From Contest Diva to Published Author

with guest Angie Dicken.

It seems like yesterday that I was invited to be a Contest Diva here in Seekerville. And after a year, I am thrilled to complete the circle from Contest Diva to Published Author!

What a wonderful, busy, and dream-filled year! After I won the LIH contract for the Matchmakers contest, I received a call from my fabulous agent, Tamela Hancock Murray, that Becky Germany from Barbour wanted one of my stories for the My Heart Belongs series! It’s been a wild ride of balancing two books throughout the publishing process, scheming future stories ahead, and also just loving the new venture as published author. As I’ve been contemplating what to share today, I can’t help but think of all I’ve learned. I’d love to share with you my top five takeaways during this dream journey so far.

Leanna's Choice
1. The Christian writing community is stellar. I have been a little puppy dog, trying to figure out how to get off this cushy, cloud nine and take the necessary steps to launching well into the great wide publishing world. If it weren’t for my  agent and all the authors out there—the women and men I’ve met at ACFW for the most part—I would be yapping my sorrows and finding a nice dark corner to shiver and shake. Wow. My writing friends who’ve gone ahead of me are ever-willing to help, give advice, and even give a shout out to my successes. The ladies at Love Inspired ROCK at supporting each other, and the gals that also write for the My Heart Belongs series have been so patient with me as I constantly ask questions and pick their brains about marketing. I am also blessed by my Alley Cat sisters, over at the The Writers Alley, who put up with all my questions, concerns, self-doubt bouts. I just can’t imagine doing this without the support of the Christian writing community. What a testament to the body of Christ, what a confirmation that a community-centered on Him is life-giving indeed!

2. There are readers out there, and they are AMAZING. After I took some of the advice from my author friends, I formed a Street Team. I CAN NOT BELIEVE HOW SUPPORTIVE THESE GALS ARE! Wowsers. I had no idea what a blessing it would be to connect to readers after becoming a published author. I was scared to death at first. All sorts of images rolled through my mind about the unsatisfied reader and how angry they’d be at any flaw that my stories might have (note: my husband continues to urge me to write horror because my imagination concocts frightful doom way too often). On the contrary, I’ve discovered that there are some avid readers who just spread JOY to other readers and their befriended authors. I mean, I’m a reader. And I didn’t realize that there was this vibrant community of readers connecting with authors until I stepped into my first pair of authorly shoes this year. The lovely ladies I’ve encountered so far have reminded me that counting my blessings is better than holding back in fear. I am so so excited to keep conversing with readers and hearing their own words of wisdom.

3.     All those rejections before, counted for something.

Just as I mentioned my life lesson in my post back in June as a Contest Diva, I’ll say it again: Contests aren’t just about winning. And I’ll add, Rejection isn’t just about losing.

I’ve been sending my stuff to agents and editors since 2010. Most of them have been very dedicated to communication. And until recent months, they all said the same thing: You are not ready.

At first, it stung—like, gnashing of teeth, crying into my half-eaten Cadbury Caramello with a box of Kleenex nearby. But now, looking back, the only way I made it to the Seekerville title of “Contest Diva” last year, and then to the big win as an LIH Matchmakers winner of a publishing contract, was because of those rejections that I had crumpled up and tossed aside, only to flatten them out after the misery subsided and try and learn from them.

Try harder.
Be different.
And LEARN.

Thankfully, ACFW teaches lots and lots of good stuff—and offers lots and lots of chances to transform the not-so-ready writing.

4. The process counts. I used to poo-poo the idea that it takes about a year for a book to go from contract to shelves. Why in the world should it take that long? But, after working with amazing editors like Emily Rodmell, and Becky Germany, I realize ALL that it takes to make a book shine! Every step of the way, I felt like parts of my stories’ rough edges were sloughed off, and I’d catch glimpses of refinement shining through. I just love the process now. I love editing. Did I just type that? And, if I hadn’t gone through all those rejections before, I doubt my heart would be able to handle the process. From changing titles, to cutting my used-to-be-signature fluffy writing, I’ve discovered the need for every step of my pre-published path to make way for the journey of publishing ahead.

