Carrie for writing your books and taking us with you on your journey. You persevere through your pain and promote your books like nothing is wrong. I think God blesses you because of your perseverance. I would love to visit all these places I read about but we get to experience some of the beauty through your eyes.
ReplyDeleteLove your books!
You are welcome Brenda! God helps me persist and persevere! Thanks for your kind words! Blessings!
DeleteThanks for the interesting post, Carrie. I really want to visit Mackinaw Island someday. I would love to be entered in the drawing for your book.
ReplyDeleteYou are welcome Sandy! I hope you make it to Mackinac Island! Blessings
DeleteBy the way, Carrie -- I love, Love, LOVE the new pic with your hair up -- ADORABLE!!
ReplyDeleteHugs!!
Julie
Thanks, Julie, its amazing what a couple of clips can do! That pic was taken at ACFW conference last year. Blessings!
DeleteHi, Carrie! So happy to hear of your success with your signing! :)
ReplyDeleteWhat an absolutely beautiful location! My sister and I recently watched "Somewhere in Time," and though I wasn't a huge fan of the plot, I did love the settings! I told my sister, "Mackinac Island? That's the setting of Carrie's books!" Looking forward to reading Maude's Mooring!
Hi Natalie! It was such fun! A huge blessing! I pray you get to go visit! I'm so excited to see your career talking off and I am looking forward to reading many many more of your stories!!! Blessings!
DeleteI'm glad you had the opportunity to spend an extended time in Michigan. I wish that our schedule worked out to seeing you during the month. That is cool that your great-grandparents' cabin is at the logging museum. We went there when I was a girl. CP
ReplyDeleteI am disappointed we didn't get to meet Becky but maybe next year! Yes, the cabin there on the property is where my grandmother, Maude Carrie Williams, was raised! Blessings!
DeleteSounds like a great opportunity for you. I have never seen any authors on such a book tour.
ReplyDeleteHi Michele! Great to see you here! Blessings!
DeleteSuch a cool place to see pictures from. IT's on my bucket list of places to visit! :)
ReplyDeleteHi Sabrina, Make sure you check this off your list! Blessings!
DeleteSabrina, mine, too... just because it's so unique!
DeleteWow, what an adventure, Carrie! :) How wonderful that you got to spend so much time in the area, and find new and "on the go" opps to have book signings and meetings. So cool!
ReplyDeleteIt really was, Pam! And now we're seriously talking about possibly having a second home up there in retirement, either in Northern Michigan or in the Upper Peninsula where I grew up. Blessings!
DeleteSounds like you had a wonderful time, Carrie! I'm sure that was great fun for your readers to meet you. I had the opportunity to speak with one of my all-time favorite western writers a couple of times years ago. He was such a gentleman, had a lovely sense of humor ... just what I had expected from reading his books. I treasure those memories.
ReplyDeleteNancy C
Nancy, I will be honest, I didn't get to see my regular readers who I have met through social media! There, like at other book signings I've done, its often whoever is coming into the location that day. So I met a lot of new potential readers, which was lovely. A bunch of my Pals group members are from Michigan but unfortunately none were able to get up to the area during that time. Blessings!
DeleteWhat a wonderful idea and opportunity, Carrie.
ReplyDeleteI haven't TRAVELED for promos...well, not based on location...setting. But I have done area promos like contacting the libraries and books stores and some museums with books for sale to tell them my books were set in their area. I've put them on my influencer list, things like that.
It was great, Mary. What I did on the way back home, too, was we stopped at Barnes and Nobles in Michigan that carried my books and met the staff, I signed the copies they had in the stores, and left bookmarks. I have tried to get my Michigan books into more libraries up there and have enjoyed meeting the librarians. Blessings!
DeleteThanks for having me on Seekerville, Ruthy! And thanks for coming to visit, Seekerville village members!
ReplyDeleteCarrie, what a great day! Thank you so much for being here and being such an attentive and darned good looking hostess! :)
DeleteYou rocked it!!!!
Thanks, Ruthy! You are so funny! I'm "dogged, determined, and dedicated to a job well done" and I'm "attentive and darned good looking" lol!!! Tired Old Mommy can't do much of anything without God's help, so I'll give him the credit for letting me hang out with you and the wonderful folks of Seekerville! Again, thank you for having me on, I really appreciate it, Ruthy!
DeleteMy sister and I want to do a local author book-signing at Half Price Books one of these days.
ReplyDeleteBest wishes to you and your sister, Boo!
DeleteHi Carrie! Sorry to be so late stopping in Seekerville today, but I loved your post. :) How wonderful you were able to stay a month and promote your book! I've never visited that part of our country but it's on my "wish list" to visit someday.
ReplyDeleteI was very blessed to meet you last August at ACFW and you were delightful! (Even though I knew you weren't feeling well, you still seemed friendly).
Thanks again for sharing, and no need to put me in the drawing as I do plan to purchase your book. :)
Hugs from Georgia, Patti Jo
Hi Patti Jo! It was wonderful meeting you last year too!!! You were such a gracious sweet person! Thanks so much♥️ Big hugs!
DeleteI'm not sure I've felt called to do extended promo, but I am feeling called to try and do my presentation on Christian history in Japan. My own church let me speak about it. I've started contacting other churches but no response.
ReplyDeleteWalt, keep trying. If I've learned nothing else in this business, it's that tenacity pays off... and "no" only means you haven't asked enough people. Stay with it, my friend!
DeleteHmmm, I think my comment disappeared, Walt! My experience has been when God calls not only do you need to listen but also to act! So that's good you are reaching out. Could be God wants you to expand your ministry circle -- keep looking elsewhere!
DeleteHi Walt: Have you made it clear that you won't be asking for contributions for the Japanese Churches in your request letter?
ReplyDeleteVince
As a reader I would love to attend any author event.
ReplyDeleteMary, that's so cool to hear! I know I have so much fun at author/reader events. For me they're an absolutely wonderful interaction with the people who butter my bread! My readers!!!
DeleteHi Mary! I pray you get that opportunity some time! I know Lifeway does sponsor yearly author tours in different locations. Great to see you here!
DeleteWow. What a trip! I've never met an author during a tour (sad to say).
ReplyDeleteYes it was a wow kind of promo trip! I don't think authors are able to do them much these days. I feel really blessed.
DeleteI really enjoyed reading this, Carrie. I've never felt the Lord's prompting to do an extended trip for promotion. The longest I've ever been gone for a promo is two days and that's because of travel time. I love your book cover.
ReplyDeleteThanks, Kimberly. If people knew what I have to go through to do any kind of trip at all they'd be shocked I ever leave my house! Blessings!
DeleteCarrie, thank you for sharing your obedience to God. I'm excited to hear about your book. I was just on the island a few weeks ago. I was standing in front of Cindy's Stable and looking at the oldest building there, wishing there was a historical book set on the island I could read. If I only knew! I'll find it and read it next time I'm staying in Mackinac City!
ReplyDeleteHi Stephanie! Oh that's so lovely! Glad you got to the island this season! Yes, please do spend time some reading time with Ben and Maude and let me know what you think of their story!
DeleteI think on-location promotion sounds like a great way to promote. I'm so glad you were able to make that trip. I've really enjoyed your pictures.
ReplyDeleteI don't think I have ever met an author this way. In fact, I have only met a couple of authors in-person. I wanted to get to the U.P during this tour but it didn't happen. I have Carrie's book on my tbr list though. :)
