Cool Christmas Gifts for Readers and Writers

Missy Tippens

Every year or so we've shared some gifts for writers around Christmas time. I thought it would be fun to do that again this year. Tippens kids, if you’re reading this, well, I hope you get some good ideas! :)

I thought I’d start with the more practical and head toward the…not so practical (to put it mildly!). I'm including links but not all photos. So please don't get distracted by shopping and forget to come back. :) (By the way, I don't get any kickback if you purchase these items. I'm just sharing for fun.)

A year or two ago, my sister-in-law got me of these literary inspired candles. Very nice gift!

And of course, we all love fun mugs. There are so many good ones!

Here's a Zazzle site that has a lot of mugs.

And this one cracked me up:

photo from LaTazas & MAUAG Funny Mug Gifts. (Link above)

Another cute one! Talks about a writer being a person who can convert caffeine into books. :)

I really loved these tea towels made of fabric that looks like writing paper! She’s sold out for now but I’m hoping she’ll have more soon. Oh! I just found another store that has one. So you can try here as well.

Definitely in the land of the practical: a gift card to play at your favorite office supply store! Yes, I know you writers understand what I mean by playing. Is going to buy pens and printer paper a chore??? NO. A visit to the office supply store is FUN! ;)

And for readers and writers, a gift card to your favorite bookstore is always appreciated!

Of course, among the practical category, are gift subscriptions and memberships. How about subscriptions to:
--Audible.com so you can listen to stories.
--Magazines for writers like Writer’s Digest or Publisher’s Weekly.
--Netflix or Hulu type subscriptions so you can study movies! That’s one of my favorite ways to internalize story structure.
--Or for a different type of inspiration, how about membership to a botanical garden nearby. We joined the Atlanta Botanical Garden this year and have really enjoyed it. You could also buy an annual pass to local State Parks or National Parks.

Along those same lines, consider asking for season tickets to your favorite music or theater venue. For several years, I’ve bought a 4-concert season ticket package to the Atlanta Symphony Orchestra. And just this year we bought season tickets to one of our local theaters, AuroraTheater. I find inspiration in any of the arts and imagine you would too! Plus, we’re supporting fellow creative folks.

Some of you may work on the couch or in a room that's not strictly an office. Pam Hillman was talking about this recently for moving her research books and supplies. Rolling carts can be one way to move your office around and then to store everything away when company comes!

Does your laptop heat up when you work on your lap? Try a laptop cooling pad. Here's a list of popular ones.

Now, moving into the more unusual gift category. A lot of these are created and sold by individuals or through Etsy and places like that. I like supporting small businesses that way.

Here’s one I found that I love. Sticky notes for your to-do list. I can imagine it stuck onto a keyboard or on a monitor.

Lithographs. I love this scarf made from Little Women!

photo from Lithographs.com. (Link above)

This could be great fun for readers as well as writers: A 100 Essential Books scratch off chart!

Typewriter Coasters: An old-fashioned typewriter holds a set of coasters. I always have a drink near me as I work, so I love coasters. One of my friends bought me a wonderful set of quilted coasters last Christmas. She said she thought of me as soon as she saw them. (Thank you, Beth!) You might be able to find something similar.

Okay, I found more mugs I like! First Lines coffee mug that has great first lines from multiple novels.

And this one made me laugh out loud: Quitter coffee mug (Bookmark? You mean quitter strip?!) LOL

Photo: MGAPDX store on Etsy (link above)

And one last mug that says: Pray, Write, Repeat.

Here's a keychain that’ll remind you to write.

A light up pen to catch ideas that hit you during the night.

Here's another one that made me smile. A Proof Read clock.

Photo from 3dRose on Amazon (link above)

Need a fun way to brainstorm and keep track of details and like to work on paper? You could use this gift set with it's included booklets for characters and locations and scene ideas.

There are a gazillion journals out there, and I'm sure many of you collect them and use them. I thought this one was nice because it is a Writing Prompt journal.

Now to some fun items. I love jewelry, and there are some really great pieces of jewelry for writers and readers. You just have to do a search and will come up with many. Here are a few I loved:

And this beautiful Mystery Writers Charm Bracelet

Photo: PattieTierney Store on Etsy (link above)

Old-fashioned typewriter key jewelry is also a favorite--like this necklace.

Here's a place to order Bookplates.

And finally, one of the crazier gifts. Here's some hard core decorating for book lovers. A duvet cover that looks like a set of books! They also have a shower curtain to match. :) Who needs to go to the library when you have giant books all around your home?! :)

I hope you've had a little fun with this post and maybe even found some shopping ideas. You can also send your friends and family members here for ideas.

GIVEAWAY! As long as the site doesn't sell out, I'll be giving away one of the notebook paper tea towels. (If it sells out, I'll find something similar or do an Etsy gift card.) Please let me know in the comments if you'd like to be entered.

I'd also love to hear what your dream gifts are for Christmas!

  1. I can always use tea towels (or something similar. ;P) What I really want for Christmas is babysitting services, you can do that over the internet for me, yes??

  2. Hi Missy:

I must say I never thought cannibalism could be so funny! Wait long enough and you'll see everything.

Can you find out who makes those scratch-off sheets? Some years ago I suggested that authors with a lot of books create such a sheet or card so their readers would have a list of books the author wrote and an indication of which they read. This would also help to tell in which order books fall in a series.

There are also quite a few compulsive type people who once they start a collection, like stamps or coins, can't rest until they collect/read them all! (I read "The Lifetime Reading Plan" as a teenager and have spent the rest of my life trying to read them all. Still many to go.)