5. Most of all, God’s timing is perfect. If I could sum up anything about my year of Contest Diva to Published author, it is this. From the tiny assurances: My LIH book went from a January release to a September release—the same month of the historic Land Run; and the release month of my November novel coming out 100 years after my grandfather’s birth at a place very near to the book’s setting. To the bigger assurances:  All that I’ve learned culminates in a peace that yes, I can do this, and yes, I am as ready as I’ll ever be if I let God guide me. It’s really His journey through me, after all. And I am so excited to be along for the ride.

Do you have any other things to add to this list from your own journey or your future step into publication? For all you readers out there, what has been your favorite encounter with an author? Authors, what has been your favorite encounter with a reader?

Renegade on the Run

When Cort Stanton and Aubrey Huxley try to claim the same land in the Oklahoma Land Run, Cort offers a deal—one that could help him keep his freedom. After taking the blame for his brother's crime, Cort needs to lie low, so he gives Aubrey the land for her horse ranch…if she'll hire him. Now he just has to avoid growing too close to the gorgeous seamstress, who can never know his secret.

Aubrey refuses to depend on any man, even one as handsome and kind as Cort. Yet, as they work together to make her dream a reality, it's impossible to imagine life on the prairie without him. And though Aubrey knows Cort has secrets that stand between them, she can't help but wish she could stake a claim on his heart.

  1. Wonderful to see you here Angie!! I'm very blessed to be a part of your street team, what a delightful adventure it has been so far :-) To find out I have more in common with you was really awesome too...so cool! I've found that all the street teams I'm involved in are the same enthusiastic readers who really want to help the author succeed. A great community to be a part of for sure. I've made many a reader friend through them and we tend to circle some of the same authors. I'm so happy to see your LIH launch in the world and to be a small part of that. I have My Heart Belongs in Castle Gate Utah: Lenna's Choice on my review schedule & can't wait to read it :-)

Some of my favorite encounters with authors are FB author chats/parties or just connecting via FB, newsletters, and blog posts. One day, I'd really love to meet some face-to-face! THAT would be a dream come true :-) I'm praying God will open a door for next years CFRR.

Angie, you have been a delight to "work" with and your enthusiasm shines through! And as you know, I've already read/enjoyed/reviewed The Outlaw's Second Chance so no need to add my name to the Stetson ;-) Blessings!

I just can't wait to hear what you think of my November release, Trixi! Thanks so much for reading!!

  4. Having just finished Angie's debut, The Outlaw's Second Chance, I would like to say "YES! HIT IT OUT OF THE PARK, WOMAN!"
I would also like to say that I am completely impartial, but I wouldn't be truthful if I said that. The Matchmaker contest was a wonderful experience, and one of the best parts was being able to watch stories like Angie's going from good to great.

  5. The book looks wonderful.

My favorite encounter with an author had to be a talk organised by my work place. I work with pre-schoolers and therefore I am no stranger to picture books. We organised an event with Mem Fox.

I had a lot to do behind the scenes. Mem Fox is an absolute darling. Her talk had us all laughing and in tears. When she read a couple of her picture books, yes she does her own audio books, we were all mesmerised.

  6. Congratulations on your "debuts" Angie!

My favorite encounter with an author was quite by chance. I was attending a company picnic with my husband and we went early to go on a tour of his plant. There in front of me was someone that looked quite familiar and when I saw her husband I knew it was Colleen Coble. I approached her and she was so delightful and sweet. Her daughter-in-law worked in Human Resources at the plant.

Your books look and sound great!

  9. WOW, Angie! A DOUBLE debut! Thank you for sharing your journey with us and "lessons learned."

You're right--"community" is so very important. Writing for publication is demanding and sometimes drains you to the dregs. I know I wouldn't be published today if it not for my Seeker sisters teaming up with God to get me there and keep me going. Add to that loyal readers, my family, supportive agent Natasha Kern, and Senior Love Inspired Editor Melissa Endlich who found me through a writing contest she judged. Clearly, I've been blessed with an amazing team!

  11. Do you know what I love, LOVE, about this post, Ang...was the positive. So many times when we as a people share a good (about any thing), we delve into the bad that was--for too long, then say the good in the last fleeting seconds. But every word of this post was marvelously uplifting. Even the part about obligations for two publishers at once (which must have been crazy wild). This is the post every writer should read. Well done...God is so pleased.
I have been one of your friends along this road...even before you captured your wonderful agent, Tamela. And in that time, I can say, you have stayed true to your calling to write really great stories for God's glory. CONGRATS!! Mary Vee, Sister Writer's Alley

    1. Hi Janet! I have found it is a bit different with each publisher. The manuscripts go through the same process, but just a little different as to when the author gets to lay eyes on it. I really enjoyed working with each publisher because they had one thing in common--wanting to make my stories shine!

    2. Angie, I agree! Editors have the same goal we do. Their expertise and fresh eyes are invaluable.

  15. Angie, I'm an occasional visitor to Writers Alley and love seeing you succeed. I agree with you about community. It's so important, for encouragement and to see that published writers have their struggles, too. Communities like this one break down the walls. Mary Connealy reached out to me through a contest and got me hooked into Seekerville, which I visit almost every day. I've also been blessed with good critique partners. Had one for TWENTY YEARS before we decided to take a break. Had another one about a year and she's fantastic.
Blogs like Seekerville and Writers Alley are especially important because they keep pointing us back to Why We Do This, i.e. to spread the word of God. I've been a professional nonfiction writer most of my adult life, and that calls for a certain pushiness and drive. It is what it is. But Christian writing is different and I can't approach it in the same way. The same discipline, the same mastery of craft, but everything else really is in His timing.
Congratulations Angie, I've read your posts and you deserve this.
Heading out to brunch with critique partner! This will be a good day!

  30. A few writerly questions for Angie. Generally a plotter or a pantser? Desk writer or mobile writer? How do you get your writing time in with a day job and four kids? What are you working on now?

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. You know...I used to brag about being a pantster...but I just don't think that's possible for me now...I have to have some bones in place and know the points I need to hit to make everything work together and move forward! I am totally a mobile writer...which stinks for taxes this year. No home office for me! Starbucks and my local coffee shop...school parking lot while I wait for my kids (um...where I am now)! Now that all the kids are in school, I reserve mornings for work at church, and then afternoons for writing. I haven't gotten into the swing of it yet...with the book launch and ACFW coming up, but I was pretty good at keeping that writing time sacred. What I am working on now?? Um... I feel like I have two authors trapped inside my head...a contemporary and a historical...just can't stop the voices of past and present! HAHA!

  31. Congratulations, Angie! Well deserved success!

I loved your encouraging post and I found myself nodding over your many great points. I agree, contests help us hone our skills and improve our craft. I've enjoyed the process. And sometimes, we just have to dig in our heels and keep on trudging. Indeed not easy, but God's timing is perfect.

  32. Wonderful post , Angie, and congrats on TWO books! Please put my name in the Stetson, I love historical westerns!

My most memorable encounters with authors happened in the 80's when I worked for an independent bookseller in Florida, and we went to the Bookseller's Convention in San Francisco at the Moscone Center. I met and garnered autographs from Sandra Brown, Jane Auel, and the late, great Joan Hohl. Sandra even sent me a book cover from my favorite book of hers (Two Alone) and a great letter. There were other authors there, too, and I got glimpses of Shirley McClaine, Roz Russell, and Charles Kurault (keynote speaker). I'm an old fangirl from way back!

Seekerville is the best when it comes to support and help. Although I don't write Christian fiction (yet), I feel He led me to this site, and will continue to guide me onto the path I should take. It's all a learning experience for me, and one I'm enjoying.

  37. ANGIE, WELCOME TO SEEKERVILLE, GIRLFRIEND, and WOW ... SUPER CONGRATS on not one book, but TWO!! Do you know how rare double debuts are???

LOVE your top-five takeaways, my friend -- you sure learned A LOT, so thanks for sharing that with us.

I particularly like your quotes, "Contests aren’t just about winning. And I’ll add, Rejection isn’t just about losing."

That's actually a lesson I relearned recently -- that God is FAR more concerned with our spiritual success than our physical success, be it in healing or in one's career, so I totally agree that failing at something we want to do is not just about "losing," it's about winning the things God wants you to win and learning the things He wants you to learn. They say you can't teach an old dog new tricks, but this old canine is FINALLY getting it. ;)

Excellent post, Angie, and may God continue to bless you in your career!

  38. Angie, you mentioned being a pantster. I used to get an idea and sit down and just write. Now that I'm trying my hand at suspense instead of historical, it's not working so well. I write myself into a corner and can't get out. On my next story, I'm going to try to plot more.