So for a great writer gift, give an author a scratch-off sheet of her books with instructions on how to order them in quantity.

I like all these novel ideas. Please enter me in the drawing.

    1. Vince, that would be a great way to hook a reader to buy all an author's books! I think you're right about people getting compulsive to finish something! LOL (Way to abuse an addiction!) ;)

    2. Fun idea, Vince. I'm considering gifting our grandson with "The Lifetime Reading Plan." Any downside?

    3. Hi Janet: No, not unless he is too young. You don't want a young person to get the idea that great books are very hard to read. I would also suggest giving him "How to Read a Book" which I read at the same time. If you are going to invest the time and effort of reading the great books, then it would be well to learn to get the very most out of your reading time. I was very lucky to read these books as a teenager. Good luck with your gifts.

  3. Hi Missy! Thank you for all the fun ideas! I love them all and would love to have my name tossed into the drawing.

My dream gift this year is a Notebook. Something small enough that I can sit anywhere and have it in my lap as I type away. (It's sitting under the tree as my dear sweet husband wanted me to pick it out).

    Blessings,

I asked my hubby for a new reading/writing bed pillow. I won't know if he it is under the tree until the 25th. Here is the link since it would work for writers & readers both! http://www.brookstone.com/pd/nap-bed-rest/973065p.html

    2. That's cool, Rose. I don't read or write in bed, but several years ago, my MIL got me a very firm contoured pillow. It was too thick to sleep on, but I use it on the couch for back support when I'm writing. It's very comfortable. :)

Does anyone else think of Lassie when they hear Timmy's name?

Super fun post, Missy, with great ideas!

One year we gave a young family with 2 boys a season pass to the Houston Museum of Science. They all really enjoyed it and that enabled the boys to participate in some age appropriate activities too.

I'd not thought about a National Park pass. SUPER idea!

Have a very Merry CHRISTmas, y'all!

    1. Sandra, I love books, too. I've already bought several as gifts this year!

    2. Hi Sandra: I also love books. You can even give Kindle books if you know the person uses a Kindle. No wrapping, no postage, no post office visit. No waiting. No lost in the mail. No taken from the doorstep.

BTW: I'm into "Love's Healing" and I love the start. You jump right into the surfing! I expected that goodie go come as a reward a few chapters from the start. Funny it looks like your editor said to cut the first two chapters an start on chapter 3. Well, that's what is on the cover. When you stories start with the cover art scene? So fun. I have never been to Hawaii but I did live in that part of Southern California. Time to read some more.

  17. Missy, what a fun post! There are so many fun writerly ideas here! I wish I'd read this before Black Friday, as I did pretty much all my shopping that weekend. Hubs and I make it a date day to shop and people-watch on Black Friday. Yes, yes. We might be a little bit crazy. But we make it non-stress and relaxing. ;)

That said, my hubs bought me one of my ideal gifts for Christmas. I love photography, and he got me a really nice camera. I know because it was on sale Black Friday weekend. ;) My other dream gift would be a week or two to just write on my story with no interruptions....preferrably at home without anyone else here. I know, it's not a tall order.

As I looked through your list, it reminded me of an Etsy site I purchased gifts from over the summer. She makes keychains and jewelry from dictionary words. And she can also personalize. I'm leaving the link below, in case anyone's interested.

  20. This is sooooo much fun! Writers and readers are so easy to buy for and clearly some clever people know that. Love the idea of upcycling typewriter keys! And that grammar mug would certainly be a conversation starter at work. Bwahahaha!

  23. Missy, thanks for the fun post and creative gift ideas for readers and writers! My DH and I always appreciate books. The mugs and towels and post-it notes are so cute! The Little Women neck scarf is a conversation starter for sure. Maybe even a good way to get acquainted with that cute guy down the street. ;-)

The wastebasket in my office is "stacked Papier-mâché books" with the titles of Moby Dick, Jane Eyre, War and Peace and Tom Sawyer. I love it! 24. Oh, Missy, I LOVE THIS!! Of course, the very first thing I did was to see if I could get a scarf with Gone With the Wind on it, but the website said, "to create Litographs from works outside of the public domain we have to apply to license the text from the copyright holders. Often, this takes a long time and sometimes isn’t possible at all."

    Sigh.

I have to admit, I am NOT a charm bracelet gal AT ALL, but that writer's charm bracelet HAS intrigued me ...

my perfect gift this year would be help to pack up/purge household stuff to make our move to Colorado easier. No gifts this year, gotta get rid of "junk" this year. Must cull my hoard of books because I know I cannot take them all...*sigh*

    2. Hi Debby:
Readers might like the same thing. You know, to show their favorite books that they'd like to talk about. Imagine a nice looking woman who has a bracelet with great works of philosophy! The guys it didn't scare off would probably be much to her liking. It would be hard to fake a knowledge of all those great works. Of course, they could be books in other disciplines. I think it would sell.

Yes, I gave my kids a list of gifts that I'd like (hey, they ASKED!), and a rolling cart and laptop cooling pad were on the list. Even though I have an office (okay, it's the breakfast room...) I prefer working in the den with on the love seat recliner. But then when Christmas comes or the grand is there, I have all this stuff everywhere. Research books, Thesaurus, English Through the Ages, Notes, Maps, and then the ring binder for the book I'm promoting.

Last year I moved it all and it took me months to find my Thesaurus! So, even if I don't get a rolling cart for Christmas, I'll be buying my own with Christmas money. I'm pretty excited about getting one. :)
